An absolute waste of £40+ The crispy duck chow mien was greasy, dry, tasteless, with only onions and bean sprouts, no other vegetables included. The starter (chicken, ribs and prawn toast) were over cooked and dry. I travelled 20 miles round trip to visit here because it used to be excellent, I can only imagine the chef had a night off and everything was pre prepped. A real let down 😕

Used to really enjoy the food from here right down to the chips that were freshly cooked every time. Now your lucky to get edible chips and the quality of the food on the whole is not as it was. Unfortunately it's really gone down hill recently. We have given it the benefit of the doubt a few times as everywhere has a bad day but unfortunately its not improved. Corners are clearly being cut and its noticeable. Won't be ordering from here anymore. Such a shame.

I find myself writing again about the China Orchids, Cullompton but this time it is to review their take away service. I ordered a meal to be delivered very early on a Saturday evening hoping to beat the rush. It arrived exactly on time, hot and well packaged and the portions were generous and delicious. We felt that everything was freshly cooked - the biggest crispy coated, tasty spring roll ever, superb chicken satay and chicken and sweetcorn soup. The star of the meal and a new experience for us was the mixed Malayan sambal and we are keen to try this again next time we order. Sadly the China Orchids restaurant is closed at present but they are maintaining their high standards via their take away service.

Disappointed to see it is no longer a restaurant and takeaway only.

Love getting Chinese there, I recommend the duck dishes a lot, I always get duck with cashews or duck with peking sauce if I eat here

The food was adequate but they charge me almost £10 more for my order they it was priced in there menu, and there portion size is ridiculously small. But the person i ordered from on the phone was very nice and sweet

So where to start. Visited tonight ordered. Pancake roll, 2 egg fried rice, 1 chicken curry, 1 Sweet and sour chicken hinging kong style ,2 chicken Chow mains and a portion of chicken balls and curry sauce. The pancake roll had no meat just noodles. The chicken curry was tasteless and the meat chewy and the sauce was Gelatinous Chicken balls where doughy with no crunch atall. Chow main where fine and there seemed to be plenty of it. Sweet and sour chicken Hong Kong style was tasteless and hardly no chicken. This was my first time ordering with China Orchids and won’t be ordering again .is there any good Chinese takeaways anymore

The pancake rolls... You can't beat them. The best around (maybe because they're batterd) 🤦‍♀️ Tho I'm afraid everything else just tastes the same 😬 I ordered the house special with rice, king prawns with cashew nuts, and salt and pepper king prawns. The prawns were as bland as anything and definetly no salt and pepper on them, and both the other dishes came in a container FULL of onions and carrots cooked in the same sauce! . No flavour what so ever. Will not be ordering again.

Best place to order Chinese Takeaway! Although a tad expensive, it's worth paying the premium over the competition! Indoor seating area however was first closed due to Covid and is remaining closed for the foreseeable.

I never write a review as I always address face to face give you the opportunity to make good, but...One of the most vile tasting Chinese takeaways I have ordered. We had chicken satay which was a thick gelatinous bland tasteless sauce in my book not chicken satay at all , the crispy beef was again in a thick gelatinous vinergrey sauce the beef was tough and soggy as so much sauce and the Yung chow mein again bland and very cheap cuts of meat which reminded me of spam. I called them say I was unimpressed spoke to the owner who apologised and basically told me they have many happy customers and never had complaint about their food as they have always had same chef and cooked like this for years. If this was a restaurant I would have not eaten it and refused to pay. This was a Saturday night treat I will never make mistake again and in future avoid the China orchid in cullompton not that they cared anyway.

Ordered at 17.40 food turned up at 20.15 after a phone call at 19.40 Cold food tasted ok but would have been better hot without help of microwave . No sorry for being late

I did sent the Chinese a email as thought it was decent to see if they wished to comment back on my review but have heard nothing back. Tonight we ordered about £40 worth of food, which was 2 main dishes a rice and a noodle, and 2 sides. I’ve been to other Chinese’s which were a lot better and were at least £10-£15 cheaper. This one was really disappointing. I had the kung po chicken, special rice and seaweed out of the order and the chicken dish was so salty it was all I could taste and so had no more than 1-2 mouthfuls. My partner had the duck in black bean sauce and again it was overly salty this too was barely touched after the first mouthful. The rice, and noodles were fine. As a result we hardly touched our food and after paying out close to £40 I feel really dissatisfied. I have had a takeaway from here before and it was fine and I see this as a one off but this doesn’t take away the feeling of being out of pocket for something I feel was unsatisfactory. I know everywhere has to increase prices but just would expect something at least slightly worth my money. Unfortunately will not be returning

I've been going to the China orchid for years and always had a good meal from there. It's only takeaway now, but used to have a decent eating area. Good menu choice and the food is usually always available for collection 15-25 mins which works well.

