I have to be honest here I thought Spanish night, ok it will be alright bit of cheese and Spanish ham, I’m ok with that. However I couldn’t have been so far off the mark! What I’ve just had was a Michelin start tasting menu. From the amazing olive oil infused vermouth, the croquettes best I’ve ever had by a long way. The most amazing tomato on bruschetta, so simple yet only an amazing chef could make it taste like that. I could go on but suffice to say I was blown away, my view, this was a £100+ tasting experience. Please please continue these themed events they are truly special. Thank you!

We called in for lunch as a half way point on a walk. I have been to the chequers many times for lunch. I’m not sure if it’s changed hands but I doubt I will be returning. We ordered sandwich’s on brown bread at £9.50. I was expecting some lovely artisan bread with a generous side salad. It looked more liked Asda saver brown bread with a small garnish. The bread had obviously been left out & was dry to the touch. As the waitress returned with my friend’s salad we commented on this on which she touched both sandwich’s to check for herself. Surprised at her actions she then took them away & they were replaced with a reluctant apology. The staff were surly to the customer interactions we observed. An elderly lady struggled with the steps so they could sit under the gazebo which was the only shade on a very hot day. They wouldn’t open her a tab as they were sitting in the outside area even when the lady offered her card to be kept at the bar. This rule I presume is in place to avoid dine & dash but there has to be exception. The waitress reluctantly brought them coffee but was far from friendly. Some of the food we saw coming out of the kitchen looked nice but the service and attitude of the staff won’t make me a returning customer. In comparison I’ve just been to the Twisted tree near Castleford. Good food, good service, good price.

Another splendid meal in superb surroundings. The lovely Amanda, with a lovely hair style, looked after us like royalty, nothing was too much trouble. The olives as a starter were so good with amazing dressing. The chicken supreme on mash was so good, wild mushroom garnish very good accompliment for the dish, would have again. Janet had beef pie, very tasty and the gravy moreish. Brother in law had lamb shoulder and nothing left on plate it was so good. To finish we had the most amazing cheese board. The Timothy Taylor landlord was well kept and spot on, all in all a very enjoyable evening with superb hosts and staff.

Lovely food but was disappointed that the food was being served to the table before we had chance to get a drink at the bar. There were 10 people in our party and our whole dining experience was over in 50 minutes. I was asked on arrival 'is that a cake because we charge £20 for bringing your own cake, we do sell puddings you know'. This was not mentioned in previous correspondence when paying the deposit and pre ordering food. We were also charged for extra gravy which is not usual when having Sunday lunch. As I said the food was lovely but the experience was not. Shame.

Honestly, some of the best food I’ve eaten in ages. Five friends ate in here and we were all impressed. British home cooked food. Steak and stout pie was delicious. Generous helpings (veg side I’d share between two). Desserts too were huge and so good. Not the cheapest, but worth paying the difference for the quality. I would seriously recommend this pub for food.

Very disappointed booked it over the phone for 6 then get a email a few days later saying your table won't be reserved unless you pay £60 deposit, no mention of a deposit in the phone call. We the had mediocre food sat on stools with no back rest. Soup was ok but the rest was very over priced for very basic food and a very small venue choice. Then when we got the bill the £60 deposit was not taken off. Disappointed with the whole experience to be honest.

Visited for Sunday dinner as just moved to the area and looking for a new Sunday lunch spot. Good service and a cosy pub with lots of charm, log burners and a pub cat. I’ve noticed a few comments about the prices, I think they were reasonable for a small country pub in what are tough times. I’ve certainly paid similar at chains that churn out food with no attention or love. Would recommend the winter sangria - very nice! We will hopefully visit again very soon.

We have been and eaten in this pub many times over the last 40 years. It’s had its ups and downs over the years but these things are to be expected but not the extreme rudeness of the man on the door orchestrating customers. If you don’t have a table immediately (this was 6.30 in the evening…) you apologise and suggest the customer has a drink at the bar while one becomes available. Not this man - who just suggested in a curt tone that they were full and we should go away. Very poor customer service and so upsetting for my wife that we won’t be returning. If the owner/manager reads this, you need to do something about this man’s attitude.

