Chilvers Fish & Chips in Tendring

I have noticed a few 'cool' reviews about Chivers fish and chips. My wife and I had take out f&c again last Friday. As on previous occasions it didn't disappoint. The fish was cooked perfectly and the batter just right. Coupled with the friendly service and reasonable prices, we will be using Chivers again.

Really disappointed. Stepped in to get a quick fish & chip dinner. It was priced well and service was good but the fish disintegrated, batter was soggy and chips very undercooked. The world's most simple meal, and this place's specialty, should not be done this poorly. Now need to put food in the oven and cook something else.

Came here from Basildon and was blown away by the value, service and lovely food. Can't fault it except we didn't like the sav but that was down to personal preference (prefer a smokier pink one). Everything else was lovely tho and can't believe some of the bad reviews are actually real. We ordered large cod and got two pieces of what would normally be large cod anyway in our local and gave us two cod roe, again because they said they were small but were the same as what we are used to. Would definitely return if we are back in the area. Fantastic value. Thanks.

Med cod was about 3/4 the size of a postcard and all the batter stuck to the paper and pulled it off. Taste was quite watery. Large chips was about 3 x the portion size of the medium chips on our last visit and they were all soggy.

The chips were a huge portion, 1 large portion was probably 3 x the medium portion we were given last time and they were all soggy, not crispy at all. Pickles and curry sauce were nice, but so disappointed by the actual fish and chips. £8 for a piece of fish that big without any batter felt like quite a rip off.

Fantastic value for money and great customer service. We've sample the fish, scampi, sausages and chips multiple times and always really enjoy our takeaway.

Glad it's reopened as it is a real fish and chip shop..traditional so use it or lose it as their fare is fresh and always quality. Very friendly couple.

The fish was really greasy, the chips were overcooked and just rank, the haddock we ordered tasted distinctly like cod and what batter was on the fish got stuck to the paper, my son couldn't eat his sausage because he said it was disgusting.

Having lived here for well over 55 years I've seen it handed down from father to son and the quality has always been maintained and very reasonable price for every one great value for money always freshly cooked I can't speak anymore highly recommended for great food it has been the corner stone of the high street and the 2nd longest business I think in this town

The menu on the wall is outdated so everything I originally wanted didn't exist anymore. The fish came with a ribcage - it was full of bones. I normally expect a bone or two but not six. It didn't have much flavour either, the batter was alright after salt and vinegar. The only good thing was the chips, they were decent. Prices were alright too.

Been here a couple of times now for some chips. Have to say it’s lovely, haven’t tried the fish yet but if it’s anything like the chips it’s a good thing

Definitely one of the worst on my travels Shame such a good location on the high street no wonder it’s never busy when I drive past , sausage wasn’t to bad but the chips awful paid £3.80 for a sausage in the end because the chips were so bad , no love in the cooking at all under cooked rubbish oil definitely ain’t got that chippy chip taste

Some of the laughable so called reviews are ridiculous, giving one star for turning up late :O)) get a grip. It's a good old fashioned honest chippy, if you want the Ritz go to the Ritz. We love it.

This is the best fish and chips around Manningtree. The owners are very polite and take an interest in thier customers when they have time to chat. But are usually very busy as people know how good thier food tastes.

They couldn't have been more accommodating when serving us as we had asked if one large cod could be separated over our 3 chip cones and they were more than happy to help. Beautiful fish and chips that we got to enjoy with a view of the Quay. Thank you very much for a lovely lunch!

Chilvers fish and chip shop is the only place we get our fish and chips from. Karen, of the husband and wife team always has time to talk while continuing to serve great quality fish and chips

I visited on the evening of Friday 21st June; two male and one female customers waiting for their orders. I waited patiently for almost 5 minutes but the middle aged woman frying was more interested in chatting to her friend than bothering to waste her time acknowledging me. Rather than take up any more of her valuable time I visited Mistley Fisheries where I was met with smiles and immediate service. I think I know where I'll be visiting next time....

I’ve never had a bad meal here and never had to wait very long for my food. The owners are kind and friendly people too. Very happy to keep coming back 😀

Can't comment on the food as I turned up at 22-15 only to find the shop shut even though it says on the Google site its open till 22-00 very disappointed

Nice fresh fish, range of pies, nuggets etc and enormous portions of lovely crunchy chips. But the best bit is the extremely friendly happy service. Always a joy to go there. In my opinion, the best fish and chip shop in the area.

