Chequers Inn Lytchett Matravers in Purbeck

First experience of a pub in England. Great atmosphere and decor, super friendly staff and good food excellent prices.

Lovely place. Bar staff were wonderful. Locals were really friendly, pool table and dart board available. The inside is so quaint and beautiful but with a built on huge conservatory for the summer sun! I would definitely go back again.

Used to be the pub around for locals around when the old owners were there, it’s been completely ruined now. Pool table moved and now charges a significant amount, limited menu and service etc limited. Feels like a basic menu and unprofessionally written, like they are forced to serve food. Won’t be returning and new manager rude.

Camping up the road at Huntick Farm, we came into the Chequers Inn late lunch time for a bite to eat and we were pleasantly surprised they had a gluten free food option (my wife is coeliac) and we could take our dog in too. The GF Thai Fishcakes were amazing and we felt really looked after during our visit. Murphy our staffie got plenty of loves from everyone, so he was very happy too. We loved it so much we came back for a GF breakfast the next day and we were not disappointed with this either. We fully recommend the Chequers Inn.

On the plus, lovely girl serve us and the beer was good. The limited menu was also limited again as there were several things not available. This included scampi, mushy peas and certain condiments. Poor show guys, we won't be returning.

Traditional pub. Welcoming. Limited menu on a Sunday - just the Sunday roasts. I had the beef but was rather overcooked despite promised some 'pink'.

Plenty of food and good quality beef but unfortunately overcooked, not medium rare as stated.

Was not impressed. Beer good, food not so. Menu was not the same as on website.Will not go in depth but they will not be seeing our custom again.

Welcome back Tim & Vanessa. Food remains fantastic, service is first class - could ask for more in our local pub. Please don’t leave again!!

Shame on you - the new management at Chequers Inn - on Sunday 5th May 2024 - apparently understood to be your first attempt at a Sunday Lunch kitchen since taking over........ - when you turned out all the lights in the place and had a 'bloke' sit in your car park and blatently LIE to those turning up for pre-booked sunday lunches. Telling customers that both your Gas and Electricity were off. Strange that the houses both next door and across the road all had their lights on - oh, and unless it's a major disaster (earth quake / flood / volcano etc) - both these utilities do not mysteriously stop working at the same time. !!!! We had prebooked on saturday and had stated at the time that a number of our party would be walking - we walked 2.6 miles from the Camp site and walked past the Rose and Crown, to be turned away from the Chequers Inn; then had to walk back to the Rose and Crown - who by the way were brilliant and totally accommodated us... Wouldn't recommend this hostlery to anyone who wants to eat.

It's a great little pub. We dropped by chance after feeling hungry after a trip out. We was not disappointed one bit the food was good and well priced we could not fault it. Credit to the manager and the team. We did expect to be able to have a table due to being Xmas eve but no trouble the manager got us in. We will be returning. The one fault my phone wouldn't work when I went to pay embrassing lol good job I had a back up lol. Be warned the reception is not that good on the network I use O2 lol. Overall 10 out of 10 thank you

This was an ad hoc visit, we hadn't had breakfast, and time was pressing. So we thought we would try somewhere we hadn't visited before. We are so glad we did. We were welcomed from the minute we entered. It was fairly busy at 230 ISH the tables were well spaced out so COVID complyaint it is family friendly we went for some good old plain food which arrived promptly and piping hot. No complaints there. We thought well it is Christmas eve so let's have a dessert, We went for the apple and cinnamon crumble with ice cream we weren't disappointed one bit. It was lovely. Over all I carnt see why we haven't visited sooner. It's a treat. And the price is reasonable. I like the touch on the menu, asking if you don't like any that is on the side please ask and we will not put things you don't like on the plate and it saves waste. If you use your phone to pay make sure you have a back up as signal not good so had to use a physical card as it was a bit difficult putting my phone in the machine lol. Overall I cannot fault one bit. Well done to the landlord/ landlady and the team.

As ever Vanessa Tim and team made a fabulous carvery,all of it delicious. Gluten free yorkshire pudding, everything else I could possible want and then a gluten free sticky toffee desert. Just tge best way to have a Sunday lunch.

Brilliant always go when visiting South Lytchett

Meal for 14 on Friday night. Staff and service were great, especially as we were a large group. Food was excellent. We had asked for a couple of dishes to be adapted slightly which they did. I recommend the bass fillet. It's easy to get fish wrong but it was cooked to perfection. We had a great evening. I only gave 3 stars for atmosphere as it was quite chilly and dimly lit in the conservatory, where we were seated. I would certainly eat here again but I would wear warmer clothes.

I have to say this is one of the best roast dinners I've had in Dorset for a long time!!! It had been many years since I visited this cosy pub in lytchette but it didn't disappoint at all! The restaurant was full up with diners, we were seated in the conservatory which was comfortable, bright and spacious! A good variety of drinks were available, the wine was really tasty too (I'm quite fussy) but the roast was on another level and very affordable priced! It was superb and totally worth it. Looking forward to booking again sometime soon :)

After being let down at a venue near by The Chequers was a very pleasant experience. Should have booked here first.

