Church Stretton Fish Bar in Shropshire

It's bad. We visited here on route to the top of the hill. It was so bad we turned around to take it back for a refund. Kebab was chunks of cold soggy meat. Fish was old and batter was crackly hard. Chips were actually good quality just not many of them. 2 specials cost us 15 quid but was worth no more than 50p. Avoid.

I ordered roe and chips in a tray with curry source. Sitting in the car eating a load of crispy hard chips that looked re heated, there was no curry source. She cooked roe but not long enough £5.20!! I took it back and said that was a complete waste of money and I left not wanting to bother waiting for a refund. I think this below average score says it all. Don’t bother. 1/10

Ordered two fish and chips and a pie and were perfectly crisp and well cooked, service was excellent and friendly, will come again

Can't comment on food as didn't get the chance to order food. Walked in to 1 customer waiting and young lad and female behind counter. Didn't speak. Waited and nothing. Customer waiting collected food and walked out. Male staff said Yes. I then said I think it's very rude for customers to walk in and not be greeted or even an hello. Male response was ow well. I said if that ya attitude i will go else where. His response was ok then. Shcokinh customers service skills. I asked for owner to which he got the female. I said my reasons and she apologised but I won't be returning but I appreciate her apology 😌

Great selection and fast efficient service, chips were alittle undercooked but fish, sausage and roe were fantastic

Apprehensive about visiting after reading the reviews but we were passing through the village. I’m so glad we stopped. The food was amazing and we were well fed arriving late to campsite to pitch up. The chips were lovely

Pretty awful. Sausage/chips x2, mini fish/ chips, mini fish on own, pitta with salad and pie and chips. Asked for meals to be in trays as we were eating alfresco, bill came to £39.60 which I thought WOW. Quick maths from the board came to £23 so I queried the price and she told me the extra was for the trays as trays were expensive!! I could have bought china for that!!! Sausage tasted terrible and small amount of brown lettuce in pitta! This chip shop is one to be avoided.

Coming from someone who serves food and works in a kitchen, I got a super burger which was £5, the bun was dry and the cheese looked like it was from sainsburys, my chips were stuck to the paper and tasted like pure awfulness, not one thank you or have a nice day from the workers, and also got dirty looks from the women working there

had a lovely day out in carding mill valley with friends and decided to stop and get a kebab, in which i was looking forward to enjoying. On the contrary, the man who served me was very blatantly rude and unfriendly. Although the kebab was served quickly i do believe that was for a very good reason. I paid £11 in total and recieved an item hardly recognisable as a kebab. The meat was severely undercooked and dry to the extent where i couldnt finish it. I also recognised a lack of hygiene and cross contamination, with small chunks of fish being in my kebab. I complained to the owner about the situation to which he replied “sound”. Would not recommend any person with an ounce of sanity will go somewhere else.

Me and some friends ordered some food that came to £26. The service was absolutely terrible and depressing. It was almost like the young lad was being forced to work. The chips were ok but nothing special. I had a chicken burger that was clearly a cheap Birdseye knock off and cost me over £5. My friends cheese burger looked like something I wouldn't feed a pig. Wouldn't recommend going

£26 spent on 3 meals, really poor service, really poor attitude, not a conversation or smile to be seen anywhere. chicken portion was ok, burgers were awful.... thin, processed burgers most likely from Iceland budget isle. Has 2 stars because you can't really fail to deep fry a piece of chicken. Would definitely not recommend.

Probably one of the most expensive chippies I've been to. And not always freshly cooked. ( Been standing) So warm very dry. £3 for warm dry chips ?. A scallop at 90 pence. My usual chippy in Welshpool charge 40 pence for a lovely fresh scallop. No wonder they are always quiet. 🤔

Waited ages for food to be prepared. Once done the quality was poor. Asked for sauce and salad on kebab, anyone would think there is a war on with how it was rationed. Wouldn’t recommend

Not good sorry to say, fish was very dry, batter had a very odd taste, wasn’t cooked to order and could have been sat for sometime (lunch maybe)? £24 for 2 x fish/chips/sausage/small peas, don’t like giving bad reviews but think you need to up your game for that cost! We will not be a returning customers.

Managed to give seven people diarrhea. Chips don't taste like chips; probably not even a potato product. Watered down vinegar. Barely any salt. Cod isn't even cod. Mashy peas watered down and now flavour. Absolute scam

First time we went here, my friend ordered a bag of chips and asked for some hot chili sauce on his chips and was told “I can’t do that. It’s only for kebab.” It wouldn’t kill them for a squeeze of sauce for goodness sake. My egg roll was super soggy but my scallop was good. Second time we went here and ordered chicken kebab and chips, my friend was “allowed” his chili sauce then but the portion he got was seriously laughable. The tray itself couldn’t hold a slice of cheese, it was that small. The food itself tasted fine the second time. The lady had to ring up the £1.80 difference and charged my friend this when it was her mistake when she forgot something… again… £1.80 loss wouldn’t kill you. For what you pay, you really get cheated with the amount of food you get.

