Chetwode Arms in Cheshire West and Chester

We went for a drink one time and vowed to return to try the menu. Last month it was was for a Sunday lunch. It was the better than any we’ve had anywhere else. So next time, we had the Out of Africa menu. Totally blown away. It’s more than just dining. And totally brilliant. Unique, friendly and good value. Recommended!

Amazing steak cooked on hot rocks! Friendly staff! Great service and dog friendly…what’s not to like? Amazing choice of meats!

Not been in a while and forgotten how nice the food is, staff so friendly and chatty, great place to go if you have never tried it. Pub is ‘olde Worlde’ and qwerky with its own character and the hot rocks are a must. Tracey and Paul

Out for an evening meal with Family last night, our 3rd visit here and absolutely love this place. 45 min drive from home and so very worth it. Staff are fantastic, Food is phenominal and the ambience is in keeping with the African them and very relaxing. We look forward to visiting again very soon

Amazing food and service so much choice and Hot rock stone cooking with so many choices of exotic meats to choose from definitely worth a visit if passing also dog friendly which is a bonus thanks will be visiting again.

Having driven passed loads of time, finally we stopped for Sunday lunch. What a lovely warm welcome we received, cosy nooks , fires burning in the corner of most rooms. I was soon impressed. Shown to our table , given menu… We all enjoyed a beautiful Sunday roast lunch. Lots on the menu to chose from.

Ordered takeaway on Thursday, fish and chips with curry sauce and mushy peas - perfect and can't go wrong. Hubby ordered bbq ribs - they looked amazing and I had to admit to having order jealousy. They were absolutely delicious and fell off the bone; he was ready to repeat the experience the very next day. Lovely food, fun owners - what more do you need. Highly recommended.

We went here to celebrate my dad’s birthday. We’ve been here a couple of times before and really enjoyed the experience, so we thought it would be the perfect place to take my dad. At first he was a little apprehensive about the hot stone but he absolutely loved it by the end! Everyone was so friendly and attentive. We had our little dog with us too who was welcomed with open arms. Really great place and definitely recommend. We’ll be back soon!

What a gem. We’ve been numerous time on a Sunday for Sunday lunch and early dinner as well as on on a Saturday evening and have never been disappointed. Claudia, Richard, Angela and Georgia are always amazing the food is beautiful and a credit to the chef. Would highly recommend this amazing quirky restaurant. 🥰

What a great place, really quirky and comfy with a fantastic menu. My husband and I opted for the Out Of Africa menu whilst our friends chose the Tomahawk steaks and Wow!! it was absolutely fantastic. The food is incredible and not badly priced for what you get, the atmosphere is relaxed and quirky, which I loved and the staff are great, really friendly and welcoming. We are booked in again for a few weeks time, it's well worth the drive.

I loved the food and drinks but I came back for the excellent atmosphere. Angela and Claudia are such great, lovely characters. I have had such a good laugh. I miss them and the place already and will definitely come back, all the way from Aberdeen, Scotland. Thank you for such an amazing experience!

I had to write a review as I wouldn’t of survived lock down without the gorgeous takeaways I had a couple of times a week. We also ate outside last night, although it was raining we had a lovely unique experience that I think I’ll miss when all this is finally over. Sat outside with a little fire on the table , under a cosy shelter....enjoying some delicious home cooked food. We now feel part of the family, thanks so much for everything Claudia and Richard. Plus Angela was fantastic looking after us, even in the rain, always smiling. See you again soon :-)

With an exquisite and unique beer garden and menu this pub/restaurant is perfect whether hungry or thirsty. The staff are warm and welcoming and work very hard to see you have the complete chetwode experience.

Lovely place to visit on the first day we had back of freedom, since pubs closed. Service was excellent although it was an extremely busy (and I imagine stressful) day. The food was not only original but DELICIOUS, we can't wait to return ❤🌶

After living in the area for a few years, tonight we finally tried the Chetwode for a takeaway and the food was amazing! Well organised, tasty food and good service!

We eat here regularly and the hot rocks is always fabulous. Great service and a friendly welcome, too, from Claudia and Richard who are the only public and in my 61 years who have ever remembered my name! The takeaway service is also excellent and the portions are not for the faint hearted.

