Chandos Deli in Exeter

Incredible toaster sandwich. The flavour was amazing especially the sourdough bread. Only criticism was that the centre of the sandwich wasn’t warm. Also very pricey.

Was planning to nip in for lunch with my mum which I do regularly every time we meet up however this time I asked the waitress before I ordered and before my mum arrived if they could spare a cardboard box as there was an injured bird outside so I needed to get it to the vets nearby before lunch. Not an unreasonable ask since most stock comes in boxes that are then thrown away. Waitress went to ask manager and right in front of me he rolled his eyes, shook his head and laughed. If you don’t want to provide a bit of cardboard that is already lying around that’s fine but don’t laugh and mock me where I stand for trying to do a good thing. I said ‘ you know what don’t worry about it’ and walked out and that’s the last time I’ll be visiting Chandos and will ensure I let others know what kind of people are managing this place. It takes nothing to be kind, or at the very least NOT rude.

Expensive and cold bacon and egg sandwich with no ketchup or brown sauce. Nice staff though who gave me some Dijon mustard- so thanks for that.

The coffee is amazing. The staff are friendly and the food is varied. However, I am taking off a star in a bid to suggest to the management that they need to look at the premises with fresh eyes. Chandos Deli is verging on grimy! The floors and the toilet need scrubbing. The tables need clearing and wiping more often. I like it here but it is time for a "tip of the tiller".

Every time I come here, and it is frequent, am still surprised by the quality of the food, great staff and amazing coffee! By far the best in Exeter

I have just finished a ten month course in Exeter. This little gem was my favourite place to eat. The staff are so friendly and really recommend their Panko tofu sandwiches. Amazing coffee too! Will defo be back with my husband x

Just had a bite to eat at this deli, a bacon, tomato, chilli jam with chive cream cheese in a pretzel bun…..wow! It was absolutely delicious. Had a flat white too. Great coffee, fantastic food and really fresh. Thanks

Awful service when I politely said my latte was supposed to be iced the man making it told me I was wrong about what I had ordered and refused to change it. The chai iced latte is also just cold milk.

Visited here today and had the most tasty sandwich. Granary bread, halloumi, pink slaw and sarachi mayo all toasted . Bloody lovely! Prices for coffee are as bit high - £3+ for a regular coffee - but it’s good coffee. No complaints here!

Management couldn't organise a pis* up in a brewery. Staff are incredibly overworked. Prices are laughable - didn't realise I was in the Ritz. Seating almost impossible to come by. Food/drink order took 20mins to turn up. Tables are left dirty long after customers have left. Coffee was average. Have seen a number of job ads come and go in recent months for this place.. Not surprised. Clearly they need a long look in the mirror. I know numerous people that have sworn off Chandos since 2021 for abysmal service. I now know why. Has gone severely downhill. 0 stars.

Went in with my partner and stood waiting to be served. Another couple came in and they got served! I turned and said to my partner “if it happens again we will leave” waited patiently again and another customer came in and got served. We left and haven’t been back since! How anyone could not be aware that we were stood there is beyond me!

Went here today for coffee in the morning and then back for lunch! Such a lovely atmosphere and amazing staff who clearly work really bloody hard! Had a soup and a coffee and both were gorgeous. Deffo be back! Thanks 🥰

Loved my visit to Chandos. The sandwiches were packed with flavour, beautifully presented and really filling. The atmosphere of the cafe was vibrant, and enjoyed some great banter with the staff too. Good coffee - strong, but that was my fault for not thinking to request a single shot. Only downer was perhaps a slight lack of comfy seating, but otherwise a great experience.

