There was a very limited choice for people with food intolerances and preferences. My friend is vegan and didn’t eat. My haddock chowder was a satisfying portion and a gluten free roll came with it as requested. The price was reasonable, under £10 for a pot of tea and chowder with roll. The table was dirty, they weren’t on top of clearing and cleaning the tables, which I appreciate may have been due to being busy before we got there. A waitress brought my tea and put it in front of my friend, I asked her to clean the table, she cleaned in front of me and around the condiments but not my friend!!! I was dumbfounded, my friend asked me not to say anything as my jaw fell open. My food arrived with the waitress telling me I could go and get my own cutlery, which she had just walked past. I picked up more than 10 dirty spoons, handed them to the person at the til and searched through the other tray section to find a clean one. Another customer was also appalled and complaining while she then searched for a clean spoon. So my overall review is - food ok, price ok, hygiene poor, service poor.

Came here for a quick coffee and cake after visiting the Cathedral, I have to say i'm glad I did not look at the reviews before coming as I think i'd have been completely scared off! I have to say the service, drinks and cake were all divine and the café utterly charming. Everything felt very warm and inviting, a perfect quiet space to enjoy drinks with some good quality, homemade food.

We just wanted something very light to eat when we left the cathedral so decided to pop into The Loft. Great views. And a great selection of cakes, sandwiches and the like. A lovely fruit scone suited our needs, though. A bit rock cake shaped but I loved the crunchy outside and soft inside. Spread with some butter, it was perfect.

Very disappointing. The noise in the cafe is deafening. The coffee quality was poor, very insipid. Toasted sandwiches ( ham and cheese) were acceptable but only one slice of wafer thin ham ( you could virtually see through) and hardly generous with cheese. Victoria sponge and coffee cake very dry with very little buttermilk filling. Overall a poor experience. Frankly not good enough

My friend and I went into the Cathedral Cafe for coffee and cake around 11ish then back again for lunch. This was after paying for a tour of the Palace and Gardens, so we have spent a fair amount today, at least 80.00. On placing our lunch order I asked how much the glass of wine was and was shown on the menu a glass of malbec was 6.95. I actually used my finger to point to the 6.95 as I'm not prepared to pay more than 7.00 for a glass of wine. I left my friend to pay and we sat down. My friend remarked the glass of wine was 9.50. I went up to the till to let them know this was not what I had ordered, fully expecting this to be refunded and resolved. The staff would not do this, so I asked for the Manager Millie Whetstone who also refused to refund me for the wine. I always check prices of wine precisely for this reason. Millie said 'My staff are not like that'. We took up their offer of having dessert, cheese and biscuits, to be taken away. The waitress came back and rechecked 'Incase I miss heard' which she clearly did the first time. The boxes arrived covered in jam and a squashed chip, photo attached. We had a lovely few days in Wells but such poor customer service has tainted our memories of a beautiful day. We asked for the Manager, then asked Millie for her Managers email address but this was still not resolved. It should of been rectified at the first point of complaint and we as customers should not of been made to feel uncomfortable. We rarely complain unless justified and this is one of those occasions, definitely not an award cafe!

Nice cafe upstairs at Wells Cathedral. Good choice of cakes and pastries. And the coffee was well made. Only negative was that tables were 'clogged' with people just chatting with empty plates/cups. And some other tables were reserved. Seemed to be a meeting place for retired people!

There is nothing good to say here. We went as a preview to the Christmas carol service. The 'chosen' meal was a very small portion of luke warm fish pie served on a cold plate with salad! The fish was not the usual selection for a fish pie, I didn't detect any smoked fish, there was no sauce, it was cheap white cubed frozen fish in a waterly slop. We weren't offered any drink other than water, then found out wine was available if you asked. An appalling experience, possibily the worst food I've ever been served, totally underwhelmed; we will never return.

