To give it 1 star is generous. We got there at 8pm on a Saturday night to be told there was no food left. Only egg fried rice or chicken satay. There was no one in and only one waitress clearing a table. I noticed she had chips on the plate in her hand so had quite clearly lied! Do not go here, awful!

Last minute visit as we were passing late on a Saturday afternoon. Ordered the mixed 'banquet' starter for 4 of us and the following arrived: 4 spring rolls 1 slice of prawn toast cut into 4 triangles 4 mini chicken satay sticks 1 beef skewer with 4 pieces on it 1 teaspoon of seaweed The meat had been microwaved and was very chewy and the seaweed had no crisp and tasted like it had been sat in the back of a cupboard. When it initially arrived we sat and waited for the next plate to arrive as thought this was for 2 people but were told this was our lot...bit embarrassing really and all for £25! Lots of main course dishes not available as there was no ingredients to cook them. Eventually ordered stir fry veg, boiled rice, couple of chow meins and egg fried rice. To be fair the main wasn't bad. Stir fry veg was mainly onion, bit of celery and slice or 2 of carrot for a bit of colour. Boiled rice was cooked really well. Egg fried rice was not fried, more packet style but this made it a bit healthier. All portions were put in one bowl...saving on washing up and made the portion look bigger. Soft drinks were nice and fizzy and we got a big table so our babies could spread out a bit. Staff served the food but steered clear, I didn't hear them ask anyone how the food was...guess they already knew the answer. We complained about the starter and were given a refund for 2 of the servings. Such a shame that it's gone down hill, must be under new management as it's name has changed.

We visited on the spare of the moment, service was ok, but the staff were arguing between themselves which is not a good sign, food was very basic and bland considering it is a Chinese and basic stuff was not on the table such as finger bowls also very expensive for what we had which consisted of a mixed starter for two and a main each with a bowl of rice to share on the whole not a great experience so won’t be going back

We visited this restaurant on mother’s day early evening. We had previously visited some 12 months ago. What a difference a year makes. It could be down to the day but the service and standard of food was pretty poor. We ordered a mixed starter for three . When it arrived it was for two people so I requested the third portion which arrived some ten minutes later with a spare rib still frozen in the middle. The waiter appeared and said my wife’s main meal choice was not available so she chose an alternative (it happens). They then delivered Someone else’s meal to our table. When the meal arrived it was tasty. I had squid but there was only six very small shrivelled up pieces in the offering. All in all service was poor. Food was ok. The bill was expensive and the whole thing was a bit of a letdown. It will be a long time before I go again if ever.

We visited during the Chinese New Year celebrations for my fathers birthday. When we arrived a set menu was forced upon us, which we didn't mind as the dishes looked good. Our mixed starter arrived and immediately we was surprised by how little food there was, we each got 1 spring roll, spare rib, prawn toast and chicken skewer. Oh and I cannot forget the seaweed which we had to share 1 teaspoon between the 4 of us! we decided to let this pass, as we had a few more courses. However it was very irritating considering the one other table seemed to have the same amount of food between 2 people. The next course was duck pancakes, which seemed to be a little better. However we only had 6 pancakes between the 4 of us so we had to ask for more. Finally for the main course we where suppose to get 4 dishes and rice, but the waiter gave us 3 dishes instead. So I asked politely where the 4th dish is, to which he got argumentative. I had to find the menu and actually show the waiter the 4 dishes on the banquet! 2 minutes later he came back out with the 4th dish, which seemed remarkable how fast it was prepared... Throughout the night the service was woefully slow, and there was only 2 other tables at peak time on a saturday! The staff did not seem to care, there was never a waiter nearby to speak too and we wasn't offered drinks at all. To top it all off, the 2nd table seemed to order from the menu instead of the set banquet. I complained to the manager at the end, who to be fair seemed like a friendly person. But he had an excuse for everything, and did not offer us anything. It was quite apparent complaints where a regular occurrence and one of the other tables seemed to be queuing to make a complaint also!