Due to Covid restrictions I’ve been getting takeout from Chetwode Arms every Friday night. I have to say the food is fabulous, fresh and great quality. It’s great that we get to order our food via text which makes it extremely easy and it’s always ready exactly for when I’ve ordered it. Highly recommend!!

The owners were so lovely and so personable providing a great service. The food is amazing. We’ve been there for Sunday lunch previously which is the best we’ve eaten around the Cheshire area and really wanted to go back and try the hot rock meats. This food also didn’t fail to disappoint. It was also nice to have the interactive experience of cooking the meats to your own liking.Would fully recommend and given I rarely come onto trip advisor to provide reviews, it shows just how highly I rate it. Don’t be put off by the decor. It is very authentic but is super clean and the food is absolutely worth it. Prices are very reasonable for the portion sizes too!

We had steak on the hot rock one fillet and one ribbeye both great meals little wine and Guinness to go with it great service didn't have to wait long for food or drinks

My wife and I went for a pleasant drive down the A49 on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. There are many eating establishments from Warrington to Whitchurh and this time we opted for this beautiful place. We have not visited previously.Big car park so no problem there. Nice welcome and shown to a table.Hard working polite staff and the restuarant has a nice African theme in a traditonal building.I ordered the Hot rock lobster and steak. A first for me having a hot rock on a plate but I think its great. You can cook the steak and everything else to your own liking. Wife enjoyed her meal. No complaints at all.There were many other selections of meat from the Afrikaners, crocodile etc and I cant wait to return to try these. Fully recommended.

Me and my husband often visit this place, its an absolute little gem of a place. Food is outstanding and the staff are amazing. Claudia is so great and makes the place! Shes such a character. We often get served by a lady called Angela an shes brilliant. By far our most favourite place to come. 5* 100% .

A Little gem! Lovely steak. Had the Tomahawk and was not disappointed. Came across this pub tucked away when out on my bike during lockdown and decided to take a look now it’s open. It’s got character by the bucketload. Will go back. Jonathan

The Chetwode have been excellent during the lockdown in providing takeaway food 👌. Now we can finally go out again it was lovely to eat out here. Food was amazing.

Lovely friendly atmosphere, felt comfortable and safe. We had small fish and chips and a roast chicken dinner both excellent quality and value for money. Waitress very friendly and helpful. 10 out of 10

On a Sunday it was a roast beef dinner. And during the week a takeaway Fish and chips and burgers. Social isolating is in full control so no problem

This place should be booked up every night! The owners are just amazing! They not only cook everything to perfection each and every time but they consistently go above and beyond to please. Tonight they tweaked the menu to what we wanted, they also took the kids in the back to make their own ice creams! Our friends came tonight for the 1st time. They couldn’t believe the quality and variety of what was on the menu! I had the cod pan.... delicious! 9 year old tried crocodile.... said it was amazing and the nicest food she had ever eaten! Wagu beef out this world! Everything was!!! 5* from all 8 of us!!

We had an amazing meal. The staff were very caring and helpful. Lovely atmosphere.we had a table for 6 in a room to ourselves with a fire. Steaks on hot rocks went down very well.purple moose beer was great too.

Although we booked an early evening table on a very wet cold night we couldn't have received a warmer welcome from the friendly staff. The selection of food was good and the service and presentation excellent. Good food at reasonable prices. The bonus was that there was live Irish music a little later in the evening which we very much enjoyed.

I can't believe that we live 5 minutes away from this little gem and yet we only tried it on saturday evening. From the moment we walked through the door we felt relaxed, Angela quickly came over and took or drinks order whilst we viewed the menu, she talked us through the exotic meat choices with passion and expertise then gave us space to make our choice, I choose the fish pan which was absolutely delicious and cooked to perfection, hubby had the steak and again it was just perfect and the best he had tasted!! The owners took the time to chat with us and the passion they have for their business is amazing. So to sum up our visit, attentive amazing staff, lovey owners who have a quirky business. Can't wait to go back next Sunday for lunch, if you haven't tried this place yet you really need too. Oh and they certainly know how to Serve real Ale.

Cannot fault anything about this place. The food, the people, the atmosphere - all brilliant. We couldn't decide what to have on the Out of Africa grill so she brought out 6 different meats for us to share and have a taste of. Would highly recommend a visit.

