I booked a meal on 9th February 2025 at the pub. I had been to the pub on numerous occasions and have always been impressed and so I arranged a group meal for a group of 10 friends at 1430. We arrived early and were told that the table would not be ready until the booked time. We were also told that we would not be able to order until the table was ready for us. We therefore were happy to have drinks at the bar while we waited. We sat down at the table at 1430 and ordered immediately. When the meals had not arrived at 1510 I enquired when they would be ready. I was told that the waiting time for meals was half an hour, I replied that we had been waiting for over 30 minutes. The meals finally started to arrive an hour after we had ordered with the last of them coming out well over an hour afterwards. The quality of the food was acceptable but the delay was totally unacceptable. I spoke to the Assistant Manager who referred me to the Manager as he said that he would have not booked a group of 10 in for that time. The Manager replied that the delay with our meals was due to the fact that the restaurant was busy. We remonstrated with her saying that the length of delay was totally unacceptable. There was no goodwill gesture offer such as a free dessert or drink just a very grudging apology. I have since contacted the proprietors of the pub and they have not had the courtesy to even acknowledge my message and letter. Extremely disappointing especially as I was bringing friends along who I had recommended the pub to.

Despite : Booking in advance for a group of 20 Ordering our food at 2:30pm as requested by the manager It took over 30 minutes for food to arrive When we complained at 3:10 the food was taking too long we were told" there's half an hour delay on food" Sorry. Unacceptable. No one accepted responsibility for this delay including the manager. No good giving us Hesd Offices contact details- you should have managed this situation better. What should have happened: Manager explains at 2:30 there is a delay with food and apologises Offers a free drink/dessert as a way to compensate. Based on this poor experience we won't be returning

Visited the Childe of Hale for the first time in many years for Sunday lunch. Lovely helpful staff, so friendly and welcoming, very tasty roast dinner and steak and chips, meat cooked to perfection and generous portion sizes. Finished off with gorgeous dessert and coffees, thoroughly enjoyed everything and all for a very reasonable price. We will definitely make this a regular place to visit, in such a lovely setting too. The staff are so welcoming and food is lovely, you will not be disappointed.

We have been going to the Childe of Hale for over 25 yrs. As a family we have enjoyed the hospitality, excellent food, lovely warm atmosphere, and friendliness of staff and regulars. Unfortunately on our last visit we were bitterly disappointed with all the above. The only member of staff we were greeted by and spoken to was Ian the manager, who is an excellent host. The atmosphere was lacking. We waited nearly an hour for our food which was luke warm and tasteless. We didn't recognise any regulars and felt the place had lost its sparkle. Such a shame as in the past we have travelled to especially eat here for special occasions and just for a meal out. I hope sincerely that the Childe of Hale gets its sparkle back and a new chef would help.

Didn't realise dogs were only allowed in bar and were politely asked to move and were directed to a free table in the bar. Guy who I think likely to be manager very polite and friendly. Ordered food and a drink and really enjoyed our time there chatting to other customers and friendly staff. It was my wife's birthday and it was great. Thanks for a great service.

Lovely pub . Lovely grub!. Great staff. I would like to say how grateful I am. I had 'organised' a large group walk for the lighthouse trail and decided we'd have tea at Child of Hale pub afterwards. I say organised loosely as it grew quickly from 8 to 18 people from nice idea to let's just do it next Sunday with the more the merrier attitude. I realised, even though. Id not been here before that was his was likely to be problematic as it's not a huge place, and it's popular. I called on the Friday to see if I could reserve a table for 12...hoping the other s could book for themselves. Sure enough too many to accommodate at short notice. But I secured a table for 8. The other four secured a separate table but wasn't guaranteed to be seated in same area. Then another 4 friends secured a table and the last two also secured a table. So was very very pleased we all would get a meal after our walk. The walk ended up shorter with the rain and some just stayed in the pub for a drink instead until we got back. But to our grateful delight when we did. We were told all 18 of us where seated in the same area 😁 Was so happy as the point was bringing all our friends together. And though the walk didn't come off quite as planned , we got what we truly wanted, the association together which the staff made possible. I had a lovely roast chicken dinner at such a reasonable cost. Friends all said they enjoyed their food too!! We will definitely visit again with better organisation and more notice to the pub!! 🫣😁 Thankyou. Very satisfied.

