Charlie's in Thanet

Nice sitting out area in sun by sea. Restaurant had run out of quite a few items on menu. My steak was OK hubby had mixed grill his steak was inedible as so gristly. Staff were wonderful though and charged cheeseburger price for mixed grill. Very helpful and friendly. Restaurant last orders 7.45pm think it was mainly due to it getting a bit rough in Margate later in evening.

Great location 1970s food. Just had chicken filet burger it was deep fried in batter in a soggy bun with crunchy chips bloody awful

Great place on Margate sea front! Was really reasonable and the staff were friendly. We had sandwiches, a kids meal and a few other bits and it didn't cost the earth

My family and I randomly chose this place for lunch and we were impressed with the quality of the service and the food. I was with my naughty nieces and the staff were very patient with their loud voices. Thank you!

Popped in on a nice warm afternoon for drinks and a cake on the outside terrace. We grabbed the only vacant table, this was dirty from as previous customer, lots of spilled sugar and liquid rings on the table. A young boy came to serve us, we ordered and he went away without doing anything about the dirty table. Service was quick, a young lady arrived with our drinks but forgot the muffin we ordered. The mess on the table was right in front of her, but again nothing was done. We drank our drinks without any sign of the cake, and when we called the lady over to pay we made a point of telling her not to charge for the cake, and we made a point of telling her that they had both ignored the dirty table. No apology for either was made, just a useless grunt and an embarrassed look. Not the first time we have suffered from bad service, but this time we have mentioned it here, as have numerous other folks in more recent reviews.

How do you choose from all the eateries in Margate? Maybe dial up Tripadvisor, as I did. So there I was, mid afternoon on a dodgy day, at Charlie's on the front. The rain had just stopped, so I took a risk, shook the water off a chair, and sat outside, sheltering in front of a bush from the wind. A long-haired, very young guy came out, maybe a student at school or university. What a lovely lad. So funny and with banter. He said the weather was changing so often he was out tipping the chairs up and down every five minutes. I ordered chilli and chips. And it proved very decent indeed. Plenteous amount of chilli, copious gravy. Really enjoyed it. Charlie's was the right choice. And it didn't even rain again till I'd finished.

This is the place to go if you want a proper English breakfast. Excellent food, and service, felt very very welcome here.

Appalling service rude staff bad management. Spent alot of money on food and bar . And was asked to leave table when prepared to spend same again going into evenining . Disgraceful never visit again

Was taken to Charlie’s by friends who live in Margate. Had a fantastic meal which catered for everybody very well. So much choice - from classic fish and chips, prawn cocktails and curries. We all loved it. Fresh ingredients, excellent service and good value. Thank you for a great evening!

Visited today with my partner and our two dogs sat outside and was served by the lovely Julie the other outside server's were very friendly and helpful too... ordered the chicken ceaser wrap with chips and salad... can honestly say the best one I have ever eaten.... Good food and friendly staff go a long way will definitely be back next time we are in margate 10/10

We visited Charlies again Friday evening & as always was not disappointed, the service is excellent as is the food. We both had the curry & they were delicious. Also their choice of music suits us & although it is in teh background, it isn't too intrusive.

we went here for breakfast , and evening meal the service is outstanding , as is the food, we went several times in the week we were in Margate. with breakfast you build your own and there is a lot to choose from. The main menu for other food offers a great range of food . all their food is cooked to order and of excellent quality .

Stopped here for lunch, wasn’t expecting too much from a place on Margate seafront but we were pleasantly surprised. We sat outside and although it’s next to the main road you don’t notice. Service was quick, but not rushed, all the ladies serving were lovely, brought iced water over for our dogs . Food was reasonably priced, nothing fancy but well made. The chef dropped my pizza so I had to wait a few minutes more than the rest of my table, but the staff member told us straight away what had happened and offered me a free drink. It was a lovely lunch and would recommend it.

Nice outside seating, warm welcome and good service. Food very good and good sized portions and plenty of chips [please other restaurants dont be mean with the chips!]

Charlie's was a superb find during our stay in Margate a couple of weeks ago. We popped in one lunchtime because I spotted peach melba on the menu, and that's a dessert I never say no to. We came back for dinner that evening and ended up returning twice more. Great food, generous portions and good value for money. Staff were wonderful too, they got to remember us during the course of the week. Friendly regular customers too, such as Fred.