Visited at 9 am on Tuesday 26th July 2022 and asked for an extra large strong flat white coffee to take In to college. Given a small flat white and immediately said oh sorry I wanted an extra large response was a curt we only do one size and a shrug. No apology no sorry we only do one size when I ordered and paid so £3.25 for a big disappointment. Result went somewhere else for lunch yesterday and today

Visited with my father, we’ve been searching Exeter city centre for years to find a decent coffee and patisserie… and then we find this place Forget your global/national coffee chains where the barista plucked from studying in college mid week, clearly doesn’t know what they are doing, these guys tick all the boxes Great service, super coffee, brewed correctly and a wide selection of eats. Would totally recommend. We will be back

Used to Come here regularly. Joined the queue , everything looked ok , managed to get a seat easily . Then after ordering I was told ‘ No cash ‘ payments, so upped and left . No reason at all to stop cash . Your loss .

I have to say i have no critics for this cafe. The toastie was amazing so much flavour and tasted fresh. Coffee very good lovely to have with lunch. Would 100% recommend. Will be going back as soon as i can.

Had a quick lunch here - very nice choice of salads. Good prices, quick and delicious. We sat outside in the sunshine on Roman Walk. Good experience - would definitely return.

Chanced upon Chandos for a lunchtime snack one day - so impressed we took the family there for brunch the following day! Delicious coffees and smoked salmon tartlet, and the sourdough bread was gorgeous. Definitely returning to taste more of their deli delights in future!

A breath of fresh air in the centre of town! The coffee was superb and food sensasional. I had a flat white, the chicken ceaser toasted sourdough sandwich with alioli, pickled cucumber and bacon. Best thing I’ve eaten in weeks! Can’t wait to come back...

Acabo de llegar a tomar un café mientras esperaba a mi esposo, al final de la cola de unas 6 personas. Llamé a mi esposo para hacerle saber dónde estaba y mientras estaba en la llamada rápida me di cuenta de que me gritaban que no se permiten perros. No tenía idea de que no se le permitía entrar y probablemente no debería haberlo asumido, pero fue muy humillante con una fila de personas mirándome y gritándome una señora detrás del mostrador. No volveré, con o sin el perro. Me encantan los huevos escoceses como trozos de delicatessen allí también. Vergüenza.

We popped into this deli for a mid morning snack - hot chocolate and cakes, which were fine. Our concern is, that while awaiting the hot chocolates, our cakes were at the end of the counter where an assistant and a customer were having an extended conversation with our cakes between them! This is not good hygeinic practice, and it is unlikely that we will visit again!

I am a regular customer at this establishment, I appreciate certain dishes on the menu and the coffee is nice when it is not burnt. The food is good generally, however, the variety of choices greet the visitor with some odd combinations. There are no regular sandwiches (like ham and cheese) as the place tries to present itself as 'sophisticated'. So, apart from a strange concoction of fish with blue cheese that can be found at the heart of Chandos deli, the overall impression is just bland. The prices are also high with an average of £5 per item.

I have freuqented this establishment for over a year. Roughly visting 4-5 times per week. It has been my local coffee shop. I will make a list of my observations;

What a lovely little spot! Such welcoming and friendly staff, with great toasted sandwiches, good local beers too! Sat outside with friends in the sun and had a lovely lunch. Will definitely be back!

El mostrador de delicatessen está lleno de delicias deliciosas para seducir a sus papilas gustativas, sin olvidar las golosinas que se hacen en casa. Yum Buenos precios, grandes vibraciones. Mi nuevo lugar favorito:)

What a superb team at the Chandos Deli. Manager Russell has crafted a warm welcome combined with an impressive range of goods. We had the cheese and olive tart and a slice of the billionaires slice. Both terrific. And they serve the best Americano outside of Derby. If you want a lesson on how to run a food outlet, come here, make notes and enjoy the fare.

Chando's offer Mediterranean type food which is extremely good. You can take away a baguette or what ever, or eat in. It's busy so you might be a bit squashed next to someone else or even share a table. I like this, it's nice to talk to other people. Everything is very fresh and inviting, at sensible prices. They also offer a free jug of water and glasses.

Food is massively overpriced for what it is and the coffee is nice but served in weirdly small thimble cups. The cups are very sensibly made of glass so to drink them you have to leave them on the table and lean in and sip so you don't have to burn your fingers. Don't really recommend.