Not a Gastropub! Lovely pub in a lovely location, sit in the sun and watch the planes fly overhead approaching Liverpool John Lennon Airport. We have visited this pub as a group of girls celebrating birthdays etc on many occasions and have always been pleased with the food on offer. Our latest visit didn't live up to previous experiences here. We arrived as a group of eight, we bought drinks and browsed the menu. I noticed a not so pleasant smell and quickly realised it was the placemats, they smelt so bad that we had to take them off the table as it was quite overpowering. We all ordered and the food arrived at our table altogether which was really well done as we could all eat together. A few of us ordered fish & chips, they said that the chips were undercooked but the fish was ok. My friend and I ordered the Gammon, again the chips were undercooked, the Gammon was extremely salty and the onion rings were also undercooked. Another friend ordered the sausage & mash, when it arrived it looked lovely. My friend tried the sausage and then asked me to try it, it tasted watery and really not very nice. She had a discreet word with the waitress who said she would replace the meal. My friend again tried the sausage and then asked another friend to try it, she couldn't eat the sausage as she had no doubt that the sausages didn't taste right. She spoke to the waitress and said she would just have the fish & chips as we had all eaten by this stage. The manageress did refund the money to my friend for her meal which was appreciated. The waitress that was working that day did an amazing job, well done! Sadly after our latest experience here we doubt that we would return.

Had a lovely meal with some old friends on a Saturday lunchtime. There were probably at least 20 choices on the menu including light bites and baguettes. We had fish and chips, tuna baguette and steak baguette, all were good sized portions and very tasty. The young lady who served us was very attentive, friendly, polite and helpful and put us at ease. There was a nice calm atmosphere inside and as I was leaving, I noticed a lot of people enjoying a nice drink in the beer garden. Thankyou.

A group of 20 of us visited on a Sunday afternoon (we pre-booked) for food. The food service was superb considering that it’s a fairly small pub. They managed to get all sorts of different dishes from the menu out to us at almost the same time. The food was generally very good, fairly priced and good portions. The beef roast dinner I had was good but not brilliant. Some vegetables were very hard and some of the beef was on the tough side, perhaps having to involve a microwave at some point due to the numbers in our group. Some of the cutlery wasn’t the cleanest. It was still good though and they particularly nailed it with the gravy.

Have been frequenting this fine establishment for roughly 2 years. As a travelling contractor, pubs like this are a godsend. Friendly staff, no local local mentality, with great banter. Beers are poured with pride, and have unfortunately for the other local pubs, ruined the chance I'll go elsewhere. Food is always on point, and served with a smile, just make sure to get in before they finish serving. It's a popular destination, amazing considering its out of the way location. They've just introduced a new lotus biscuit cheesecake. And I'm concerned for my health. Its just too good. Thanks for always looking after me.

Staff were rude! Asked for a sitting of 6 for my family they said straight away no! We drove all the way to be told no! A disgrace

Had my very first food experience here tonight and was blown away! Freshest food, MASSIVE portions and just so so delicious! Pork schnitzel was the size of a full pig and fish was size of a shark! 🤣 Fantastic price for portion size! Can't wait to go back! Helped that I could take my dog too! Fab staff, super friendly 💞

I've been raving about this place. Wasn't intending to come here. It was just happenstance and now I'm dying to go back. The warm welcome, the smiling, friendly waiter, the interior and best of all, THE FOOD! Oh my God! We both had the chicken chorizo and it was by far the most enjoyable meal I've bought in such a long time. Every aspect of the meal was delicious: the home made coleslaw;the home made relish;the lettuce was so fresh; the sweet potatoe fries; the sour cream; the sweet chilli jam;the chicken and chorizo and it all came together in a glorious frenzy to tingle and delight your taste buds. A masterpiece. Okay, okay, but near enough. I nearly wept. I had the cherry bakewell blondie for dessert. I didn't think you could possibly get two equally fantastic courses but you can at this place! Another exquisite treat which, again, was homemade with such care and expertise. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful.

Lovely bakery, staff were amazing and very friendly. Staff talked about products enthusiastically when asked about them. Food was great, protein shakes are an absolute must.

Consistent. Food is simple, fresh and tasty. Atmosphere is nice. Service... Well you can drive half an hour to get here, then sit in the car waiting for a table for 45 minutes because they won't take bookings. To come here for lunch takes up 4 hours in drive time, wait time and service and it's off putting. They took our drink and food orders at the same time after we'd been sat for over 10 minutes. After the food arrived they didn't come back to the table once, until we got up to pay. We all wanted more drinks but we'd been there for so long we just wanted to go home. Whoever is the manager has got the menu right, but they really need to train their staff, for as hard working as they all are, they could be doing better.