Not opening as often as Riverside this maybe gets overlooked. I can't vouch for the fish but a cone of chips is reasonable and very nice here. The lady serving is always friendly and helpful and ti would be good to see more people try them and for them to keep going. Riverside, the local competition, is staffed by teenagers who could care less and their food is overpriced and not as nice. If you've bene out to look at the fireworks, on the beach, out for. walk etc. then give this a go for a lovely cone of chips.

Good food freshly cooked good price

The fish was beautiful. The chips were large and tasty. The chicken nuggets were also tender so we both ate well. The lady who served us was friendly and couldn’t have been more helpful. It was all well priced. I can’t wait to return for more excellent food and service.

Chilvers Fish & Chips are Thee Very Best money can buy. Always freshly cooked and so yummy scummy. If asked, the friendly lady and gentleman will always double cook your chips, making them super crunchy. We look forward to indulging ourselves whenever we are in the area. I very often finish them before getting home or go down to Mistley to eat them. Tonight is the night, can't wait.

Driving between Clacton and Ipswich and was starving so stopped off for some chips on a cold day. Wished I hadn’t. The chips were absolutely awful. A soggy mess/mash as the chips had not been fully cooked. They were so bad I literally ate about two of them and threw the tray in a bin nearby. Gutted as was starving. I notice that this is not the first review with undercooked chips so an easy fix - leave them in the oil for longer !! Went to the shop down the road and bought sandwich and crisps.

This venue is in something of a time-warp. Centrally located in Manningtree, but the premises have not changed for donkey's years and the hand written signs are in abundance. If you like a step back in time with no frills, this is the place for you.

Excellent quality fish and chips. Traditional staff and décor. Has the feel of being unchanged for forty years. A real treasure to be experienced! Long may it last!

This is in my opinion the best in Mannigtree/Lawford better friendly service and simple...(one in Lawford too complicated ordering system.waite ages) ..this has excellent fish.highly recommend

Went in there at 16.35, 5mins after they opened got 2 cheese burgers which were nice, but the chips were under cooked, soggy and all stuck together could of done with more time in the fryer

Grabbed 5 bags of chips for lunch for friends and they were so gritty! It's like they were covered in sand...not nice

Recently enjoyed both Chicken and Chips and Cod and Chips from 'Chilvers' in Manningtree.Perfectly cooked piece of cod in a tasty batter and delicious chunky chips. Friendly service at reasonable prices, what more can you ask for. I recommend Chilvers.

Tried this place several times. Refried burnt tasting chips. Cremated battered sausages. The WORST chippy I have ever visited and I travel around the entire British Isles and have had chips all along the way. Pretty much the worst I have ever had.

Lovely little chippy next to the pub in Mistley, run by a lovely couple with great cockney accents.Had a great banter with them about their previous lives in the East End!Really well priced, good size portions.Just watch out for their opening hours, only a few hours a day.

Chilvers had started to get a bit complacent before Riverside Fish And Chips opened nearby but they've certainly raised their game lately and are ready to give Riverside a run for their money

My family unexpectedly turned up so we decided to go and get some fish and chips and sausage and chips for the children.They only had a couple of bits of dried up looking fish and wouldn't cook anymore so we took those and some battered sausages and a load of chips that looked like they had been cooked in old dirty oil.The fish was awful and very small and the sausages were not properly cooked and still red in the middle so had to be thrown out.I ended up going round our little local shop and getting frozen oven chips and frozen fish and sausages and cooking it myself. Far more tasty. Total waste of money going to this chip shop as it all ended in the bin. Won't be going back.

surprised Chilvers is still open to be honest. Stupidly gave it another try what with Riverside and all. Was absolutely amazed that they are still cremating their battered sausages after all this time. The 'batter' is burnt (STILL after all these years. They obviously don't care about the comments about it or have a personal preference for burnt/overcooked battered sausages and are of the mistaken belief that customers like them this way - - - - THEY DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!! CHILVERS FISH AND CHIPS, PLEASE TAKE PERSONAL NOTE THAT PEOPLE ARE FED UP AND DISGUSTED WITH YOUR OVER-COOKED BATTERED FOOD!!!!!!!!! Please take a hint and shut up shop as far as your chippy goes. The fish is always fresh, hot and tasty, the chips are great. Can be very busy at peak times so don't wait til the last minute!