We popped in for a quick snack but unfortunately the menu showed no gluten free options so I opted for a hot chocolate instead My husband ordered a toasted tea cake and a strong coffee The coffee was strong and the hot chocolate very creamy but the tea cake was very small

Lovely friendly welcome to this cosy little cafe on the seafront. Extensive menu of homemade food from fish and chips, to light bites to salads as well as ice creams and cakes. All freshly cooked, really tasty and plenty of it. Really amenable to preferences too. Great service and clearly popular with locals and holiday makers. Would recommend 100%.

Excellent breakfast. Instead of a set full English, you order and pay for each item individually. Don't let that put you off. It actually works out cheaper. The staff are super friendly.

Menu varied so booked with daughters, frustrating you couldn't reserve a table outside as with Woodys next door. I had the beef madras , was ok but far too much rice with small amount of curry on top. Girls had pizza etc all enjoyed but being put inside having reserved and wouldn't even move tables internally meant we had to table loiter with drinks in hand until one became a available. ( they can manage this in London or everywhere else, perhaps review that).

We met a friend outside here and decided to stop and have a drink outside with them.We had a Fruit Tea,which was pleasant,but my wife had a Cappuccino,which she thought was a bit flavourless,and had very little foam on top,than could be expected.The seats on the terrace were pleasant enough.We were met by a pleasant young lady who provided sanitiser,and delivered our drinks politely and quickly.

Thanks a great friendly welcoming service with a smile and can do attitude. Best tasty takeaway coffee, bacon and egg sandwiches.... very satisfying and even recommended by the Coffee shop next door.

Had a great take away pizza today (at a distance) !! Piping hot, crispy base and lots of pepperoni ! Great friendly quick service and will be back very soon!!

In Margate for a weekend last week. Don't know the town at all. So pleased to have found Charlie's! Really lovely food and staff happy to help with our questions about where to go in the evening and how the bus system worked. We felt so welcome.

Popped in for breakfast with two friends and instantly made to feel welcome. Had an amazing large breakfast which really hit the spot and the most gorgeous cappuccino. One of my friends had the vegan breakfast which she really enjoyed, while the other had a small breakfast. Great price and great quality. Will definitely be going back.

We were in the area to check out another place and decided to look for a restaurant for dinner. This one looked interesting. It is small and cozy. Hubby said when he lived there the it was a news agent. I had the gammon with pineapple and chips. The meat was done perfectly - not dry as gammon often is and the chips were crispy outside and soft inside, salted just right. I would not hesitate to go back the next time we are in Margate.

We went Margate for the day with family it was a lovely day. Went into Charlies for a meal had a lovely warm welcome there was 5of us we could not sit together 4 of us got our meal one they forgot but when the bill came they had taken the price of the meal off. Would recommend any one going to Margate go and have a meal at Charlies. We live in Wiltshire.

we went in with 7 of us..and they coudnt have been nicer to sort out a table to accomodate us. Food was lovely and they also came around with free mini chocolate rolls.Drinks perfect well done charlies

From the outside you may think it is an Indian restaurant, it may have been but is now a cafe. Don't be put off the staff are super friendly the food is good inexpensive and good portions. The cakes are the best ever and really home made lots to choose from a proper slice with ice cream or cream the best in Margate. Cake and coffee or tea is a must scrum .

Never judge a book by its cover. Right from the moment we stepped in to the café to the moment we left it was just great. The owner does not only have great people skills he also has a little gem of a business there, ALL the staff were very friendly, place was clean and had plenty of space for my pushchair. Reasonably priced. we are on holiday with the Auntie and my 3 young children and we was that comfy we didn't want to leave. We really hope to return.

Visited here for dinner with 8 friends. 6 of us ordered steak,cooked differently. Always apprehensive with steaks and large groups - but there was no need! Everyone’s food came out together, steak was cooked to perfection & was so delicious. Staff were really friendly and attentive! Really good night & great vibe. Recommend the food!

Visited here for the first time last night with some work chums for ‘Darrens Fun Quiz’. Were greeted by very warm and friendly hosts who made us feel very welcome, all staff couldn’t do enough for us. Drinks were served promptly and everyone had a real nice relaxed attitude. The quiz was the best fun I’ve had in ages - not too hard or serious so everyone had a good chance at knowing an answer or two. Musical round descend into hilarious chaos and half time sweets were cool. Didn’t try the food but will definitely go back at some point to give it a try. Charlie’s is, in my opinion, a welcome breath of fresh air in amongst the cliché, so called over priced trendy bars that are springing up. Give me fun and chaos anytime.

