China Garden in Stroud

Found this place completely by accident, as not local and just happened to be in the area. We will definitely visit again as soon as possible, as we were pleasantly surprised. Sad to read the mixed reviews.. yes, the place does look, from the outside, like it needs a coat of paint, but the welcome we got inside more than made up from it and the food was tasty … we found the flavours to be really good. We’ve been to quite a few ‘All you can eat’ places before and this was by far the best. We weren’t rushed - we had lots of time to choose and didn’t feel pressured to jump from course to course. The service was amazing.. everyone was very attentive and chatty and special mention must go to the lovely singing waiter. Reason for 4 stars for atmosphere is because we were first in and it wasn’t too busy - I can’t comment on when it’s full, but given the fact that an upcoming tribute band night is full, I think that is testament to how popular the place is..

Absolutely outstanding we moved to Gloucester 6 yrs ago and I can safely say this is the best restaurant I've been to by far,the service was prompt the food arrived hot and very tasty needless to say this will become a regular thing for us. More importantly we were welcomed by Michael and his colleague (who unfortunately I didn't get his name) I just can't wait to go back and try more of their delicious dishes see you soon China Garden amazing .

Ordered a takeaway for 7 people. Was ready for pickup on time. All very tasty and good quality. Will use again. Very happy

Food was average in taste, beef chow mein was just noodles, it literally only contained 3 pieces of beef which was, as I say, average in taste.

The food was very good in the main. Reasonable service and wait etc. My main complaint was the cleanliness. Chairs filthy. Needed to wash clothes afterwards. Toilets really filthy

Really disappointed, we always get a takeaway from here and have done for so many years. We ordered a house special curry to share between us both but tonight was so lacking in prawns (two) and chicken (two pieces), onions okay. The curry sauce was what I would expect from a reconstituted powder from a grocery store. What has happened?

Food was average but took over 3.5 hours to get through the meal with four food rounds delivered to 6 of us. Most of us still hungry but got too bored waiting.

Staff, service & food was amazing.. We travelled from Hereford to try this place out and it was well worth it...

My son and I came after we had heard that it was great from a couple of people this week. We were welcomed in with no booking and explained about how the restaurant worked. Top quality food, piping hot and delicious. We had a lovely time, thank you so much.

Food is lovely. But takes half hour to ring an order through. I'm sure they leave the phone off the hook so people can't call. Others complain when picking up orders that they are unable to ring through too.

Friendly staff.Food was realy good. There were 8 adults and 3 small children in our party. We were severed promptly despite it being very busy. Lots of food options to choose from.

I went here last night with a mate of mine who was visiting in the area. I had read other reviews and wasn't sure what to expect as they were all so varied. Initial impression is that it appears very canteen like.... but that is no problem to me..I was there to try the food out. There is a menu on the table, you put a money against what you want...ie 1, 2, 3 or more portions of any item. They come and take the menu away.... cook the food. Then bring your food and the menu back. You eat the food.... make more selections from the menu until you can eat no more. We often had to let the food cool down a bit before we could eat it..... that is a good thing! There was nothing that we didn't enjoy. We had extra portions of the salt and pepper prawns , the salt and pepper spare ribs and the crispy beef. The staff were really friendly and attentive. We didn't have to wait that long for the food to be cooked when the menus were taken away each time. I absolutely stuffed myself with food. What is not to love. Am already booked to go back as part of a larger group. Will be interesting to see how that works out.

Booked a table in advance for my partners birthday for 4 persons, we arrived with no welcome and were seated at the far end of the room. 25 minutes go by with no effort from staff to take our drink and food order. 10 minutes later we walk out with no apology from staff for the shocking customer service. Please limit your restaurant to 4 tables only as you can not cater for anymore than that. PS. employ more staff.

Great food, attentive staff, just felt very rushed, barely finished the food and the plates were taken away. Great if your in a rush but didn't feel that relaxed.

My go to chinese restaurant even though it's not the one closest to me, been here so many times both takeout and dine in and I've always loved it

Speedy click and collect service, the food was piping hot and really tasty. We're definitely going to be going back! ***update*** we've had loads of lovely takeaways from China Garden but tonight we ate in the restaurant for the first time. The service was great, the same tasty food and all for a reasonable 'all you can eat' price.

Not been here for a couple of years, and standards seem to have dropped based on tonight's visit. Fresh dishes were nice enough, but the rice had been cooked for some time and wasn't great. Chips likewise had clearly been cooked for some time. Service was quite erratic - ignored for a while then given wrong dishes, and some dishes never arrived. Disappointing visit considering how good it used to be.

Great food and a huge range to choose from. Freshly cooked, hot and really nice. However, the dining experience was very rushed with staff taking plates away whilst we were still eating and a pressure to order quickly. We hadn't even sat down and they were pushing us for a drinks order. Brightly lit and quite a clinical feel. Lacked a nice atmosphere.

