Tasty and generous meals in a comfortable, traditional setting. Friendly staff and seemed to be well used by the local community.

Fantastic position on the loch. Loads of character as this is a very old hotel with a lot of history. Room was very comfortable ands good size too All good until we mention the evening meal, which at best was very bland. My chicken wrapped in bacon and stuffed with haggis wasn’t great and the vegetables were totally tasteless. Maybe they were frozen? For the quality, I would say it is overpriced. I thought £5.60 for a pint of Peroni for £5.50 was also excessive. On the other hand the breakfast which is a Continental breakfast is well worth it. This was much better than the evening meal. An overall good experience, somewhat spoilt by the evening meal.

This is a lovely bar with big real fire in the middle but is struggling due to lack of staff at the moment in same way as many others are in the area. Cullen Skink was very nice. venison burgers for main were pretty generic and boring. Didn't bother having dessert as was put off by the main. No real ale on draft available assume due to lack of turnover I hope this place can get the staff to keep going

Ate here both nights while staying in the Clachan Cottage Hotel. The food was lovely and very generous portions, and wonderful views over the Loch. Nicely decorated , as was the hotel, which the Bistro and the adjoining bar are part of. The staff were very pleasant , and we had a lovely stay. The weather was not wonderful but the surrounding scenery was amazing, particularly on the road to Crianlarich.

We had been visiting the Local area and were surprised how few eating places there were so we were very grateful to find the Clachan Cottage. Unfortunately the kitchen wasn't open but we had a cup of tea some crisps and a lovely piece chocolate and orange cake. We received a warm welcome and felt very comfortable but we did notice several people asking for food who were surprised that the kitchen wasn't open and one customer quite upset as the minimum spend on a debit/credit card was £10 - very unusual in Covid times. The weather was beautiful on the day that we visited and there were lots of customers. We felt that the pub was missing out on a lot of potential business by not keeping the kitchen open.

After driving 9 hours 10 mins before our destination there was a car crash right infront of us, the road was closed off for another 6+ hours after this, as it was a bad crash, we were told people had died. We were hungry and tired and looked to this place for a little comfort to wait out the road opening; I was greeted by a barman with disregard of the concept of empathy. I asked if they were searving food and recieved a plain "No" so we just went in to buy a few refreshments and to get in from the cold. The only food I had with me was a cold can of beans and I'd barely eaten on the way down. After the barman gave a few disgusted looks he came over to insult me and then asked me to leave, saying the only other group of people in the bar found it offensive. I was shaking at this point and asked the other group if they minded if I were to eat this tin here, they all laughed and clearly weren't aware let alone bothered. I went back to the barman and explained this and he just told me and my partner and her brother to leave, we then waited another 4 or so hours in the car with no food as nowhere near was open. This individual is a cold, unempathetic, bitter man and I really hope something happens in his life to change this. I've never felt so unwelcome anywhere. I've never written a review before but people need to know this is not a nice place to hang your coat as long as the same barman works there.

I had been walking for 7+ hours in the amazing countryside and, while feeling thrilled, was absolutely knackered. I was also probably looking as tired as I felt and had just missed the last bus back to Strathrye by 10 minutes so was looking for somewhere warm and friendly to have some food and work out the best way to get back to my hotel. I made a terrible decision to try the Rowan Bistro at Clachan Cottage Hotel.I came in and there was no-one at the bar and only one couple in the restaurant so a bit quiet but that was fine. I waited for a few minutes and someone ambled along. I asked if there were any local taxis and, after thinking for a few moments, said "no" and "I have no idea of any in the local area I'm afraid". So far a bit frustrating but understandable. I said "OK, i'll have a drink and will probably get some food" to which the person nodded so I sat down. After spending 5 mins (and only 5 minutes) finding a taxi from a company a few miles, I then went up to order said food. "The kitchen has already shut" was the reply. Rage! Not even an apology! He had even watched me look at the menu!I finished my drink and walked to the place next door, the Lochearnhead hotel, where I hoped to revitalise my faith in humanity. They were amazing. Even though they had just shut their kitchen (for which they were massively apologetic), they offered to make me up some soup. I mentioned about taxi debacles and they said "Oh no, there was one literally next door to the Rowan Bistro". How hopeless is that?! They even offered to drive me back to my hotel but I had already ordered the taxi and didn't want to put them out. They also refused the tip I wanted to leave them. Properly amazing people. Please don't make the same mistake that I did and go to the Rowan Bistro in Clachan Cottage Hotel!