The cafe is up some stairs in the Cathedral. There is a lift. We visited at lunchtime. We did not queue for very long. We ordered butternut squash soup, one gluten free roll, one plain. Two coffees. The soup was the only gluten free and vegetarian option apparent to me. So paid for soup. The spoons are next to the till. So paid before I saw the state of the cutlery. Initially I thought it was patina on old cutlery, but if you look closely you could see that every spoon was dirty. The young man got me another spoon off of a trolley behind him, and it was still dirty. The lady then said she would bring me a spoon and to sit down. She brought me a spoon she said she had washed herself, and it still was not very clean. The spoons need a good scrub, the dirt looks dried on over time. I used a teaspoon from my coffee to eat the soup, and I cleaned with my paper napkin. The soup was a bit too salty, and not very tasty. I would have left it, but I needed to eat, and it was expensive to waste. The gluten free roll was warm, and good. The plain roll was cold in the middle. The coffee was mellow and pleasant. The view was good from the windows. It is not somewhere that I would go again. A man who had been next to me in the queue made fun of me for complaining, and I do dislike complaining. But it is important to protect people’s health, cutlery should be clean, it is only fair to give criticism to a business, rather than just walking away, so that they have the opportunity to improve. We are paying to eat, it should be nicer than opening a tin of soup at home, not something that has to be politely endured, for fear of being a ‘complainer’.

Visited today with my husband, 2 children and our dog. After searching online for dog friendly places to eat, we decided this would be a good choice as we were visiting for the cathedral plant expedition. We ordered 2 lattes, 2 cold meals from the fridge quiche and a cheese salad (both tasty and good portions) and 2 childrens lunch boxes. We ordered our childrens sandwiches made with white bread. Very long wait and they eventually came out on brown bread. I asked at the counter if the did have white bread and the man was very rude and said yes you have to ask at the time of ordering which I stated that we had!! The waitress confirmed this and went to remake the sandwiches. She arrived back at the table with only one sandwich as they had rand out of white bread! I asked for a refund and was driven one. My point is the waitress was fabulous, very attentive and apologetic for the delay and mishap. She seemed to be dealing with other peoples mistakes. The man was rude, didn’t care less and made us feel uncomfortable. Brought our coffees over, stating one shot lattes which wasn’t what we asked for but we accepted having waited a while. We in that time had moved tables as our dog was in the walkway and we found a table where she wouldn’t be in the way. I explained this so out food didn’t go to the wrong table, he said ….we’ll yes….I did notice!! Rude and arrogant! We’re not visiting again! You are ok if you just accept whatever they bring to your table.

The location of this cafe - just near the entrance to the Bishops Palace, makes it very attractive to visitors - with the end of result of it being very busy at times. When we arrives, there were non-socially distanced queues snaking out of the door and service point. So, we decided to do the gardens first. When we came back, we got a table straight away and the staff were pleasant and helpful despite the busyness of the day. Food was well prepared

Called in at lunchtime after a concert, not our first visit but we hadn't been in for a while. I had something already prepared, my husband chose to order hot food, fish chowder - big mistake! We sat down with drinks and my food and waited. And waited. And waited. And waited. A woman who'd ordered the chowder just after us went up to the counter to complain, and I suggested my husband did too. Within a few minutes the woman was given chowder - presumably actually that originally ordered by my husband. And we waited. And waited. Just how long does it take to heat a bowl of soup?? I'd finished by this time and also complained at the counter to the young staff gathered there for a jolly good chat. The young woman I spoke to made it clear she wasn't the slightest bit bothered by the dreadful service, and could not care less. Then the soup arrived, hardly worth the wait. Half an hour wait for one bowl of soup? As we left, I complained again to an older woman behind the counter, and said we would never return. She really did seem to care, and I wondered if she had been working there awhile and seen standards drop so low, as it used to be good. Many places in Wells, shops, cafes, attractions, even those attached to the Cathedral, only want the tourist money and have no interest in good service and repeat business. We will never give them another penny. Fortunately there are good places too.

It's really gone substantially downhill since the days when it was in the cloister. Instead of whole, hot, homemade quiches with a selection of lovely salads, there's now a pre-prepped slice of cold quiche wrapped under plastic film with a sorry looking side salad. Also, visited at midday in the week and there was only one sad looking dairy-free fruit cake in the cakes and sweets. Really pathetic in this day and age. Out of the four proper cakes, none were dairy-free. My partner (who has a dairy allergy) settled on a packet of crisps. Can't imagine coming back again. A sorry decline for what once used to be a superb cafe. Worth noting that the café on the market place had a good selection of dairy-free cakes. If they can manage it, I'm not sure why the cathedral can't.