High prices, low standard of service, generally untidy. It may have well been clean but it didn't look as if it was. Better places nearby.

I heard rumours that this place does amazing cannoli and I wasn't disappointed! The staff are really friendly, the coffee is great and the deli is clean. Overall there are some really good vibes at this place and I will definitely be visiting again. Cannot recommend enough!

I went to chandos to meet a business associate, who tells me they regularly frequent the cafe and I will be now coming back! Great coffee, delicious baguette (chorizo, cheddar and sweet mustard!), friendly service and lovely atmosphere.

Coffee and food good. Staff member cleaning clearly seeking to cause as much noise as possible with glassware and crockery. Utterly ruined the experience.

Being well aware of foods from France, the USA, UK from restaurants chics to café to hotels, inns, pubs, auberges and more within the past 35 years in all, I know abut quality, service, prices in those places. Chandos Deli has great service and the decor is sweet. Still tough, prices must be more affordable as $5 plus for a Salmon bap sees high. The pastries can be pricey too. It has got to be said that the eco-Nicaraguan coffee is super tough. Hopefully, fairer prices will make the place even more lovely.

I’ve eaten here a couple of times now and the food is always delicious, it’s a little bit more expensive but that’s ok as the food and coffee are worth it. However the staff really need to cheer up! I’ve never had a smile when being served or witnessed any smiling or laughing between staff, it’s a shame it could feel a lot warmer with a bit of effort.

Se ve bien desde el exterior, en un área agradable, con un área de servicio muy bien presentada con algunos bocadillos elegantes, etc. pero la cafetería más incómoda en la que he estado: bancos duros o taburetes de bar de plástico tambaleantes, se congelan porque insisten en dejar la puerta abierta (con calefacción encendida - no estoy seguro de cuál es el punto en eso). Como no hay lugar cómodo para sentarse y no hay música, no hay un ambiente agradable y no es muy relajante.

Great food, great coffee and really great staff.... all with a view of the City Walls. Staff ( genuine Italian folk) are so helpful too. If you need somewhere upmarket, clean and with a great atmosphere then this is the place!

Pop in regularly for a sandwich, a coffee and sometimes even a pastry! Staff are friendly and always happy to chat. Food here is really fantastic. They don’t just do baguettes, their salads are awesome too.

Tucked away behind the High Street, Chando's is consistently great for coffee and deli-style brunch/lunch. Lovely coffee made with care. Orange juice freshly squeezed on the premises. Super deli selection. Seating outside and in.

Located behind Princesshay, Chandos Deli offer some of the best service, best coffee and the best Portuguese tarts (Pastéis de Nata) around. The counter always offers something new and exciting to eat and the location makes it perfect for relaxing in the sun.

Good coffee and nice to sit alfresco and then wander back in to look at the delicious olives and deli items. Nice place

Stopped off for a coffee and a glass of wine. Staff are friendly and was lovely to just sit outside in the peace and quiet. Lovely little place. Coffee was well made. Cakes look tastie and will go back.

Came here with my friends for lunch last week and we had their lunch time meal deal. Would definitely recommend it! So much more than your standard meal deal and not even that much more expensive. The food tasted so fresh and healthy, they were able to create the perfect cup of coffee for everyone and sitting outside in the sun under the cherry blossom tree was beautiful. The perfect summer spot!

We know most of the coffee shops in Exeter so tried this one today. Coffee was luke warm and very mean size for the price. Nice location and outside seating. Nice brownie and pastry. Better choices nearby

Just had some time spare so popped in for coffee to drink outside in the sunshine. Asked for skinny flat white at the counter and I noticed the guy using full fat milk so I stated skimmed was required. . This clearly was a hassle for him and I'm sure he just topped up the full fat milk with skimmed rather than start again . His attitude was dreadful needless to say didn't drink it and won't be returning. Can't abide poor customer service and yes I know I should have said something but I couldn't without causing a scene. As my meeting was in a little while I had more on my mind. Good to share this with trip advisor though

I have to say myself and my large group of friends often meet here for coffee and lunch and even though the staff are generally rather rude the food does in some way make up for it. That being said I met up with a friend today and it just so happened i happened to have my very well behaved 6 month old Frenchie puppy with as I have done previously.

