Chequers Smoke House in West Oxfordshire

Welcomed by a very helpful young man, very friendly and attentive. I had homemade buger which was delicious, the wife had the vegan hotdog which she said was gorgeous, food was very, very nice, topped it off with two filling puddings. All the staff were great, the young ladies that looked after us were very friendly too. Dont change what you are doing, keep up the good work, we will come back again next time we visit Oxfordshire.

We have been using the smoke house in Witney for over 7 years in the old place and new and noticed a few small down hill changes the last 3 yrs since covid etc . We booked in last Sunday for 5 of us and as usual i told my friends how good it was with LARGE portions but had a shock . Smaller portions of every thing the most noticeable was the coleslaw portion was tiny and not creamy like it used to be , the large 2 hot link sausages were reduced in size by a third and you only get one then the burnt ends were small cubes and was mixed in with the beef brisket which was also smaller , the pulled pork was smaller and looked a mess . I Realise times are hard but now i wont return to eat again as im feeling very ripped off . It seems very were is charging the same or more money for less well its not on .

Large group, had a few visits before. Waiting staff attentive but overworked. Food really has reduced in quality. Clearly a microwave to reheat being used, shame as a few years back it was much better. No longer worth going out of your way for. If you must go stick to the burgers.

Thought we try something new. Staff could not be bothered, busy on the mobile and then forgot about their customers. Decided to leave.

Visited here for a meal on a Sunday evening on the August bank holiday weekend. It was pretty busy when we got there but emptied out after a while, I think our booking was quite late compared to others. Service was great, food was really good & tasty, definitely lots of it. In our group we had 2 platters, all of it well cooked & full of flavour. You get a lot of food in a platter & it's all tasty but it is on the expensive side. The macaroni cheese & chips on the side were very good. I had beef chilli & not the platter but tasted some of it & 2 others had fish cakes which were huge & apparently really good. Would definitely return.

On way back from Fairford airshow and needed to get something to eat. Found this place (now called Red Lion Smokehouse) on Google maps. Immediately we were welcomed in and seated. Our six year old was entertained by the lovely staff who were very patient with him and answered all of his very many questions. Food came out quickly and was lovely. Recommend the veg burger. Kids portions were well sized and lots of options for them to choose from. Wine very nice. Chef spoke to our son before we left. Friendly team feel there and feeling that staff had sense of pride in what they do.

Thought I would see what all the fuss was about , not overly impressed with food or staff . There was a strange vibe when we walked in and instantly made it a weird experience . Staff were disinterested and offish and one girl too busy playing on her phone behind the bar . Food came out within 5 mins which always makes me a bit dubious and it was very underwhelming , lacked flavour and felt like basic pub grub at best, certainly no Smokehouse ! The portions were a bit tight too , expected more for the prices . The gluten free main menu had a good choice but the pudding options were poor . £ 3 for a can of cream soda ! 🧐 sorry guys won't be rushing back.

On a brief visit to Witney and this place was recommended. As walk ins we knew there was little chance we would be seated as it looked like they had a high top and we were right. It was explained we could come back in 90 mins so I asked if we could possibly be seated just for drinks whilst we waited. We weren’t disappointed. We were seated quickly with them knowing there was no pressure to serve us, yet we were served within 30 mins. The platter was too much for 2 but the staff were amazing, attentive and even though they were busy managed to juggle their covers and seat those walkins (like us) Thank you!

As hard as the staff all tried, and they were good, the Red Lion Smokehouse is not as good as they (the company/owner) make it out to be.

After reading the previous reviews the I visited the now Red Lion Smokehouse, initial impressions when you walk are good and similar to other smoke houses, unfortunately the food did not live up to any of the previous positive reviews. The restaurant was not busy with a handful of tables so no real excuse. Service was friendly although a bit inconsistent, drinks would be slow then then the next round would be fast and the same with the food, the starters arrived in a reasonable time but the mains took a long time and then only half the order arrived before another 5mins wait for the rest, I don't mind this if the food is worth the wait, unfortunately it was not. I had the Salt and pepper squid to start and it was ok although a little small. the big disappointment was the mains, I had beef brisket and it was the worst i have ever had, so dry and tough with a gravy like sauce, in my opinion i would say this had been oven cooked probably the previous day re heated and a bit of the gravy put on to serve. no smoke rings in the meat not tender at all and not a hint of flavour from it and i could have done with a steak knife to get through it! i had burnt end and mac and cheese on the side, burnt end were not any better and the mac n cheese average at best. to finish i had the pecan pie and it probably came out of a packet. its really frustrating when a restaurant sells itself as a smoke house and is no more than a chain carvery at best! from the four of us dinning all of us agreed we would not go back again.

