Chequers Inn, Hanham in South Gloucestershire

Ordered drinks on a beautiful sunny Saturday down by the river, arrived within 5 minutes, no queuing just download pub app, ordered chips and courgettes in tampura batter also arrived within 5 minutes. Sat with dog and soon enjoying the day, magic.

Love this spot, food is lovely but even more than that the staff are exceptional - always super friendly and attentive, most recently our lovely server Harvey made a birthday meal a delight with his smiling face, friendly demeanour and attentive service. Also great approach to allergy management with regard to ordering etc. Very reassuring. Will defo be back!!

This is the second time I have visited Chequers Inn, each time I have been served by Max. 10/10 , he has a great personality, a good balance of being helpful, I mean genuinely helpful & not being too overbearing which can be annoying. Food was great too, however due to such good service by Max, I will be returning

The Chequers is a cozy gem with a warm atmosphere. Our server, Harvey, was attentive and made sure we had everything we needed. The food was exceptional! We enjoyed the chicken supreme, haddock and chips, and roast beef. Each dish was flavourful and beautifully presented. For dessert, we couldn't resist the apple crumble and sticky toffee pudding - both were divine. Highly recommend!

I’ve been home about 10 mins and wanted to write this asap… I’ve just been for a birthday meal here and I cannot believe how great it is (old school local that hasn’t been to the Chequers for a long time). The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was fantastic (we all had a different meal and agreed). Thank you for a great experience and you have a guaranteed 3 customers (and a Sproodle) that will visit more often

Had a pint here in their beer garden overlooking the river, was a really nice atmosphere and service was great!

Really disappointed with the January menu today. We went for the 3 course menu on offer in January for £22 for a special occasion . Husband ordered Scotch Egg which was fine. We then ordered mussels and was told it came with bread, it didn't so the server got us some which I had to ask for as complimentary. We ordered a side of fries with this which was just scrappy ends of potatoes. The mussels sauce also had no bacon in it just onion and garlic . No sticky toffee available on the menu and the other dessert they had ran out of shortbread for so we were given that for free minus the shortbread. I ordered the crumble which was the only option left and that came with ice cream instead of custard by which point I was tired of complaining so just ate it. The guy serving us was great and we have no issues with the service at all but the food was pretty much a bit of a disaster all around. With so much wrong and missing from the menu I would rather them have just emailed me and been transparent, then I could have booked another time and had a much better dining experience.

Fantastic Sunday roast! Our server, Max, was very attentive and helpful. Our table had the perfect view of the river Avon, I only wish we had time to relax beside the fire in the snug!

We absolutely love coming to the chequers. The service and food is fantastic everytime we come here. Harvey was an excellent server who made sure we were looked after the whole duration.

New head chef is great, menu is lovely. Keen and chatty service from Harvey as normal, Bartender Max was also fine. Great spot for a walk and a Sunday Roast, would absolutely recommend.

Our lovely waiter Max showed us to our table and made us feel welcome. Charlie brought our drinks and was friendly. We were very happy with our meals. I can highly recommend The steak cottage pie. It was really tasty.

A lovely location for a Sunday Lunch, lovely cosy space with wonderful views across the river, staff were very attentive and helpful, checked on us multiple times throughout are visit, Max was very polite and kind. Great service

On the 9th December a friend and I popped I for a coffee to take away as we were limited on time. We asked if takeaway was an option and told by a polite barstaff girl that it was. Another barstaff girl with blonde hair said she'd make them and the other girl continued to serve others. We waited over 10 minutes for our cappuccino and mocha. In that time the blonde girl had made them in cups for use in the pub, then served 2 other customers leaving our drinks to cool. Our drinks were transfered to takeaway cups, one was then put into a jug and topped with what looked like tap water from a tap next to the coffee machine, then milk pours on before handing to us eventually. When they were handed to us, we were told it was a cappuccino and hot chocolate. When we questioned this, we were told she meant mocha. We walked out with barely warm, certainly not hot drinks. Very disappointed with this experience. We should have been served and given our HOT drinks before this person should have taken any order from another customer. I don't think using tap water, leaving our drinks to sit and swapping from one cup to another is acceptable. I did Email them directly, but no reply at all. Not great customer service.