NOT family friendly!! We were booked for Sunday lunch tomorrow but I just got a snotty call from the owner questioning why we had not pre-ordered. I explained that I was not told we needed to preorder when I booked and had not received an email as he’d stated. I said it was fine and could he send a children’s menu also to which he replied, ‘We don’t have a children’s menu, we’re not really a venue for children!’ I asked if they could do half portions of Sunday dinner and he reluctantly agreed they possibly could but only if they have beef! He was extremely rude and seemed to be blaming me for their mistake in not asking for a pre-order when booking. Have been here many times before, was a nice place to drop in with the dog in the Summer but we won’t be back! 2 families lost as loyal customers! I suggest you address your customer service!

We have dined here quite a few times over the years but I’m afraid the food is not as good as it used to be. Our food was lukewarm, the Yorkshire puddings soggy, the main course was bland and pretty basic. The inn itself is still charming and in a lovely setting but seemed to be looking tired in places. We all love rustic charm but not frayed carpets and there was a sense of grubbiness in certain areas. We won’t be visiting again.

My wife and I tried lunch here as it’s not far from our house. It’s set in a very pretty little village. It’s a fine example of an old country pub. The menu had many attractive options and tempted us both to unusually have starter as well as mains as a consequence. My wife went for the duck parfait and I went for the tomato and chorizo soup. The parfait came in a very large portion with a huge piece of toasted bloomer bread and was very tasty. My soup came with plenty of crusty baguette. I can honestly say it’s probably the best soup I’ve eaten anywhere. For main, my wife had a ribeye steak and I had locally made Syke’s sausages with mash, vegetables and rich gravy. My wife said the ribeye was as tender as you’d expect a sirloin to be but much tastier. My sausages were great and the gravy was indeed very rich and meaty. We’ll certainly be going back to work through the menu.

I’ve been here many times for Sunday lunch and it has always exceeded expectation, however, calling in today for a early tea I’m sorry to say we were extremely disappointed, went for the steak & stout pie and when it came it was mush on a plate, with a small slice of pastry on top (definitely not a pie) a scoop of mash, no veg, you had to pay extra for that, and at £17.95 it was expensive enough. The only taste was salt, I’m glad I had a pint to wash the taste away, all in all sorry to say but I would not have fed it to my dog

Have visited this pub three times in the last year for food including last week. I am not a fan of the menu changes or the pricing for separate veg etc. I would expect some veg when paying £15 for steak pie. It came only with four roast potatoes. The meat was tender but the pastry was almost non-existent. Wouldn’t mind paying a bit extra for a dish of veg for the table, but £4 for brocolli and the same for peas seems extreme. My friends thought the same. I love the pub and the staff are great but unfortunately we won’t be returning.

Having being a customer of this fine establishment for many years now it pains me to say that todays visit was most definitely my last... Following a fantastic main course of roast beef and Yorkshire puddings, my husband and I decided we had just about enough room for dessert, and proceeded to order my absolute favourite, Berry Pavlova.I was therefore a little disappointed to receive, in place of the usual homemade delights, a less than delightful meringue which was quite clearly shop bought. Now I'm not one to return food or complain in anyway, but in respect for the owners, I decided to call a member of staff to a quiet side of the bar to notify them of my issue. I'm going to cut a long story very short but I can only describe their response as aggressive, confrontational and at best petulant.Having an opinion is one thing, being confronted by a teenage Kevin and Perry type duo, defending a plastic pavlova in front of a busy a public bar however is something quite different. Thanks again, but no thanks..... !!

Popped in on the way back from York. Since we last popped in which might have been in the eighties they seem to have erected some kind of unlit tent over half the garden. Not sure what it's for. Can't imagine dining in there. Its rather dingy. The pub itself looks little different a collection of small dark rooms. It still seems to be popular but I think that's the location and antiquity effect. As pubs go I thought it pretty average in all other respects. When the sun goes down it does not have the same allure.

Arrived at 5:45pm on a Wednesday evening (14/08/19). Pub was next to empty, I asked the lady behind the bar if they were doing food as there was no cutlery etc out, she said "you can order a sandwich off the snacks menu, but you may expect a delay in food as we have a lot of bookings". There was a sign on the bar advertising a burger I asked if this was available and was told it would be at 6pm but they may be busy. We had a drink and left. Didn't feel at all welcome, is there a restaurant?, should we have booked a table?, should we have been offered a table? Who knows, it's unlikely we will return.