Visited today with a family member, haven't been since they moved from up the street and not for a few years - The first time we went the food was amazing couldn't fault it, however, after today I have no plans on returning. We ordered the same thing we had a few years ago, which was the combo of half rack of ribs, burnt ends, pulled pork which came with chips and fries. The ribs were massively overcooked, had very little meat and were extremely tough, (didn't finish them) the burnt ends were fatty and not as soft and the pulled pork was a little watery. The coleslaw was not what I would call coleslaw. My grandmother ordered a side of beef chilli cheese fries but they had no heat at all. I ordered a vanilla milkshake which was not great and I expected a lot more flavour, the ones I make at home are 100% better. I feel that the meat was reheated and not fresh - whether this is true or not I shall never know but it definitely wasn't as good as it has been. I can't fault the staff member that served us, very lovely to talk to. My grandmother loved the music (her music) which she thoroughly enjoyed

The food , Rack of ribs, chips and homemade coleslaw were delicious and the staff were lovely and friendly. My only complaint was the service charge at the end it is optional but i always feel obliged and don't want any fuss saying id rather not pay . In these hard times to charge 10% is quite a lot on top of the bill , after looking i could not find any were were it stated it charged a service charge i think it needs to be stated to make customers aware as we were on Holiday and wasn't aware of it .

Super friendly staff, service was good, although we did feel slightly rushed. It was surprisingly quiet for a Friday night, but perhaps as we were dining after 8, that may be why? We were seated at the rear of the establishment and felt a little excluded as there were no other guests so there was no atmosphere. Food was ok, it wasn’t as amazing as other reviewers have suggested. It was hot and well presented. However, all of our guests felt that it was overpriced for what was served.

Amazing food, friendly staff….although they’re now called Red Lion Smokehouse….great experience. The “Big Smoke Platter” for two…well, 2 adults (one of them is a 19 stone meat eater) and two kids were not able to finish it!!!!!! Amazing!!!!

We booked to eat here during a stay in Witney, we noticed its moved and changed name to the Red lion Smokehouse.When you 1st walk in it looks co cosy and busy but we were shown to a table out the back which was much quieter which we preferred.We found the staff to be friendly and helpful and it was good to see them all wearing visors to protect them and you.The food was amazing and very filling and all on the Smokehouse theme. We opted for pulled pork with chips and slaw and half rack of ribs with also came with chips and slaw (could have done with more slaw as it was amazing)For the gents its worth a trip to the toilets as the urinals are old metal beer barrels!!

This is our first visit since they moved. It didn’t start too well as we tried to get in the entrance but it turned out to be a door not used. A member of staff stared at me shaking his head, rather than directing us to the actual entrance further down the road. We were then approached by someone who took us to our table but we had to almost run to keep up with her and she wasn’t really interested in us for the rest of the night which was a shame as she was the member of staff waiting on our table. The food was ok, not as good as previous occasions and seemed heated up rather than cooked. Having said that it was 40 off pounds for 2 of us with a starter and main and 2 drinks each.Over all ok ish but the service needs to improve.

Maybe we were really unlucky, having read other reviews, but our whole experience of visiting here was poor. We thought we'd try it out after seeing they had moved premises and booked a table. On arrival, we were taken over to our table, but it wasn't ready so we got taken to another out through the back, where there weren't many people and were told our cutlery and menus would be brought over. We waited....and waited...and waited. Servers were passing us but no one seemed interested so after over 10 minutes we called to a waitress and said we had been waiting a while. We didn't get any apology, instead we were made to feel an inconvenience as she 'didn't know we were there.' When we got our menus I asked about gluten free options but it was all a but vague and I was told there wasn't a specific menu, although I had seen one online, so used that to choose rather than risk it. Our food took a very long time - we just ordered 2 mains, and other groups who had come in 10 minutes after us got their food first. The food was okay, but nothing amazing, which was disappointing as I had expected it to be great. After a few mouthfuls of coleslaw, I found it tasted very odd and not pleasant. My boyfriend had already wolfed his down but I asked him to try mine to see if it was just me. He said it tasted totally different to his and almost off-tasting, so I left it. The chips were lovely though! When I went to the ladies toilets, there was no toilet roll in any of the cubicles, which wasn't great! Overall, the service was really slow and we were clearly forgotten about at the beginning, the food was very average and we just felt quite disappointed as we were excited to try a new place that had such good reviews, but it looks like we were very unlucky! It has put us off returning as there are so many other places nearby with friendly, efficient service and delicious food.