Food was great. You order what you want a few dishes at a time. This is good because food isn't left hanging around on a shared buffet station and it stops others diners cross contaminating. It also saves on waste as you only order what you think you can eat. If you waste food it can be added to your bill (read the small print). Lots of staff around who were efficient, friendly and helpful when you wanted to know what a dish was. There is a large car park but only 2 blue badge spaces which were occupied when we arrived so we had to park on the end of a row close to the building. There is a choice of ramp or steps to access the building.

I had the house special chow mein. The noodles were nice but the veg and meat box wasn't my favourite. A few too many vegetables and not a lot of meat. But it was lovely and hot and made very quickly for me. Very helpful and friendly staff as well.

Went here for a takeaway, the guy on the counter was very friendly and the food was cooked efficiently. We have been before about a year ago and not sure if the chef has changed but the chilli didn't seem to pack a punch. Everyone else enjoyed their meals, will probably try again as it's convenient to where we stayed plus the food is OK.

I can only comment on the food, as we ordered takeaway, but i would not give this place one star, ordered 4 dishes and each one was as poor as the next, I thought with the cost of what was been charged excess of £30.00 for 4 dishes the food would be of a standard, not the case I don’t know who is giving all the rave reviews because this is not good quality food, do not be be fooled by the 5 star reviews we ate about a quarter of each dish and threw the rest away you have been warned. Had heard really good reviews about this place so was a little disappointed on our visit. The food was very basic and bland. We didn’t eat much considering it’s an all you can eat as the food just wasn’t that great. Average at best. Service was great, really friendly and food came out quick and very hot.

Clean, friendly, fast, great variety of meals. Wished I had one in my doorstep. Unusual to the combination of all these things in a Chinese restaurant, no wonder the place was heaving.

All you can eat is fantastic and lovely food and great atmosphere portions are not massive which is good because you can order as much as you want

Impossible to park , food good as usual but a bit of a wait even though pre-ordered

Booked for 6pm for 5 mature adults . Before we had even sat down we were told we had to be out by 7.30. Definitely not long enough. Felt hurried . Food very nice- but not given enough time to eat it. They came over at 7.30 exactly and told us they needed our table. Had barely finished eating. Had to finish drink in the car park ! So much for a night out ! Asked if we could take rice home - to save wastage - told NO. Definitely not recommended and will not be returning.

Food nice and hot , quick service the only downside was feeling rushed was told we only had 1.5 hour , hadn’t finished our drinks so had to finish them off stool at bar and standing outside in the doorway not ideal , not long enough when your catching up with friends

Ouch....expensive and such small portions. Asked for crispy duck for 2, not enough duck to fill 2 small pancakes. They were trying to clear dishes before we had finished. There are no prices on the sheet when you order....beware 😢

We eat from the buffet menu, item cooked to order and delivered to table. Very wide list to select from !!! Am a wheelchair user, has disable parking, and has ramp entrance but not automatic doors.

Always love visiting china garden. Haven't been since before the pandemic, but the welcome, food and atmosphere is still friendly and professional. The waiters and waitresses were very attentive and friendly along with the owners walking round and making sure everyone was happy. If you haven't been here, then you should give it a try. Be mindful to book first as it's always busy, so book early. Thanknyou China Garden, we will be back soon.

Best Chinese restaurant in the area.

Visited the China Garden restaurant to celebrate an anniversary and what a lovely experience my wife and I had. I informed the China Garden that I was disabled and in a wheelchair and upon arrival was shown to a suitable table that was prepared to facilitate easy access. The food we ordered was prepared upon request and arrived hot and plentiful and all tasted delicious. Service was efficient, quick and nicely presented and all colleagues were polite, helpful and available to answer any questions that we required an answer to. The food is delicious and staff friendly however please be aware it says in small writing only order what you can eat otherwise you will have to pay £4 per 200grams!! We didn't realise this and it wasn't clear when ordering the portion sizes. Luckily as it was our first time the owner let us off. I think staff should actually say this to you at the start to make it clearer.

Fresh, flavourful food! I used this service to place a takeaway. The guy working the window was very helpful in recommending dishes and being accommodating as I hadn't visited this takeaway before and wasn't sure of the menu. He recommended the smoke chicken which was delicious, I also recommend the crispy wonton which were fantastic. Reasonably priced, quick and friendly service. Also free prawn crackers which is always a good sign!

The best Chinese restaurant in all of the south west! The secret to the success of this place is the staff! Honestly these guys work really hard day in and day out to ensure the restaurant is always a welcoming place. We've been coming for years and each and every time welcomed back with a smile and incredibly attentive service. This place gets very busy very quickly but staff are always happy and smiling. The food is always top notch, it's all you can eat and the quality is great. I'd have no hesitation in recommending China Garden to anyone. Keep up the great job guys!!