This is a small but very good place to eat. The food is excellent, and the staff are friendly. The atmosphere is calm and the meals are served very quickly. The house white wine is also pleasant. The cakes are superb and well worth taking home. Thank you so much.

Stopped here for a quick bite to eat at lunch time as the other half wanted a bacon sandwich and we hadn’t found anywhere else that looked good. As we walked in we were greeted by a friendly gentleman and offered nice seating in a booth, there were also tables available. The menu wasn’t very big but did offer vegetarian and vegan options which was fabulous to see being a vegan myself. We also discovered a sign on the door saying “Dogs Welcome” which I thought was brilliant. The same gentleman who greeted us took our order and the food and drinks arrived in under 10 minutes, so bonus points for the quick service. The food was lovely, and my partner was very happy with his well stacked bacon and egg sandwich and massive bowl of cheesy chips.

Fast service. Popular with locals is a good sign. Typical cafe food, large portions, good standard and good value for money.Has themed days, Tuesday pies, midweek roasts etc. Very friendly staff.

Very good menu for vegans & meat eaters the staff were very helpful & pleasant, very warm & friendly atmosphere nothing was too much trouble.

Stumbled on this little gem of a place on a cold wet evening whilst on holiday. The welcome and service we received were outstanding. The waiter(?) was so friendly and chatty, we felt like regulars. Not the most salubrious decor but warm and clean. Ordered Scampi and chips which came quickly - freshly cooked, attractively presented, hot and delicious. A good, hearty, good-value meal. I highly recommend this establishment

I was taken here by people who had been before. It’s on the seafront and has an outside seating area which is a great sun trap.

We visited on a Thursday lunchtime.lots of lovely outdoor seating but we chose to dine inside.We both decided to have cod and chips which were served promptly by friendly staff.The cod was delicious but the chips were dry as if they had been kept warm for a while.Good wheelchair access except my wheelchair would not pass through the initial door leading to the disabled toilet.Nice atmospheric restaurant and we would return.

The ham eggs and chips was amazing loads and loads of hand carved ham Plenty of freshly cooked chips The all day breakie went down well also

We had a lovely family meal here along the seafront. Food was of a reasonable price and good quality and service was pleasant. I will certainly return when in Margate next.

Great place, came upon it by chance while walking along the front at Margate, Three of us all had Cod & Chips very tasty, Staff were very friendly, nice atmosphere.

Me and Becky went here with Linda for a drink and the Pimms was nothing special however the staff were so friendly and helpful. We did not try the food however great place for a break

Great little place! Went in here with a group of friends for a quick evening meal and a pint before going to Winter Gardens just down the road.

Eight of us descended on Charlie's for a bite of lunch. I ordered Beef Madras but after 10 minutes I was told they had just sold last one. Went with my families order and had Scampi. The meal was excellent, when it arrived.

Visited on our first evening, it was so good that we went the next two evenings as well. Lovely selection of food, healthy portions, beautifully cooked and fresh and friendly service. We sat on the frontage and enjoyed the food and sea views. Top tips, look out for sudden gusts of wind taking your wine glass. Seagulls were no problem but would be there for scraps so look out where you leave waste food; not that we left a scrap! Children made welcome with smaller portions if specified. Superb value for money and recommended.

We live in Margate and had a couple of friends down for the weekend. After a hard nights partying on the Saturday we came to Charlies on the Sunday for a light lunch. For whatever reason we'd never tried here before (maybe the internal decor put us off) we usually go to the bar right next door. Anyway, we were so pleased we gave it ago, admittedly the sun was shining and we sat outside but both the service and service was excellent and value for money. The lady that served us was great, really pleasant (and efficient) without coming across false or insincere. The food we had was really good, two of us had spaghetti bolognaise which tasted like it was homemade and much better than we had expected, the fish and chips was really good too. Our drinks came with plenty of ice and we're good measures!

Simple, easy quick food in the heart of the square at Margate. This is no fuss, no frills food which is just what we needed after a day in town and at the beach. I'm sure we'll be back.

What a lovely experience x had our dog poppy with us x fantastic food excellent entertainment and all on Margate front. Got to see the sun setting in a really relaxing restaurant. Really good champagne (proper champagne) at a really reasonable price x if you are a dog lover great entertainment and great food this is the place for you . Will definitely be returning and thank you to all the staff for making my evening perfect x

Was sat here 40 minutes waiting for a coffee, took 20 minutes to be served. Wasn't busy. Don't bother. Plenty of other cafes nearby.

