Nice spot, fairly standard pub/bistro menu, very friendly staff. Food arrived in very good time, the fish on the fish and chips was especially decent (and I'm a regular fish and chips eater). Well worth a visit

Great service, plenty of choice. I would return. Thanks for the extra you did for the 70th birthday we were celebrating. one small thing is that we came in the door that said restaurant and function room. when we entered the restaurant we were told how did you get in and told to go over to the the other door. That door should be closed or a sign to indicate to use the main restaurant door.

Excellent meal , first class service lovely atmosphere. I'm very glad our friends chose to meet up here worth a revisit when we are in EDINBURGH again. good selection on the menu and freshly cooked.

Lamb shoulder best I’ve ever tasted. Wine great, Crumble dessert also excellent. Friendly service, easy access, plenty of free on-site parking.

Stopped here for breakfast before going into Old Town. It's an ultra clean and stylish restaurant with a calm, relaxing atmosphere. The food was scrumptious with superstar presentation. I recommend going during off hours before the rush hour if you want to enjoy the wonderful five star peaceful zen-like vibe this restaurant has to offer. I say this because I noticed that the place gets packed later on in the day as people wait impatiently for tables and parking. Luckily, I was exiting at just the right time. It's a locals hot-spot located around a fairly busy residential area of Edinburgh yet outside of the nerve-wracking traffic area of Old Town.

Great food, service and atmosphere.... However as a party of 13 for a special birthday, having to pre- order starters and mains was faff, what happened to going to a restaurant, looking at a menu and ordering from a menu, prices charged were not the prices advertised when we made the reservation +10% Overall good experience

We booked the Charwood for my Husband's 80th birthday. We arranged a buffet for 50 people, which was well received and nicely laid out on a long table, easily accessible in the room. The staff were lovely and eager to help us with pre drinks for our guests. We were able to set up some background music through Bluetooth. Nothing was too much trouble and we had a lovely evening. 5-10pm. We would definitely recommend booking with The Charwood.

Had family visiting from Wales and they were staying in Mortonhall campsite not far from this restaurant so seemed like the obvious choice. We were not disappointed. 5 of us all had drinks, starters and mains. My son said the calamari starter was the best he had ever tasted. Mains were a mixture of steak pie, scampi, soup and lamb. Presentation was spot on and the meals themselves we could not fault. Obliging staff and a lovely setting. We will definitely return.

Family big birthday meal for 16, age range 4 to 70. Some family members hadn’t seen each others for years, some were new members and hadn’t met everybody. We used the Balfour Suite which met our needs in terms of space but would have been even better with more daylight (it was a beautiful day but we couldn’t see much of it unlike the main restaurant or other function suite). Booking couldn’t have been easier - all done on line / via emails although I’m sure you could do it in person / by phone if you preferred. Ordering food in advance meant the kitchen can be prepared. With hindsight I’d ask for a drinks menu to spare the staff the ordeal of trying to get a drinks order out of the initial chaos. No one got lost getting there, it was accessible by public transport and for someone with a knee injury and stick and the toilets were close by (also handy for the children). We were all able to sit at a large table together and have 2 small tables for the children to draw / play with Lego (we brought supplies). We were able to move around between courses and interact. It was a very relaxed and happy occasion. Everyone enjoyed the food - it’s a good menu with something for everyone including a vegan and vegetarian. The children were well catered for even if they were too excited and busy to eat much - the milk shakes and ice cream sundaes went down well, the fresh fruit (provided on request to help them get their 5 a day) not so much! Big parties (even if nice which I hope were) are a nightmare as I know from personal experience! Charwood’s staff managed our rather chaotic gathering with good humour, friendliness and professionalism throughout. Staff are a business’s greatest asset. Charwood’s are gold medal standard.

We have a lovely dinner for a family event, (23 of us) in the function room. Everyone enjoyed their meal and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Planning the dinner was made very easy and nothing was too much trouble. THank you to all the staff.

Superb lunch celebrating my father's birthday. Service was excellent and food delicious - thank you for making the event so enjoyable, we will be back.

Went here to celebrate a family members birthday, service was awful staff not helpful and was rude everything was an issue with the staff, they made us all feel unwelcome and that they did not want to serve our table of 17 people, their attitude was awful. Food was poor, fish was "swimming in oil", burgers were raw.... the attitude we got was "what would you like me to do about it" out of our party there was 1 child whose meal was last to arrive at the table 10/15 minutes after the adults were served! £400 on a meal that not one person enjoyed!! We have been here numerous times, sadly you can see this place is going down hill and we will not be returning, staff need to be trained in customer service as every member of staff lacked in it.

We tried the steak special - two portions of sirloin steak & chips and a bottle of house wine. The steaks were generous, cooked to perfection and the house wine was excellent. Finished off with a portion of cheesecake and lemon posset. Attentive staff followed my instructions to have a bottle of prosecco chilled on arrival. We will definitely be back to try other items on the menu.

