Cheung Won in Harrogate

This was a delivery order. I've been using Cheung Won for years and recommended it to many people however their standards have fallen lately and delivery can be very slow. My order was through a delivery app which showed a delivery time of 45-60 minutes until I confirmed the order when it suddenly jumped to 1.5 hours. After querying where it was it eventually arrived over 2 hours after the order was placed. And the food just wasn't nice... it went straight in the bin. I requested a refund and they gave me £3 back! If I'd been in a restaurant I'd have sent the meal back and not paid at all. Sorry Cheung Won but this was the final straw for me in your deteriorating standards.

Food very good. You order off the menu and everything is freshly made, if you want more dishes, you just order, very good if you have a big appetite! Set price at £18.95. On Friday and Saturday, a little cheaper the other nights. Not many tables and it was very busy when we visited so book in advance if you can. Decor very basic but clean.

We both finish work late and was no place taking bookings but luckily the server at 9:45pm greet us with a nice smile and told us that we could still be served! The staff is super friendly and professional, super cheap to eat and the food is absolutely tasty.

All in all a good experience. Service was very good and quick despite them being very busy. The food is cooked to order and all came out piping hot. Good value for money and would return.

What a letdown.!Went here to celebrate for my birthday with family (4 adults) The place was nearly empty when we arrived at about 6pm very few tables take. We ordered our starters which came very promptly and the were really nice. We sat and waited and waited for the waitress to come and take our main course orders and in the end had to go and ask them to come to our table to take the food orders. By then it had become a bit more busy as more people had arrived. Some of the food main food. orders gradually came it bit by bit but albeit very slowly. 3 in our party received their orders but myself did not receive anything until the others had finished. Right at the end of the meal when I had finished mine they actually brought a noodle dish that I had ordered but given up on. I did notice that other people who had sat down much later than us were receiving their orders long before we had any sign of ours. I must say though what we had was really nice but the service is absolutely shocking which spoilt our evening of a birthday celebration.

Saw a few Szechuan dishes on the menu and decided to come in for dinner whilst working in Harrogate, sadly this was about as English as ‘Chinese’ food gets (maybe that’s the point) the szechuan recipes contain nearly no spice, definitely no szechuan peppercorns and an entirely unauthentic preparation. Crispy chilli beef was so crispy it shattered and contain more syrup than chilli. Food took a very very long time to come considering I was a solo guest. Spring rolls were plenty good enough and 3.35 for a Chinese lager was more than fair. If you are looking for a bland syrupy sweet dinner then get stuck in but personally 18.95 for this was not what I wanted.

Not the place for a light bite!!! We just wanted something small as we had already had a substantial lunch that day. We were fooled by the menu pricing. The only were for a 2 course or 3 course all-you-can eat buffet at around £14.00 and £16.00 respectively. There was also a list of starters, main courses and deserts with no prices. There was no help-yourself buffet available that night anyway. We ordered ONE mixed starter to share and 2 glasses of wine. The waitress looked a little concerned when we said we did not want a second course and when the bill came we realised why! Even though we had only eaten ONE starter we were charged about £28.00 for the food!! That is for TWO 2-course buffets!! I did query this and the waitress insisted that was correct. I was too tired at that point to argue the point but I am left feeling cheated!! I must say though, to be fair, that the food was very good and if you did have an all-you-can-eat buffet it would be good value for money. But for a light bite, stay well clear!!!

Ordered online. Waited nearly 2 hours and no food so rang them to be told the food was still being prepared and they were struggling to keep up with demand. Cancelled order as diabetic person in our party needed to eat and we couldn’t wait any longer. We explained this on the phone. They told us to go through just eat for refund. Them proceeded to send food out with delivery driver anyway 25 minutes after it was cancelled. We declined the delivery but just eat won’t refund as food is marked as delivered. Abysmal service and behaviour from both the restaurant and Just eat. Don’t recommend at all.

Great food, great value, scorching hot. Went on a Monday night but was very busy. Initially put off by the idea of a set price buffet but learned it was cooked to order! It meant it was rather slow but boy was it worth the wait! It’s a pretty basic looking restaurant but the best value and quality Chinese meal we have had for years!

