I'VE ONLY HAD COD AND CHIPS HERE BUT ITS FABULOUS AND SENSIBLY PRICED. SEATING AREA IS GOOD TOO, STAFF ARE EXCELLENT AND FRIENDLY.

I ordered a takeaway for collection of fishcake, scampi, chips and mushy peas on a Thursday evening. Both people I spoke to were friendly and helpful and the food looked fine. However, upon getting home and eating the fishcake, and especially the scampi, tasted chemically and like it had freezer burn! The next day both my Friend and I have been violently ill with sickness and dihorrea! Maybe we were just unlucky with what we had but BE WAREY EATING FROM HERE!!!

Pre-pandemic, this takeaway/restaurant was a favourite, and used to be packed lunchtime. It has since changed hands. Today the restaurant was nearly empty. It was spotlessly clean, the service quick and friendly, and the cod and chips my wife and I had was really fresh, well-cooked and great value. I think it deserves support. (I did not think to take a photo of the food, but the dark mess shown on this page looks nothing like what we were given.)

Huge portion of fish, reasonably priced.

Very nice fish the chips was not outstanding we was the only two people in the diner and the chairs on other tables was still up on the other tables. Was not asked if we was satisfied only after we went to pay

Actually went into Jackson's the other fish and chip shop near the Witherspoon's it was all OAP's getting a cheap meal I'm not a big fan off this why should we pay full price and the OAP's get a cheap meal so turned back round and walked out tried this Fish and chips restaurant never used it before so ordered Haddock and chips with curry sauce it was the best haddock in years really flavoursome and perfect chips proper chip shop curry sauce👌

I don’t know if you guys actually know what salt and pepper chips are. Your “version” had no peppers, no onions/spring onions, no chillis just some added spice ontop that wasn’t even spread out evenly 🤣 do not recommend, something that’s so easily made.

I always pick up a pensioners fish & chips with mushy peas every Friday, for my father-in-law, who absolutely enjoys them. However yesterday I decided that I fancied fish & chips too, so bought some for myself and my husband later that evening. Well we absolutely enjoyed them so much, that we both even mentioned it this morning, so I decided to leave a review (I don't do this often!) Don't hesitate to pop in and try as the owner and his staff are lovely too.

When I heard Chippies Plaice had new owners I was a bit concerned... However visited today and although the service needs to be a little 'streamlined', the fish and chips was exceptional. Freshly fried cod was beautifully cooked, very white and thin crisp batter. Chips were golden and tasty, and not too greasy. Overall I was very pleasantly surprised that the new owners have been able to maintain my high expectations! Cooking excellent, service good, just needs a tiny tweaking.

Not as good as it used to be. Food is still good but the friendly atmosphere has been destroyed, seemingly by the man they called "Bob" who was doing the frying. Everyone was treading on eggshells around his stroppy, storming around. What makes it worse is that he was the weak link in the chain. Waited for ages for him to get his act together whilst the poor young lad and ladies serving were left to deal with the aftermath. Won't be going back after years of custom under the old owners. Bob needs to sort out the way he acts and works in front of customers or find something else to do as the business will suffer.

The new owners are very nice people, but unfortunately the chips are not to the same standard they used to be, every time I’ve had them they have been undercooked and not crispy/fluffy as they should be. I would personally rather wait in the queue for another five minutes and have the food cooked correctly rather than getting out quick and being disappointed with the meal.

Everytime we get fish and chips from here it's always brilliant quality and beautifully cooked. The staff are always welcoming and friendly. Wouldn't go anywhere else for our weekly treat.

I have picked up a small takeaway treat on my way home every Saturday evening for the last decade. This shop is consistently friendly, efficient, and the food perfectly cooked. I was a little concerned when I noticed that new management had taken over, but I can assure you there has been absolutely no negative impact on the quality of the food nor the service.

Whats happened , new owners. From the best to the worst chip shop .(sit in) Cold saveloy and chips lovely🤢 14:00 hrs 24/09 . I did not know until we had left,done the usual my partner said the food was fine when it wasn’t . I returned to complain but closed. My meal was okay i will give them that.,

I've seen some negative reviews but speak as I find. Visited here a few weeks ago on the way home from Teignmouth. Was surprised to see no queue and hadn't realised it had changed hands. That said, the staff were polite and courteous and the fish and chips were just as good as they have always been - excellent. We shall continue using the place.