She wouldn’t even make the ice cream sundae on the menu? Why would you not have a sign outside to let people know this? Should be advertised as drinks only!!

From the charmless host to the tasteless food this pub/restaurant lacks any endearing qualities. On a bitterly cold day, on our long jouney north, we arrived to find the woodburner barely smouldering and the sullen, disinterested host complaining about the lack of customers! Desperate for a warming lunch we both ordered culleñ skink. We have enjoyed this soup on many, many occasions whilst holidaying in Scotland over the years so thought we knew what to expect. However the 'soup'we were served bore no resemblance whatsoever to traditional culleñ skink - it was merely a bowl of warm milk (I kid you not!), with just 3 or 4 tiny pieces of tough fish and a few tiny cubes of hard potato. It was totally devoid of any flavour. At over £7.00 per portion it was an absolute disgrace! In retrospect we should have complained and left but we really needed a break on our long car journey. Oh and ladies please only visit the toilets if you really have to - the bin was overflowing with used paper (quite something considering it was nearly 3 feet tall), and judging by today's footfall clearly hadn't been emptied for many days. Suffice to say the smell was not pleasant! We will not be returning.

The room was spacious with 2 good chairs to relax in. The room and shower room were clean and in good order. Only a shower, no bath. We had booked a garden view but found we had been given a loch view which was great. Didn't have food here just the breakfast, which was ok. It was served by a very nice smiley lady. You can sit outside and have a drink or food but the main road runs past and it is off putting. The loch is across the main road as is the car park. Not much to Lochearnhead it's self but Comrie is a 20 min drive away and has more to offer.

We really wanted to get into the Lochearnhead Hotel, but it was fully booked, and this place is a short walk along the road from there. There was a pretty decent menu and you order at the bar. Despite some other reviews, I went for the macaroni, and I found nothing wrong with it. My friends had veggie burgers and also didn't complain. We should have stopped there, but were attracted to the idea of apple pie and custard. Honestly it wasn't very special. My portion hadn't been heated through entirely as I found one bite in the middle which was cold, and there wasn't enough custard. I'm glad we got in as there isn't a lot of choice in the village, but I can't be over enthusiastic about it.

Breakfast room and guest lounge particularly well done up with great views over loch to mountains. We had the lochview room which was spacious and comfortable, again with great views. First impressions the surroundings seemed fine until we touched a very sticky table, asked if waitress could wipe it, remained sticky. Our lunch was a simple choice, Nachos, soup and fish and chips Nachos a small portion. Two soup would have been better served in a cup, watery and very little veg or taste. Fish and chips went down well. Prices reflect a better dining experience. Waitress behind bar really nice. Another waitress took our dishes, no eye contact and didn't ask if we enjoyed our lunch. Overall little thought went into presentation A lot of comments mention the fact the cafe/hotel depend on passing trade, surely we want visitors to remember Scotland's food for the right reasons. Lastly and perhaps the icing on the cake, ladies toilets were disgusting, strong stench of urine, wobbly loo seat, floor filthy, especially behind door of toilet. Dried flowers- yuk!

Staying nearby we spotted the Clachan as we drove passed and decided to give it a try as it looked busy. As it was a warm evening we managed to grab a table outside with views over the loch. Probably not for everyone as you are roadside and there is an element of traffic but all in all this was outweighed by the views. The menu offers a typical range of pub food with fish n chips, burgers, pasta and salad dishes etc. All were freshly cooked, healthy portion sizes and tasty. Prices are on par with those available elsewhere, certainly not cheap but not over the top either. The service was friendly and efficient and all in all we were pleased with our meal.