Friendly cantonese speaking staff. All you can eat but order those you want. So the food will be hot and freshly made. I will recommend the soup. Both the corn soup and sour spicy soup are good. You will not be disappointed with the Prawn toast and crispy beef.

Food tasted amazing. Wine 🍷 a large glass £7. Fabulous Thoroughly recommend. All four of us were amazed at the price. £18. Bargain

Smashing friendly, relaxed atmosphere. The staff are so polite, friendly and attentive. The food is classed as a buffet, but they bring the delicious food to you. You can order as many starters and dishes as you like and the staff were so obliging. Great night out with friends

My husband and I were going to the theatre in Harrogate last night and couldn’t decide wether to eat before or after the show. We found Cheung Won after reading the good reviews. On their door it said they were open until 11pm so as the show finished at 9.15 we had lots of time to enjoy a Chinese meal. When we arrived at 9.25 we were greeted by a lady telling us they closed at 10pm and only did takeout after that! As it was only 9.25 we thought that was very bad business when it clearly stated 11pm! We were staying in a hotel that, understandably, didn’t allow takeouts to be eaten in the room. We never got to try the food and won’t even bother to try if we visit Harrogate again! There isn’t an option to put N/A on food or value so had to choose one star!

Great little Chinese buffet restaurant, you order. But can eat as much as you like. Great staff and good food, good choice for veggie as well. Only small and access is by few steps but worth the visit. Food served fresh and hot No complaints

Pleased we came.This Chinese was recommended by a local and we were pleased we came. The ‘all you can eat’ from the menu offer was great value and we preferred this to an open buffet. Staff were charming. All food was cooked fresh to order. Great dishes. Our only critique/suggestion would be to make the lights less bright and harsh, just a personal thing.

Looked good from outside but that’s where it ended. Seemed a strange atmosphere when we walked in. First they could not find our reservation and were quite rude until they found it. Then sat at an unprepared table. Right off the bat we noticed 3 separate tables complaining to the staff about the service and food, hence the strange atmosphere, this set the mood. First course took 45 minutes to arrive and another 30 mins for the main course to arrive. Main meal was missing the rice and chips, so more waiting. Food was bland and not worth the money. I actually paid the bill before the desert came out which we left along with our drinks. Could not get out quick enough. It was the only negative to what was a very enjoyable 2 day break in Harrogate. There’s no way I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.

We visited on a Thursday after a visit to sites in Harrogate about 6pm We dropped in off spec as we had our dog in the car and could park outside and keep an eye on her as a cool evening - some steps up to the place 6/7. Restaurant was offering table service buffet style - this I always find better as fresh and cooked to order. The food came at a good rate and was superb. Selection of starters as 4 of us (2 adults 2 children) The prawn toast was especially good. Mains we had Lemon chicken, Spicy Beef, Szechuan chicken, to name but a few ALL were hot and superbly freshly cooked and very well presented. The service was good - ok we had to ask again for a couple of drinks but they filled up with other guests and the they were under pressure. They were always polite and helpful.Restaurant was clean and simple inside admittedly not very atmospheric but I always say its the people your with not were you are that matter. Was the food fantastic = Yes, then great as your not staying over just there to eat and drink. Food and drinks prices were very fair indeed and after reading some of the comments on this platform I am surprised and feel a tad harsh. Drinks prices were not high as some have stated and ok the food is not McDonald speed. hence why its tastes so good, Maybe the poor comments are from die hard McDonald and KFC gang and never eat quality food ???. Would 100% recommend and we would certainly return.

Came in here on the off chance and we’re pleasantly surprised. Excellent choice of food at a very reasonable price- the service may be on the slow side but all the food is freshly cooked and beautifully presented-no chicken ding here!!! Well worth a visit!!!

Not worth going now. Went in the place dead. Starters fine but barely any mains and nearly all chicken! Drinks were overpriced and blatantly poured from big bottles!! For the price we paid real let down will stick to imperial two pound more for a menu three times as big and better service. Says it all really Saturday night we had not booked and in two hours four other people in. Shame used to be great

Excellent value meal with very good service. We arrived having found most other restaurants fully booked. Due to Covid the restaurant is not offering a buffet meal but a menu with as much as you can eat. We had three courses for £15.95 on a Friday evening! We would wholeheartedly recommend this restaurant.

