Chieftain in Welwyn Hatfield

So I was in town for work and as I haven’t been to the UK in over 20 years, really wanted to hit up a British pub. Mission accomplished. Proper pie and chips with a Guiness. Lovely service and just all round great. Absolutely recommend

Me and my partner walked in on Monday lunch around 2pm with 2 babies and waited at the front entrance to be seated. After standing there for a good 8-10 minutes without even an acknowledgment or a hello we decided to go and seat ourselves asking if that was what we were supposed to do as we walked past the bar. We simply got a ‘yeh sit wherever you like’. We’ve then found ourselves a table but were in need of two high chairs, having looked around and unable to find any and once again no assistance from the staff we decided to leave and go elsewhere. Of course there was no goodbye or any concern from the staff that we were clearly leaving unhappy. Safe to say we won’t be popping in there again!

Good menu of well cooked meals at value for money prices, two meals for the price of one offers and with friendly and attentive staff. Popular with locals and can get very busy. I love it again the the chieftain there is lovely stuff and food I recommend the scampi chips and garden peas

I was at the Chifton Welwyn (our local pub) for late night food for two and gave £50 for £49.98 meals for both, (two £20 notes and 1 £10 note) I gave and paid £10 online, I was told this as my partner gave me the £50 and I gave a woman called Katie the money from being given this money, it seems to me that she pocket the £10 so overall I’m not happy.

6 of us visited here on two occasions whilst on holiday in the area, once for lunch & once for an evening meal. Both times we had great service & great food, there’s an extensive menu so something for everyone. Only reason I haven’t given it 5 stars is because the music in the evening was so loud, it was very difficult to have a conversation. Lunchtime was totally different, soft music playing & a calm atmosphere, much better for us (we’re all oldies). Would most definitely visit here again for a lunch if in the area.

Impromptu visit, table of 6, orders taken, barman was most helpful checking availability with kitchen (Sunday roasts), and making sure they would cook a Mixed Grill. Food came out all together, all very good.

All good here & nothing to complain about 10 out 10.

As my local pub, and, as per Google Analytics, with over 145 visits since 2017, I can vouch for this pub. I bring friends and family eveytime they visit, and I go everytime my partner visits too. It seems that the place is favoured by families. The staff consistently go above and beyond to be helpful and friendly, now knows me by name, which is lovely, and management outdone themselves with the new decor. Beautiful fabrics and creative and fun pictures and paintings. 4 large screens for those who want to follow sport/news. I love the new variety of chairs too. i also find that the lighting is now spot on *was dark in places previously) which give a lovely glow to the place. The ladies bathroom has also been redecorated with fun wallpaper and imagery. The food has been consistently good and affordable. A good selection of pub choices, nicely prepared, highlight on our favourites with the chicken burger, chicken tikka the trays of snacks, very practical (and delicious) when in groups or playing darts. Other dishes have also been great and the fish and chips served to the table next to us last weekend looked amazing. The garden area has also been refurbished and the solid cover has already been appreciated in the summer and will be this winter too. Additional tables and chairs means that more peolple can enjoy the outside area. Drinks wise, I love the newly added selection of cocktails and the tequila sunrise goes down a treat (although would recommend you do get a ice crusher for certain cocktails). My boyfriend, who's a beer fan said that the lager is top quality, however, progress could be made on the Guinness. (He's Irish, so hard to please, but he still orders it lol). There is also regular entertainment, such as quiz nights, karaoke and music. Personally. I avoid those evenings as the sound is very loud and i prefer the quieter evenings (im getting old), but they are extremely popular considering the crowd there, and many appreciate these and the atmosphere is one of happy and fun times. I've been wanting to write this review for a while, and I'm glad I finally done it. See you soon guys, thanks for the good times. Carry on the good work 👏

Just returned from a visit for the first time for a Sunday roast to celebrate my nieces birthday and we weren't dissapointed! Superb roast dinner options 3 of our party chose the beef, 2 the chicken roast and 1 from main menu. In addition to the well cooked meat, the plate was well presented with the most amazing home made Yorkshire pudding which was massive and perfectly cooked. We opted for the 4 additional sides to share of cauliflower cheese-delicious, pigs in Blankets and extra toasties. We all thoroughly enjoyed the food. Lovely new re furnished decor and friendly helpful polite attentive staff. Highly recommend

Meals were excellent for me , and 2 more adults and granddaughters child meal.👍👍👍. Meals were very well presented and staff were polite and no pressure on on us. 👏👏👏👏.

