Bens Chinese Takeaway in Stroud

Been using Ben's for years without a problem but tonight was not good. Chewy beef and fatty duck. Very disappointed. Hope this was just a blip.

So, picture this: I stroll into Ben's joint expecting a flavor fiesta in my mouth, but what do I get? A lukewarm greeting and an interior that's as exciting as watching paint dry. Seriously, they need to hire an interior decorator who didn't flunk out of design school. Now, let's talk about the menu. It's like they threw darts at a Chinese takeout menu and whatever it landed on, they added. Variety is the spice of life, but Ben's takes it to a whole new level of confusion. General Tso's chicken meets sweet and sour pork in a bizarre dance of culinary chaos. But hey, the food wasn't a total disaster. It was edible, I guess. If you're into that kind of thing. I've had more exciting flavor explosions from a microwave dinner, though. And the portions? It's like they're rationing rice in a post-apocalyptic world. I left hungrier than a vulture at a vegan buffet. Service, oh boy. The waitstaff was about as attentive as a sloth on sedatives. I had to wave my arms like I was directing air traffic just to get a dang refill on my water. And don't get me started on the wait time – I could've grown a beard waiting for my Kung Pao chicken. Now, let's talk ambiance. The place is about as cozy as a Siberian prison cell. The lighting is so dim; I thought I was having dinner in a cave. And the decor? It's like they raided a thrift store from the '80s and said, "Yeah, this'll do." In conclusion, Ben's Chinese Cuisine is the kind of place you go to when you've lost all hope for a fantastic meal but still want to convince yourself you made a reasonable choice. It's not the worst, but it's not winning any culinary awards. Three stars, only because I'm feeling generous today. Cheers to mediocrity!

Delicious food at great prices; The chicken fried rice is phenomenal. The restaurant itself could seriously benefit from a renovation and perhaps more outdoor seating.

Loved this place! I was visiting from Korea and I needed some Asian food with rice. The place is small and simple but Ben and the other perosn working there were very friendly. They offered hot tea, and more rice! Food was good and the prices were reasonable. I highly recommend!

I absolutely love there noddles, I give them a 5 star just for the noddles and special sauce, and there rice is good, I not sure about every thing else on the menu.

The restaurant is old and melancholy. In the kitchen, an old man is wok-warming. Can get hot tea for free.

We had a delivery from Ben's Chinese Kingstanly Stroud and right from the lady taking the order over the phone it was all wrong i like my egg fried rice to be really brown so i asked for it to be extra brown and i was told it could not be done the rice is cooked in batches now that is not food cooked fresh for a start is it i found the whole experience horrible and i won't be ordering from there again

Really good food, very fresh. I ordered the chicken fried rice as takeout, chicken was fresh and juicy, not overcooked and the taste was spot on. Goes well with the included hot sauce which is mildly hot. Ambience is not great as it is a warehouse neighborhood, recommend food as takeout.

Been using Bens for years. Food was awful. Egg fried rice was inedible. Charged delivery when we spent £84.70p and even for a plastic bag when it arrived in a box.hygiene rating is now 2. Will never use again.

Our first take-away post lockdown and we weren't disappointed. Recommended to Ben's in King's Stanley by friends. Good, traditional Chinese menu with all the old favourites. Placed a telephone order, order correct, sensibly priced with large portions and a couple of freebies. Hidden away in the 'back doubles' of King's Stanley and parking tight. Will certainly order again from Ben's.

Very very nice people that own this place my food is always good hot to order and they black bean sauce it's really good make the food pop and is reasonable

Ben's is the best, no frills dining in the produce district next to Jack London Square. Love the mapo tofu and Singapore style rice noodle. Tableside fermented black bean sauce is a must.

Super slow service called in my order 20 minutes prior and still waited 20 minutes for my food ? Ridiculous service

Our lunch here was fantastic. The food was superb. David, the guy who greeted us and waited on us is truly a friendly person, and his dad, Ben is cooking in this wonderful hole-in-the-wall restaurant. We'll be back! We had Ben's fried rice, and Ben's Chow Mein. Both were delicious, and the topper is the chili sauce they make in-house. Yum!