Lovely food, good atmosphere and our table was near the window so plenty of room. Took a while to get any service but it was very busy so that's to be expected.

I can't say I'm happy about the service I got tonight. My Coca Cola was flat. I ordered a child's pizza, an adults pizza, a burger and chips. My child's pizza came out last and it was disgusting, so much so my child who loves pizza refused to eat it and my partner ended up giving her pizza to my son and daughter as they were hungry. She had 1 slice of her main course pizza as a result. I tried it and it was the worst pizza, dough was uncooked, hardly any sauce on the base. My local chip shop does better pizzas. Another member of the party I was with ordered a burger and it was raw. She returned it and was given another burger and was again raw,however did not want to complain again. It wasn't until after she got her 2nd burger back that I found out and noticed my burger was still pink. I hope for your sake I don't end up with food poisoning. The food quality of your award winning restaurant is severely lacking.

Ordered a charwood burger however it came with the plastic still on the burger. Which put us off our meal. Was disappointed as we had heard good things about the charwood. However the service was good

We had a great meal here on Saturday 10th of August, 4 adults and two pre schooler kids. The food was great and the pleasant family atmosphere was very relaxed. All the staff were professional, friendly and helpful. The management were attentive to our needs and addressed any requirements we had.

Sunday lunch, I’m a fan of lamb, is undoubtedly one of the best around. Perfectly cooked. Lovely staff. Plenty parking. What more could you want

Really disappointed by the food.. chicken and mushroom pizza with tinned mushrooms.. disgusting. The pizza base was like hard rubber. Really disappointed. Roast beef Sunday roast was ok but nothing special. Again really disappointing. The staff were really friendly and helpful. Just unfortunate with the food.

Highly anticipated Father's Day dinner, but very disappointed! A waitress with a tattoo behind her ear (that’s the only way to describe her since she doesn’t have a name tag). I didn't mind that she didn't smile at all, but she was very unfriendly when ordering. With such a service attitude, I can't understand why I was charged a discretionary service fee. BTW I don’t know if it’s a special recipe, but this is the first time I’ve tried bitter yorkshine pudding.

Said before I wouldn’t rush back - but then given gift vouchers ….. evening meal for two - fish and chips and steak and chips, two Eton mess, two pints of Guiness and two cocktails - just shy of £100. Small fish was large whale, steak was good and chips were good, Eton mess was bowl of ice cream with two buttons of meringue on top and fruity syrup in the bottom of the vase - each portion enough for two. Service was friendly and good. Overall OK - but still wouldn’t rush back !

Enjoyed a lovely wedding anniversary event at Charwood. Arrangements for family group of 21 - aged 8 to 78. Staff were so helpful - making arrangements and accommodating all our requests. Everything went to plan, with the help of amending timings slightly when it proved necessary. Room to eat, move about and to have some dancing. Altogether great venue for our special occasion! Thank you!

We was approached abruptly, the woman im assuming was the manager she was not happy to see us was very rude and not welcoming at all. I asked for garlic prawns as i can not eat uncooked prawns or cocktails due to allergy and got served a cold prawn cocktail. Food very bland way way too expensive for the type of food served. Our waitress was a lovely girl but do not recommend this place and will not be going back.

Haggis spring rolls were delicious. Battered haddock too much for me and the batter was quite thick. Left quite a lot of it. Staff were great - really helpful.

Visited for lunch while in Edinburgh for an appointment not far from here, we arrived and got a table without booking, friendly enough and pretty quick service. I had steak & ale pie with chips and veg, was ok but I’ve had better, pastry was far to flaky and just disintegrated as soon as you tried to cut it with a knife, I’ve never been a fan of the pastry cooked separate and placed on top of pie dish. My friend had the southern chicken burger, he commented it was a bit dry but was tasty enough. Would probably return as was handy location for where we were going and added bonus of there own car park but would get pizza next time as they looked pretty good.

We had a great meal. Lovely restaurant, meal was good (roast beef slightly tough). Service slightly slow. Overall very good.

The food was so much better quality in the past. Service just as slow as ever however. Been a customer for years but only because it is convenient, the steak used to be amazing. Now no longer so. A pity. Drinks menu filthy, andmy drink came with someone's hair on it and glass filthy. Eton mess had one tiny little meringue on it and was mostly just vanilla ice cream. New menu looks almost identical as the old one. One massive disappointing experience.

Have been many times with family and always enjoyed our meal and the experience. Came with friends who had not been before this time and later got a message saying how much they had liked The Charwood and that they would be visiting again.

Excellent food and service. I can highly recommend, we had a fab family gathering and will be back again as soon as we can. My son and I have celiac disease and cannot eat Gluten. They catered for our diets very well with lots of options too!