Was bride the football only went in for a tea and coffee staff were really friendly, helpful. No issues, did not try the food there so unable to comment

After a day on the trains visiting my Mum, I decided to pop into my local pub for meal and glass of wine. Such a pleasant atmosphere in the pub, which helps when you’re on your own, the bar staff help to create the atmosphere as they are genuinely friendly and helpful. I decided to try the beef burger with emmental cheese and bacon, I have to say it was the tastiest burger I’ve had in a long time with chips, I don’t normally have burgers as they tend to disappoint, but I would highly recommend a burger at The Chieftain

I'm not a vegetarian but a must try is the Panko burger which was amazing. Really impressed with the refurbishment of the pub. Staff were lovely and the food was delicious. Thank you to all the staff

Booked a table, on arrival table was still in use, but they will going shortly, ordered drinks and eventually said which table we're on. Went to bar approximately ten minutes later and ordered food, nothing was mentioned about how long the wait would be, time ticked by and after an hour waiting went and asked how much longer the wait would be, was told they're just plating it up, another ten minutes it arrived after one hour twenty minutes of waiting. On looking at what two of us recieved, neither thought it was worth it, one was bangers and mash the other was chilli,both served up in what looked like cereal bowls, perhaps it would have been better putting corn flakes in them rather than what was in them, might have got the food a lot quicker, doubt it.,Then there's the price for a large glass of wine, totally outrageous, you could have bought a desent bottle in the supermarket for that price. Won't be returning any time soon, with prices like that and waiting for food for over an hour, think it'll be a wide berth

Poor customer service. I went to the Chieftain on a workday and ordered a tea. The lady serving put the money in my hand so that the coins dropped out of my hand. I'd ordered a tea and the cup was dirty, with big brown marks in the cup. I'd asked for a clean cup, and the lady gave me another cup, which was also dirty, with brown marks on it (not as bad as the first cup, but still - as if someone had drank from it a few hours earlier). I noticed when I returned to my table. I decided not to make a fuss about it, as I was only in there to do some laptop work (I ordered a beverage, mainly so I would not use their resources for free). I also realised that the teapot was dirty. In the end, I didn't drink the tea because of the dirty cups and teapot. Overall, there was poor service and a negative atmosphere. The server subtly made me feel like I wasn't welcome there; I suggest making a bit more effort so that customers want to come back and spend money. Even if they don't return, at least they'll have a positive experience that they can share with others.

food took an age to come out but was nice when it arrived, locals looked a bit rough round the edges but it was a pub afterall. Waitress was very friendly and apologised for the wait offering free drinks,

I had the bacon burger and the patty was so dry a steak knife struggled to cut it. My mate had gammon that was ok. The burgers deffinetly need a rethink. Its s nice pub just bad burger pattys

Not bad. Always busy the only disappointment it's a McMullens Update. Although food wasn't the best on the area the advantage coming here was the 2 for 1. However this has been greatly reduced in new menu so the attraction is not there anymore. Pity. Pub definitely improved incl the food recommended

Really disappointed, normally really enjoy the food at the chieftain however this time left highly unsatisfied. The menu has been reduced leaving only the basic of options and then food it's self lacks flavour and is like a chore to eat. The staff were lovely, but there wasn't a table check in until we had nearly finished our meal.

3 of uf popped in for a lunchtime meal. Relatively busy for a Wednesday, but service was good and didn't have to wait long. Good choice of meals and very reasonable prices and staff very helpful as well being polite. Good place for parties/ birthdays booked prior.

Amazing place with great prices and better service. Honestly, this is going on my best places to eat, locally. Every time I went to the bar, I was served efficiently. The food all came out perfectly, although we had a bug party, the restaurant coped extremely well. Hats off to the team.

Fewer 241 deals but still great value for money.

15 of us booked Xmas dinner at 7pm. At 8:15 the starters came but I wasn't having one so waited for the main course, Still waiting at 9:15. Hungry so went home and cooked a meal. I heard that they got the main course at 09:50, nearly 3 hours after our booking. People who came in after our party were being served before us. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say they bit off more than they could chew with Xmas dinners, but I never got to chew anything.

Decent pub. Busy with lots of people eating. We did not eat but was nice enough and would definately go back.

Turkey dinner had inedible pigs in blankets and stuffing balls. Fish was greasy and mainly batter. Other visits have been ok.

Visited 05/12: the food wasn’t great, I had chicken pie and the pastry was dry. The chips seemed old. The dessert was nice, I had Oreo waffles. I didn’t use the disabled toilets so cannot comment on them. There could be more disabled spaces but I found one when I visited. The staff were pleasant.

