Chef Lu’s Chinese Restaurant in York

My experience here was really good. The service was quick and I thought the food tasted amazing!

Customer service is horrible. Not friendly but irritable when you spoke to her and asked for the drink and rice. The potion is quite small. Disappointing.

Hands down the best Chinese food in York

The 25-pound fish was all served as side dishes, and the fish was not that big; the salt-and-pepper shrimp was really not tasty, and the shrimp meat was completely covered in starch.

Tastes like pre-cooked food and poor service

the food wasn’t nice it took so long to cook even tho there was barely anyone in the restaurant and I don’t recommend going there and the service is rubbish I went to the toilet then the kitchen was dirty and clean and had black stuff on the food

The woman who served me had a bad attitude. When she provided us with the food, she put the dish far away from me, and very close to my friend's area on the table. But she should put the dish in the middle of the table. Do you agree with me? I am her customer, not her enemy. The food I ordered did not cook properly, and not as well as I expected to be. I went to the toilet at night 5 times. I am not sure whether I had food poisoning from this restaurant..... I hope the woman servant can improve her attitude to all the customers, since we are there to eat her food, but NOT to suffer from her poker face and bad attitude. Thanks.

This star goes to the waitress with short hair who was terrible. I have never experienced such bad service. The three of us ordered a spicy hot pot and two other dishes. She remembered it wrongly and gave us a spicy hotpot. We told her that we ordered spicy hot pot, but she said in a very mean tone: You are wrong, and our dishes will not be returned or exchanged. Then she turned away to do other things and ignored us. We were so sure that we made no mistake when ordering, we didn't even know there was Malatang. At the same time, we also feel that we can eat Malatang directly, but the principle is to declare that it is not our mistake. So after she served other customers, we told her what the whole process was like. As a result, her attitude was very, very aggressive and she said angrily: What do you want to do? I was stunned by this sentence, and I said, what do I want to do... She said: Didn't you say that I made a mistake, so what do you want to do? ! ! ! Then after she finished speaking, it turned out! Turn around and walk away! The aunt who was traveling with me had a very good temper. She originally wanted to eat Malatang, but in the end she said, let’s change the dish. After the waitress agreed to change the dishes, she told us that there would be no charge for the spicy hotpot. We really feel that it is very baffling. We paid for the spicy hotpot we ordered. We didn't eat the spicy hotpot that you made the mistake of and returned the dish. Why did you declare that you would not charge for it? I never heard her say a word of apology during the whole process, and she kept responding to our questions with an attitude of wanting to quarrel...

It’s not delicious, not fresh enough, and the price is not friendly.

Some of the food is good, but sometimes they aren’t. When things go wrong, the staff and the lady boss never admit their mistakes and become very mean.

My favourite restaurant in York. Amazing, authentic Chinese food at a very reasonable price.

cheap lidl type food chips were definitely cheap frozen the curry sauce was the maysan brand very overpriced the waitress struggled to understand english when taking our order

Unbelievable Chinese food! Affordable prices!!!

Been here a couple of times and like this place , good portion sizes and quality of food , some downsides to this place - can get busy at peak times so be prepared to wait and the service can be slow , can get expensive but overall very good experiences we have had and would recommend the salt and pepper platter

Surprise gem! Don't judge a book by it's cover. On the outside this looks like a bog standard takeaway but this little unassuming place serves some of the best Chinese food in York. You know the kind of fish & chip restaurant that has naff decor from the 70's but is always packed with pensioners because they serve a damn good fish & chips? This place is kinda the Chinese equivalent, it's stuffed with Chinese students, the decor/service is nothing to write home about and the concept of allergies & veterinarians/vegan is probably a little alien to them... but they serve damn good Chinese food.

Authentic and really delicious Chinese food!

This has to be the best by far, and we have eaten a few. Authentic food, not your take away type . The service was good, meals served piping hot, freshly cooked. The taste was something else, never tasted a sweet and sour pork like that before. Very reasonable for the amount of food . The chef should be applauded.

Excellent authentic Chinese food. This isn't exactly what you would expect for a UK Chinese and they serve up much more authentic fair here. No cash but you can pay using bank transfer. Servings are huge as well. My only complaint is that I wish the 地三鲜 had more eggplant and less potato. Still some of the best I have had outside China!

Nice Chinese restaurant. I having dinner in this restaurant every month. I like 'Fry Pig Intestinal' and sweet and sour pork.

Lovely place with amazing food and generous portion sizes. Staff were kind and attentive. Will definitely be returning when in York again.

Food was really good and we got loads of it. You could probably share one main dish between 2 people easily, but we didn't. This place is cash only, I had to run off and get some cash from walmgate shops. Not a large restaurant so very relaxed in there. Loads of different drinks to try here. For 2 people I think total bill was £40 ish with sides, drinks and starters and we couldn't eat any more food.

Remember to bring cash! No card machine we went.

We dined at this restaurant on the 02-06-22, for starters the wrong meal was served not what I ordered!. The main meals came out without the rice which arrived once we more of less finished the meal. Was totally disappointed at the service provided this evening will not be going back in this life or the next.!!!