My friend and I have been coming here for years, so you can imagine how happy we were when it reopened. We came a few weeks ago and the food was fantastic with excellent service. We booked and came again tonight. Horrendous ! The service was terrible we waited 45 minutes for our soup and starters. The main course didn’t fare any better coming out in dribs and drabs and one item never even materialised. After talking to the waitress she said the chef was busy cooking delivery orders. Surely people in the restaurant should take priority ? Some of the food once it did arrive was dry and unappetising. As for Covid measures ? It beggars belief that I watched the waitress clean tables, clearing glasses away by putting her fingers in the glass and then bringing us our food really ? ? Disgusting. Come on basic health/hygiene ! As I told the waitress we won’t be back any time soon. Come here at your peril, you have been warned !

During a short stay in Ripon we decided to visit this restaurant in Harrogate. Lots of variety. Nothing too much trouble for the very peasant and polite staff. Staff all wearing masks, venue was spotless. Track and trace used etc. Made us feel safe and welcome. All food was delicious and really hot. Will definitely be visiting here again. There were only two of us but it would be great for larger groups.

Food are not ready at all in a Buffett . As the virus is everywhere . The waiter just use his hand (without a gloves) to touch my food . I complained but they just say sorry and I think health and safety no good . Sorry I am from India no too good English

Faster than some fast food. All you can eat buffet for 13.99. The starters are all on hot plates when you arrive so help yourself. Good selection although the crispy beef is worth avoiding. Then you order your main or mains- good service, tasty food. Well worth popping in for a reasonable quick meal in town.

Three of us went here on Thursday before going to the theatre. It is a buffet restaurant with a difference. The starters are help yourself buffet style as is the sweet choice. The main courses are ordered from the menu but you can have as many as you like. As the portions are quite large, I would suggest that two should suffice per person. The choice of starters and soups is varied and superb. They are also replenished regularly. At £13.95 per person this is a great place for a pre theatre meal and fantastic value. Really good and friendly service too. Highly recommended.

Good choice for a quick meal. Help yourself to a range of starters (including duck pancakes in the evenings) and then order main courses from the menu. This means you can get through the meal quickly if you’re in a hurry as we were. But there is no pressure to finish quickly. Food was good quality but not the best in Harrogate. But it was good enough that we will return. Service good and friendly. Prices average for Harrogate.

we were a party of children and adults, the staff were very kind and efficient and had no trouble in accommodating our various wishes, the food was very good with as much as you could ever want to eat. For such good food, good atmosphere, central location I think the prices represent excellent value.

Visited tonight with my husband and two sons. Food was delicious especially the squid with sweet basil and tomatoes. Lovely, friendly staff and good value for money. Starters and duck/pancakes out on the hot plate with a varied menu to choose from. £14.99 PP on Friday and Saturday and you can order as many dishes as you wish. One of my favourite restaurants and well worth a visit.

This is a buffet with a difference, but a good one. Starters are help yourself, very fresh and a good variety. Main dishes are ordered from the extensive menu and were all excellent. We enjoyed our meal and would happily recommend. Good for quality and price.

This place used to be great value. Unfortunately while most of the food is still great, they have increased prices, my Cobra beer was warm, they no longer do a full buffet and some of the starter buffet was almost cold. A shame as it was such a great place for years.

There was 12 of us going for a meal to celebrate my Stag Do and, whilst I have been before, I haven't been since the Menu was changed to ordering from the table, with jew menu items.The service was fantastic, helping our Celiac friend choose his dishes with a smile and he was very happy with the variety of dishes he could have.We all enjoyed the food. It was flavourful, varied and plentiful and we had a very enjoyable night over all. Highly recommend.