A good spot to meet up with family coming to Wells for the day from various places. No-one seemed to mind that we were waiting. Very friendly service and good coffee and tea. A very nice cafe (also does lunch, although we didn't sample this) and quieter than some outside the cathedral close. Toilets and a lift are available.

The café is situated in the grounds of the Bishop's Palace. There was a varied menu which was sourced primarily from local suppliers. It was a lovely setting with indoor & outdoor seating. The food was of a very high quality and the staff were very friendly and helpful.

Although busy and obviously popular, service was prompt and the tables cleaned and tidied quickly. Food available ranged from snacks and cakes (I can highly recommend the cheese scones) to light meals. Good choice of drinks. Excellent.

We just spent 10 days in Wells last month and fell in love with the town of Wells and especially the cathedral. The cafe was so cute inside with wonderful views of the outside. The carot cake was to die for as was the lattes!

We were here for tea and cake towards the end of the day, and we found it very comfortable and inexpensive. It is always good news if an establishment provides gluten free options as a matter of course. The staff are pleasant and helpful. One slight down side is that there are plenty of windows, so light and airy, but it is not possible to see out when seated at the tables

This is a lovely room with views over the cathedral and bishop's palace. Cafeteria-style service, with hot food prepared to order and brought to the table. The seafood chowder at £6 was great value and really tasty.

Had lunch for 4; 2 adults & 2 kids. Approx £30. Food was hot and tasty, kids loved the seafood chowder so much that they had seconds! The staff were friendly and went the extra mile, even though they were clearly rushed off their feet with a coach party. We’ll be back

Stopped off here just to grab a coffee and a snack. It’s reasonably priced, the staff are very polite and welcoming and the menu had a good selection of food on offer.

We visit this cafe when in Wells shopping (can be busy on market day) of a week day . The staff are very welcoming , polite, pleasant and helpful which help to create a relaxed enjoyable and warm feel to this cafe .Seating is basic but comfortable and not cramped - window seating with good views (we like the view towards the moat and Bishop’s Palace).

We enjoyed our afternoon teas in a clean but relative spartan dining area. The staff were courteous and efficient. Prices were a bit steep but not so that they could be described as "overpriced" There are comparable refreshments in the area which are better value for money.

A lovely light, bright and airy café that serves tea (various), coffee (various), cakes, light snacks, toasted sandwiches, salads, home-made soup. All at reasonable prices. The staff are happy and friendly and very helpful. Although the café is on the first floor, there is an access lift for push-chairs, wheelchairs and other walking aids. There is also plenty of room between the tables to negotiate you way to a seat.

We stayed for one night after Xmas shopping at the Clark’s village in Street. This lovely Inn with rooms is only 5 miles away. The welcome and check in from the lady at the desk were fantastic. She was naturally polite and helpful, not put on at all. Our room was very clean and spacious with everything we needed and lots of hot water for a relaxing bath. Homemade cookies were a nice touch too. We ate in the pub and can also say that this was a lovely experience with great food and a roaring fire. All staff were very friendly and provided fantastic service. Breakfast the next morning was also great with locally sourced ingredients. We will return, Thank you.

My wife and I both have Shepton connections but had never been to the cafe before. Having g recently retired, we called in for a toasty and a sandwich. The food selection is brilliant, prices really reasonable (no £8 sandwiches here), and the staff really friendly. Sadly, the cafe is up for sale but we really hope to get the chance to return before it closes or goes upmarket.

Booked a table for family of five for Halloween Service was polite and friendly, didn’t have to wait too long for our order and the meals were all hot quantity & quality was amazing. We all had fish & chips but there are other options of things to eat. Definitely value for money and will definitely be returning again

The refurb of this place is of a very high standard and the staff are friendly and helpful. Unfortunately the food lets it down. Primarily, if you don't like burgers or fish and chips, find somewhere else. I visited with a friend and although my fish and chips were good, my friends meal was first served on completely cold vegetables. On pointing this out to the waiting staff, she offered a replacement which, we expected would be a plated meal with hot food. Unfortunately it was delivered as a pile of veg and potatoes thrown together in a tin dish. Not ideal and a real disappointment. Probably would not visit again.
