Charwood Grill in Edinburgh, City of

We booked on short notice and arrived early. Staff attentive and food was nice. Unfortunately the 3 women with 5 or 6 children shouting and jumping around whilst they ignored their behaviour ruined our visit. The kids were in the toilet shouting and running about which was hazardous i can imagine with the staff going back and forth with hot food and drinks. The 3 entitled parents who thought this was acceptable are apparently regulars with the kids acting like this on every visit. This would make me think again about booking here with family but no fault of place or staff.

We were well looked after, with care taken over allergies advised in advance and suggestions made for variations on the menu. Thank you for an excellent meal.

Fine apart from the Eton Mess sundae - short of edible fruit and merangue. The currents were not mentioned in the description.

Service was friendly and food was very nice - only let down by me receiving a well done steak in stead of medium rare - turned out my wife had mine - this was not the chef's error, and it was ok. By the time the sauce was poured and we had started, we didn't feel like swapping incase anyone was thinking that.

Nice atmosphere. Staff were polite and very attentive. We both enjoyed our fish and chips which arrived super quickly and was very tasty. Easy parking which makes it accessible to one of us who uses a walking stick. This is one of our favourite places for a casual meal out.

Disappointed to see the menu has been reduced significantly and vegetarian options are now very sparse. Pizza was dry and tough.

First time visit in many years and still great. Our guests were there for very first time and thoroughly enjoyed the meal.

The choice in the menu was great, there was something to suit all three of us. When it arrived the food was excellent. The service was also excellent, the young lady was very pleasant and seemed genuinely interested in our opinion of the food. It was busy but we were able to have a conversation without being distracted by noise from other tables. Convenient to A 720 and good parking facilities. Will be back soon.

Used to like this place, but when I saw a dog up on the seat, on its unwiped bum, it turned my stomach. Doubt I'll be back.

The Charwood was booked as a new venue for our annual The Arthur Ransome Society (Scotland) - TARS - Birthday Lunch and AGM. The small meeting room was an excellent venue, the service from staff both before the event and on the day was fantastic, and the food was excellent. Everyone thought the food was great and reasonably priced. Apart from the dishes listed in the review, the pan fried salmon was lovely and the various sundaes out of this world! Definitely 5 stars. I suspect we will be booking it again next year.

This is the first time at Charwood. Booked on recommendation for a birthday lunch. There were 3 of us. We were greeted and taken to our table which was by the window but seemed a little out from most tables. Service was good at the start, and the food was excellent. We opted for the Sunday roast (one beef, one lamb, one veggie) we all enjoyed our meals. We also had dessert and coffee. The service went a little downhill after we had finished our dessert and coffee we waited and waited for a member of staff to come to our table. We ended up having to get up and go and ask for the bill twice. We would go back but will ask for the bill at the same time as ordering coffee!

We had a lovely family meal. Everyone said how good the food was. Charwood had lovely decor and the waiters and waitresses went out of their way to be helpful. Good value for money too. Will definitely return.

Booked the Balfour suite for a family birthday lunch, great food, great service and suited ages from 80 to 2yrs old

Had a very nice dinner at the Hogmanay event, busy but the service was great.

The food & service was very good. A good selection on the menu. I've been to a few celebration birthday meals here and they cater well for large groups (14+). Would definitely recommend. Very reasonably priced too!

My elder sister had no problem organising a table for twelve people aged between 9yrs and 80yrs !! The eldest gentleman sadly suffers from Parkinson's Disease mixed with Lewy Bodies and he has to be moved about in a wheelchair which was not a problem for the restaurant staff. I can't thank them enough for their courteous service towards my brother-in-law and the staff also provided Christmas colouring-in sheets and crayons for the children. The food was delicious and served equally politely from the eldest down to the youngest - "thank you" !!

The restaurant was not clean. My chair was stuck to the floor when I went to move it, the table was sticky with previously spilled drinks and we had to return two glasses of wine and two cups as they were also dirty. The toilets smelled and the floors and woodwork were dirty and worn. Shabby and sticky overall. Service was excellent. The food was mediocre and the burgers were tasteless. My chips were undercooked. The salmon looked good and the portions were generous. Wouldn’t rush back.

Mostly good but sat beside 2 tables large parties and it was noisy. Perhaps tables for 2 could be in a slightly separate part of the restaurant.