Ordered a takeaway on the evening of March 25th, 2022. I was told it would be a 30 minute wait by the lady behind the counter. The behaviour of the lady behind the counter was rude, unpleasant and her customer service skills was very poor. The way she spoke to me was disrespectful and acted like I was bothering her. I will not be returning to this place only because of the lady behind the counter. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

went on 12 th March and It was bad. my food went to the wrong table and then the waitress tried to give me there food and fished out all the bits that they ordered to try to hide it. she asked if I would like special noodle instead of the plain one I ordered but then told me I WOULD HAVE TO PAY THE INCREASED price difference , even though it was there mistake.I said no and then she spent 5 mins fishing the bits out letting my food get cold in the process. SHAMBLES. Then we were sat by the door and there was a very angry man huffing and shouting because his order took 1 hour . he was very intimidating and it was awkward . On top of this there was a family having a domestic too. OVERALL experience bad . Chef LU sort this out !

If you want authentic Chinese, I mean duck blood & gizzard authentic. This has to be the best place to go in York. I had the best salt & pepper ribs I've ever had & beef noodles 🍜. Next time I'm going back for the sipcy frogs legs. I love this place & I would definitely recommend that you go 🙂.

Called in at this take away. Yesterday 5th December for. A meal and i was really surprised at the quality and taste and the portion size was a very filling one too.. i will go there again very soon

Tiny restaurant but busy, mostly serve local. Staff is friendly on the day. Good taste. Huge portion and value price. The only downside is hard to find parking spots. Recommend from friends and now Will be returning. Keep it up.

Restaurant prices, even if it's a takeaway...... that being said, the quality is outstanding. Friendly staff as well. One of the best tasting Chinese meals experienced outside of mainland China. A real gem 😋😋

A different experience..... communication difficult .....rice and chips appeared before starters ....portions really generous hence we over ordered a lot of wasted food once we overcame language difficulties .....some of our group ate very little others enjoyed meal

This is a hidden gem, food is amazing, cash only so take cash. Staff are lovely. Definitely worth a visit if in York.

We ate here last night after trip advisor reviews. It is a tiny restaurant, and you could be forgiven for thinking it is a takeaway, however, the food is absolutely delicious and lacks the msg and sugariness of anglicised Chinese food. The lamb with coriander was exceptional, with soft, perfectly pink lamb and lots of flavour. A warning about the portion sizes - they are enormous.

Mainland Chinese cuisine. Not to be confused with the staple “made for English palete” fare.

Food was good but they gave us are mains first and starter's when reminded. Slightly overpriced for cafe standards

Very tasty food, good portions, with a brief appetizer and fruit inclusive. However, 4s because I am in agreement with other posters, it is a bit expensive. Rice seems to be extra, this Mapo doufu, rice and large juice costing £12.

This is a REAL chinese... dont come looking for sweet and sour chicken and rice. You will get hot pot dishes. Blood duck pudding. Beef shin. Roasted fish. Amazing food

I was disappointed when we visited the restaurant they had no curry dishes I was really looking forward to a lovely meal like we had visited previously

My son went with some friends and he raved about the lamb and spring onions... We went at 6pm on a Tuesday...I had rung in, and it was crazy busy when we got there, there was about 8 tables and 2 outside?? All were full. Service as expected for how busy it was. Which was fine. There was a wait for the food, but it was so worth it... If you want refined dining, don't bother... as it's a small cosy dining room, one unisex toilet, around the back, all the restaurant sounds, from the chatter to the woks getting tossed about. All the food I ordered was hot, as soon as it was cooked the dishes came out, one by one. By the time we left there was ppl queuing outside. One group had sent a scout ahead, to reserve a table...🤣 The food is amazing, the flavours are all well balanced. Definitely off again..if anyone can tell me what hotpots I should order...as I saw these on other tables..🤗

Wow! I never enjoyed my food as much as at Chef Lu's! Party of 3, we had lamb, beef, prawns, pork an many more and every single dish was EXCELLENT. It was genuinely the first time I was left speechless after having a meal in a restaurant. Definitely not an average Chinese restaurants and I will definitely be coming back!

Don't expect Sweet and Sour Chicken Balls here! This is a snall restaurant and takeaway that sells proper Chinese food. And that food is excellent! The chef is great so the food looks and tastes terrific. The problem is that it is just not big enough for the number of people passing through (90% of Chinese origin) so it can get a bit cramped. Nevertheless, if you like real Chinese food then I'd recommend it highly.

I was really looking forwards to visiting this place. Unfortunately it was the worst food i have ever had eating out. The service was poor, but the food was awful. I hope this was a one off as i have heard good things.

This place is so good I hesitated in writing this review. I should really be keeping quiet about it. Rich banquet food, with what I can only assume is a more authentic Chinese style than I am used to. But all the tastier for this. Staff friendly and welcoming, into a very Chinese, Chinese restaurant.

Not the experience I expected from a Chinese in York. Very authentic didn’t even know what fried rice was. Check the menu before you go. Won’t be returning!!!

Went with a friend who has wanted to try their food. The restaurant was clean but a bit cramped. Food was ok and tasty, staff were friendly but had to ask a few times for cutlery. Would suggest booking a table otherwise the waiting time is quite long.

Best Chinese restaurant in York!!!

My partner and I just ordered takeout from here. Took two and a half hours for the food to be ready. Got our order wrong and made a dish I can't eat because I'm vegetarian and it contains meat, but insisted that we pay for this extra dish anyway. Ended up overpaying £8 for food we hoped we'd get a discount for because of the insane wait. Won't be coming back.