We visited last year for the Chinese New Year a table of 14 and it was amazing as this also coincides with my Sons birthday. So we decided to go again this year to celebrate his birthday. We arrived to a very busy restaurant which was great as it gives excellent atmosphere. Some of us had got drinks from the bar and the remainder decided we would get wine for the table instead. We where seated and given the menu for the evening, which looked very nice. The starters then started coming out but no sign of a wine menu. The table was for 13 and there was enough started for 9 people only. Eventually we found a waitress and we stated that there was not enough to go round, she then went back to the kitchen and brought a further plate out but only with ribs and spring rolls, and said that was all there was. We eventually managed to get a wine menu and choose the wine only to be told that they didn't have that one and could we choose an alternative. We did. The duck arrived plus one soup for the vegetarian amongst us - wow soup a clear dark liquid with no taste apart from chilli, luke warm - not edible. We managed to ask for more duck to go round the whole table. The main course where do I start, this arrived cold, overcooked sweet n sour pork, totally inedible chicken dish - beef in black bean sauce - chewy and tasteless. We managed eventually to get the Manager over he asked what we wanted doing we said hot food would be a start, in the end they did replace the dishes but by now we had had enough, the rice was advertised as fried rice but no way this was definitely boiled rice. The sweet n sour was better as you could taste the pork rather than a burnt cube. Some of the party where drinking gin and lemonade but on the second round they where told - Sorry no lemonade left. These table are pre-booked so they know how many are coming why had they not catered for these evenings and got enough drinks etc in. All in all a dreadful night for the price, this is definitely our last time here. Very poor, has gone down hill very much so.

When the food came some plates we’re cold and a birthday cake which was ordered 2 weeks before never arrived. Even though we were assured through the night it would be coming out at the end , only to learn they’d ran out of cakes after other tables had received there’s. This is a place our family have regularly visited over the past years and have never felt the need to complain, however we had a different experience this evening. To celebrate an 80th birthday celebration we reserved a table for 7 o’clock and at first were greeted by friendly and attentive staff and received our starters shortly after being seated. It was then a further 2 hours of waiting and other party’s complaining we were still waiting for main courses, buying drinks we otherwise wouldn’t had to fill the time. When chasing up the order certain members of staff had attitudes of not caring or being helpful, although the manager jimmy was trying his best to do all he could for us. Unfortunately by the time the food was brought certain members of the part were leaving and the oldest member who’s birthday it was seamed very tired not expecting to be there as long as we was. We had also ordered a birthday cake to be brought at the end of the meal which never arrived and when questioned was told it would arrive any second, only to find out never existed all along. On the whole disappointing. We hope to return sometime in the future but in no means no rush and will hope for the high standards we’ve experienced in the past.

Only 6 here for Luncheon... a 1, a 4, and a 1 - rattling like peas in a paddling pool. Spotless linen, attentive owner, and a WONDERFUL outlook across the Humber Estuary. So what's gone wrong? I suspect the Management is unsure WHY it undertook somewhere so ambitious, so far from City-Centre footfall. Back to the Menu. Most Menus were barred to me because I was Single. However, I chose one of the hottest, hot, Soups of my life: needing a gallon of cold water / white wine to wash down! Then I had perfectly splendid sweet-&-sour pork, followed by Ice Cream. As I ate, one or two flambe dishes came to distant tables. They too looked appetizing. WHY do they not simply drop prices to a fiver for 3-courses, help-yourself? And shut down all that spare dining capacity, converting this space into Humberside bedrooms, B&B;? So although I was content, I suspect future patrons will not be.

Minimal portions the hot food was freezing cold, there was two of us who found a large bone the size of my index finger in the shredded crispy duck I ask for the manager as no were on the menu states may contains bones she said sorry and walked off wasn't really bothered I could of choked or chipped a tooth. A drink accidentally was spilt no drinks was offered and we was left with a soaking wet table cloth all night. We waited absolutely ages for the food no apology or explanation as to why it was so long.waitresses didn't have a clue what they were doing the guy who brought the food to the table just plonked the food in the middle didn't tell us what everything was so we had no real clue what we were eating. No cutlery provided also. If I'm honest it ruined the night and I won't be returning and I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Appalling service diabolical food.