Disappointed wasn’t the word £170 no one came near you , reduced menu which no one told us was happening at this time of year, was a meal for my sons birthday want be back and a bit cardboard in pudding no apologie they just never charged for it 🤬

Wonderful restaurant, staff are always very welcoming upon arrival and the service provided is always excellent. The venue has a very warm and refreshing ambience, a perfect atmosphere to enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. The decor is also very vibrant and colourful which is a nice added touch. The food is second to none - very freshly cooked, filling and delicious. The ice cream sundaes for dessert are out of this world! Would highly recommend. Five Stars *****

Excellent food and staff Never disappointed each time we visit

This was our annual family Christmas gathering. Menu choices pre-ordered. The service for our pre meal drinks was excellent. Meal served as planned and coped with delayed guests - food was to usual Charwood high standard. Flexibilty of timing of courses was helpful. Overall a great event for the family. The staff were excellent, the service and the food also. The function room provides a great atmosphere for a family event.

Yesterday we were served by Kirsty. She looked after us well even although the restaurant was busy. The food was delicious steak pie for me and my friends had chicken pie. I asked to swap the chips for the mustard mash and I'm glad i did it was great. Such an easy drive off the bypass to meet up. We will certainly be back.

Another great meal at Charwood Grill. Menu very good and food was excellent and served piping hot. On each course we were asked if the food was to our liking. We had superb service from Kirsty even though the restaurant was very busy. This is our favourite restaurant when we meet up and have never been disappointed. We will be back again for sure.

Very warm welcome - bar opened specially for us and lunch was served here although we had a table booked in the restaurant. Made it quieter and cosier. Andy went above and beyond what was required of him as our server. Will definitely return and recommend to others.

Attentive and cheery staff made our breakfast visit more enjoyable. Food was good. Surprised that there were so few customers as it is a comfortable venue. Maybe need to advertise more? Cafes in the area are always packed so why not offer traybakes and scones to get customers in. I only saw shop bought flapjacks and muffins on offer which didn't look inspiring.

Good reasonably priced fare. Great staff. I am always happy to eat here.

Post funeral buffet lunch for 50 ran like clockwork. Staff were both pleasant and efficient. Buffet was excellent and complimented by many guests. It reduced the stress and created a pleasant atmosphere for the bereaved. Well done to all the team.

We recently rented the room for our joint 50th '70's theme' party. The staff were so helpful and worked hard to make the evening an fab success. Everything was ready and without any stress or fuss. Thanks for helping us make wonderful memories. We will be back again soon

The food here is always lovely, and the staff are absolutely brilliant! Kirsten was our waitress today, and was an absolute sweetheart with our whole family, including a special needs family member. Thank you to the team for being fabulous!

Nice spot, fairly standard pub/bistro menu, very friendly staff. Food arrived in very good time, the fish on the fish and chips was especially decent (and I'm a regular fish and chips eater). Well worth a visit

Nice place to go for a dinner or Sunday roast. Excellent parking, nice and tentative staff. Everything was reasonably priced and food was great.

Very popular restaurant and it's obvious why it's well liked. They've a great menu and food is presented well.

Went on Thursday for the pub quiz, sat at the bar and was served by Beth. Top notch service, excellent selection of beers and whiskeys. Good quiz as well, very good variety of questions across a range of subjects.

Staff are all lovely, food was amazing

The service and food at Charwood is excellent. I booked one of Charwood’s function rooms for my family and friends to gather after my husband Stuart’s funeral. The arrangements were seamless. Mike and his team were very helpful and efficient and nothing was too much trouble, including playing our own music playlists and showing a video of our photographs on the TV screens. The waiting staff did a great job of regularly serving and topping up teas and coffees and taking the drinks orders. The feedback from guests about the buffet was very good. It is an excellent venue with plenty of parking. Highly recommend.

5 of us visited this restaurant for an evening meal. Service was great with friendly staff. A huge menu with plenty to choose from the food was plentiful and tasty. Dogs are welcome in the bar area, and staff kindly provide a drink and tasty treats for your pooch.

Food and service was great but £3.50 for a half pint of cola! That was the only downside.

Had dinner here this evening and it was lovely, we arrived and were greeted promptly with a very cheerful host then 2 minutes after sitting down we got asked if we wanted drinks which were brought again very promptly. Food was lovely and service was also good staff very friendly and attentive

This place obviously thinks it's upmarket with over priced out of town location food and drink, the staff are great and friendly.

We had a lovely meal provided by the friendly and efficient staff. It all provided a lovely atmosphere to celebrate our Ruby anniversary. By the end all of the 17 members in our party were complimenting the staff on the meal.

Great service, plenty of choice. I would return. Thanks for the extra you did for the 70th birthday we were celebrating. one small thing is that we came in the door that said restaurant and function room. when we entered the restaurant we were told how did you get in and told to go over to the the other door. That door should be closed or a sign to indicate to use the main restaurant door.