Our waitress was really on the ball, zooming around to serve folk sitting outside. Not all waitresses were as good though, one was so painfully shy looking we wondered how she coped with a gregarious Margate crowd! So...food....was a bit over cooked (dry fish) but to be honest it’s GREAT value here. I’d definitely go again, sitting outside, swilling wine in the sun, people watching. £8 for fish and chips, sitting in the sun? Yes please!

Charlie's is a lovely family run family friendly restaurant and bar. The staff are really friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them during our recent visit.

Enjoyed a lovely meal of fish and chips on a very rainy day 04/06. To top the visit we were given a lift to the station by a very kind gentleman from Charlie's as it was still pouring with rain and we would have had a long wait for a taxi. Thank you all for making our day despite the weather.

Visited Charlie's bar on a very busy hot Saturday May bank holiday weekend.

Only stopped for coffee and cakes, but the staff were all so helpful and friendly it's well worth a visit. The home made cakes were excellent. Views across the road to the sea and harbour add to the atmosphere.

We were out for a walk in the late afternoon and came across Charlie's by chance. It was very clean, we were well looked after from the start, the meal was well-cooked and well-presented. It was a pleasure to go there and will certainly be somewhere where we will go regularly.

Charlie's bar is a cafe/bar/restaurant/night time entertainment, all rolled into one! Food, basic, but plenty of choice, very reasonably priced for a seafront venue and of extremely good quality. Staff cannot do enough for you, so friendly and accommodating. Comfortable inside and out when the weather is good. Margate's little gem!

Situato sulla Parade, di fronte al mare in bella posizione, è un posticino grazioso per le specialità locali. Nel mio caso una Jacket Potato al cheddar, buona e abbondante. Spettacolare il ragazzo (forse Charlie?), che corre come un matto per accontentare tutti.

We went to dreamland for the day with our two teenage children it was a lovely sunny day in the Easter holidays, the waitress was lovely and the man serving who I think was charlie was busy attending to customers and very keen to help, it was a very pleasant lunch

It’s horrible, the waitress was very nice though. My spag Bol was bland and some pastas in clumps and they were dry. The mince was very bland.

Had a lovely lunch outside with friends on a glorious sunny day. The food is excellent. The cuisine is English and very nicely cooked and presented. The staff are great and the food and wine are very fairly priced. Would recommend this venue as I think it caters for everyone. We will be going back very soon.

Walking around Margate Old Town with Derek, our miniature Schnauzer, looking for somewhere that dogs were welcome. Lovely coffee, tea and scrumptious cakes. The chocolate and lemon cakes were to die for. Excellent service too.

Visited NYE. The atmosphere of the place is awesome. Really good music that suits the place. Both waiters were friendly and welcomed us with huge smiles even though we have not prebooked (as most places seemed to be closed for parties). Food was very fresh and delicious for a very good price also. Highly recommended. We definitely will be back :)

This place opened earlier in the year and is a welcome addition to the ever expanding Margate catering scene.

Visited with seven people and two dogs after a long walk. The venue is extremely dog friendly offering drinks and treats as we settled down. We had varied meals including roasts, scamp, ham and eggs, cod and omelette. Everyone enjoyed their food with no complaints whatsoever. All the staff were polite, chatty and friendly as were the other diners. Would definitely return, thank you Charlie's.

We found Charlie's when looking for somewhere to eat. Its meals were considerably cheaper than others in the area but were tasty and enjoyable. We visited twice during our stay but unfortunately, missed the entertainment that they have on some evenings. The staff were very friendly and made us feel welcome which is why we returned. All the meals were great and there was a good choice from pies to curry. When we are back in the area we will certainly return.

Three generations run this great venue. Small and friendly it has rapidly become our spot of choice for coffee each Sunday morning after a seafront stroll from Cliftonville and gathering our energy for a return home. Great coffee, super home-made cake, exemplary service, comprehensive menu and highly affordable prices.

We thoroughly enjoyed our carrot cake and lattes here today. A friendly warm welcome. We will return.

I had my 40th birthday party here and was not disappointed. Cannot fault the owners and their team, the food or the atmosphere. The music was a constant flow of songs we enjoyed - some guests enjoyed a bit of a boogie and a singalong! Nothing was too much trouble, the team went above and beyond to ensure a good time was had by all. Would highly recommend as the team really do aim to please. Charlie's also do special event nights - well worth keeping a look out for these. We will definitely be back soon.

Looking for somewhere for a sandwich and a drink on a wet day in Margate, when we came across this quirky café. The staff were very friendly and the sandwiches and drinks we ordered were all excellent at a reasonable price.