Food arrived at the back end of the delivery window but didn't disappoint. We're vegetarian so ordered a selection of vegetable dishes which were all fresh-tasting and packed with decent ingredients. My wife isn't normally a lover of tofu, but found this one really good. The meal wasn't glutinous or stodgy, maybe because of not using MSG. The best Chinese takeaway we've had in a long time, we'll definitely be coming back.

Arrived quickly unlike a lot of the other reviews and the food was hot however it was pretty poor. Under cooked tofu and tasteless satay which was a real let down. Really fatty chicken balls which ended up in the bin with the tofu. Chicken curry was alright. No really anything to write home about.

I would rate the food around 3/5, it was absolutely nothing special but I knew that on ordering. My comments are regard the delivery time, 2 hours from my ordering is totally unacceptable, especially as the distance from door to door is less than 1km. Subsequently the food was not at all hot and had to be put in the microwave. Overall expensive with abysmal customer service. I will not be ordering again

Not impressed at all. The food took 2 hours to get to us and when it arrived most of it was cold. Overpriced and the quality was not what we were expecting.

Poor logistics, all other town deliveries are not as bad. two hours is bad business planning and poor customer experience. Time stated for delivery is not stated until after placing the order 😞

My wife and I were staying in a local holiday cottage and, after a long day visiting Lyme Regis, we decided that a Chinese takeaway was our ideal evening meal. China Orchids' menu is pretty standard and we were very satisfied with our meal which was tasty and filling. But the reason that I've given it five stars is that they do not use MSG. Brilliant! A tasty Chinese takeaway and we didn't wake up in the middle of the night with a dry mouth and unquenchable thirst. Almost unheard-of.

Food very nice a bit expensive re carry out . Staff front desk TWO required waited long time for young lady to come off the phone which increased my wait to around 35 minutes for 1 meal. Prawn crackers add a half bag to you menu .

Very friendly staff on the phone. The food is delicious. There is a local delivery service which only costs £1 . This is convenient and safer in our current environment. Chinese food can often feel too heavy, but this doesn't.

OK it was New Years Eve but: We ordered our take away at 18:00 we were told it would be delivered by 20:00-20:30 we phoned twice too chase it’s now 21:15 and we are still waiting and it’s not the first time steer clear of this Pantomime of a Chinese if you have any sense.

On Saturday 12 September I placed an order at 7:38pm and asked for delivery at 8:15 however, despite several calls to chase it up, the food didn’t arrive until 9:38pm. The delay was totally unacceptable. The China Orchid made no attempt to communicate with me during the delay. To add insult to injury, the apology I received (“Sorry, we’re very busy”) was accompanied by an offer of 20% off my next order! It’s a shame as the food, when it eventually arrived, was good hence the one star. I will not order from China Orchid again and advise anybody that does to have a snack available as well as a box set to occupy them while they wait.

Very disappointed tonight. Ordered for delivery at 19.45 this evening and eventually got delivered at 20.45- a whole hour late- rang several times but got told lies about ‘problems’ with the order. When food arrived, chips were totally overcooked and hard. Do not order food from this establishment!

Really good food, delivered bang on time and still piping hot. Once this lockdown is over we'll definitely go in here for again for a meal.

2nd visit and it was just as good as the first. The staff are really friendly and attentive without being over the top. All the food we have tried has been excellent really tasty and always hot, a great evening. We will definitely go back.

Fantastic Chinese. Ate here on New Year’s Eve, the food was great! I had Mixed Seafood in Sambal Sauce which contained Scallops, king Prawns and Mussels, it all tasted superb, especially the scallops. It was a decent portion too. The service was top notch also, all the staff we met were very friendly and attentive! And not to forget, the wine was great too! Look forward to returning in the near future! Only criticism would be very little dessert options, fritters and ice creams were the only options, but other than that everything was perfect

It was Xmas Eve and didn't really want to cook, fancied a chinese and phoned up order. Within 20 mins it was ready and still hot by time we got home. Staff are friendly and the prices are reasonable. The Sweet and sour chicken balls are lovely, also had Roast duck with pineapple both with egg fried rice - very tasty. Haven't eaten inside the restaurant but hoping i will do so soon.

What a meal! This my first time in Cullompton and I’d come down to see some friends. We decided to get Chinese food delivered and used China Orchid. Not gonna lie, this was sensational! Special fried rice, chow mein, duck in black bean, sweet n sour pork, ribs and prawn crackers. Just writing about it now has me salivating and craving it again! An absolutely brilliant meal. Cheers!