Very good duck with ginger & spring onion, ribs and chow mein. Always very friendly when ordering although it can take a while to get through as they are very busy (only a reflection of the good food). Delivery times can be a bit hit and miss but worth the wait!

Ben's is located in the industrial part of Oakland in between produce markets. When I arrived I was happily welcomed. Excitement and enthusiasm. I observed when one employee came in - he washed his hands first and was equally inviting. I had the #26 fish with hearty veggies over rice in black bean sauce. Yum yum. I cannot believe I missed this hidden gem. You will NOT be disappointed! Bring cash, a good attitude and appetite. Come see what I mean. Only open a few hours a day. Good, simple, delicious. Had fresh veggies and chicken in brown sauce. The chili sauce is homemade and awesome.

I had the good fortune to stumble upon this humble, unassuming gem whilst prowling the Jack London area for a quick tasty bite. It took no more than five minutes to safely order, wait for my food, and be on my way with a tasty container of veggie chow mein for a price I thought impossible these days in the Bay Area. Highly recommend, will definitely be back whenever I’m in the neighborhood.

We’ve been customers of the Kings Stanley Bens for years now & have never been disappointed, prompting my review today. Food always piping hot despite delivery to other side of Stroud 👍 Delicious and spicy options, with loads too for veggies👌 Finally the option to have mains with rice for only 30p more....Brilliant 😊

The food here is so amazing! Definitely our number one pick in the future when we are back in Miami. Lamb shank (Friday special) is fall off the bone tender and increasingly delicious. And the seafood in creole sauce is phenomenal. Every bite amazing and so tasty. We got the rice and bean side and the sweet plaintains and they are great as well!

We hardly ever have take away, because unfortunately, they are more often than not a let down. But not Ben's Chinese take away. What a delight and so pleased we gave them a try; definitely will get food from them again. Fresh, lots of crunchy vegs, plenty of king prawns, no grease or watery sauce, all of what we ordered was just lush. Thank you.

Small place but family owned and really good chinese food. Was treated very well by owner! I told him it was my first time there and he welcomed me very warmly and even asked my name. Will definitely come back in the future when in the area. And great prices for generous portions

We have a take away every few months when we can splash out and it’s excellent every time. Fresh tasty and not at all greasy. Highly recommend you to give it a go! Portions are generous and delicious 😋

Only Chinese to have in and around Stroud it’s the best food fantastic, they also deliver to you and I love my chicken balls done crispy and they get it spot on crispy seaweed to die for, I always like to try different things and never disappointed

Lovely food delivered to your door. Makes the best Singapore chow mein!! There are other Chinese take always nearer to me, but I always choose Bens as I prefer the food from here.

First time here, ordered the mapo tofu with pork, hasn’t even come out yet, and the owner is offering me free sides of the Wednesday special fried chicken strips... Mapo tofu comes out... very different style than Im used to, more stir fried fresh veggies with slices of pork and tofu... but delicious and huge! For the price, it’s kind of unbelievable!

Chicken chow mein is my favorite, especially with plenty of the spicy black bean paste. So good!

Just had beef chop suey which was awful.All other meals have been great but tonight was dreadful. Chewy beef in a very watery insipid sauce. Sorry Ben's but you need to an sure all meals are up to standard. Will definitely not have this again.

This place was great and exactly what I expected. Local and family run. Really friendly workers and fast service. Food is made to order, delicious and super well priced. Will be coming back again and again!

This takeaway is situated in the village of Kings Stanley between Stonehouse and Selsley. Hidden away in a small lane behind the Kings Head pub but well worth searching for, we were staying in a holiday rental nearby and used Ben's on 3 evenings - never disappointed with the quality or superb taste. After the first visit we picked up a menu and phoned in the orders, the young lady said 20 minutes to collection and right on the dot it was there on the counter, sterling service and highly recommended. If back in the area we'll certainly look out for a Ben's.

This place is tucked away in the vegetable market section of Oakland and walking distance from Jack London Square and they serve delicious home cooked Chinese food.

When staying at The Bell, in Selsley, they don't serve food on a Sunday evening but the staff recommended Ben's. We weren't disappointed, good generous portions of nice Chinese food. The delivery took a while, but we didn't mind as we drank in the pub until it arrived.