Visited for the first time with my wife but had had a takeaway delivered during lock down. Had the full platter for 2 and wow,fantastic. Couldn't fault it. Great service and friendly staff. Felt very welcome and the staff worked hard to observe social distancing and hygiene. Will definitely be back.

Couldn’t have had a better experience at Chequers, the food was out of this world, and the service second to none! We had the platter, and at £44.00 I was a bit sceptical but the outcome was outstanding! So much food for the money and the quality was fantastic! Have never eaten at a better smokehouse, not even in the states!

So our first night of our stay we came across and booked a table at Chequers Smokehouse and very thankful we did.We were welcomed by our waitress who sat us at a lovely table at the front of the restaurant. Our little one was hungry so we quickly ordered a kids macaroni cheese for her while the wife and I had a drink, well within minutes the dish came out so we managed to feed our daughter so she would let us enjoy our meals later on.My wife ordered a small macaroni cheese and side of haloumi fries while I went for the big pig burger and can honestly say that was one of the best burgers I have eaten (and I do enjoy a good burger), the burger was cooked to perfection and the pulled pork was succulent, a great dish and well you can't go wrong with a good haloumi fry or macaroni cheese so everything was absolutely delicious, even had room for a warm pecan pie for dessert which was absolutely delicious.The waitress and hands on owners delivered top quality service which was warm and welcoming while still very professional. The ambience and decor was perfect for the occasion too.We went for an early thursday night meal because of our little one and the restaurant was nearly full with a couple of walk ins wanting a table as well which to me speaks volumes for the kind of quality of food and service that is served. Overall an amazing restaurant serving really top quality 'American cuisine' which I will be definitely recommending to all of my family and friends.

Excellent meal in this restaurant, I had the pulled pork with bbq sauce delicious, husband had full ribs, which he described as amazing with the meat just falling off the bone. Staff were very friendly and informative. Definitely recommend

When I need to scratch my BBQ itch, this my go-to place. Never had a bad meal, never had bad service. Stop what you are doing and go there now...trust me, y'all thank me later!!!

Food was nice, but for the price (£47 for two mains, a side and a couple of beers), pretty average. The use of the cheapest possible “kebab shop” quality tomato ketchup sums it up. Would be nice to have some jars of a few home made bbq sauces to add to the food for extra flavour

Had a fantastic experience and meal here on 14th Feb. Arrived without a booking but we were given a table prior to the restaurant being full for Valentines. We were served by Harry who made it a perfect dining experience. The food is fantastic from the main to the the desert. We can’t wait to go back, thank you! X

Had a great lunch recently. Started with the Mac n cheese which on its own was quite filling. I had the beef chilli which was a perfect portion size for me. Would have been small for him indoors. Fortunately he went for one of the combos (ribs and burnt end I think) and that was a much bigger portion. Defeated him. We were the only ones there (mid afternoon- we were grateful it was open) but that wasn’t a problem. Will definitely go back, probably in the evening when there are more people around. Love supporting independents that follow their dream to have their own business.

Gluten free options are incredibly limited. Everyone else’s food looked amazing but mine was bland. No starters and only 1 dessert option (sorbet). Gluten free food came out later than everyone else’s as chef made a mistake too.

Spent a Saturday evening here with family. Good portion sizes, tasted ok, good atmosphere but very busy. Staff seemed attentive despite their busy’ness. Would go again (probably when a little quieter).

Been visiting the chequers on and off for a good few years now, have also recommended to family and friends. We went as a large party for my husbands birthday as it was a large party we pre-ordered via email. When we arrived it took a little while to order drinks. Our food came out quite quickly but mine was wrong and was left the only one on the table not eating for a good 5 mins or so. The waiter apologised and said I would get a free drink, this didn’t happen. No one came and checked on us or ask if we wanted another drink. Our plates were cleared and again not asked if we wanted more drinks. I chose the sorbet which was lovely but for £5.50 I think it was very steep for 2 scoops. Long story short, I felt let down to be honest we chose the chequers as it’s always been great but felt let down this time round. Not sure if new staff but they certainly wasn’t attentive and that goes a long way

The further I try to trace back since I relocated to the Cotswolds around 2007, the more great memories I have of Chequers Smoke House, a lovely - but not pretentious - American "super size me" styled little place in the menu stakes, one that has had some renovation work done to the building recently. This is one of the best restaurants you will be able to find in Oxfordshire for fried chicken, barbequed chicken, gourmet pulled pork, seasoned fries and milkshakes. It literally trumps McDonalds every day of the week - but I won't say too much, sometimes the hidden gems are best left to the weekly Witney wanderers amongst us. If you are the wanting to get lost in the woods type, this cosy Texan themed eaterie is close to the Witney bus garage bus stop area and the Corn Street collection of restaurants as I call them at the moment. It has been open for over five years and deserves the praise it has been given to date.