Used to be the best chip shop in Newton Abbot. Now under new management it appears that quality has taken a severe hit. Chips undercooked, batter below average and everything is very dry. Suspect they might be using frozen ingredients. Very disappointing, will be buying elsewhere in future.

poor service to the point of being rude ,poor quality chips and appalling chicken nuggets ,long wait (not that busy either ) 80% went in the bin what a shame it use to be the best in town

We used to love this chip shop and we knew it had changed hands recently. We have tried it twice since and it is awful. The sausages were cold and the chips were undercooked. We did not enjoy it at all, Very disappointed. The service was also very slow. We will have to look for somewhere else.

Waited for a good while. Expected a freshly cooked piece of cod. Previously good so I did not open the box. I could not see the piece of cod I was given. The two female staff spoke quietly together. I was given an old piece of cod in batter, that looked like it had been put aside for ditching. It was horrible and overcooked and stale. The chips were slightly undercooked. They have lost a Customer. I will never go back again. Terrible and shoddy quality

Really really tasty fish and chips ever in the UK. The fish with light butter make it very crispy even better than before.

This has always been an excellent chip shop in the past,... we drove (past many others) to get them because you were never let down. However, our visit a few days ago was distinctly average, the fish and chips, while "ok" were not the usual excellent standard. Chips seems a little undercooked and fish batter not as crispy as usual. Have heard rumour of new owners... if so... just do EXACTLY the same as the previous ones! Might give it one more chance, please don't let me down!!!

The order given was not what we got, a total disaster when we opened the boxes at home. My wife ordered fish & chips once and 2 fish...we got 1 fish with chips in one box, and in the other box there was also chips and 2 very small pieces of fish. See Photo...We have never been let down before with service or quality, always good service and fish and tasty chips to die for..Total cost today £21.

We wanted fish n chips and decided to give this chippy a try as so many people raved about it. I was quickly and efficiently served and the quality of the fish and potatoes was superb. Light batter, not greasy, Beautifully cooked. Thank you. We'll be back!

Decided to try the hake and chips special. It was cooked to order which didn't take long. I'm really fussy with fish. Don't like strong tasting fish. I was told it was similar to cod. I'm glad u tried it it was lovely had with with their mushy peas which are delicious. I really enjoyed it. Will definitely have it again. 😋 Defo 5/5

The best fish and chips around. The chips are crispy and soft in the middle, the fish is large and tasty and the curry sauce is the best in the UK. Perfect!

Oh yes, the whole family loved the hand cut chips and freshly fried fish here. The burgers are delicious too.

I've known Carl and his wife the owners for many years. All that needs to be said about Chippies Plaice is that since around 2009, I have always had perfect customer service, with the very best meals always. Regards Keith Riley.

We have been going to Chippies Plaice for a good few years, but when Covid hit us things changed and we couldn't go and eat our lunch inside, we really wish they would do take aways as then we could have our beautiful fish and chips at home. But anyway I want to say to everyone that these really are the best fish n chips in Devon. We used to live in Teignmouth and always made the trip here, but now we have moved to NA so hopefully will be back eating our favourite meal soon. The BATTER used is absolutely the best batter in the world. Thank you Chippies. X

This was my first time I bought from this place and I was pleasantly surprised! Great staff, quick and efficient service. I joined long queue however it was moving fast. They provide fantastic packaging and the food is THE BEST EVER. I don't think I had better fish.

Great chips, been going there for years. Got some chips and the veggie burger and curry sauce as I was told they were vegan friendly, the veggie burger was good but looks like it was bound with egg, the curry sauce was very good! They did not take card, which was disappointing considering the current pandemic, but there's a cashpoint around the corner which is pretty convenient.

The batter on the fish was too thick and greasy and soggy greasy chips, not the best I am afraid

I only found out aboit this place from a local when i was on holiday nearby. It was very busy when i wenr there (always a good sign) to get a quick bite. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that they do gluten free batter at no extra charge (it took longer as they use a different frier - it shows that they take it seriously). Will revisit next time I'm in the area

Not been to chip shop in ages. Huge queue outside. Ordered unbattered sausage and std chips £3.70 .....reasonable l thought. I didn't order meat free sausage but it had to be the worst sausage I've had from a chippy. Chips were good but portion size was quite small. I'm not sure if l was given a vegan sausage but it was not good 😐

This use to be my favorite chippie in Newton. But due to constantly rude staff. Them never being open when you need them and not having delivery. I won't be coming back !!!

Favourite chip shop in Newton Abbot. Had chips from here as a kid and still get them from here every time without fail. My favourite! Good amount of salt and vinegar too. Fish cakes are amazing.

Always quick and efficient, lovely family run business and the food is always wonderfully fresh and hot! Nothing is too much bother for them! We are quite regular customers and it would be a difficult decision for us to go somewhere else in Newton Abbot for fish and chips!

This is the best place for fish and chips. The staff are great, very pleasant and helpful. If I'm craving takeaway, this is where I always go.