This used to be one of our regular places to go, and after this visit, we don’t think we will be going back. Ordered some dim sum and some mains and asking them to come at the same time. Apparently it took the chef 1 hour to steam some frozen dim sum and yet, another 30 mins for the main to come. Guess what, they were not even the right ones. So I guess the waitress did not pay attention when I ordered and actually pointed out exactly what I wanted on the menu. OK, maybe she wrote it wrong but the kitchen sent this stuffed tofu with some pancakes (this must be a joke????) we ordered some pork to come with pancakes and it’s for making pork rolls. How on earth did you think it’s possible to make a roll by using stuffed tofu???? What is wrong with your chef?? Here comes the Singapore noodles when it’s supposed to be roast duck noodles??? Why didn’t you just ask if you don’t understand what we were ordering???? Anyway had to cancel whatever they think we ordered because we finished everything else on the table and we were not willing to wait for another hour for the wrong dishes. Will definitely not go back ever again!!!

This was our fouth visit to this restuarant over a few years as we live ourside the area and visit family in Hull, we always go here. We won’t be returning, it appears to be under new management. The service is slow and the attention to detail has disappeared, we asked for drinks after waiting a long time to get the attention of the staff and the drinks never arrived. The food was fine but found the service and the overall cost disappointing.

We fancied a carvery and I recalled that I seen advertisement early on this week about the newly opened eatery at mr chu.s. So I though we would give it go . On arrival noticed a rather sparse dining area looking modern with nice wooden floors and chairs/ tables . The area was divided into three to four seating areas . The carvery consisted of beef and turkey or pork . A selection of vegetables being mash -roast potatoes - carrots- stringy peas- parsnips -broccoli - cauliflower and red cabbage plus a huge Yorkshire pud . The turkey and vegetables was fine but the beef was poor to well done and chewy . My daughter declined to eat hers as it was of such poor quality . On the other hand the two meals came too just over fourteen pounds and that was with two drinks . On reflection we should of stuck to Toby carvery in willerby or wingfield farm in hessle as you know what ur getting .

We have visited Mr Chu's numerous times throughout the years and have to say the food never disappoints the service on the other hand did let it down. Jimmy the manager was very friendly and helpful as he greeted guests as they walked in. We had to send back our drinks twice as the syrup had gone in the coke and they returned with a fresh glass with exactly the same problem. When they took our order they did not seem to understand the menu when we were asking questions as we were hoping to try something different with a bit of guidance from the staff so we just ordered what we normally have to be on the safe side. The food came very quickly and tasted good enough, when we finished we asked for the bill when it finally arrived before he left I tried to say please can I pay by card as i'm in a rush, he totally ignored me and went to serve anther table 5 minutes later he finally arrives. I wish them all the best for the future with their food of the world venture but until the service improves I can't imagine I will be returning any time soon.

The day after we visited I read about how the China Palace has just reopened. It's fantastic and a wonderful place for a meal. The food is super delicious, even the vegan in our group loved her food. She said they have a lot to offer on the vegan side. The thing that sticks out for me was how clean the restaurant was. Even the bathroom was immaculate. Great views on the terrace, awesome food, good service, check out the China Palace.

We visited to newly opened Mr Chus for my birthday we had high hopes of the changes. We booked the Japanese Restaurant although it was only the light shades that made it separate the whole interior was the same as before. There were lots of very young staff standing around yet had no clue how to look after customers we had to get their attention every time we needed cutlery, water, glasses etc. They took an age to take our order.Once the meal came is was very substandard they missed my partners fish dish which by that point he said don't bother. My dad and I had ordered the lobster special it came in shells covered in sauce with nothing to crack the shells we had to ask and it took 10 minutes to get a pair we tried to do it but because it was covered in sauce it slipped out of our hands so we gave up. At the end of the meal I asked to speak to the manager the waitress came back and said he was busy so I had to tell her my complaint- some manager!!!The knocked the lobster off the bill good job as we hadn't even tried it!Would I ever go there again NO

Utterly disappointed by customer service as well as by food quality. To start with, after the refurbishment and the restaurant classified as a world restaurant, we thought perhaps it would allow us to order say pizzas, Chinese and some sushi at the same time! When we asked the waitress if this is possible, she seemed totally clueless. Anyway, we then went for Chinese. We ordered the platter for 2 people along with a couple of side starters. We were sat waiting for about an hour for the starters. In this time nobody came to us/near our table..When the starters finally arrived, we were surprised! The portions are so small. Plus our mixed platter had the satay chicken skewers missing!!!! We waited an hour almost for the main course to be served. The waiters seemed so aimless and lacked basic training. The main food arrived and the dishes were just very cornfloury, sticky and sweet, even the beef in hoisin sauce! Only the prawn noodles were edible..Quality of food is worse than takeaways. So beware-very slow serviced as we were there for 3 hours just for a meal comprising of starters and main course; food quality much below average and poor customer service too!