Hi I booked a two night break at the Clachan Cottage hotel on the 5th & 6th of May, we arrived late and headed straight to our room, as soon as we got into our bed I could feel the springs through mattress, I really didn't want to complain as I was tired.....however this got the better of me as we paid £160 for two nights! Not the most expensive, but not cheap either.I did go down to reception and was given another room key, this room was marginally better, although the mattress was as old as the hills outside!! The next morning Neil you asked how we slept, we did sleep and I told you fine, to this you replied "it's good to know about the uncomfortable mattress" I searched trip advisor on my return, just put the word mattress and it pulled up a whole list of previous complaints re mattresses, me thinks you already knew? and its fair to your customers to suggest you didn't !! Further to this the floor boards outside the rooms creaked so badly, an easy job to have fixed and stop people being disturbed.Mould on ceiling of shower, not acceptable in this day and age !Room was clean thou, breakfast was good :) On leaving we asked if we could have a coffee and sit outside to enjoy the view one last time( Have to say the view was out of this world!) We were told we could take a coffee from the breakfast room and take outside, my daughter didn't like the filter coffee...think your missing a trick here...buy a Nespresso machine, the pods cost about 30p you could make a huge profit ! As it was we drove further down the road and gave our business to Mhor something ... Lovely coffee My husband was astonished when I explained you couldn't provide us a nice coffee when requested :( Think you need to be open minded to change !! Sorry, sadly we wouldn't return I'm sure you will reply Neil, just being honest !Oh, very helpful member of staff, cyclist didn't catch his name...gave us info about walk we did on the Saturday :) Kay Robertson

My wife and I are bikers and are around here fairly often. We've stopped off for drinks a few times at the Clachan and commented we should have a meal sometime. We did today but wish we hadn't bothered - a huge disappointment, very poor food and service. With the advent of social media and trip advisor, food standards generally are pretty high nowadays.... the Clachan haven't tuned into this yet. The food and service felt like the bad old days of restaurants that relied on passing trade and didn't have to try too hard as they'd never see you again anyway. The cheese burger was served without cheese despite the order having been taken correctly. The same burger was re-served 5 minutes later with cheese, including the same chips, obviously now cold. The burger was like a piece of cheap sausage meat from a low quality supermarket. Needless to say my wife didn't eat it.Beer battered fish - obviously fried at way too low temperature, so soggy, mushy and tasteless batter. I ate it as I was hungry, but it was poor.Despite the full burger meal (minus one bite) going back, the server never even asked if everything was ok with the meal. We gave her our feedback on the burger and got the response - "I'll tell the kitchen." We didn't bother saying anything about the fish as she didn't seem at all interested in our experience. We're very realistic and understand you get what you pay for, so if food's cheap, our expectations are set accordingly. However the Clachan is not cheap by any means - they're charging decent money, certainly enough to be serving a decent burger and fish supper. It feels to us like they're taking unfair advantage of a captive and mostly passing audience in the beautiful surroundings they have with very little competition. It's a real shame - it's a great spot with stunning views and should be amazing, but it's not! Afraid we won't be stopping by for dinner again any time soon.

Feeling thirsty, my wife and I stopped off here whilst out touring a couple of days ago (15th April) for drinks. My wife ordered a flat white coffee whilst I had a hot chocolate.A nice cosy little pub/restaurant, nicely decorated, and there were a few people in during our visit. We encountered no problems with the service, drinks, or anything like that. However, we were surprised to count no less than 5 dogs with their owners in the premises whilst we were there. This seems to be a growing development in general up and down the country where dogs are accepted into establishments like this. Now before anyone gets the wrong end of the stick and jumps to conclusions, we have nothing against dog owners, dogs or animals BUT my wife has a severe allergy to pet fur. So on this occasion for us, it was a case of a quick drink up and a rather hurried exit.

I'm always surprised that this place is still in business, but presumably the lack of many other alternatives locally and the lochside location are the explanation. Some of the staff could scarcely be less welcoming if they tried, and the prices are high but are unfortunately rarely matched by the quality. Drove by on a roadtrip and stepped in for dinner, two rooms in which you can get the same food, one pub and one restaurant. We chose the pub, good atmosphere and OK food. First time trying haggis and it was delicious! Friendly staff too!

