China Chef in Stroud

Shame i can not gove this a 0. 24th of September, ordered multiple orders including for vegetarian. Got home and found this was all meat. Called, spoke to a individual who was nice and was really understanding. Said i would get free rolls next time. I let this go as had good experience before this. We all make mistakes. 12th of October i ordered multi orders. In store asked them to make sure the vegetarian order (as well as the meat was correct). Was told in store yes all fine. Got home and was wrong again. Called, this time angry and was meet by a young man who just didn't care at all. Plus i was missing food this time. Nothing but bad attitude on the phone. Really poor.

Cash only + all food doesn’t come with rice you need to buy it separately and also they don’t give you cutlery, rubbish

Overall not impressed. Ordered the ribs and they we’re really dry and fatty Chicken and pork balls were uncooked (looked like prawns) Chips were alright and so was the rice. Spring rolls on the other hand I was disgusted looks mouldy.

Seem to be back on form again (after a wobble when the new folks took over). For takeaway food, pretty good, we use then a couple of time a month.

There was one review who said that this was the best Chinese in the area, so I decided to take them up on that. My first impressions were not great unfortunately, I was unable to see if they were Mandarin or Cantonese speakers as they have employed a young boy to do their customer service. He also told me that there were no cutlery available which is a UK first for Chinese takeaways I have ate at so far. However, due to the cash driven nature of the business, he advised me where their nearest cashpoint was which was helpful considering I am not from this area. I ordered BBQ Pork Fried Rice and Salt and Pepper Chicken. I can understand why some previous reviewers have expressed that this was the best in the area. The Salt and Pepper Chicken was well made, strong in taste and has a good balance of Chinese 5 spice however… this was let down by the excessive use of MSG. There was “too much” as I was left thirsty all night. Chefs do not need to have reliance on MSG to bring out the flavours of their dish. I unfortunately have to say they use too much compared to other establishments. Other than that, this is a good tasting dish that I will still recommend. The taste is what I expect from a good Chinese. The BBQ Pork Fried Rice was not bad. This is the minimum standard I expect from Chinese takeaways. The rice was not too dry, the pork had some flavour but not enough. It could use longer marination. Ultimately, this was let down by the lack of pork quantity which might have sorted their weak char siu (BBQ pork) flavour. The rice could have been a little less dry but I think I can let them off considering the rural-ness of the area. So far I have to say that China Chef is probably the best in this Bristol and Gloucestershire area. You might be able to find some better in or around Bristol but definitely in the Rural areas; I will say this one meets the Chinese food standard I expect when I order Chinese food. Overall good shop despite my criticism.

Wonderful meal, beautifully cooked. Polite young lady on the phone and on the counter when meal collected. Excellent - would reccomend.

The lad that served us gave off a very unfriendly vibe, maybe he was having an off day, but it certainly did not feel welcoming. I asked for my Singapore rice noodles to be spicy, but it was almost inedible (vindaloo hot), I could forgive this though as it must be hard to judge someone's tolerance to heat, however based on all of the other Singapore rice noodles I've had from lots of Chinese take aways this was silly hot. Unfortunately, the curry had also been heavily spiced which we had not requested. I would visit again, but I would be sure to make it clear just how spicy I like my food.

Quality of recent meals has been poor

Excellent service and the food is well cooked, order was ready to collect when I got there.

Special fried rice, it was unusual and not very good, soggy with chewy meat. King prawn curry, watery with chewy prawns. Bland taste. Prawn toast, this was deep fried in old cooking oil, it was burnt greasy with old oil taste. Chicken balls, perfect. And the only thing I ate. Unfortunately the rest went in the bin. First and last visit sadly. Friendly staff and fast service.

Great tasting Chinese food, quick service and reasonable prices

A party of 13 of us stayed locally to celebrate my brother's 40th birthday and we wanted a takeaway. My teenage son ordered a chow mein and, because he's allergic to beansprouts we asked for them to be left out, and to use a clean pan and utensils when cooking his dish. They took our (large) order but phoned 5 minutes later to say they'd decided to refuse to serve our son because they were too busy to use a clean pan. We've eaten in countless restaurants with him around the world, including dozens of chinese takeaways in the UK and we've never been refused service. Who can't manage a clean pan and clean spoon?? (Eugh - makes me wonder about their cooking methods). He was left feeling utterly humiliated and degraded and it was so sad to watch him have to eat something different (thanks Pizza Planet Cam for an excellent pizza, made in a clean pan......) at his Uncle's birthday. The food China Chef were willing to cook for us was tasty, so they get 4 stars for that, but Zero stars for the appalling, hurtful and unkind service, hence the 2 star average. Needless to say I shall never eat there again on principle.

Love this place can be a long wait at times but it’s worth it!

We were staying in the area and this was the local takeaway, we ordered over the phone to collect. It was super popular so fairly busy, we waited about 15mins for our food order. The food was amazing, fresh and hot quality food. Would order from again if we were back in the area.

Love the food from here fresh, tasty and just around lovely food. Clean and friendly and covid safe. The only thing that would make this better is a delivery service and maybe online ordering but that's only my opinion and preference. Would highly recommend food from here.

Seem to get the order wrong every time even though we've tried again a year later, when we phone up to say they make it so difficult and have general terrible customer service. Live just down the road but would drive to Ben's in Dursley now just to not go there again. Awful.

I like Chinese food its the best place to go for a takeaway meal my favourite is chicken chow main and chicken satay skewers with prawn crackers with curry sauce

Very efficient, good food and some different dishes

It's the best Chinese in Cam & Dursley (for me 😉). I tend to normally have the same 3 dishes and have ordered those dishes from other takeaways in the area and have been massively disappointed at the portion sizes and price compared to China chef. I've tried many other dishes with them over the last few years and they are always delicious! Staff are always really friendly too!

Most of the food was great, the only low point was the shredded crispy beef which was dry and floury with hardly any sauce. The rest was lovely.

Convenient Chinese takeaway in Cam. Usual selection of dishes at a good price and good quality. They will take telephone orders to keep waiting time down.

Ordered trays and didn’t get what we ordered. Came back with significantly less food. Complained and told there’s nothing they can do and he was rushed to get back to the kitchen. Awful awful service.

Best Chinese in dursley and cam by far

Amazing Chinese! Food is always fresh and so tasty and the chicken curry is amazing.

We have been a loyal customer for several years (following them when they moved from Berkeley) and have really enjoyed their food. Our last order had an item missing and we raised it with them. Today, I return, having placed a £45 order I had the humiliation of them unpacking my order onto the counter, to ensure all was there! On asking why, we were told it was because we had reported several times that items were missing, over previous visits. In at least eight years of monthly purchases I recall only two previous times. They have lost our custom. Ps. If any customer has previously had a bonus item in their order, perhaps you could let them know!

Great tasting, affordable Chinese food. Friendly, helpful staff. Not sure about their chinese curry (personal taste). Open 6 days a week, closed Tuesdays. Perfect for Sunday night feasts.

Beef chow mein was good, not too oily and a good amount of beef. Crispy shredded beef was lovely, but unlike anything I've had before. A lot of something sweet in the batter. Unusual but good. Generally good.

Good food, friendly staff, what’s not to like? I always get the sweet n’ sour chicken balls with plain rice whenever I get Chinese takeaway. It’s super yummy from here, thick sauce, crispy but not brittle, EPIC size chicken balls. Very generous portions. I like it. 🙂

I drive purposely to this take away 8 miles from Charfield instead of my local wotton one 2 miles away from my home.. purely because the food is of better standard.. it's not running in fat and the spring rolls are amazing!