Always come here for the carvery on a Sunday when down from the North East to visit family.

Very happy to be able to call this place my local pub. Been in for dinner on numerous occasions now and have never been disappointed, the food and service is always superb! Would highly recommend. 👌

Pleasant evening meeting with friends. Very helpful and efficient staff. We all agreed on full marks for the food and drinks. Being a Wednesday it was very quite and this was reflected in the atmosphere. Price was on the high side but acceptable. A 10% Service charge is added to your bill automatically and although we would have happily given same, we all agreed we would prefer to decide ourselves on the service.

Visited this gem of a pub it is in village where we are staying on holiday, we all had the Sunday roast carvery and it great value and beef was out of this world and vegetables was amazing Vanessa the owner is lovely too and the rest or team are very friendly

Fantastic pub with attentive welcoming staff! I'm Gluten free and couldn't wish for a better all day menu. Wonderful Sunday carvery with Gluten free gravy and Yorkshire puddings. Definitely a rare 5 out of 5 stars.

Our MGOC had lunch at Chequers Inn today, the food service and quality is great as usual. I would highly recommend this establishment, that would not be beaten on the quality of food at a fair price.

Really cold and poor atmosphere

Excellent meal at the Chequers, food absolutely oustanding and the staff helpful warm and friendly. Dropped a star with the lighting being too bright and a bit lacking in ambience.. Would return for the food and staff.

Had a wonderful curry tonight at the Checkers inn, Vanessa and her team were friendly and helpful , we had turned up on a curry night so decided to try the Lamb Jalftezi, I was a bit concerned about how tender the lamb might be , but should not have worried , my lamb was melt in the mouth, unctuous, medium in strength and was accompanied by pilou rice , naan and we opted to share the extras, which were plenty for 2 to share , beautiful homemade onion baghi ! We didn't have a lot of time which was a shame as a great singer and guitarist had just started up . Have booked to come again.

The best Sunday roast, amazing staff and food is never disappointing

Visited the Chequers Inn for the first on a Sunday... Carvery is a MUST!!! Food is delicious, reasonably priced & large portions! Staff are friendly & helpful! Definitely recommend!

Chanced upon this country pub one lunch time and went in with no expectations. We were pleasantly surprised by the light bite menu and ordered a soup a pan fried halloumi salad with sweet potato fries. The presentation was great and it tasted amazing too! We were so impressed we will definitely be back. Very reasonable prices and lovely surroundings too.

Amazing food, I've been numerous times on Saturdays and Sundays. The carvery is brilliant and very reasonably priced too. Can't go wrong here for Sunday lunch. Owner and staff are top notch. Love this pub

Came in on Wednesday 15/06/2022, evening for open mic night,. Absolutely a great atmosphere,. Steffi and I had Nachos with Cajun chicken for 1,. Each, Wowww,. Superb,. Definitely enough for 2 people,. Can't imagine how big the sharer is,,,,,,. 🌟🌟🌟🌟. Definitely be coming again and booking a table for the carvery,. Sooon. Thanku.

The two stars are for selling beer, and having edible food. The carvery was fine for the money. Puddings were abysmally unimaginitive, but edible. (£15 for a carvery and pudding) Now - here's the rub - the staff (girls) are inattentive and slow, and have seemingly never been shown how to look positive, be helpful, and to 'serve' a customer. They were only pleasant in their innocence of a working environment. Even cleaning tables was painfully slow to watch. The front of the building makes it look the place is closed, and there is sadly no automatic door-closer on the front door. As the vast majority of the clientele were obviously born in an open field, the door was left wide open, and the winter chill blew straight in. (I'm not a grumpy pensioner btw - yet) Not a good afternoon was had by any of our table, and I doubt we'll ever return. I've had better food, and atmosphere eating overpriced Fish and chips, sat on the Poole harbour wall in midwinter, being hassled by Gulls.

A place that is not just a pub but the heart of a community. Fantastic food and choice of drinks. Pop in to the weekly market and they hold some crafty fairs too. A great friendly team you won't be disappointed.

Absolutely love The Chequers, the staff are lovely, the food is amazing, it's our local, and we'll always go there when we have the chance, ranging from just my wife and me, to having a large family get together, oh, and my cousin will drive down especially from Exeter just for their ribs, he loves them. Vanessa and Tim are lovely, they make The Chequers what it ruly is, amazing. 10/10.

Was looking forward to lunch at this place today. Not been there for years and thought we’d give it a go. Very disappointed. Exterior needs a spruce up. Staff friendly but pub and restaurant almost empty. Not sure why I had felt the need to book in advance. Was spoilt for choice with free tables. Restaurant area very dated. Menus grubby and crumpled up. Soft drinks were flat without a bubble in sight. Paid for drinks and left without trying any food. Absolutely zero atmosphere. Might be okay when busy. Hope the owners can turn this place around and make it what a success it could be with some thought and some investment being made.

Lovely food ranging from lite bites to a 3 course meal. Delicious sandwiches crammed full of roast meat. Puddings homemade and very tempting. Friendly and helpful staff. Definitely worth a visit.