Me and my partner visited The China Palace which has just been full refurbished and opened officially a week before our visit. It was my birthday but did not mention this just went for a meal as it had good press unfortunately that was not the case for us we had not booked as they said most tables were fully booked we noticed that there were many tables empty all the time were there we did not leave while late but they found one for us we sat down and after 5 mins somethings were brought to the table but no drinks which we had ordered when we first sat down after about 25 mins the manager came to the table apologised after realising we had been sat there while everyone around us were being served we noticed that a group sat opposite us had finished there meal but were still there a good 30mins and were still waiting for there change from paying the bill in our case we eventually ordered our food and when it came it was outstanding so to sum up the restaurant it was a great atmosphere food was hot came quickly between courses drinks came quickly but the service was dire seemed to be a lot of staff mainly English which was a little poor as Chinese staff would have made it more authentic since inside the restaurant it was very Chinese with Dragons even chopsticks were available. We thought the drinks were overpriced but we were happy to pay for the food it was just enough and was not over faced as we had the Banquet for 2 any ate all but a small amount of rice.We believe if the staff had been trained to a better standard and more organised the serviced would have been much better

We visit Hull every few months to visit my family who are still living here. Last time we came across Mr.Chu - aka China Palace - on the banks of the River Humber and on the edge of a large retail park. It is HUGE from the outside. A little stream under the walkway to the entrance. Two huge lions greet you as you walk to the entrance. You walk in and there are several rooms for various purposes. A bar. A carvery. We went into the Chinese restaurant. Beautifully ornate. The lamps, shades and decor were amazing. Very opulent. It was very quiet but as we walked in we heard a couple of men moaning about the service as they left. This worried us - but it shouldn't have done. The food was excellent. We had the banquet for two. All the various courses were hot. Very enjoyable. The staff were extremely pleasant and nothing was too much trouble. Thoroughly recommended

Following the busiest Sunday afternoon I think Mr Chu's have ever had, "Foods of the World" is now open officially. The Japanese sushi is the best I've ever eaten, the Italian looks delicious and I'm told the carvery is very good value, but it's still the Chinese that will keep us coming back. The Hot Mixed Appetisers are the nicest I've ever found (and believe me, I've done lots of research!) and the range of dishes is excellent. If you've not been for a while then I'd recommend going.

Here is another revue of one of our regular eating places. We have been twice to the English buffet just opened in the basement. Not very busy but splendid staff who could not be anymore helpful. The buffet plate sizes fooled us on our first visit, far too much, so had a smaller plate choice which was fine. Sadly the view of the river Humber is not available in this basement situation. The concrete walls and rubbish is all that can be seen out of the windows although I believe the walls are going to altered by paintings which might not be for several months yet. Someone should look at sweeping the litter and old pieces of iron bars etc. Such a mess!Back to Mr Chu's Chinese restaurant! The food was splendid and their lunchtime special great value for money. However the attitude of the serving staff left something to be desired. Having visited this restaurant scores of times over the years why did we have to wait after our food had arrived that a request for a bottle of soy sauce took almost 5 minutes? We were also disappointed that we had to ask for a hot plate and waited at least a further 5 minutes, why so long? ASK for a hot plate with your order! Take your own soy sauce they appear to only have one!?We shall return as long as they let us in following this revue.

Took the family here for tea tonight. Was all so disappointed. Its not the food that is the problem, its the total lack of common sense of the waiters and waitresses. The service was so slow, starters were not delivered at the same time which ruins the meal. After we had finished the starter we had to ask one of the waitresses to clear the table. The restaurant wasn't busy at all, they just seemed absolutely clueless. They then delivered the main meal, again not all at the same time, no cutlery on the table so by the time you got that food was cold...... The staff desperately need basic training in how to deal with delivering food to tables. Surely its not difficult to lay a table correctly with cutlery before a meal arrives? Or if you see people have finished and there is hardly anyone in the restaurant go over and clear the plates, with a tray rather than wasting time just taking 2 plates at a time back to the kitchen? People go for a meal together to all eat at the same time too, both my meals came out after everyone else's. Wouldn't want to go back, really frustrating experience to say the least