Really nice pub with a great atmosphere. Service from all members of staff was great, checking up on us to see if we needed drink refills and clearing the table at suitable times. Unfortunately a little disappointed with the burrata, a dish that wasn't advertised as a salad but unfortunately wasn't what a few people were looking for, but others said that it was enjoyable. Plenty of drinks options and food was prompt and of good temperature. For a festive meal the table wasn't dressed very festive, although decor on the table wasn't bad at all, and did receive a lovely card from the staff.

Shame about the food here! Such a lovely location and views are great, but I just wish there was more choice on the menu and they’d up their game on quality of food. Super over priced for what it is. Eaten here a lot as it’s very local but always disappoints and made the mistake of eating there again tonight. Not again. Had sausage and mash, sausages tasted odd, mash was brown with very strong odd taste and cabbage also had a weird taste, like cheese or something. My husband had a burger which was also below average.

Unfortunately a very bad experience for me. I was part of a Christmas dinner group, so we were given a list of options to choose from beforehand. I ticked all the ones marked as vegan for my starter, main and dessert. When the starters came, I was given a crab dish and was told that was the artichoke tart. Luckily, someone else had the artichoke tart by mistake and we simply swapped. The vegan main, compared to the roast and veg everyone else was having, was about third of the size, so not very filling, but a good flavour. The dessert, however, was a syllabub. Odd seeing many others picked the same option. I asked the staff if they were sure it's vegan, the waiter even went to the kitchen to confirm, and came back saying it is, so I didn't give it a second thought. Boy was I wrong.. Not to get into the nasty details, but my stomach didn't agree with it and I spent a good amount of my morning the next day on the white throne. I did some minor investigation, and it turns out in their own menu, the syllabub is vegetarian, not vegan. But when we were filling the poll on who's getting what (provided by Chequers, not our own made poll), it was marked as vegan. Same as the brownie (which also isn't vegan). I get that it could be a mistake when creating the poll, but that's why I double checked with the staff. I'm more baffled that the kitchen staff don't know the difference between vegan and vegetarian. I feel that Chequers needs to invest a day into some solid training for their staff regarding dietary requirements. If the vegan and vegetarian options are offered, then they should be correct and the staff should be aware of them and what they entail. Otherwise this can get very nasty very quickly with the wrong person getting the wrong food.

We had a lovely roast at the Chequers inn. They had a fantastic mushroom and spinach wellington as the vegan option and offered extra gravy on the side! Max, our waiter, was brilliant and ensured we had everything we needed for a lovely evening. Would highly recommend!

This is quickly becoming my favourite place to take family and friends, as it never fails to impress! Whether it's a weeknight dinner or Sunday lunch, meat-eater or vegetarian, everyone's meal has always been top quality and absolutely delicious. The menu has enough variety whilst still feeling curated, with an emphasis on locally-sourced and seasonal produce. Staff are also so attentive and friendly, and seem genuinely pleased to provide a great service. The pub itself is so cosy with great views - no better treat after a walk along the river!

Fantastic service at our Sunday lunch with a big group of friends at Chequers Inn. We were looked after by Max who was amazing. The food was delicious and arrived very quickly and the atmosphere was great. After finishing our meal we enjoyed the river view outside with another drink! We will be back again and again I expect!

We had an excellent Sunday Roast here, our first but certainly not the last! Harvey was our server and he was so friendly and helpful. The food was excellent, perfectly cooked and packed with flavour.

We came for lunch yesterday. I had the smoked salmon sandwich and my friend the mushroom soup - both were very tasty. The staff were excellent, very helpful, didn't rush us. My friend brought a dog with her and one of the staff gave the dog a blanket to sleep on (as the floor is wooden) and a bowl of water. Great location overlooking the river. The only thing was the room was a little cold and I had to keep my coat on - other than that, I would highly recommend this pub.