It has been some time since I last visited this restaurant and I was keen to see if it was as good as before. I was not disappointed. The dining room is beautifully decorated on both the orchid mural walls and in the attention to detail at the tables. Not many diners on a Tuesday evening so our group could enjoy some relaxed, happy chatting without feeling we were disturbing anyone else. Lauren looked after us professionally and made sure we were well looked after. Beautifully dressed in a Chinese costume, she was charming and attentive and seemed to know just what was required at the right time. It was my wife's birthday and she had invited some female friends. I was there to tell a few jokes and find my wallet at the appropriate time. The food was outstanding and we were pleased to see that the menu highlighted that no MSG is used in the dishes. Everything we ate from the starter selection to all the main courses were delicious. We could not fault a single dish and we all had such a good time trying the different choices and using chopsticks. I still find it a bit of a hike to the toilets which are at the top of lengthy steep stairs. If several of you are going for a meal here try and get the round table in the window. I thoroughly recommend this restaurant which clearly sets high standards in catering and presentation.

The takeaway was really good will definitely be going there again

The food was not nice. We had Peking duck with pancakes. Duck came out already shredded which we decided was from a bag of frozen duck. We are used to the duck coming out on the bone and shredded in front of you. It was really dry. Shredded beef next and it seemed like deep fried flour mix. We dissected the pieces and could see no meat in it. The starter was deep fried bits and pieces and was vv greasy we couldn’t eat it. We would not go again

A group of eight of us visited the China orchid for a friend’s birthday, the customer service was excellent, nothing was too much trouble, when I phoned to confirm final numbers they asked me if I wanted them to put a banner and balloons up for the occasion. The food was yummy and very tasty. Thank you. A very good evening

A most enjoyable meal enjoyed by 4 people, used a set meal format without spring rolls and had a half crispy with pancakes as a starter. Good value

Authentic Chinese restaurant, ideal for party booking or romantic meal for 2. The staff and service are excellent and professional in all area's. Separate bar is great for the takeaway for while I wait. I've tried the delivery, as cover my village. Normally within the hour and piping hot. China orchid's have a great vegetarian range. The home made tofu is lovely in the Tia green curry which is perfectly made like a stew/soup. The family love the sweet and sour pork balls, such a large portion of big balls of meat and batter to stuff out on. Such a range of choice to keep trying more. From duck to seafood. You get the quality you are paying for. Some of the Curry's even come with rice a bonus these days. Best Chinese in area.

Awful, worst Chinese ever had, gone down hill, tasted awful, chicken was slimy, certainly was not fresh

Whilst staying at Upton Lakes we noticed a menu at the lodge and thought we would give this place a try. I am glad we did, the food was fantastic. Fair price, reasonable delivery time and a good service. Shame we don’t have a Chinese as good as this back in Wales, I would be their number one fan.

Sat here waiting for another takeaway order. When the new owners took over we ordered for local delivery. Told an hour, waited 1.5 hours. Took no notice as they were new. Several months down the line and a month ago ordered again for takeaway local delivery. Set menu meal for two. Ordered at 7pm, told an hour, rang at 8:30pm chasing. Told another 20mins. Turned up at 8:45pm. Now here tonight, ordered at 7:45pm for us to pick up. Told 30 mins. It’s now 8:50pm and my other half is still sat there waiting. Not good enough. Your timings are terrible. New or not, busy or not - this town isn’t big enough to get away with it for long. Up your game.

Tasty. Good food. Expensive( especially delivery).

Outstanding service and top quality food! The telephone ordering was very professional, friendly and efficient. Its very rare to get such a good telephone manner from a takeaway/restaurant. Its exactly how I used to work on the phones, couldn't fault it at all. The delivery driver was brilliant; he called when he was a couple of minutes away as we were staying in Padbrook Park Hotel. Timing was perfect as he rolled into the car park to the pick up point just as I got there. Really energetic, happy and professional service from all involved. And then there's the food; absolutely perfect! Authentic and restaurant quality without a doubt; some of the best Chinese food we have ever had! I am actually in love with the mango sauce as that's something we never find in the region we live and its beautiful. A must try if you like sweet dishes/sauces.

So far I've alway's had good food here and will continue to get food here

Lovely relaxed great atmosphere very friendly staff and fantastic food

We have been using this takeaway for a number of years and food was always good, however the last two visits have ended with the food being left uneaten and thrown in the bin. It is overly sweet and sickly (even the spicy dishes which used to be hot and tasty) and the sauces are very gloopy.

Ordered from here this evening was gorgeous and so fresh. Delivery was quick too. Defo order from here again x

We found China Orchid by chance after driving through towns upon towns with most eateries closed.

Very disappointed with our take away. Had the Thai Red Curry with egg fried rice on the side. The curry was tasteless, watery and unpleasant. Neither me nor my husband could eat it and a good £6 of food ended up in the bin. It's a shame. This restaurant used to be great for takeaways, but our last few have been substandard. I don't think we will attend again after giving it several chances.