Nice atmosphere in this local pub. Shame bar staff didn't add to it, miserable or what. Tables needed a good clean as very sticky. Food was nice and hot, but overpriced for what it is. Ok for when you don't want to get in a car after the drive up here. Does allow dogs though

We ate in the restaurant with views of the beautiful loch. A much enjoyed location and first time visit to this area for our London friends. They were in awe not only of the views but of the selection of fine Scottish fayre on the menu. We all had cullen skink followed by sea bass, salmon and mussels. Absolutely delicious! Reasonably priced too. Keep up the good work and thanks for a very pleasant stay.

We stayed overnight in this ideally located hotel. On a limited budget, we were delighted with the quality, cleanliness and friendliness of the staff. Dinner and breakfast were both excellent. Great value for money, with free magnificent ever changing views of God's Country!

We sat in the bar to eat dinner, staff were very helpful and the service was good with generous helpings on the main courses, dessert could have been a little better, however, overall a good meal.

We visited the Clachan Cottage and ate in the bar with friends in the evening. The menu was varied with a good choice of starters, mains and desserts. It was good value with generous portions. The service was courteous and prompt. The bar was relatively quite and there is free wifi. The views over Loch Earn were stunning.

Spending time with an old chum who emigrated to USA 45 years ago and spending time exploring the southern highlands. Accidentally arrived her at the right time for lunch; happy coincidence; good timing.Positive, welcome pub with pleasant host. Good menu, excellent presentation of pub, surrounds, parking etc. Viewing water skiing on the loch added interest to the occasion.Cullen skink and veg broth starters were quickly presented and tasty although the skink could have been made a bit thicker - choice of potato (?) Venison burger and scallops with black pudding and pea mash went down well and conversation was lubricated with half pint beer (driving laws) and lemonade (recovering alcoholic) - remarkable the extent to which the bill is reduced in such circumstances!Outstanding drive back to Glasgow via St Fillan's, Comrie, Crieff.

We were very dubious about having dinner here as we had checked in to the hotel and already seen the room (*eep*)However, being off season, there aren't really any other options around. The hotel boasts a full blown restaurant, and also does dining in the bar. What with the time of year, only the bar was an option. And it turned out really well: the food was good, perfectly cooked (read, not overcooked - fish), well presented, and quite quickly served. One of the dishes (a daily special with scallops) was even pretty original. The only downsides to the experience were the service (not unfriendly, but definitely not friendly or concerned) and the decor.Between the dated outdoorsy US/Canada log cabin feel, the 2 TVs in the room and the loud radio music, it was a bit overwhelming. A shame since it is a nice place to site and watch the loch. All in all, the food was (very) good, and in that kind of a remote place with few options around, it is definitely recommended.

After reading in the guest book at our self catering lodge that it was good, we decided to pop down. The reviews were quite mixed on here, which did make us wonder, but decided to give it a try as choice is limited for food within walking distance. The bar was cosy with the log burner and there was a plesant atmosphere. Although not the most welcoming from the staff. We both had steak pie and chips. The pie was ok with lots of meat, although we both had the bay leaf still in. The mange tout/pepper/lettuce mix (which was the seasonal veg) was quite nice but spoilt by pale cheap frozen skinny chips. The table was stickier than the sticky toffee pudding (due to whatever is in the spray bottle they clean it with) but as a toffee cake it was nice with its miniscule scoop of ice cream. All in all ₤35.80 for two courses for two is a bit expensive for what you get really. Disappointing especially as we don't go out to eat very often.

My partner and I visited for a dinner and lunch here and only came the second time as nowhere else was open. The dinner we had was chicken and haggis for me and fish and chips for my partner. Suffice to say it was disappointing. The chicken was tough, tasteless and almost inedible I couldn't finish it and gave it to the dog. The veg was ok but the mash and bisto gravy also not great. I expected more for £14 to be honest. The fish and chips was acceptable but again not great. We are here a second time but only opted for a soup and sandwich to share. This still set us back nearly £20 and wasn't the highest quality either. If you come in with low expectations you won't be disappointed and be prepared to part with more money than you thought.