What a great place, I tried python and Zebra for the first time ever. This place is more than just a meal out it is a fantastic experience. Hosts are so lovely too, we had a great night. I highly recommend, the only other place that I have visited like this was on safari in South Africa itself. This place is a ‘must Visit’.

We went for meal tonight adults and children, felt very welcome, very friendly staff. Child friendly too. Food was amazing. Would defo recommend and will be returning. Hot stone plate steak, wild boar and chicken. Beauiful

If you have never been to this restaurant I would highly advise you take a trip down! The atmosphere is friendly and welcoming, very cosy and warm and the food is another level!

Me and my partner have been coming to the Chetwode for the last 4 weeks regularly and every time the owners have gone above and beyond for us. We left it a little later than usual and the owners opened up the kitchen so we wouldn’t be turned away! Very welcoming and intimate service and we will be returning as usual! Would highly recommend as the food is always second to none with a fantastic variety!!

Eight of us Enjoyed an amazing Christmas Lunch today. Food as always of the highest standard. A lovely warm welcome from all and Angela looked after us wonderfully well.

We were meeting up with family and decided here was nearby, what an absolutely fabulous meal, we just couldn't fault it, 2 had roast beef, 2 rack of lamb, 1 Beef Wellington, all perfectly cooked with a variety of vegetables. We had to rush off to a meeting at short notice and they got us deserts out in no time. Staff very helpful, family run business showed through with their desire to please. Really unique decor very much based on African time abroad of owner which added that personal touch rather than the off the shelf samey books and English oak tweedy look. If you want to go out with family and friend for a cosy meal with quality food. Highly recommend, Im married to a farmer and he likes good quality meat and hard to please. We could name a handful of pubs as good as this. Honestly though why below does it ask out of the 6 questions 2 are does it suit vegetarians, I would rather it say do the staff look you in the eye and talk, is the food tasty not bland out of a packet. Were the vegetables cooked perfectly.

I have literally signed up to trip advisor so I can specifically leave a review for this SPECTACULAR eatery. This is my first time here (we’ve came here for my nephews 10th birthday) and i have to be honest in saying it’s the best meal I’ve had in such a long time! The service was amazing, the owner Claudia was so welcoming, warm, informative of the menu and hilarious (so engaging with the younger lot) and such a genuine lovely person. Our waitress Angela was so attentive and went above and beyond with everything and was so kind and warming, we felt so comfortable as soon as we walked in. The pub itself is so lovely and the food came out so quickly (The food was out of this world) and I can say I will most definitely return and recommend to all I know. Thank you so much for your hospitality and I shall see you all soon :-).

First time visit, although my daughter and family had been a couple of weeks earlier. Most delicious Sunday lunch, beautifully cooked beef with a selection of lovely fresh vegetables. First class friendly service. We have booked for Christmas Day lunch.

Four of us had just had a great stop over in Liverpool and where returning home to Winsford, the girls had said can we stop off for a sunday lunch. I decided to try the Chetwode arms (What a great choice), as we pulled up our friends said they had tried here several years ago and where not impressed, but we decided to give it a go.On entrance the owner asked had we booked (No), she found us a table and got a young waitress to clean the table. The room and pub in general is quite dark and you soon get the theme of the pub with its many artifacts, pictures and big game animals etc. The owner being Soth African and the menu has many quirky choices like, buffalo, Ostrich, Wallaby, Kangaroo etc. We actually stuck to the more conventional menu! 3 x roast dinner(2 beef, 1 Chicken) & i had tiger prawns on skewers with sweet chilli dip salad & side dish of chips. Drinks inclded Wine coke & tea. We polished it off with quite exquisite deserts, my Tiramisu was the most divine tiramisu id ever had @ £7.50 well worth it.

Second visit to this restaurant and this visit there was 11 people for my sons 24th birthday meal. Not one person at the table had a bad word to say about the food or service. Excellent waitress service, friendly and very polite. Food is excellent and compliments to the chef. Will definitely be returning to this restaurant and fully recommend to steak lovers.

Quaint pub and restaurant with lots of nooks and crannies. Very pleasant owners and staff. Unusual food selection and large portions. We only moved to the area recently and this place soon became our favourite. We have been several times already and will continue.