We booked a table for 4 of us on Saturday evening. The staff were lovely and friendly and very efficient. We all chose different dishes and enjoyed each one. The sea bass was especially tasty. Good wine selection and excellent variety of dishes on the menu. We had a really enjoyable evening and would definitely go back again..

We ordered a takeaway to celebrate a birthday at home so were hoping for a nice meal but were very disappointed. The starter was good but the main courses were all very disappointing to the extent that two were inedible. Our offer to return the main meal for a refund was refused with bad grace. We will go elsewhere in the future.

We ordered crispy chilli beef, sweet and sour pork Hong Kong style which were inedible and had an overwhelming taste of vinegar. The other dishes we ordered were bland but edible. The starters were good, that was all. Offered no refund for inedible dishes. Will not be going there again.

Rice and noodles nice, red curry and rangdam curry watery sadly will not be going back.

friends recommended this place also recommended by many locals,so thought give it a try,what a treat!i had chicken satay sticks which was tasty and tender,also recommend the rendang dish,had in other Chineses but not as tasty and very authentic Malaysian dish(had in Singapore),friend had Szechuan dish,a bit spicy but that's the way it should be,the owner and waitress were very friendly and attentive,would definitely go back,highly recommend!

We were taken by friends after hearing it had passed to new owners and had been refurbished. We were disappointed with the service and food. Our waitress spoke very little English and had no real idea what she was doing and got the order wrong, eventually sorted out. I know she was young and I don't blame her but the lack of training. We ordered two different meals from the set menu but when each course was brought out she had no idea who had ordered what or even what dishes she was serving us so we ended up sharing everything. She even got the drinks order wrong including a jug of tap water we ordered! Some of the starter was pretty tough chicken which proved impossible for one of our elderly friends to eat. It was just about OK I suppose but also a bit pricey for a Chinese in this part of the world. For us the food was too sweet and salty. This was such a disappointment. We won't be going back in a hurry but it does explain why the other Chinese Restaurant in town is so busy now.

Ordered a takeaway last night absolutely awful very bland special fried rice was cold didn't fancy reheating it chicken ball no separate sauce burnt on outside but not cooked on inside batter still raw no chilli in sandal beef overall a very expensive takeaway with very poor quality will not be going back will stick to our usual place as we as know it's always good but we thought we would give this a try as there new but never again was absolutely disgusting went straight in the bin if this Chinese wants to compete with the others in town then they really need to up there game as there the most expensive but from what we got the most awful in town we would of been better off just throwing £25 in the bin have given 1 star AS have to rate it but personally I would of liked to give -5 stars

Had a takeaway from the newly opened/refurbish china orchid which we were really looking forward to. The meal was less than average. The egg fried rice had a horrible after taste and the satay sauce wasn’t very nice in fact you can buy better from Tesco. All around not a great experience maybe a one off I don’t fancy trying it out again. There are better cheaper Chinese takeaways in the town.

Took 15 minutes to get through, 5 minutes to place the order, two more hours before we got our food and even then it wasn't great! Not locals but definitely won't be using this restaurant again.

Reserved a table online and were seated at a table for two in the corner there were a couple of large groups there one of which was right next to ours which meant we felt crushed no staff asked if we were ok when a little girl for up to leave the table her ling hair brushed our food! We had the sharing hors d'oeuvres to start and crispy duck and beef dishes to follow the food was good but the service was poor and slow it did not feel like an authentic Chinese experience in fact I felt quite stressed by the time to leave far to rowdy for me I would not return

Great food poor service and cramped eating

I went in on Saturday evening 7.35 order take away for 4 people plus 2 portions of chips after a 55 minutes wait when I was told 30 minutes wait got home only to have one portion of chips instead of Two Egg Fried Rise instead of Special Fried Rise 1 completely wrong meal and no Prawn Crackers. THIS IS THE SECOND TIME WE HAVE BEEN IN AND THE MEALS HAVE BEEN WRONG. We could see they were busy it was utter confusion while we were there people came in that had phoned orders in and they had no orders for them so they had to wait as well.

Meal in the restaurant, lovely attentive staff, and fabulous food. Would recommend and will definitely return.

I came here with my wife and the food was very tasty. We had the mixed au doerves for starters and a main each. Plenty of food we could not eat it all. We had a lovely unrushed meal. Friendly staff, will be back again.

Only used this delivery service 3 times and the 1st 2 were amazing, but tonight, not so good. Chicken balls were raw inside and didn't get the dish I ordered. Will may be order another time , but doubtful .

I've heard alot of excellent reviews on social media so decided to try it for myself. We ordered Sweet & Sour Chicken, Duck in pineapple, egg fried rice and chips. The restaurant staff are friendly we decided to order in the restaurant although they do accept telephone orders. We was told the waiting time and was happy to stay rather than come back , after 20 mins our order was ready. The food tasted good although one very small minor was the sweet and sour sauce tasted very sharp other than that food was delicious.