Had a work Christmas dinner party last night. The food was fantastic, everyone was happy. Service was amazing. Well done. To seve 22 people not easy. Well done to the kitchens staff & chefs. We look forward to coming back

I love coming to the Chieftain regularly with my other half over the years, we’re actually the first couple to have got engaged inside the pub. My partner loves the mixed grill and I love the burgers, especially the beetroot. The advice I would give is book early, especially during busy periods the pub fills up quickly, the staff are really friendly and the food is brilliant. We’re really excited about having our Christmas dinners here.

Came here for a pint of boot warmer absolutely fantastic food is amazing the dessert I really recommend the waffles looking forward to coming back

Had the Christmas lunch must say the starter was fine the main was very disappointing Turkey cooked with garlic 🤢asked for more gravy asked 4 people before getting some , veg cold on arrival . Pudding okay . Left feeling very disappointed.

To be honest, I gave most of the five points because there is a wooden leg in the window. I love the idea that someone came in, got so drunk that they forgot that they had come in with a wooden leg and just hopped home – leaving the landlord to display it in the window like something out of Bagpuss. This may not be what actually happened, I just wish it was. I would probably have given two or three stars for my actual experience. The car park was too small and completely full. We were able to park in the nearby streets but it felt unwise. We were there in the daytime and still the room was dark and loud. The food was slow and my mixed grill was one of the very worst that I have ever had. I am something of a mixed grill connoisseur, so that really is saying something. It might have been better if they had brought it out when they first made it, rather than deciding to give it that desert sun exposure vibe as I waited hungrily. My wings starter was alright and I didn't fancy any of the puddings. The service was slow and the messaging confused. It might be worth going when it is even quieter than a Sunday afternoon.

Excellent Sunday roast today. Great value for money. This is a busy pub/restaurant which is a clear indication of how good this place is. Friendly and helpful staff as always. Thoroughly recommended. 👍

A family get together is difficult when there are 13 of you and an age range of 80 down to 4 years old. The staff were so friendly, venue is lovely and the food and service were great.

Saw it on Google and decided to try it, wanted to order a beef burger but unfortunately they have ran out, so I ordered the Chicken burger instead as one of the recommendations from the bar staff, it was surprisingly good. The fries with it were also good. I wish the alcohol was slightly cheaper, but I do understand its a pub, the staff were really nice and friendly as well. Will come back in the future to get the beef burger when it's less busy.

We came to the Chieftan pub today and had lasagne, cod and scampi and chips. All the food was delicious, was presented well and we were served by a really friendly lady. Will definitely be returning, we had a lovely time, thank you.

Very poor service, on food, waited about 50min, for food, when it come out 1 order was wrong, waited 20 minutes for a burger that should have been on plate in first place.

Dropped in for a few beers and we were very well looked after, me the wife and daughter, oh and the dog Bert, fantastic staff and a great place.

As a family we have used the Chieftain as out local restaurant for many years, 17 of us booked in today for my birthday. I am a vegetarian so I chose the nut and sweet potatoe roast dinner, it was very disappointing. The worst roast dinner I have had in a long time. The potatoes were so hard I couldn't eat them, the nut roast was sloppy and didn't taste good. We have decided not to use the restaurant again.

We have just visited The Chieftain, for Sunday lunch, roast was fantastic, staff happy and attentive, the pub was buzzing, I’m not usually a fan of karaoke but tonight it’s added atmosphere and I’m just gutted it’s a school/work night and we had to leave. Well done everyone we will be back to try more on the new menu.

I have eaten here in the week many times and although the food menu is very basic it was always ok and good value. I took my family for lunch last Sunday but was very disappointed. The roast was poor! I cook for a living and know when corners are cut. The veg was frozen, watery and not very warm, the potatoes again were frozen and cooked very badly, my mum couldn’t even eat hers. Instant gravy! Yorkshire was so hard it was inedible. So so disappointing as I really like this pub but it def has dropped standards from a few months ago. Come on Chieftain, get your act together!

Their such a friendly team and this helps cause a lovely atmosphere for where I like to eat and drink at the local. We’re planning our Christmas dinners in there this year using the table we used where we got engaged. Emily served us today, she was a lovely waitress and there are others who I’m yet to name, overall though a lovely place.

Came here for a pint and had the guest ale on tap not had that one before and it was lovely looking forward to coming back to try the food

Huge modern pub in WGC, a town which is a bit of a beer desert. At least the Chieftain has a couple of casks on and the AK Mild was ok.