Anna was delightful throughout our meal, nothing was too much trouble. All the staff we spoke to seemed happy to help and served with a smile! I think you have some new regulars!

We came in last week for food and drinks and sat on the patio outside area. Food was very high quality and service speedy, especially considering how busy it was. Staff are lovely and smiley. Thanks to Anna for all your help. Lots of vegetarian options and a wide variety of choice for cold drinks. Will definitely be back.

Food was just ok. Portion size quite small for the price. Service efficient but with no smile. Probably wouldn't go back unfortunately, as one of us was very poorly after eating here.

Booked the Charwood for my mother’s funeral. The venue was the perfect size and the staff had set out the tables very well. The food was excellent and the staff were very attentive. We will return for dinner in the near future.

We loved it here. We went in on a Sunday afternoon. It was a little busy, but the waiting time was reasonable. My family and I all enjoyed what we had and already discussed going back to try some other dishes on their menu. We think they're not overly priced and the ambience was just right for our visit on a sunny day! PS, you have to book a table ahead of going there via their website.

we popped in for lunch and wished we hadnt. The food - haggis spring rolls with plum sauce was ' nice ' The steak pie with chips was ' nice ', the vegetable fajita was ok at the time, two wraps and a small portion of veg on a do it yourself basis which is fine, really poor value for money though. One of us ended up extremely poorly and had'nt had anything else to eat so can only attribute it to the food ( veg fajita). The service could have been with a smile, but was efficient. At these prices, would have expected a little more really. Maybe should have sat in the restaurant rather than the bar.

Enjoyed a family lunch at Charwood and found it to be a great place to go. The food is a great standard and very tasty and there’s a good choice on the menu - something for everyone. The staff are very friendly and helpful even in very busy times. Only mark off was the phone kept ringing and it’s very loud but other than that we all enjoyed our experience very much.

I hired the Pentland Suite to host my father's funeral tea. The room is bright and welcoming, tables were beautifully laid out and it was great to have the use of our own bar for refreshments. The buffet was plentiful and appropriate, samosas in particular were delicious. The staff and management were lovely, and very attentive, making us feel most welcome. An added bonus is that Charwood is easily reached from the funeral venue (Mortonhall) for guests unfamiliar with Edinburgh and offers easy access afterwards to all the routes out of Edinburgh. Would thoroughly recommend as a group gathering location.

Everything went well for a hhandicapped old deaf man and his wife. The booking was made with a charmingly clear voiced lady. We were received in a friendly way and taken, as requested if possible, to a window table clear of noise. Service was prompt, attentive and welcoming. Courses came promptly, and were all delicious. The resuting bill was very reasonable, and I was kindly offered the chance to pay it at our table.. We will be back, soon. Thanks to all concerned for a deleightful 92nd birthday meal.

We had dinner here last night (20/3) I had the Caesar salad which I have had there twice before, this time it came without anchovies, still very tasty! When the manager approached to ask if we wanted anything else I commented that there were no anchovies and I was "devastated" obviously I was joking ,he took at as the joke it was and added that next time just remember to request then as they don't put them on automatically, I thanked him for this information, we ordered 2 coffees. When he returned with them he said they were on him to make up for the anchovies.... TOP service as I mearly made a comment not a complaint , the salad was delicious without them! My friend had macaroni cheese which she said was also delicious! We will be back and I will ask for anchovies 😊

Was there for a funeral reception. Other than us lot there were few customers. It looked very spacious and up market.

Very relaxing atmosphere and great ser ice

Intriguing restaurant, very family friendly, food is OK and decently priced. Hamburgers chargrilled, real good. A few typical local dishes, also good, including dessert. The ambience is nice, tables are well spaced, the decor is from 20 years ago - not modern. Food while ok, not top. We didn't try the pizzas. The kofta was the worst, but still good. Service is OK, they don't force you to tip like in the city centre - thank you!

There's a nice feeling to this place. The food is plentyful and reasonably priced.

Food was reasonable. Thai chicken curry was just a vegetable curry with lots of cauliflower which I hate, with a few pieces of chicken added. Had the meal changed for steak pie which was not much better, the steak was stringy. The desserts were OK. Soft drinks are expensive. Service was good. Overall I would say 5 out of 10.

Mother’s Day breakfast with family. Enjoyed it, thought the staff were really nice and would definitely go back. They were very very busy so there were a couple of items missing from the plates but all was sorted very quickly and without any fuss from us or the staff.

We booked the conference room for one of our Regional Assembly events on Wednesday 6 March. We arrived early to set up and check the equipment. Sheryl let us in and made sure everything was up and running before our event started. Brilliant venue in a great location. An Edinburgh venue with parking and just off the bypass. Food was great.