Seen this place a few times and wanted to try. Anyway's all you can eat starters (limited but fresh and beautiful, prawns were lovely in tempura batter) then they cook your main to order, wish we had room to try 3 mains as what we had the duck and crispy beef were lovely, well worth the visit and the money we will be back when we are next up and an empty belly as trying the curry next

I am original korean so I eat Chinese since I was young. The food this restaurant cook is unreasonable full of oil. For examole the Chow mein is horrible stick with oil. Who other Chinese restaurant in Harrogate never got this problem. I did complaint to the lady (she claim she is the manager) she just smile and say this is the kitchen problem. What a shame. But it's a all you can eat buffert. If you are someone who don't care about quality, have a go.

We were not sure what to expect, but always try places when folk of that area (Chinese) are eating there. Not disappointed. Buffet with menu as well. Menu could be adjusted to my fussy needs. Good portions, great taste, lovely service and wonderful value

This is the best way to do a buffet help yourself to starters then pick as many main courses etc off menu the food is always brilliant staff are nice the beef dishes were to die for you could have cut the beef with a plastic knife we go regualar do not believe bad reviews it is spot on and i go to a lot of chinese restaurants,

Came here on the off chance. Not anything spectacular on the outside. However the food inside was great! There is a buffet of starters and then a menu to order off. All the food we tried was great, freshly cooked and arrived quickly. The staff were friendly and took time to chat when not busy. The chicken in sweet chill sauce was great and the Banana fritters to die for. We liked it so much we came back the next week!

When my husband and I visited the restaurant we took our baby. There was no access for the pram so we had to lift it up the stairs. There was no one at the door to seat us.

The food are disgusting (my daughter took some fried rice and it wasn’t cooked well) the Chinese lady told me it’s okay to eat . This is totally not acceptable

I saw they use no gloves to prepare the meat in the kitchen ( which is just next to the bar table) . Food are okay but drink are over price health and safety is a big problem for them .

My daughter and her husband had been to this restaurant while they were on their honeymoon in 2015. So when the 4 of us (my husband and me) visited Harrogate on Saturday they took us their. You pick your starters then they give you a menu to pick off for your main. We decided to order 4 different meals so we could have a bit of each. We also ordered noddles and rice. All of the meal was very nice the food was hot. After the mains once again choose your afters. Their was 2 different ice creams, cheesecake and jelly. The cost per head is £11.99 a head. Plus your drinks on top. We all said we had enjoyed the meal. Two girl staff members very polite.

Lovely meal, good choices on the starter counter, chicken and sweet corn soup the best I’ve ever tried, yummy main meals and super quick, not much choice in desserts but was to full by then anyway

Decided to re try not told it was now buffet but main meals served to you not much starter s or dessert s drinks high and for a buffet when main came huge portion so you would only order one thing and be full not really a buffet and prices high for children disappointed for mother’s day

Had a lovely all you can eat buffet last night.I'd read some of the reviews & was a bit apprehensive what was going to be on offer. But we were pleasantly surprised with the service & food .it may not be a very large selection ,but everything was kept hot & constantly topped up . There is certainly enough choice of varied Chicken, beef & prawns dishes , with a choice of starters including duck pancakes , soups , spare ribs & much more. The buffet also includes a sweet of either cheese cake , fresh fruit & ice cream.

Popped in on new years eve 6 o'clock ish without a booking and we were greeted by smiling faces. We duly picked our table by the window. The waitress told us what was available and took our drink order... Which wasn't too badly priced. We paid more for the same round in a local bar... Soup could have been hotter but not so much that we complained. Duck pancakes were superb, couldn't fault them. There were plenty of starters and all the tureens were full. The tureens were small but they were continuously filled up. No problems with our mains but dessert not to my liking, ice-cream or you could order fritters I believe.. Staff were lovely and friendly and despite another reviewers remarks about the music we actually loved it. Small and unpretentious establishment. We would recommend and definitely pop in again if ever in Harrogate.

Had buffet 13.99 lots of choice including crispy duck pancake to start lots of main course choices and ice cream or cheesecake or jelly for dessert . I had a magners which was 4.50 a bottle . Food was piping hot staff friendly couldn’t fault the place

TITLE SAYS IT ALL,,,,, go at your own risk,, it is awful,, nothing but Luke warm bits left on arrival, in the smallest buffet i have ever seen , filled up with bits out of back on entering , left with a mixture of Hot / cold dishes / Luke warm , in my opinion dangerous , even the wife who loves Chinese said it was the worst ever.