We have stopped for lunch at this delightful pub many times. It is a real pub inside, with a lovely, sheltered seating area in the garden, serving delicious food from an extensive menu, good ales and fine wine.

Encantadora, pequeña posada pequeña. Gran cervecería al aire libre para disfrutar de una copa y sentarse al sol.

As you enter the Chequers from the car park, through the rear gardens there are chickens roaming about freely, which sets the scene of a rustic, unspoilt old pub which has retained its traditional layout of several rooms arranged around a central bar. You can be assured of a warm Yorkshire welcome here. There are five handpumps mostly featuring Yorkshire brewed ales, including Leeds Best and a house beer from Brown Cow. Food is high quality and although not cheap, is reasonably priced for what it is, with most main dishes priced around the £mid-teens. The menu is interesting, variable and should have something on there for everyone and may include the likes of venison, pheasant, various fish options as well as vegetarion choices, and all come with a good selection of vegetables. Highly recommended.

Stopped here on a bank holiday walk with the dog. Dogs allowed in beer garden and in bar, but not restaurant. Lovely and old timey/quirky. Garden is beautiful with established plants and many tables and chairs. The session ale is great.

I almost don't want to review The Chequers Inn at Ledsham for fear of being unable to get a table. It's a true hidden gem .... My husband and I eat here regularly. It truly is faultless ..... It's a beautiful old fashioned pub in a beautiful location. Sitting outside in the garden in summer under the gazebo, or inside in the winter with real fires .... The food is always delicious, the service so friendly .... We have eaten our way through the menu and have loved it all. The crab and prawn timbale, the perfectly cooked steaks, the outstanding Sunday roast, wonderful cheesecakes, the awesome cheeseboard. I cannot recommend this place too highly. Love it ....

Julie Pan fried Goats cheese salad. Bed of rocket, tasteless beetroot/ chestnuts and cheese wasn’t even warm. At £12.95 this was an expensive disappointment.

We called in on Monday and had a fabulous family meal. It’s just a short detour from the A1 and was on our way back home.

Nine of us gathered from South Cheshire, Liverpool, Huddersfield, York, Helmsley and Perth (Australia) to take mothers out for Mothers Day - we were in a separate room up stairs, the food was great and our waitresses could not have done more for us.

We visited with a friend for Friday lunch. We had booked a table, which I strongly advise as when we arrived at 1 pm the car park was full and it was busy.

I’ve visited the Chequers several times now and found the food to be excellent. This is a cosy atmospheric good old English pub and I’ve read, one of the oldest in West Yorkshire.

We came here for a meal after a walk, as it mentioned they welcomed dogs and we had two. We were welcomed in, some of the staff made a fuss over the dogs and it was no problem.

I live in pontefract and I mymust admit the chequers is one of my fave country pubs to drive out to. I visited today randomly after a walk (carry) with my 2 year old daughter round fairburn ings was cut short. Not many pubs open at 11am these days so it was very much appreciated as we had 45 minutes to kill. I must disagree with a previous reviewer I'd say this place is very child friendly, the lady behind the bar went to get some crisps more suited to my 2 year old that were not behind the bar and the young lady who was also on came and chatted to my daughter. Sometimes you feel places think kids are a hindrance but we'd were nothing but made very welcome. I had a pint of the Leeds pale which is always on form all the ales are always well kept in my experience.

Four of us had lunch. Ver polite staff but the food was tasteless but huge quantities. My spicy squash nut soup was neither spicy or tasty Too watery ! My tomato risotto was equally tasteless. My partner had pitta bread which too hard, left to warm up in the microwave for too long I presume, with beetroot humous. The humous was swett as too much beetroot was mixed unto the humous. Our friends had meat dishes and the cooking was not up to standard ,. Very quiet location and very old pub but the food was a let down. No complaints about the quantity. More quality with good cooking and less quantity would have been good. We went with a lot of expectation and were disappointed

I took a walk to the bakery to see if they supplied fresh bread. I checked the opening hours and when I arrived it was closed. Wasted journey. Looks a nice place from the outside though.

We’ve just been to the art gallery café for lunch we won’t be going back. They sell scones but they’ve run out of jam What kind of business can’t even organise going to the shop and getting a pot of jam. Leeds city council should be ashamed of themselves.
