Chennai Dosa in Kingston upon Thames

I ordered takeaway using their own website not "Uber eats or Deliveroo" and when I arrived there after 1 hr to collect my order, Chef and other lady working there were extremely rude saying that online order system is not working. He didn't have the Tablet Powered "ON" even and kept on saying that 3rd party company called Fusion manages this like they will come and put power to the Tablet even. He kept on arguing and at one point wanted to have a fight and was very aggressive !! Then he called owner who said, we don't manage so I need to call their 3rd party company who I have no number as email comes from their address and at the bottom it says, "Contact Chennal dosa New malden". It was a very BAD EXPERIENCE. In normal world, restaurant would apologise and will call around to check and offer me refund or ask to wait while they can prepare food. It was 1:30 pm and my elderly parents were left without lunch which we ordred at noon. Food HYGIENE RATING IS "3", which explains how CHEF came out with same clothes and without washing his hand. I would highly recommend avoiding this restaurant and chain like a PLAGUE. It's dirty and run by thiefs who just want to grab your money and don't know how to speak with a customer who is paying their bills!!

I usually go for idli and dosa here. I find the food to be fresh and authentic. The prices are great .

Was good few years ago it had a excellent breakfast buffet but now it has gone down the hill. We went with family for breakfast buffet which had horrible sambar

I had an extremely disappointing experience at Chennai Dosa, New Malden. The customer service was absolutely terrible. The staff, including the owner, were incredibly rude. The owner, in particular, spoke in a very unprofessional and disrespectful manner, which was shocking and completely unnecessary. It’s rare to encounter such poor service, especially in a place where you expect some level of courtesy. This was my first and definitely my last visit. I will not be recommending this restaurant to anyone. There are plenty of other places with better food and, more importantly, better customer service. Avoid this place if you value a pleasant dining experience.

Very bad service ::. I went for the Non veg buffet… Chicken curry and mutton curry was like “rasam” soo watery… Plus few other veg curry’s… Also I hated … the owner keeps walking up n down looking at your plate to see how much you eating and etc. Very uncomfortable… will not recommend at all.

We ordered take away Maysoor Masala Dosas for dinner.( Sunday 15-9-24)We brought the food home and tried to have dinner with our guests. We found our Dosas are missing the masala potato filling in our Dosas Immediately we called and told them . Then they replaced the who meal. We had to go and pick up the dosas. But they were good enough to replace the plain Dosas with right masala Dosa. Want to thank the gentleman who politely helped us to sort our dinner. Thank you Satisfied customer.

By far the worst branch of chinnai dosa in UK. High time the management does something or else people will stop visiting other branches. Went inside for the weekend buffet and saw that all items were empty except for pickle and yogurt. When I asked for the buffet food, they made me wait for 45 mins without the food being refilled. Several others were seen licking on pickle while waiting for the food. The waiter was seen running helter shelter unable to handle the chaos. Absolute shambles, sorry. I just had to walk out.