Sunday roast excellent! Service was great and staff very friendly and accommodating. Nice location and tranquil views out the windows. It’s sooo much bigger inside than it looks from outside. The panoramic window area is the place to book!

If you haven't yet been, it is the place to go for a proper Sunday roast! Went there with my friend's family. Great customer service. After lunch you can could a stroll along the canal, even better if you have a dog as well. The best view would be next to the windows overlooking the canal. Perfect for Autumn, Summer and Spring. Highly recommended! 🌟 👏

One of the best roasts I had in Bristol!

It was busy, but Max sorted out my draught Guinness orders and ran it to the table. Ended up with better service than most places that don’t have a huge rush on!

I enjoyed my salmon, which was cooked beautifully. The Chequers is well situated and attractive both in the day and evening. It was pretty quiet though - which can be a good thing.

Superb meal, always a pleasurable visit

We went out to Chequers Inn for a large family meal, and we absolutely loved it! The decor of the Inn is tasteful and reminiscent of a classic West Country pub, with plenty of wooden beams and furniture in a beautiful riverside setting. They managed to fit all 17 of us on one table, which was brilliant. Roasts were delicious, well portioned and they were generous with horseradish and apple sauce. Drinks were tasty and well received. Being a party with a large proportion of children always places a strain on the staff, but the guys and gals at Chequers really pushed the envelope when it came to service and smiles, always popping round to check we had everything we needed. I'd like to particularly commend Max; he was very welcoming and friendly. I didn't catch the name of the waitress that brought us the horseradish, but she also went the extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed. All in all, we had a great time and will definitely visit again!

Lovely sunday lunch, great food, lovely staff & riverside views.

Having had a bad experience here about two months ago we were prepared to give it a second chance. Sadly nothing has changed. Service is very very slow although food had better portions this time. No one checked in on us and offered extra drinks during the 45 minute wait for food. It’s a shame as this pub has a great location. We won’t be coming again .. sorry Youngs but you need to up your game at The Chequers

Poor experience again. I don't blame the staff I think it's because the company has cut staff & budgets overall, things have definitely gone downhill in recent times. The Sunday roast was cold & not much veg. Beef red raw/sinewy & needed a steak knife to cut but wait times were quite lengthy & we returned on the basis of a poor experience earlier so plodded on. It's always so busy on Sundays & the pressure on staff is clearly visible. Youngs need to review budgets against profit.

The location is wonderful and the ambience is amazing. The service was excellent and the food was delicious. Overall it was a wonderful experience.

A delicious Sunday lunch for our family get together. Harvey gave us a warm welcome. Harvey was very proactive and made sure all was well with our table. The Roast was great value. Extras of pigs in blankets (4 in a serving) and truffles Cauliflower cheese were both delicious. The dogs were made welcome and they have a dog treats jar. Harvey bought us a few over which the dogs enjoyed. I would definitely recommend The Chequers for a Sunday Roast

Food portion size was small and not enough gravy for the roasts. No one checked in on us and when we asked if we could see the desserts, the kitchen was closed. It would have been nice to be informed when the kitchen would close to make an order as we were looking forward to the desserts, especially the kids. It was disappointing because the reviews are overall very good.

Missed 3 meals and we had to wait, whilst the rest of our table nearly finished. Beef was too rare and not enough gravy, which made the meal feel dry.

Nothing beats the Chequers on a sunny day. Seats on the balcony, good food, and friendly service.

Good food, good drinks and friendly atmosphere and staff. Often have Sunday lunch here and it's a good spot on a hot day to come with a group and sit outside.

Beautiful place. Wonderful food. But the service was the best. A gentleman from the southern hemisphere served us. He was just so welcoming and funny. The scent of fresh lavender in the restaurant was very pleasant.