Saw the reviews and we love meat so had to try the smoke house. We went for family dinner, milkshakes were lovely and food delicious. Good size portions too. My dinner came out on a tray. We were so full did not have room for dessert. Sweet potato fries were beautiful. Thanks.

Haven't been here in a while so thought we would re visit. Great friendly service. Enough time to browse the menu and drinks arrived promptly. Fab milshakes! Solid menu choice and still had the novelty of the metal plates. Substantial portions. Well worth a visit.

Booked a table of 14 for a friends birthday and pre ordered. Service was extremely slow, over an hour and twenty minutes for food to come out. One meal was missed off and when it came the chicken was cold and pink in the middle. Would not recommend at all. Food was nice enough but the service, or lack of, was extremely disappointing.

Four of us ate here on Saturday night.. The food was good overall, however my husbands beef brisket was not very tender. The pork ribs, pulled port and burnt ends (however not burnt or crispy) were nice. Quite expensive for what you get and the quality of meat. All meals were served on old enamel baking trays; quite quirky but they did look quite grubby, chipped and in need of replacing. Would we eat here again - probably not, lots of other places to eat in Witney.

Found this gem by chance! What an amazing place - from the welcome as we entered, the quick service, the very pleasant staff and the total atmosphere. Decided to go here on the last night of our holiday to Oxford. Wow the food was amazing! Cooked to perfection and plenty of it!! Kids had food from kids menu and loved it too! Staff friendly and helpful and food reasonably priced. Must try...so much choice!!

We were both really pleased to have found this restaurant. A warm welcome and great decor greeted us. I had the nachos to start - I should have resisted, but they were warm and crisp! We both had a mix plate of beef, shredded pork and burnt ends with fries and coleslaw. What a portion! The meat was fab too. The burnt ends are awesome - soft but well cooked ends of the joints. There was enough for us to have a takeaway box for lunch the next day. Staff were really polite and friendly, if we were nearby again we would certainly return!

We dropped in without booking for an early evening meal & we were lucky enough to get a table (always book if you can) the menu is full of mouth watering offerings & my hubby and I both opted for a combo of beef brisket, pulled pork & burnt ends which came with fries & houseslaw. It was all really lovely (the sides were a lot smaller than our previous visits) everything was tasty & freshly cooked. It would have been nice to of been offered sauces (they used to have a selection on the tables which have now sadly gone) but bar that all great. Drinks were lush especially my Central Park cocktail, I would of loved to of had ordered another but we didn’t see a waitress again after we had our food, so I missed out this time.

This was our second visit here and again the food was pretty dam good.

This is one of our local 'go to' restaurants. Everybody loves it in my family and we have introduced it to many of our friends. The food is fabulous particularly if you are a carnivore and we have never been disappointed. The only negative thing to say is that every time we go the portions get smaller but not the prices! Our last visit was last week and for the first time we didn't feel we had got value for money. In our experience many restaurants, once established, optimize on profit to the detriment of their customers and long term to their business.

This was our second visit here. Wasn’t so impressed the first time but had a craving for BBQ food so tried it again.

My three daughters and their families gathered at the Chequers for my youngests' 40th birthday. The staff were very accommodating and decorated the table for us. The food was fabulous and after my daughter had spent 3 years in Canada, it so reminded her of that time!

We love the smokehouse! It’s our family favourite for lunch or dinner and the cocktails are the best in Witney!

Been here before and had a decent evening but tonight was a shame. The servers are young and aren’t trained well and there doesn’t seem to be any management presence, you can’t visibly see anyone running the floor which is why I assume they all lean on the bar chatting when they think there’s nothing to do. The food was hit and miss a lot of it was so dry you almost regretted putting it into your mouth as it took so long to chew and it felt like a bit of a gamble to swallow. Again down to the lack of management the toilets were pretty poor, the floor soaked in urine, toilet roll on the floor, again soaked and the top of the toilet lifted off displayed that the handle had snapped so you can’t flush it, possibly an out of order sign might of been an idea? It’s a nice place it’s just a shame whoever owns/manages is seems pretty clueless or doesn’t really care

This was our second visit to the Chequers Smokehouse and it didn't disappoint. We had mains of Old Smokey's Crispy Fried Chicken and Beef Short Rib with sides of burnt ends, hot link sausages and fried onion strips. All dishes were so delicious and we loved the Soda Folk Root Beer as well. We also had desserts of Mint Aero Sundae and Lion Bar cheesecake.The only slight downside was that the desserts didn't come out together and my partner had finished half his sundae before my cheesecake was served. Good service and excellent value for money. Booking essential / there is on street parking outside the restaurant.