Thought we d give this place another go as was told it had changed owner ship prices to high for children barely any buffet ready opens at five but mains not out till 5-45 due to buffet starters ready we finished at six and chicken curry and a few others still weren't out. Starters are good and waitresses were good but dissapoimtrd mains and lack of pudding choice

We already knew that there would be a good choice of unlimited food , to which we could help ourselves, and there it was freshly cooked, and pointed out by friendly staff. Chinese food, but tailored to the European taste, nothing too exotic, and all delicious. Pity the music wasn't Chinese as this would have added to the atmosphere, but it wasn't too obtrusive which is a good point. To have awarded a very good rating would really have required something a bit more out of the ordinary, but for a good simple reasonably priced evening out, it's Ok

We were in a hurry. Told the waiter who said no problem ... we were eating in no time! Great food, freshly cooked. We really couldn’t eat all that was presented.

After a break of three months we returned to Cheung Won. The interior was the same; slightly cramped table arrangement, much too strong springs on the swing-doors in the corridor leading to the toilets and an unnecessary small step near the toilet entrance which poses a trip hazard. However, the food was excellent with each item perfectly prepared.

Visited Harrogate with my Mother and sister. My mother lives Chinese buffets. This was the only one the hotel receptionist knew about when we got there shown to table and ask what drinks we wanted. Went up for food at the was a decent amount of staters to choose from. But the main course choices were very limited. The was chicken curry, chicken in black bean sauce, beef in black bean sauce rice and 2 different types of noodles. It got worse when it came to desserts. They was a choice of ice cream chopped apples, toffee cheesecake and chocolate cheesecake. The pieces of cheesecake were a tiny little piece the size of approx 2cm by 1cm And to make things worse their was one piece of toffee cheesecake and 2 pieces of chocolate cheesecake left. I asked if they had anymore and the waitress said no. This place was disappointing to say the least. All you can eat is not the right name for it. As they wasn’t much food to eat and definitely wasn’t worth £12.99 each for the food. We all left feeling hungry

As a great lover of Chinese buffets I have visited several different restaurants in West, East, North and South Yorkshire, Lanzarote, Manchester, London etc. I have NEVER eaten better food than what is on offer at Cheung Won.

This was my annual trip to eat here. LOVELY! You know exactly what it is going to be like and they don’t disappoint. The aromatic was really good. The soups fresh. The prawn crackers not oily.

We have been going here for years, have seen the establishment change hands a few times but the food quality never falters. Staff are always friendly and offer excellent service, collecting dirty dishes from your table quickly. The food is of good standard and has always been warm regardless of the time we have dined. They replenish food quickly and have always got a good selection available. Banana fritters are available at no extra cost, you just need to order them when required. We have always enjoyed our meal when we have gone and will continue to go for many years to come.

Visited here this evening with my partner. Excellent food, very tasty, friendly staff who offered to order hot deserts for us. Best Chinese buffet we’ve been to. Would give 5 stars but the hot plate/serving area is quite small and not clear which way to go round..which means there’s no order and people were cutting in and bumping into each other. Minor niggle really and would put up with it to go back and eat there as the food was lovely!!

Stayed in Harrogate for couple of nights, couldn’t decide what to eat as we had already had Italian night before and happend to walk pass this place on way back from shopping, was a really good find good amount of choice and could go back for more as all you could eat tried pretty much everything between me and the missus and couldn’t fault anything only little let down was not much ice cream left but there was cake aswell so will defo visit again

Went to the all you can buffet on a cold Sunday night,but it was warm and welcoming in here,the food was excellent and plenty of choice,the sweet selection was a bit sparse, but all in all a good value meal.

I went as just passing last weekend and the place was really nice the choice of buffet is varied and the quality is remarkably good and the duck pancakes were worth a mention.

I have eaten here many many times for pre-theatre meals and have always been more than satisfied. However, ate here with my son last night prior to attending Harrogate Theatre pantomime & was left disappointed on this occasion with both food & customer service!

