Good old school proper Chinese take-away, every dish cooked properly, (eg perfect noodle texture) and generous portion. Very friendly customer service. My 13 year old son and I were very happy.

I wasn't that keen on the food tbh , it was ok and cooked well , fairly large portions, but I don't know , I dont think the ingredients were the best if I'm completely honest.. nice enough service, though, and the price was reasonable , parking was a little bit tricky but not impossible

First time we’ve had a takeaway from here and won’t have another. My husbands curry was quite thin and my chow menu was just so salty. Also virtually no chicken in the noodles and very little in the curry. They did answer the phone promptly when Howan was continually engaged ……maybe that’s why.

Used as normal Chinese was closed. My meal for one: Sweet and Sour chicken balls were solid as they were so overcooked. Even peeling the batter off didn't help. Beef in mushrooms had a sauce that was like jelly in texture. I genuinely don't know how that was managed. The special fried rice had one token shrimp, bit of pork and bit of chicken, and was overcooked and sliceable. All had too much salt. My partners food: Beef chow mein was ok but lacked flavour. The salt and pepper chicken wings were overcooked. We went at opening today and my partner was the only customer. We have chucked over half away of the food. Won't be visiting again.

Staff were friendly, prices reasonable, and service quite quick. The ribs were cooked nicely but the flavour was weak. The kung po chicken and sweet chilli chicken flavour was just ok, but the consistency of the sauce was almost wallpaper paste like, very gloopy and unpalatable. The chicken was overcooked and rubbery. The egg fried rice tasted strange, like it had been fried in old oil. Prawn crackers were quite soft (but free), Chips were ok though. It's a shame as we were really looking forward to it. I hope for their sake they can take this constructively and make some changes for the better. RD

We don't normally eat take-aways but Covid19 has changed so many things. So, yearning for a Chinese meal I ordered from the China Garden, based on Trip Advisor feedback. I have to say I was impressed. Firstly the staff were friendly and efficient, the food was tasty and in fact the portions were extremely generous and the price just fine. So they have my vote for the future.

Fancied a takeaway tonight - first time since lockdown unless you count McD's. I walk past this place several times a week but never ventured in but I thought I'd give it a go. Got the set meal for one for £8.80 and even by time I'd walked the 10 mins or so home it was still hot. More than I could eat so the cat got some too. Will visit again

Newbury no longer has a Chinese sit down restaurant....we lost the Laurel several years ago and nothing has come close since. However, China Garden despite looking unpromising, really does come up trumps with its food. It appears to be run by a mother and daughter, daughter covering front of house. The food is always piping hot, very tasty, very pleasing. Delighted we have this great take away on our doorstep.

So this was probably the last Chinese on my list to try as couldn’t find one that was any good since moving to Newbury and couldn’t keep travelling to Thatcham as it was cold when I got home. I ordered by phone and the lady was very polite and helpful. The building is very small and with the big black curtain it looks quite off putting. The food was ready when they said it would be and wasn’t that expensive. We had the mixed starters, half a duck, extra pancakes, crispy chilli beef, crispy chilli chicken, sweet and sour chicken, egg fried rice and noodles. Reasonably priced £40 for 5 people. Everything was lovely the only niggle was there was too much batter on the chicken balls ... but they weren’t greasy and the chicken was nice. Everything was lovely and tasty and would definitely use again... just a shame they don’t deliver

I think it was awful, one of the worst Chinese meals I have ever had.It was that bad I could only finish half.I usually go to the lotus garden, but as I only had my card on me and they don't accept orders under £10 I had to try this place.I had sweet and sour pork hong kong style. It was horrible,it was just like syrup for sauce, too sickly sweet could not eat it and the "pork"There was hardly any pork in it just deep fried batter.I would recommend anybody steer clear of this one.I only thought I'd try as it had good reviews, but it always looked ropey.I should have trusted my instincts.

I don't normally do reviews, but I feel I need to warn locals about the very poor quality of this food.I ordered a special curry with egg fried rice and a chicken chop suey with plain boiled rice, a portion of chips and a couple of crispy pancakes. The curry was truly disgusting. I have no idea how the sauce was made but it was almost black and had the consistency of a runny, lumpy jelly. The meat was nearly all chicken with one prawn, two small bits of what I assume was pork and some bits of stringy chewy beef. It was bulked out with lots and lots of onions. The chicken was obviously the cheapest cuts and so over-processed with water that it just dissolved in the mouth and were it not for the black goo sauce, would have been totally tasteless. The chicken chop suey was just the same processed chicken and beansprouts in a watery over-salted sauce. Not a single pea, carrot or bit of broccoli in sight. It's a toss-up between the two dishes which was the worst.....The chips were dry, over-cooked and looked (and tasted) like they had been made last week and reheated. I ate one chip and that was one too many! The pancake rolls were barely edible and just a dryer mix of what was in the chop suey dish in a thick, dry pancake roll - again - obviously made some time ago and reheated. Now, you can't get rice wrong - can you? Oh yes you can...! The boiled rice was OK, but over cooked and stodgy while the egg fried rice seemed to have little or no egg in it and had a nasty burned flavour. All in all, a horrendous experience. The chef needs to be sacked on the spot and someone who actually has a clue about cooking needs to be employed before word gets around about this place and they go out of business. There was one good thing about the China Garden, and that was the lady who takes the orders. She was polite and friendly with a lovely smile - just a shame the food is possibly the worst I have ever eaten...!!

Yes, the exterior is shabby but it's a decent little takeaway. The lady who's usually on the till is always cheerful and very pleasant, and the food's pretty good. I think the chips from Lotus Garden are slightly tastier than from here though!Handy location - China Garden is at the entrance to the road that leads to the south side of Newbury Station. I can't comment on delivery, as we've always gone in person. I've never had to wait very long for the food.

We followed some other reviews and tried a meal from but we had an awful meal. The S&S chicken balls were at least a half inch thick in batter and cooked in dirty oil. The boiled rice was more like a paste and, the veg Foo Yung was burnt and was mostly onion. The prawns and black bean was poor as well. All in all very poor. My boyfriend took me to this take-away only Chinese restaurant on our recent trip to visit his hometown. China Garden was good food at a good value. I felt like it was exactly the same type of fast food Chinese that was get back home in America. We had the pork balls, fried rice and a mixed veggie dish. All of it was very good. There was a problem processing our credit card from America. We did not have a problem with the card in any other place in the UK. Instead of fussing, we ran home to get cash for the meal. The woman working at the restaurant was very nice and understanding. If I lived in Newbury, this would likely be my go-to for Chinese take-away.Please visit my blog for more reviews and trip reports from our England vacation.

This Chinese was once great but of now terrible! Started with spare ribs which were really good. The main was sweat and sour which tasted like vinegar, battered prawns which tasted like banana oddly (guess it’s the batter). And egg fried rice which was almost glow in the dark orange in colour. Also the man at the reception is very grumpy ! ☺️ Sorry but I won’t go back now.

I fail to understand why people think this place is amazing and give it five stars? My wife and I paid over £70 for very poor quality food, really it was just substandard takeaway food served on plates at a table, which I can do at home for a lot less money. My wife was also left with a dry cleaning bill after the waiter tipped Satay Chicken down her jacket, and then failed to apologise or offer to help in anyway to clean up the mess.