I've been going to Chennai Dosa in New Malden for probably 5 years now (not the Woking one, I can't stand that place). I'm white British but went to India 20 years ago. Ever since I've been cooking south Indian food at home and likely eat Indian food far more than any other cuisine. Yes I can eat it 3x a day and often do. What I miss most about my culinary experience in India is south Indian food. I love the tamarind and spice, the smell of curry leaves and the classic thali. Thali's are great because you don't have to think. You get about 6-8 different dishes, with each one usually being different to the other in a nice little pot and the one(s) you like the most, you can have refilled at your pleasure. No fuss, no head scratching, no depending on a waiter to take an order. Just you the food and your friend(s). It's not common to find thali buffets in the UK. Most places advertising a thali are more restaurant based with prices to match, with usually only 4-5 small dishes that you cannot refill. A thali should be a more relaxed way of dining and south Indian food should be relatively cheap. South Indian food is effectively beautifully flavored liquid with some veg that sinks perfectly into rice. There is nothing in it that should cost you £15 plus (unless containing meat). Most authentic Indian restaurants, especially south Indian/Sri Lankan ones, can be intimidating to non south Indians and especially the average Brit. Service is not their best strength. They don't have the US/UK culture. They're more like the French in this regard and you can find it hard to communicate with them because the staff don't speak very good English; but that's exactly what I would expect in an authentic South Indian restaurant. You can go to any number of BIR (British Indian Restaurants) and have the same menu or you can go off the beaten track and experience real Indian/Sri Lankan/ Tamil food. In all the food is authentic, tastes wonderful, costs almost nothing and I can eat as much as I want (although out of respect, I leave some for others). When I lived on the south coast, I used to drive up every other Sunday to have lunch. That's a 3 hours round trip. At times I've been every Sunday for months in a row. I go in, say hi to the staff, walk straight to the buffet, get my thali and bowls, fill them up with 6 different dishes, grab some fresh poppadoms (that aren't greasy and bitter), get some rice from the giant rice cooker and find a seat. They ask me if I want something to drink (well they used to, now they just bring it over without me even needing to ask) and I order three Uthappam's. Uthappam's are a nice crispy coated soft dosa batter pancakes, fried with onions. They actually come with the buffet. What part of that didn't sound like the perfect experience? l And what's more, you can get all of this for £10!!! They also make Dosa's, Channa Bathura, Gobi Manchurian and other authentic Indian food. Honestly the Gobi Manchurian needs more batter to soak up the sauce but I'm being fussy here. Their standard buffet dishes are: Samba, Dal Fry, Korma (real korma not the cream laden English BIR version), Spiced potatoes, Spiced cabbage Kara Kulaumbo ( a beautiful dark, tamarind/jaggery dish with wild turkey berries). And a rotation of other regional specialties. Some I like, some I don't. I don't want to write this review because I want the place to be left free for me lol The only reason I'm doing it is because the owner and managers, who I've come to know over the years, have asked me and I'm doing it to them as a favour. So don't come, I don't need the competition. Thanks. BTW some of the negative reviews are fair; but if you turn up at the right time (sorry not going to tell you when), you'll have all the buffet you can eat, a great table and one of the best casual and most delicious dining experiences in the world for £15 (food + drinks) in London. Find your lane, stay in it and let it become a regular eating destination. I still go at least once a month and it never fails to hit my craving for sour, sweet, salty, spicy crispy, aromatic, cuisine. Oh and eat with your fingers. Indian/Sri Lankan food always tastes better when you eat it with your hands.

Not good customer service, really disappointed

Very honest review- 1. Waited more than 1hr for food 2. Very poor customer service 3. No napkins on the table 4. Food was very oily- kothu and fish fry 5.we ordered masala Dosa, undercooked, not crispy and soggy and very less filling. 6. They served kothu with raitha( not the correct combination, it should be served with gravy) 7. Other customers that were there was also complaining but the staff didn't respond well. 8. Staff and customer service was not professional 9.Not very clean toilets. 10. When asked for water, the staff brought out just washed wet tumblers with a jug of water. Very poor...we were shocked. We will not be returning and will not recommend!

Eat here for 1st time & sadly not impressed. Staff seemed oblivious to customers, food presentation was poor, Dosa was not fresh & crispy but more like a soggy pancake, the chicken in the Thalia was bone rather than meat. Have eaten in other branches of Chennai Dosa before & they were way so much better. The gents toilet was not clean. I will not be returning here to dine again, sorry guys you have much work to do.

We visited Chennai Dosa, New Malden, few days ago for a quick lunch for a family of four. The place is clean, waiter was helpful and service was excellent. We ordered Medu wadas in the starter and combination of dosas inc masala dosaj, masala podi dosa and uttapam. All the dishes were tasty and spicy.

The Waiter Today at around 15.30/15.45 was really Helpful,plesant and polite. Went out of His way to assist me and take my order.

I had the vegan lunch buffet. The food was tasty but some items were too oily. The variety was great. Service was good. If they would reduce the amount of oil in the curries and vegetable stir-fries and add more spice, all would be perfect.

Very little mutton in the curry, less than 1/3rd of the container was meat, the rest was very liquid gravy. Definitely not worth the money. Also the Dahl was too hot for Dad to even eat.

Very disappointed,one of our orders was butter chicken curry,we paid £9.50 and only got 4 tiny pieces of dice chicken and the rest just sauce,very stingy for the price we paid!!! Yesterday I went to chennai dosa new malden branch and ordered 2 parotta and chicken chettinaadu curry. The kitchen door was open and the view I saw was very bad. When I asked who the staff was who served it, I got to know that it was Chennai dosa owner. The food is very bad.No one please go there to eat. Biryani is 3 days old. Got a bad experience from the owner.

Ordered Indo Chinese food, chicken fried rice, chicken fried noodles, chicken Manchurian and prawn Manchurian. Food was so fresh and tasty. Really yummy. Will definitely be ordering from there again.