Thought I'd give this place the benefit of the doubt after a previous bad experience some time ago.Did'nt fancy the usual long wait in the Riverside chip shop nearby mid-day dinnertime busy packed full of customers.So drove into Manningtree & opted for the easy option at Chilvers Fish n chips.Big mistake!Shop was empty mid-day peak time which should have rung alarm bells.More fool me.Arrived home looking forward to my meal & ended up with a dried up excuse for a battered sausage & a measly portion of chips which tasted as though they had been reheated from the day before.Minging awful!Especially considering what they were charging for this rubbish.This is supposed to be a family run business established for over 50 years.One would have thought they would have least got it right after all these years.Sadly this place has seen better days.The present owners are not doing themselves any favours by running this place down with its seeming bad reputation.Far better to go to the Riverside nearby where at least you will be served decent freshly cooked Fish n chips despite the long wait.Make your own choice..

never had trouble with this place. all the bad comments are a lode of rubbish and just slagging of a good family business which has been their for 59 years. the staff have always been freindly as i have been going their for years. food always great and never had trouble.i think if u dont like it go somewhere else!!!

I try the sausage and chips here every few years in the hopes that the food might get better, but I am disappointed every time to find that they still cremate there battered sausages and the chips seem refried and chewy. The owners/staff are not friendly either. I am amazed they are still open for business!

They do good food at a good price. I especially love their cod and chips tail end, I could eat this every day.

For some reason the manager told the chap serving my husband to go steady with the chips... Perhaps they couldn't be bothered to fry a new batch?The upshot was we got a total of about 25 chips between us. And they were undercooked and greasy. Dreadful customer service, we won't be going back!

This is the best F&C in the area...well cooked and the fish flakes when you cut into it.The batter is tasty and the chips cooked just right.Excellent value for money.They now have my business...Brilliant.

i would recommend everyone avoid this establishment like the plague. Firstly the chips were over cooked not a light golden colour but getting on for a mahogany brown, the same was to be said of the fish and sausages. the sausage was devoid of anything recognizable as ever having come from an animal and the fish portion small and so over cooked it was only fit for my dog....... stay well clear as eating cardboard would be more tasty

A wonderful, traditional fish and chip shop which has been going since 1959. At £4 for a medium fish supper was great value for money. The fish was freshly cooked and the chips were cut from potatoes in the shop. Highly recommended.

I've been here many times and until Riverside opened, was content. But Riverside showed me what fish and chips can really be like, and in comparison the food at Chilvers is, sorry, greasy mush as others have said. The service is friendly and prices fair, but frankly I now pay more and tolerate Riverside's rather brusque 'McDonalds'-type customer interface to get an infinitely better and totally reliable product.

This undoubtedly must rate as being one of the worst Fish n chip shops I have ever had the misfortune to visit.Unbelievable to think that this establishment used to be the pride & joy of Manningtree having been in business for well over 50 years at the time of this review.One can see that its gone rapidly downhill in recent years with such a poor reputation selling this cheap rubbish.Dried up leftovers on the shelf probably reheated from the previous serving which can only best be described as barely edible.And using all the cheapest ingredients too,or so it seems.(as stated by the previous reviewer)The local competition have now taken over as the pride of Manningtree with some of the best Fish n chips around.Sadly,this is no longer the case with this particular establishment which is such a shame being situated in a prime location if only the present owners had taken pride in carrying on The Chilvers Fish n chip shop once proud name.Absolute rubbish!

I have eaten in most of the fish and chip shops in and around suffolk over the years and would like to point out - DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE ! It is obvious they buy the cheapest of everything to be able to survive selling this greasy slop.It really is . I do return every year when passing the shop hoping it can improve on its quality and never fails to have my award for Worst Fish and Chip Shop in suffolk.It really is not difficult to do this job right .all you need is quality spuds quality fish and good frying oil.This shop has neither ! This food is fit for the bin only !GET SOME PRIDE IN YOUR JOB - IT SURE HAS BEEN LOST OVER THE LAST 50 YEARS.

It constantly amazes me how this establishment remains in business.The previous five star rating just doesn't ring true.Sad to think that this Fish n chip shop was once the pride & joy of Manningtree having recently celebrated over 50 years in business in the town.Sadly,this place is well past its sell by date.Dried up food on the griddle which I can only assume must be the leftovers from the previous cooking & its the same even at opening times too.And the smallest large cod I have ever had the misfortune to be served up on a recent visit to this establishment.No wonder this Fish n chip shop is nearly always empty.The local competition have stolen their crown.And quite deservedly so on the basis of this poor offering.This is not good.Avoid!

I have tried this establishment 3 times in total. On every occasion the chips have been over cooked and the fish is the smallest large cod I have ever encountered. I am afraid there is much better a short walk away and they will not get my business again.

Excellent local family with brilliant food . Me and my partner visit alot along with the dog for his dinner . Recommend to anyone thats in the area