Went here with my wife and daughter and had 3 different dishes. Sweet and sour chicken was ok if a little cold. Chinese Roast Pork Cantonese style bore no resemblence to any similar dish we have had before in 50 years of eating chinese food. It was overpoweringly rich in a soy sauce with no hint of the usual sweetness. The meat was clearly as a sunday roast would be and simply heated up making it quite tough. To make it worse this dish was virtually cold. Lamb in hoisin sauce was also mainly in a soy sauce with little or no hint of the hoisin. Altogether not good

Q Arrived at china palace late afternoon was shown to a table by a very pleasant waitress.Down hill after that only two others in restaurant .Drinks arrived pretty quickly.Seemed to wait ages for 1mixed starter to share.Main courses were brought out before I had even finished my starter and side plates used for staters were still on the table. I believe it is eticate to remove used plates from table before bringing main courses to the table seemed to wait ages for food considering very few people in restaurant. Waitress said she would bring us clean plates for our main course we were still waiting 15minutes later no one insight. We took the plates from the table behind us by this time food was lukewarm.Although waitress did say sorry to us on our way out as she suddenly remembered she had forgotten to bring us our clean plates.Manager was apologetic all the while trying to minimise the complaint.but said he did value our feedback even though it was negative. He did knock something off the bill although what we really would have appreciated was a good dining experience.A gentleman stood close to the manager made the comment "well they have only recently just opened" should that be justification for poor service. In my experience a restaurant relaunching its self would be more self aware of making sure diners received good if not excellent service.Needless to say we will not be returning

We went to the revamped Mr Chu's last Friday night 21st July, I was unaware that this fine restaurant had reopened but was pleased it had. On first impressions little seemed to have changed in the layout as we entered except that the fixtures and fittings were new and fresh. I was pleased to see the owners hadnt deviated too much on the layout as I have always enjoyed eating at the restaurant. The service was first class from entering to leaving nothing was too much trouble and it was pleasing to see the senior management on hand engaging you in polite conversation, it all adds to a very enjoyable evening and makes you feel a valued customer.Having only recently opened it was fairly quiet, but I am guessing once every realises that the restaurant is now reopen then nights will be much busier in the future. There are now different options to the original sumptuous Chinese dishes again designed to entice new customers to this wonderful venue. The sights over the Humber are always a treat especially on the long Summer nights and only serves to whet the appetite. The food was delicious we had a mixed starter and then different main courses all were tasty and went down a treat, portion sizes were spot on, enough to leave you feeling fulfilled but not too much to leave you feeling stuffed.Prices were reasonable for a quality meal, and no doubt we will be back to sample more of the same in the future

Far too expensive and doesnt fill me up. Always leaves me feeling still hungry a short time afterwards.Anyway, I visited this place and was well chuffed. Set meal reasonably priced and tasty and felt exceedingly stuffed afterwards. The jovial young man who served us was polite, amusing and spoke excellent English. The old woman who delivered the meals and took our bill was not. If I was being honest I would say she had an attitude and superiority problem !Her bad manners aside, I would recommend the China Palace.Very nice setting and lovely decor.

While taking a few days holiday in Hull my wife and I were looking forwards to eating out at our favourite type of restaurant, Chinese. We chose Mr Chu China Palace. On arrival the venue looked good, pagoda style. We were greeted by a member of staff and shown to our table. There were only about 6 people dining but this did not put us off as the weather was atrocious. We were served drinks and the manager came to take our order. The hot and sour soup arrived some 10 minutes later and was passable. we the had to wait 40 minutes for our mains, I asked a member of staff to give us hot plates with our meal and 5 minutes later she put two almost cold plates on our table, when the meals arrived my wife's was not what she had ordered, it was a dodgy king prawn foo yong with chips not egg fried rice as ordered, this was sent back and returned with the comment that "the chef says you can have the chips for free" my wife was nor amused! My duck with ginger and pineapple was placed infront of me and was the size of my hand and I could only see a small amount of duck in pieces ( at £11.90 plus £3.50 was not good value) also the egg fried rice looked unappetising being a grey colour. At this point we decided to leave (first time we have ever done this in any restaurant!) The manager came to us as we were leaving and apologised but too late, I paid for what we had had and left.