Very disappointed, very bad quality food. Dosa batter was not fermented properly, high amount soda added which makes the dosa taste bitter, zero hygiene, I am wondering how come council has allowed them to continue, disappointed.

Well I don’t have any balls to say any negative about my favourite Chennai Dosa. The dishes are amazing over there specially (Plain dosa and Chicken Szechwan Noodles). I’ve already to my friends and family. Please visit and share your experience.

Another Edit: Food was great this time, just stick to south indian cuisine like Dosa etc. So bumped to 4* from 3*. Edit: I had given it a 5* after first visit. But over the years, the service has become slower, so will mark it 3*.

Unacceptable Conduct from Chennai Dosa Restaurant Staff. I recently placed an order through Delivero from Chennai Dosa and unfortunately had an incredibly unpleasant experience. Upon receiving my order, I discovered that all the items were missing. I promptly contacted the restaurant to address the issue, and to my surprise, the person on the phone not only insisted that I reorder and pay again for the missing items but also displayed a complete lack of customer service. When I questioned the rationale behind having to pay again for their mistake, the individual went as far as to issue threats, stating that my order would not be delivered. I have attached a photo of the all missing items to Deliveroo. It is disheartening to encounter such a lack of customer care, and I strongly believe that this incident warrants immediate attention from the management at Chennai Dosa. I have recorded the entire conversation as evidence of the unprofessional conduct during this interaction.

Abysmal south indian food. Sambar was too diluted and Vada & Idli was cold. Compare that with Saravana Bhavan or anywhere else and you’ll know the difference. Hope they fix this - happens to be the only place that opens before 11am.

During busy times, the buffet wasn't filled and it's a small restaurant with no spaces to move about. I wouldn't recommend a reservation because the area you'd get a reserved table would be a cramp place to eat.. I decided to buy food instead of a buffet. My ordered food came hot and on time however it doesn't seem to be recently cooked. Unfortunately I have to agree with other low starred reviews. This restaurant could have performed better for dining in.

Twice now the devilled potatoes in the container was 1/3 of the box which was the same as the mushroom manchurian. You get charged £8.50 which is alot of money for a palm of food

Absolutely disgusted. The two thalis were packed so badly the gravy was leaking inside the bags and my two car seats were destroyed and needs professional cleaning . What kind of idiots do you employ to pack bags.

So we order food today from this very place and got my veg thali complete ruined, they did not packed it nicely, hence dal, sabji, rasam was all in the plastic carry bag and not in the silver foill container. It was a complete mistake from restaurant, hence we called them and told everything and here comes the reply - "We cannot help in this contact uber eat " and cut the call. So my next step offcourse we contact uber for the refund, and next move is to send the pictures to all top food Vloggers, post all the pictures in all public platform, search engine, trip advisior and many more. Over the last couple of years the quality of the food has gone downhill. There is very little meat in most curries and dosa fillings are filled with onion.

Food is good. Delicious. But the waiting time is insane. Be prepared to wait for atleast 40 minutes for a dosa. Preference is given to Deliveroo orders over dine in.

One of the worst food ever had. We have ordered Vada, masala dosa, poratta,gobi 65, geera rice and tadka dal. Only vada is good and masala dosa is average. They don't know how to do north indian food. Mustered seed and jeera both in jeera rice and tadka dal.tadka dal don't have any flavor. I think chef is a blood pressure patient. No salt in tadka dal, jeera rice and gobi 65(is a disaster.nothing is there in that 🙏🏽🙏🏽 just raw gobi) Poratta is good in shape and layer but no salt 🙄🙄.

One of the worst takeaways I’ve ever had! We usually order from Motspur Park Tandoori because their food is top tier but they were closed so we thought we’d try Chennai Dosa. We ordered a mutton curry, some chappattis, a chickpea dish and a couple of other dishes. The mutton curry had one piece of mutton which was basically a bone piece with less than a teaspoon of meat. Is that what I paid £7 for! The chickpea curry tasted bad and the chapatti was like cement. The only thing that was nice was paratha. All I can say is sort out your curries! And don’t take takeaway customers for granted by giving them less than what they paid for. It’s safe to say I’m never ordering from here again! 👎🏾