We visited here after wandering around Witney and were impressed with the food. The meat was cooked to perfection and there was plenty of it.

Been to this venue at least 3 times and each time it has been a different experience. It is in my opinion pot luck.

My partner and I visited the chequers smokehouse on bank holiday Monday at lunchtime, the restaurant was about half to 2/3 full we were taken and given a choice of three tables which shows that they went fully booked. we were given menus and then this is where the problems began we had to ask a member of staff if we could order once we did which was about 25 minutes after we arrived, I ordered the spicy ribs, only to be told that we should have been notified on arrival that they were not on the menu that day....so I had to quickly make another choice. once we ordered we waited another 50 minutes for our food to arrive. On arrival I immediately said to our server that I was unhappy with my chicken salad the salad leaves were minimal and wilted and looked incredibly unappetising the avocado was brown and the rest of the salad was mediocre to say the least there was no dressing and Although the server was very apologetic I felt that he shouldn’t have brought out a meal looking like that from the kitchen especially when it’s the only salad on the menu it should’ve looked outstanding and it failed miserably.

I had a wonderful birthday here. I was looked after very well, great food, great staff. Very friendly And accommodating. Will definitely come back.

Have been here a few times now & never disappointed. We went for a family birthday meal. Service was good. Corn dogs, ribs & burnt ends, mac n cheese, chilli all good. The prices were good for what we had. Gets quite busy so worth booking even if going early

Although this type of food would not be my first choice I was very happy with my meal, The service was good too even though one chap seemed to be doing everything. Portions were a good size, food tasty and the atmosphere was jolly - although a little loud for an old fuddy duddy like me.

Very good food as usual, had the baby back rib combo, love the burnt ends, nice White Russian cocktail to finish. Will be back again

Convinced to visit with friends after vowing never to revisit - mistake!

Have been before years ago but this was very different. A great welcome fom everyone, starting with the excellent bar tender everyone was lovely. Great meal, we had starters of the Nachos and corn dogs followed by a hot dog and pulled beef. All were absolutely lovely. We were amazed at just how hard the waiting staff worked running between the tables (it was absolutely packed), but they carried on smiling and being attentive to everyone. We will definitely be back very soon.

4 of us ate here and the whole experience was perfect! The lady who served us was brilliant, the food awesome and the Oreo cheesecake was divine, we ordered an extra slice it was that good!! Will definitely be going back! Thank you! X

Travelled 2 hours to stay with friends and had to return here. The place was packed and you need to book in advance. The food is fantastic and superb value.

Food was adequate but what let the whole thing down was the lack of welcome from staff. I don't expect a hug but a smile might make me feel a little more welcome. The Mac and cheese was okay but has little flavour. The nachos were burnt and slightly soggy. I think it is quite hard to mess up nachos but they succeeded. The meat was all okay but could have done with more sauce

Don’t know if we are their target audience but we were very disappointed, the food was average we had chicken with fries and a ribs combo, the sauce was not particularly tasty. Some of the chicken looked a little pink so I didn’t eat it. I didn’t complain for two reasons; first of all I had enough to fill me up and secondly as we were seated right by the serving hatch and toilets I heard one of the cooks say to the waitress that there was no more chicken!!

My partner is a particularly fussy eater, and this is on of the few places we go and have never been disappointed! Staff are amazing, and food is always fantastic!

Our sister-in-law chose here for a belated 50th birthday meal. The initial welcome by staff was good and we were seated immediately. Our orders were taken quickly and our Teasers (starters) came out in good time. I opted for the Cheese & Spinach Potato Skins which were delicious. For my main I chose the Pulled Pork (of course) which again was delicious and the portion sizes are generous. Only 2 of us had desert, I chose the chocolate fudge cake, again delicious and a generous portion.

My son wanted to try here for his birthday. Really nice place to come - laid back friendly staff although they were really busy. Food was great (although don't come here if you are dieting like me!!!), prices reasonable and a good ambience. Would recommend booking a table as they do get busy.

After going to the smokehouse a fair few times for dinner we decided to go back again last week. With everyone ordering something different everyone was happy with what they had and cleared the plates! However, I did notice that I didn’t get half as much pulled pork as I usually do (creature of habit and always order the same thing) although, the chips have a new seasoning on them and they taste amazing!! The service was efficient and friendly so obviously will be going back, I’m sure it was just a one time thing!