Very easily accessed with plenty of parking. Food good quality cooking with choice for everyone’s taste, using local produce. Important to book as it’s a very popular destination!

Attentive staff and excellent food.

Reasonable cooked brunch selection with so-so vegan options. No cereal breakfast options. Portions are generous and nicely presented offering good value. Ambience is pleasant with different kinds of seating to suit all needs. Service is patchy; some of the staff 'serve the food' with little warmth; one was super-friendly; one other (who claimed he was a manager) was downright rude. Good luck!

Attended reception after a funeral

Stopped in for lunch, had the soup Of the day (minestrone) and goats cheese focaccia roll. Absolutely delicious and ice cream sundae dessert 🍨 highly recommended

The restaurant was busy when we visited but all the staff were polite and attentive and our meal was paced excellently. The food was also excellent apart from the blackberry and apple crumble which was stodgy.

There were two funeral wakes on and we arrived 25 minutes early but they managed to accommodate us quickly. Service was good but we had to ask for water for the table and not offered it ? We both emptied our plates of fish and chips and the desserts were delicious. We asked for our bill which had service charge already added but we had to ask if we could pay at the table or go up to the desk to pay It’s a lovely place really enjoyed it.

Far to expensive for the actual food that you are paying for. Just as good quality food can be found at the Toby Carvery and Wetherspoons at a much lower price. Very unimpressed.

Stopped here for breakfast before going into Old Town. It's an ultra clean and stylish restaurant with a calm, relaxing atmosphere. The food was scrumptious with superstar presentation. I recommend going during off hours before the rush hour if you want to enjoy the wonderful five star peaceful zen-like vibe this restaurant has to offer. I say this because I noticed that the place gets packed later on in the day as people wait impatiently for tables and parking. Luckily, I was exiting at just the right time. It's a locals hot-spot located around a fairly busy residential area of Edinburgh yet outside of the nerve-wracking traffic area of Old Town.

Great food, service and atmosphere.... However as a party of 13 for a special birthday, having to pre- order starters and mains was faff, what happened to going to a restaurant, looking at a menu and ordering from a menu, prices charged were not the prices advertised when we made the reservation +10% Overall good experience

Wasn't overly impressed with this place. Definitely not for the price. It's just edging on being a bit too expensive for the quality of the food. Either up the quality or lower the prices. It wasn't bad by any means. I just can work out how people justify such an expensive menu for what amounts to pub grub. If your local it's definitely still worth giving it a try. I personally won't be back.

We booked the Charwood for my Husband's 80th birthday. We arranged a buffet for 50 people, which was well received and nicely laid out on a long table, easily accessible in the room. The staff were lovely and eager to help us with pre drinks for our guests. We were able to set up some background music through Bluetooth. Nothing was too much trouble and we had a lovely evening. 5-10pm. We would definitely recommend booking with The Charwood.

Excellent food and service When booking online why do you ask a second time for details of the reservation?

Had family visiting from Wales and they were staying in Mortonhall campsite not far from this restaurant so seemed like the obvious choice. We were not disappointed. 5 of us all had drinks, starters and mains. My son said the calamari starter was the best he had ever tasted. Mains were a mixture of steak pie, scampi, soup and lamb. Presentation was spot on and the meals themselves we could not fault. Obliging staff and a lovely setting. We will definitely return.

Family big birthday meal for 16, age range 4 to 70. Some family members hadn’t seen each others for years, some were new members and hadn’t met everybody. We used the Balfour Suite which met our needs in terms of space but would have been even better with more daylight (it was a beautiful day but we couldn’t see much of it unlike the main restaurant or other function suite). Booking couldn’t have been easier - all done on line / via emails although I’m sure you could do it in person / by phone if you preferred. Ordering food in advance meant the kitchen can be prepared. With hindsight I’d ask for a drinks menu to spare the staff the ordeal of trying to get a drinks order out of the initial chaos. No one got lost getting there, it was accessible by public transport and for someone with a knee injury and stick and the toilets were close by (also handy for the children). We were all able to sit at a large table together and have 2 small tables for the children to draw / play with Lego (we brought supplies). We were able to move around between courses and interact. It was a very relaxed and happy occasion. Everyone enjoyed the food - it’s a good menu with something for everyone including a vegan and vegetarian. The children were well catered for even if they were too excited and busy to eat much - the milk shakes and ice cream sundaes went down well, the fresh fruit (provided on request to help them get their 5 a day) not so much! Big parties (even if nice which I hope were) are a nightmare as I know from personal experience! Charwood’s staff managed our rather chaotic gathering with good humour, friendliness and professionalism throughout. Staff are a business’s greatest asset. Charwood’s are gold medal standard.