UnpleasantDining….! I had an extremely disappointing experience at Chennai Dosa, New Malden restaurant today (30/09/2023 -2 pm ) afternoon. My family and I decided to opt for the lunch buffet, but to our dismay, the food pots were consistently empty, and despite waiting patiently, they were not refilled promptly. Frustrated, I turned to the menu and ordered à la carte items - bhatura, chana masala, and kothu Porotta. However, our ordeal didn't end there. The bhatura was drowning in oil, and the chana masala they served had a pungent smell, clearly indicating spoilage. We immediately brought this to the attention of our server. He replaced the gravy within minutes, but to our disbelief, it was the same spoiled chana masala. Despite our polite complaints, the server adamantly denied any mistake and even tried to argue with us. His response was shocking; he claimed that different people have different tastes, implying that our dissatisfaction was subjective. Moreover, he arrogantly suggested that we could file a complaint with the council, insinuating that they had dealt with numerous complaints before. “We’ve been receiving numerous complaints about our food. Interestingly, when the council officials inspect, the cashier assures us that everything is fine, despite the registered complaints against them. Somehow, this reassures us, bringing a sense of satisfaction amidst the ongoing issues. 😜😄”

Disappointing Dining 😡😡😡😡🤨🤨🤨😣😣😣😣😣😣😣😣 My recent visit to Chennai Dosa in New Malden was an incredibly disappointing dining experience. We ordered Chana Batura and the accompanying curry, but it turned out to be a culinary disaster. The curry was immediately off-putting due to its unpleasant odor, which hinted at spoilage. Sadly, the taste confirmed our suspicions, as the flavors were completely distorted and unappetizing. To make matters worse, the service was extremely slow and unresponsive. When we finally managed to bring our concerns to their attention, they were unapologetic and seemed uninterested in addressing the issue. What was most frustrating was that instead of acknowledging their mistake, the staff member we spoke to kept arguing with us and even suggested that we complain to the council, claiming they had received multiple complaints with no action taken. This experience left a lasting negative impression, and I have no intention of returning to Chennai Dosa anytime soon. I strongly advise against ordering the Chana curry if you decide to dine there.

The chola batura was too oily and the chicken noodles were okay. The curry for the chola batura was below my expectations. Rest all is nice.

IceCream was missing in the Falood that I ordered. Last time they had sent a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

Ordered online on their website but when I called to check on order, they made me talk to 3 different people. Dosa, Idli, Vada were good. Biriyani, Manchurian were stale. Hence the 2 Star. Stick to Tiffin items.

Unfortunately not the greatest Chennai Dosa!. Although the menu is vast, the options are still a bit limited, and service needs to Improve. Had to ask 3 times for water. The paneer 65 recipe is not the right flavours. The amount of filling in the Dosa was very small, and had to ask for extra chutney regularly. Sadly Disappointing.

I ordered a breakfast thali. But the sweet which was supposed to come with the thali was missing. I paid 11.25 for the thali and the item is missing and the packaging was also very bad the sambar was leaking from all side all over the food. I need my refund for the sweet part

Biryani was pathetic, and it was not fresh It was reheated and the rice become cakes and not edible. Egg is old and become rubbery.

Great meals here on multiple occasions. NB this evening I watched another customer order the wrong thing, even after the staff member checked, (Dosa without potato) and then lie about what he had said and threaten the shop with a bad review. He left without paying and threatened the member of staff. Any negative reviews from other users today that are related to this should be considered in this context.

Amazing south indian food. This place never disappointed us. We have been going there from last 6 years and the quality of food is remain fantastic, never get bored to go there. We are vegetarian, and they have great range of vegetarian food. We had their dosas (great variety of dosas), idli, medu vada, kothu, indo-chinese all are so delicious. Their falooda is also very good. Their Filter Coffee is top notch! We do love breakfast buffet on weekends too, each and every dish is great in taste. Staff is friendly and lovely. Highly recommended for a south Indian food lovers.

We tried Dosa, mendu vadai mango lassi, honestly the food was very delicious and the chutney with dosa was too good. The staff was also amazing and friendly, and clean as well.

The waitress was rude. Inspite of telling her that the parotta that I was served was half cooked for breakfast she didn't say or do anything about it. Then when she saw me taking a bite from my husband's breakfast thali she charged us for two breakfast thali. The taste of the thali was also so bland that we couldn't even bother to take or eat for extra they charged us. Atleast provide good food, if you want to charge people. Definitely not coming back or recommending anyone. But I will make sure to tell people I know, not to go here, unless they want to experience bad food and people.