We ate salmon and steak. Both beautifully cooked and tastes amazing. Lovely veg although the wedges could have been cooked a little longer as some were a little hard still. Not too badly priced either. Nice setting calm cozy and relaxed.

Next to the diverse offering of good British / Scottish main dishes that are filling after a day of tests on the lake, I would certainly recommend to have a look at the desert options, which are also very satisfying.

Good food, friendly staff, lovely warm rooms. Welcoming fire in the bar, good selection of beers and pool table which helped to bring guests together. WiFi a bit erratic, possibly due to the hotels position, surrounded by hills.

We went for a bar meal after walking Ben Vorlich and we were all really hungry! The Clachan itself had a reputation locally for serving hearty meals at reasonable prices though we'd heard it had been renovated since our previous visit, and presumably had a new owner. Inside it is lovely and warm with a log fire and settees and clean, modern tables and chairs giving the place a fresh, comfortable atmosphere.Unfortunately the food was only just average, but overpriced for what you got. The soup was lukewarm. The portions were erratically sized, e.g. the fish and chips was a large portion with two pieces of fish (£13.25, nicely cooked but the fish was tasteless), whereas the steak pie and macaroni and cheese (£12.95 and £9.95 respectively, nicely cooked, again, if equally bland and tasteless) was more like a child's portion, served in a small dish on a dinner plate whose only other occupants were a small salad and either chips or a toasted bread roll with a smear of butter that attempted to pass itself off as "delicious garlic bread". The baked potatoes (£6.95, yet again, quite well cooked) arrived with such minuscule portions of filling that everyone almost immediately send them back for more.Maybe it was the chef's day off? To cap it all, they charged an extra 40p to pay by plastic and the waitress couldn't give me an accurate receipt because the till had archived my bill once she'd marked it paid. That said it all. <sigh>

Went here for a Sunday evening drink and although plenty of people in the bar, which gave it some atmosphere, the man and lady behind the bar certainly need to smile and at least converse with the customers. We read poor reviews before we went away but thought we would give this place the benefit of the doubt, but I have to say it was not a place we venture to again during our stay just along from the pub. I t has so much potential and not being used to the full.

Seems to have very different reviews. we stop there last Thursday and we were a group of 12 bikers. The staff was very helpful despite being on her own.The food was fine, and I was very surprise to be able to get a smoked duck salad with beetroot, which was very nice, and did change from the burger or fish and chips!!!And we all ate outside with a superb view and the sun. Although I do not think it was organised by them!!!!!

Menu is the same for both restaurant and bar - lunch menu is available all day. Laminated menu so it will rarely change but do have specials on blackboard. Not cheap but not expensive - first night we had venison burgers which seemed processed as oppose to home made with steak pie/fish and chips second night which were definitely freshly prepared on the premises.

We had to wait around half an hour, but when the food did arrive it was very tasty. I thought initially that my meal was a little sparse, but it was very filling and hot. The chocolate sundae is delicious. The only reservation is that the staff did not look very happy and it was not packed.

Stopped in with a couple of friends after a morning's walking. It was after 'normal' lunch time and we weren't sure what, if anything, would be on offer. (We just wanted a light-ish snack.) We were pleasantly surprised by the flexible offer of a range of sandwiches, snacks and smaller portions. Each of the three of us opted for a half-portion of fish and chips. Tasty, well-cooked food served fresh and hot. The dining and bar area are spacious, well-decorated and comfortable. Welcome and service were notably friendly and efficient. I was also given an opportunity to view the Indian Restaurant (?Nanja) which is part of the Kirkhouse Inn. This is a delightfully styled space and I would really like to try it. So, overall, a really good lunch experience where the food, the drink, the staff and the environment worked perfectly in harmony. A place to be re-visited!

My friend and I selected black pudding on a roll with our coffee. At the till, I honestly thought the woman serving me was joking…..asked me if I had one, two three pieces of black pudding. I told her two and she then asked me to lift the roll to show her! I thought she was joking……she was not!!!! Poor customer service and very overpriced!