All batter… NO fish… all breadcrumbs.. NO scampi…and very greasy. Not worth the money. Won’t use again. ……………………………..

We've stopped by a few times while passing through town for fish and chips, and we have always been satisfied. We sit in to eat, and food is served fresh out the pan, hot and crispy.

Dont bother coming for kebab meat after 8pm as they dont serve it! Me and my partner then had to choose an alternative. So pie and chips, saveloy and chips, and a spring roll cost over £17!! Avoid this place!

Chips and peas were fine but I Will not go here again. £7.30 for a slice of over cooked chewy fish and disintegrated batter. Money better spent elsewhere.

WHAT A RIP OFF!!!! just ordered the ‘special’ small sausage, fish cake small curry and chips for £6.15… there was about 10 chips in the tray and I asked for Irish curry and was given the wrong sauce. Don’t think I’ll be bothering to return anytime soon

Very busy, so can forgive missing part of the order. Luckily, we had only got to the car when we realised. Very good chippy plenty of choice.

Gets very busy, allow half an hour from entering to leaving as the ques don't move very quickly. But relax, enjoy the peace, when else would you have this time to yourself. And, it is so worth the wait. Food is great. The person serving recently is great, friendly, welcoming, accurate. Give it a go, you will be glad you waited.

Awful fish and chips,have used this chip shop before when visiting church stretton always ok,but won't be using it again fish was terrible someone needs to learn how to make batter.

Not as hot as I would have liked but a good meal once I air fried it. One cod and haddock and chips £15.

Called in for fish and chip lunch unfortunately I will never come back. Fish was covered in a thick, soggy and spongy batter (most of which went in the bin) and the chips were dreadful warm ups that were mostly inedible. My partner got the chicken kebab which although he did eat it he said it was luke warm and quite tasteless.

£3.80 for a large bag of chips it was that small we had to order 4 bags the chips was horrible and tasted old they was so greasy I wouldn't bother going,, for a small town you would expect a decent chippy.

The fish was not fresh, it was really dry with soggy batter. I think it had been sitting in the hot counter for a very long time after being cooked. The gravy was taken out of the pan, put into a carton and heated up in the microwave! The chips were alright to be fair.

We popped in for a quick fish and chip lunch, however the anaemic looking fish persuaded us to just have the chips. Unfortunately its not so easy to assess these until you've actually got them in your hand. They were equally pale, undercooked and only fit for the bin. Cooking chips is not rocket science so there's no excuse for getting it wrong particularly at the prices currently being charged.

Absolutely abysmal, the worst fish I've had in my life..and I'm getting on in years. The thickest claggy batter I've ever seen covering a thin sliver of fish I could hardly find. The sausage we bought for the dog was fit only for a dog but in fairness sausage at chip shops usually isn't great. The only plus was the chips weren't dreadful and there wasn't much of it. I don't know how they get away with serving such food, I'd be embarrassed if I was them Wouldn't return and definitely don't recommend.

Amazing crispy chips and fish plus battered mushrooms. Delightful staff. We visited Saturday night after a lovely pint of Guiness in the Bucks Head. Myself, sister, partner, and mum aged 91. We are all ex stretton but now live in Shrewsbury but always come back to stretton for a wander about and then visit this chippy. It is always spot on and this is the case over many years

I just bought fish and chips. The fish is off, one bite I was nearly sick, smells and tastes off. Even my dog turned his nose up when offered a bite. Chips recooked many times, cold and dry. I'm angry that iv paid £9.00+ for this crap

One of the worst chippys ive ever had, everything soggy and ridiculously overpriced.

Food was OK, but christ do you have to wait for it. The two battered sausages looked like they were waiting a while to escape, food is not greasy but I think it's just evaporated due to the time spent in the heating cabinet. No personality or customer skills from the staff.

Horrid fish, cold and fatty, chips inedible,, cold, full of black eyes. Place to go if you love igastly fish and chips.

Nice chips but a tiny portion, again. I’m local and have been going here for years. More recently we’ve been travelling further, to craven arms, where the chips are slightly better and where the portion is at least half as much again for the same price. Tonight I went back to Stretton chip shop where I waited 10 minutes (as they never have enough chips cooked and ready). I was waiting at the end of the shop, as other people were queueing, when I heard the one member of staff say to the other “there should be enough” whilst the other member of staff struggled to get every last chip out of the warming tray. On seeing the wrapped up portion, I politely asked “is there a full period there?” to which both staff replied “yes”. When I got home and opened them up, there were barely enough chips for a child. A real shame, as I like using local shops and takeaways and don’t usually write negative comments but they really do need to buck up their ideas and stop exploiting the fact that they are the only fish and chip shop in town and have a captive audience. Personally, I’ll be going back to craven arms in the future

Our family of four had fish and chips from here last night. The fish was freshly cooked to perfection. The chips were delicious too. The premises are spotlessly clean and the service was efficient and thoughtful. Highly recommended.

The chips are not very good and the chicken was very dry. Prices are quite expensive for what is on offer. Will not be revisiting.