Walked into China Garden, and turns out it was like I walked back from the garden into 1960s china style decor. The chairs had stand on them and it felt like I was sinking lower and lower. Ordering the food is done as all you can eat a la cart however, you tick a menu board for starter, main, dessert but they bring each course which takes a while and I’m pretty sure it’s microwaved. The chicken tastes watery, and the prawn crackers and rice is seeping with grease. Upon payment we were given a receipt please see attached. From 2pm they don’t take anymore food orders. We’d ordered about 1:25 and then cause the food took a while we were served after 2pm. Which meant the restaurant tried charging us the dinner price… Which the guy changed after I mentioned it. Would I recommend? I’d recommend to not go there. Also the food is laced in MSG. Which makes you dehydrated and needing more fluids. It also makes bland food taste good.

Been for family meal this evening was a disappointment from the moment we arrived..! We booked for 7:30pm and wasn’t seated until 8pm due to our table not being ready! We ordered drinks and they took 40 minutes to come! The restaurant was dirty, even the children’s high chair! None of the staff seemed to know what was going on! The food was absolutely disgusting! We ordered duck and the only thing that turned up was the side dish which goes with. I will definitely not be going back or recommending this to anybody!

Fair pricing. Buffet style pay per person, but cooked to order in rounds, food is hot and fresh. Typical english Cantonese takeaway style but with some great dishes and plenty to choose from. Worth a visit!

Regularly visited for both take away and eating in when living in Gloucestershire - it is simply the best Chinese restaurant in the area for both food quality and value for money ! The delivery service was especially helpful too. Called in whilst back visiting family and we were not disappointed . Food was still top notch , friendly efficient service , welcoming staff and great value for money . Am yet to find a Chinese Restaurant as good as this in our new area - if only the delivery would stretch further !!!

Very disappointed to receive a bill with our two children (11,14) being charged as adults. My children the biggest of which is barely 6 stone eat a fraction of an adult, so to be charged £26 is outrageous and at those prices we can never return. Meal for 2 adults 2 small children £113 (One coke, two small lemonades included). We have eaten here many times in the past and never had an issue.

Went last night to celebrate mothers day as I was out working today and my 2 lads wouldn't be here. Had another very nice meal.

On returning from Bristol Airport, stopped for a takeaway for 3 persons. A new menu was offered and after ordering i studied the prices. We often use this Chinese and each time the prices have increased. However this latest increase is ridiculous, on returning home with the meal i compared the old menu with the new one. Most prices have gone up £1 per dish. I know that we have a cost of living crises but this latest round of increases is excessive and will mean not using it as often.

We stumbled across this place, trying to find a rest room. We waited over an hour for the order. We weren't told it would take that long. There was an item missing from order too. The place was pack in the restaurant and there was about 20 people waiting for their orders so we thought the food would be amazing. I was the worst food I've ever tasted. They said they had a new chef hence the wait time . There was no apology for the wait time either. They had to turn away calls as they could not manage the order's. Diabolical service and the food matched. With dried out and over cooked prawn toast. It's ridiculous to thing We ordered mainly veg meals and it was awful and unsatisfactory!

Our second visit after our initiation in 2018! Food was as good as ever, fresh, hot and served swiftly. Staff are attentive. The restaurant is still very brightly lit and reminds me of a school assembly hall, but the food is on point.

Went here for the first time, im very dubious about all you can eat , but this was a game changer. The restaurant it self is a little shabby and could do with a freshen up, but the staff were so friendly and accommodating. They explained the menu to us and how to order. Everything was served hot and fresh. In fact it certain things were so fresh that we had to wait a while for them to cool down! The food was extremely tasty especially the garlic chilli prawns. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this place for a laid back atmosphere and yummy food! Cant wait to go back!

Order food the staff held selection menu for 2-5 mins before taking into kitchen. Beer was served from cans when they insisted It was draft. Go somewhere else, food was good, when it turned up, service was not satisfactory for today’s standards.

Greeted with a plateful of beautiful hand made cakes. Very friendly and handedness on arrival. Clean and v charming cottage.

The food was very good. Service was very good. We were part of a party of 10. We were seated on a long narrow table. A round table would have been much better. It was not easy to communicate with out friends.

Food has no taste they use Monosodium Glutamate

We booked for 18 people, service was great and the food excellent, the staff were friendly and helpful and very attentive, don’t go anywhere else !

I love love love China Garden, our favourite Chinese takeaway treat. So much so we drive past our local Chinese to drive 7 miles up the A38 to get our food. However I was quite shocked last night when we put our order in to find how much everything had gone up. It's to be expected, but means we won't be able to enjoy the lovely food quite so often.