Choice of a couple of banquet places and chose here as already made and in hot plates so can have spoons of different stuff , always loved here but haven’t been for ages and was dissapointed ,food looked fresh but was all so bland and samey in the hot dish sections ,the ribs were tasty but the hot and sour soup was tasteless ,it’s great they have duck on so at least you can just eat duck pancakes ,sadly not for any of us this time .

Have been going here for many years and the food and value is excellent. Quality is good - somewhat disappointing that the sushi has disappeared but otherwise as good as ever!

We visited on a Sunday evening and it was pretty busy. There is a very varied selection of buffet food and it's eat as much as you like, but customers are asked not to waste food which seems reasonable.

I returned to eat at Cheung Won after a break of a few weeks. The food was excellent in taste, texture and presentation. I will definitely be going there again, very soon.

I previously used to heap praise on what I once thought was 'the' best Chinese buffet in Harrogate - not any more. Visited today and the majority of the chicken was only just cooked - am still slightly worried as just wasn't right! Registered my concerns with the Chinese lady working there but deducted nothing off our bill and my wife, son & I left vowing never to return. Sad day really as it was always such a treat. Shame they've let their once high standards slip. The previous Chinese lady who ran it a few years back was a million times better and SO much more friendly. Staff lacking any real enthusiasm or friendliness - not good!

This buffet style restaurant keeps providing tasty, well-cooked food. This nights meal was probably the best. An important factor in this was perhaps finding a very good taste balance in the items chosen for my meal.

Excellent food and fantastic service. will definitely come again when visiting harrogate. £32.68 for buffet pint of coke and a pint of larger for two can't fault at all.

Some friends who were visiting us and staying in the Majestic in Harrogate booked this restaurant. Even though we eat out in Harrogate regularly we had never been in Cheung Won. It is a Chinese buffet and, as has been noted in some other reviews, is quite small for this type of dining but there were still plenty of tables with room to move between them which is sometimes a problem with the bigger buffets. The main hot plate is quite small so if it is busy there can be a small wait to get plated up. The serving dishes are also small but that is a bonus in my book as it means the food is not hanging around for long before it is replenished. A good range of starters, mains and desserts. I can't see why some reviewers are saying that the selection is poor, there was ample choices on the night that we visited and it was topped up regularly. I would suggest that those that are complaining about the selection on offer either didn't ask or are expecting Gold service at Bronze prices. Don't be put off by some of the more negative reviews on here until you have given it a go, small is sometimes better.

Went with my son for his first time at a chinese restaurant. Previously he had just had unadventurous takeaway choices. The buffet allowed us to try a bit of everything - soups, loads of different starters, duck pancakes, rice, noodles, and a good variety of main courses. And finished with ice cream. The chicken curry was particularly tasty. Thank you to the 2 ladies serving drinks etc they were ever so helpful.

This is the smallest buffet I've ever been to the restaurant is a good size, the choice of food is very limited most of the dishes are chicken only a couple are not. The dessert presentation is not good ice cream in a very small fridge mixed together together or half empty or you could have fried banana or pineapple. The food is always hot as it has to be replenished quickly. Staff very friendly and quick at clearing empty plates from your table.

Another Saturday evening at Cheung Won: Excellent food; each hot item perfectly cooked. Very tasty combinations. Very satisfying meal. Perhaps could benefit from a better selection of desserts but still very good value.

On Monday 26 June 2017 we visited the Cheung Won Chinese restaurant in Harrogate for our tea.This place is outstandingly clean, the floors tables, are immaculate. Wow the food. Coming from Manchester and visited tons of Chinese restaurants all over China town. The food at Cheung Won is the nicest and tenderest Chinese food we have ever tasted. The staff were very friendly and helpful and always had a smile for us. For £11.95 each is money well spent. We will definitely be visiting This unbelievable fantastic Chinese restaurant on our return trip to Harrogate in Aug 2017. Keep up the excellent work Cheung Won.

For £12.95 the best all you can eat Chinese that we have ever had. Food was hot & plentiful with lots of delicious choices on all courses. Staff were brilliant also. Highly recommended.