I am appalled with the rapid decline in customer service and food standards. Overcooked food. I called to explain the issues with food, I was told "its bought in that way" nice to know the duck wasn't just cooked. I then said it was overcooked, he said "different chefs all the time" not even an apology, just excuses. I strongly deter anyone in using them until their issues are resolved. Poor

Best Chinese food in town. Excellent. Homemade hot sauce is to die for. Family owned and very friendly staff. Everything is cooked fresh when you order it.

Whist staying locally we ordered good for 9 people and weren't disappointed. Excellent flavour, quantity and quality. Everyone loved it, no complaints. Will certainly use again if staying nearby

After walking most of the day on Cotswold Way, it was a pleasure to have a good takeaway meal delivered to the B&B where we were staying.

Best to go in and order, you get your meal a lot quicker, but parking is rubbish. Lovely food. Always good?

Once again a tasty takeaway! House curry was flavoursome and ribs were lovely. Ben’s deliver but allow plenty of time as it can be up to an hour and a half wait! My advice ring as soon as you can. From past experience food can be variable but it is the best Chinese locally that deliver.

After successive bad dealings with Hotcha, we tried Bens and were not dissapointed. The delivery time was as quoted and the food was tastey. We'll be using them again

This is the only local chinese I will visit. Pineapple and Cashew Fried Rice is suuupeeeerb. Always quick & friendly service.

I just love this place!!! Always in heaven in this place. All freshly made and the black bean, jalapeño ginger sauce is to die for! Best to get there early because it gets really packed! I'm so addicted that I go there every week! Food is great...family owned...service with a smile. ..always feel like I'm family! Did I mention that they serve you a huge plate & it's cheap! Love it!

I've been going here for at least 20 years. It has zero ambience, but quite good Chinese food. Very good value. The family that runs it is super nice. Don't forget the awesome spicy black bean sauce.

I'm always a bit hesitant ordering take out due to not being able to have gluten but not any more! Ordered some from Ben's last night (chicken satay, kung po king prawn and yung chow rice - yes I'm a gannet!) and right from the knowledgeable person who took the order, it arriving bang on time and tasting delicious I was extremely impressed...

Delicious food at very reasonable prices. Owner is very friendly. Be prepared to wait at peak times, this place is very popular.

Had a takeaway from here twice, first time was great but second time my veggie curry wasn't very nice (loads of celery) and hardly any sauce. The chips were actually fries - not the type of chips I was expecting or wanted. They arrived 20 minutes late and didn't seem too bothered about this when I called them. I won't be returning here. My husband really liked his vegetarian satay beef made from bean curd. If you're veggie and eating here then he'd recommend it, but overall I'd choose to go somewhere else.

Rang to order delivery, was advised this may take up to an hour. Food arrived after 50minutes, all really hot & contents as ordered. Really enjoyable

Just moved to King's Stanley and Ben's was recommended by a few people so we gave it a try. Service was friendly and very fast. Food was very good and portions are huge. The crispy chilli beef was just that - crispy and spicy. So often crispy beef is soggy, but not Ben's. The King Prawn and tomato was chockablock with king prawns. And the Szechuan chicken was delicious. Will certainly be coming back!

Decided to try Bens takeaway as our usual great Chinese had closed due to lease ending we went for the Chicken curry far to much onion & mushrooms and the small pieces of chicken that were there gave me the impression that the rest of the Chicken had come alive and walked away the chips were clearly in my opinion were frozen fried oven chips and I'm afraid most of the takeaway went in the bin. My wife and I won't be going back.

Found this place after me and jonty went on a little punt with the golfing society. The mix of Chinese food and kebabs compliment each other in strange ways. This place has truly revolutionised the way I think about food and how I think about life. Screw the no.23 bistro and all that Gubbins. Come to bens Chinese for real food and badger meat disguised as lamb. The staff are friendly and anyone who says otherwise is probably getting played off by the noodle bar next to the post office.

Wonderful people lovely food what more can you ask for ive been going there since i was a kid and never had any complaints the food is delisious and the family staff is very nice and respectful i recomend you try this spot if you havent already low prices and food is amazing hands down .

Young local girl sighed when I asked to order . Walked out due to her attitude problem . Mix of kebabs and Chinese which is strange and says it all .