Called here on a stop off on our motorcycle trip. Really friendly staff, chips were perfect. I’d never heard of “Irish curry sauce” and so the lovely staff member gave me a sample to try (defiantly give it a go it’s delicious!). Highly recommended and we’ll be back there next time we’re in Church Stretton.

We’ve had a busy day walking and I was desperate for fish and chips! Phoned ahead and ordered thankfully, collected at five. Drove up the Mynd and literally soaked up the sunset with a delicious meal! Piping hot food - quality fish and yummy curry sauce. It will go down as one of my best meals and one we will remember for a long time 😚

This family have run this fish and chip shop for 32 years and boy does it show. It's been a long time since I've had fish and chips that have taken me back to my childhood. Fresh fish, the nicest chips and the very best Irish curry sauce. We come to church stretton for these fish and chips .. and we add the day out in. Wonderful people that own it, well done and please dont ever retire!! THE BEST!!

well how do i start. chips were cooked in old tasting oil which left a nasty tast in mouth. fish was the frozen sort and cooked so long batter was in edable and also left a nasty tast. will never go there again. if i was closer to the chipshop i would of taken both fish and chips back.

I had battered sausage and chips. The chips are amazing. The batter on the sausage was perfect. I'm writing this after my second visit in only two days as I had to go back for more. It doesn't get much better than this.

£3.20 for a large bag of chips which was tiny.they tasted like they were reheated from the night before. Also had a grey hair in.

Great value for money, not greasy, fish still has skin on and is very fresh! By far the best chippy I've been to in a long time, will definatley visit again.

Not a chip shop I would go to again fish was dry and with the skin still left on chips were hard aswell as if they were yesterdays

Called in last night on my way down from Chester to Devon as the town has a couple of electric vehicle chargers (yes town council, they do bring in trade!), wasn't expecting too much as you often take what you can get whilst out on the road. So pleasantly surprised to be eating some of the best fish and chips I've ever had...lovely fish in light, crispy, non greasy batter, generous portion of chips, beautifully cooked, and again not a hint of grease on the paper, and excellent value. I make this trip fairly often, so no doubt whatsoever I'll be returning in the not too distant future.

This is a very nice place for fish and chips. I ordered cod fish and chips, the fried cod was fresh, firm and juicy and tasted amazing. They also accept card payments now which is great! will definitely recommend this place if your coming to try fish and chips in church stretton.

Reasonable but certainly not a chippie I would visit again. Poor church stretton, most small towns needs a good fish and chip shop. Church stretton is certainly lacking in that department.

We dont often use chip shops. However, every visit to Church Stretton we have chips here. Fresh, tasty and pleasant staff. One of the better chip shops.

It may be ok to have triple cooked chips but not the fish

Eat here at least once every visit to Church Stretton. I think that every time I have been here there is always a queue, many patrons appear to be locals. This time I dinned at the table in the corner. Food was very good and a good portion

With so many other great food options now in Stretton, the Chippy continues to disappoint. Expensive, small portions which vary in quality and slow service. We gave it a number of chances and it really is the last resort for a takeaway. Needs new owners.

Best Fish and chips i ever did taste...The fish ( Haddock ) was in a golden batter and the fish inside Oh my word!...it was so succulent...ummm The chips were to cry for ...certainly from the best potatoes in the South.... What an experience🤩

Placed an order here during our family holiday. Chips and the battered sausage were ok but the fish was a real let down. The pieces of fish were a lot smaller than we are used to and the batter didn’t taste very nice. They weren’t overly hot either. Wouldn’t return.

most unhygenic place where told to pick chips of a dirty floor into bucket of chips to be made to cooked/tiles where coming of the walls flies and mouldy chips behind barrels , the barrels that the cut chips are put inton are yellow and almost uncleanable my family have been ill from hairs in food here and is disgusting would never recommend friends have had to return food / bread buns for being mouldy

Staff very rude and like many others have said you wait ages! Ordered chips, sausage, peas and curry sauce. waited 10 mins. Literally should be a 2 minute order. Chips are so hit and miss. Had some that are ok.... had some that are disgusting.Not nice to see staff putting gravy in the microwave as you order it. Warm it up before you open!Church Stretton is nice... this chippy isn’t Im afraid

Interesting friendly town, nestled in beautiful scenery. Lots of independent shops, some very good eco friendly. Good community hub, mix of eateries. Vast Antique Market housed over numerous floors.Well worth a visit and to support of an active town centre. Free street parking options as well as paid car parking, fairly priced.

We called here for a fish & chip tea after walking the local hills & countryside. To say we were disappointed would be a huge understatement .The chips were awful, I think they must have been cooked a long time before being served. The 2 fish again we're awful, grey fish, hard batter, again I think they had also been cooked a long time before being served. I couldn't eat my fish & chips, my partner did eat as much as he could face of his small piece of cod, but threw the chips away. We visit the area a no of times during the year to go walking. There is no doubt whatsoever, we will not be walking into this chip shop again.