We had a wonderful visit at the Anderton boat lift and wanted Sunday lunch at a good country pub. We saw a sign for Chetwode Arms on the way there and decided to call for food on the way back. It’s a very quirky, old fashioned pub. We were made to feel welcome by a very friendly but a little head mistressish lady .... told me where to sit for the best breeze ...... actually didn’t mind that, she had my best interests at heart. The menu outside had a black pudding dish that my husband fancied and I wanted the beef roast. Black pudding dish unavailable so we both had the beef fillet chateau Briande roast dinner. The beef was delicious, the yorkie ok, gravy not bad, however the veg including the ‘roast’ potatoes were inedible. I would visit again, the beef fillet was £14.95! I would have that and ask for just chips to accompany.

Me and my girlfriend had the Ostrich burger, the meat was cooked medium rare beautifully (or to your liking) whole meal was delicious. They have a variety of craft beers on offer my favourite being Staropramen which was lovely.

Second visit to this lovely country pup, and it really doesnt dissapoint. The food, service, and welcoming staff, means it wont be long before we go again.great selection of real ales, and good beer garden, with climbing frames and swings for the kids.

I just can’t express my love for this place enough. Last night we had the most stunning filet steak on the hot rock with an additional rock full of lobster & prawns. I may go every week and be biased but it’s stunning 🙋🏻‍♂️

We have been coming here for a number of years but today Claudia went above and beyond what could be expected. She opened the Chetwode at lunch to enable us to take my elderly mum who has dementia out for a meal. She also provided a surprise birthday cake for my sister. One of our favourite places to eat

Visited 3rd july. The food here is really something special. The out of Africa option allows you to pick 3 meats on the hot plate. I had a lovely glass of merlot to go with it. A really enjoyable evening.

We visited The Chetwode Arms as it had been recommended to us by friends. The food was great and the service from Angela was amazing. We will be returning soon.

We stopped off on the spur of the moment for a bite to eat, husband having been to the Chetwode many years ago. Instead of traditional pub fare we were faced with a great menu featuring a super selection of South African dishes with accompanying wines. Fresh, succulent and amazingly light to eat despite our meaty choices. Will be returning with our carnivorous teenagers, the hot stones are a fun touch!

We visit regularly and Mothers Day was a bit too busy and although the food was good....it is normally excellent ...the staff tried their best to keep their heads above water😳😳

Very disappointing Mother's Day experience today! Even though we have visited here several times previously, unfortunately after today we will not be returning, nor will we be recommending this place.

Sat here at the Chetwode Arms after been recommended by a family member and we are absolutely gobsmacked at what an amazing place this is, not only is the food out of this world but the service is second to none. A special mention to Amelia & Angela who made our visit extra special with their impeccable service. We traveled to try this restaurant and booked a hotel enabling us to try their equisite wine list and the ‘walking wine list’ sure did deliver what fab service and knowledge. Fantastic food, wine & service we will DEFINITELY be back! Also make sure you get a ‘Don Pedro’ for pudding... an adult milkshake which is amazing!

We just went for a meal there tonight and all I can say is WOW.. the food was great, the staff really lovely, especially Angela who was there at any of our requests. This was the first time we visited this place and we left with such a good impression. We will definitely be returning due to the wide range of food offered and lovely staff. I booked here for a friend’s 50th birthday celebration. For many of our group of 10 it was their first time here. We had a room to ourselves which was lovely & had been due to the organisation of the staff rather than my request - a nice touch I thought. The staff were helpful and all our meals were served together in good time. The food was delicious & good value. It was a great venue and we will be returning another time that is for sure!

The owners were so rude to myself and my fellow guests. As a member of Dine Club, it was recommended by them.

Have been meaning to try this place for ages, so booked a table for my Husbands birthday and we loved it! Food was amazing, there was a group of 15 of us and the staff couldn't do enough for us. Would highly reccomend if your looking for something a bit different. Can't wait to go back.

After having Christmas lunch at home for many years we decided to go out this year and chose The Chetwood Arms. We weren’t disappointed. the food was excellent and I was impressed by the buffet type starters and sweets. The staff were very attentive and ensured we had a great experience. Only minor criticism was the rooms were slightly cramped as it wasn’t easy to move around but really not an issue. We will be booking again for next year.