Lovely hidden gem with good atmosphere and friendly staff. Coffee was a little bit bitter today on my visit but other than that great sandwich ! But pricey but they are an independent venue in a city centre and suppose they have to compete with the mass chains that exist.

Coffee great, food superb, staff lovely. A few suggestions for them though, the bench tables are super cramped together so forget this place if you are a big party, want space to relax, have a pushchair or lots of shopping. Only one toilet too and that was stinky and congested when we visited. Place looks a bit tatty, must be due for a makeover. So overall, the people and menu is lovely, it just needs some improvements to keep it up to standard in my opinion.

Chandon deli is one of my favourite places to come socially or for work. The staff are extremely kind, caring and respectful. Each and every one of the staff will give you excellent service, I was served two young waitresses, Hope and Lori. Both would engage in conversation and overall makes my experience wonderful. Would highly recommend anyone to come here. Lovely environment to do my work.

What a lovely and unique place to have a little break from shopping. This place does really great coffee and has a selection of teas as well. They also offer freshly squeezed juice as well as food that is all homemade. The had some quite different cakes - some of them made from courgette! You can also get artisan meats and cheeses here as well as craft beers, chutneys and all sorts of interesting produce.

Coffee, goats cheese sandwich, brownie and a codina - all shared. Friendly staff. All great. Love coming here.

Para el almuerzo mientras compras visitado en Exeter - me gustó mucho el ambiente local del lugar y creo que es un buen lugar si no quieres comer en una cadena como es muy masiva o jirafa, etc.

Paramos para un espresso después de la misa. El café era genial y el servicio era fantástico. Parece que en este buen servicio de edad es difícil de encontrar pero no en Chandos. Ah, y los brownies y tartas de crema pastelera es el mejor de todos!

Popped in here whilst waiting for my phone to be repaired, and I was served as soon as I walked in the door, despite how busy they were! Very friendly service and very quick too. I had the chocolate brownie, which is to die for! I will 100% be coming back here! 10/10 service. Would highly recommend.

Food good as always, but the service was poor today. I will come back, but doubt I would if this had been my first visit....I know there's a lot to talk about today, but take care, I wasn't the only one grumbling....

A tucked away deli that has morphed into a coffee shop with tables inside and out, a very short walk from the main thoroughfare. Good coffee. Simple offering of pastries, cakes and rolls with decent bread and interesting fillings.

Chandos has a great range of artisan sandwiches, pastries and quiches. I opted for the cheddar, chorizo and pimento pepper baguette which was really lovely. I was really impressed by the fact that the staff took the time to toast the baguette properly and the filling was beautifully melted. My friend is still raving about her lemon polenta cake which was a bit pricey but delicious.My main criticism is the speed of service. Despite having three staff working just on the sandwiches/ till area it took forever to order. We had a similar issue when we went in for coffees and it took 15 minutes (!!) for our takeaway coffees to be made despite the fact the cafe was pretty much empty.Great food but please sort out the service!

Excellent Mediterranean style coffee and eating spot ... super place for lunch and/or a light supper... excellent quality items/oils/pastas etc on sale.... really cheerful and happy atmosphere from the staff.... its a bit out of the way and the bustle being close to the old Roman wall with nice sun bathed (at times!) outside eating spots .... strongly recommended..

Great place to go for a coffee, away from all the bustle of the high street, sat outside in the sun, with all local products. Hot chocolate made with real chocolate rather than powder. Freshly made baguettes and great coffee.

Visited during a busy lunchtime period, lots of staff but not very clear organisation! Coffees were great and we collected them from the counter at the same time as the sandwich we ordered but not the cheese platter. As we seemed to have ordered via at least 3 members of staff we weren't sure if our order had really been taken - but the money had! After a wait of ~10 mins (we'd shared out the sandwich and drunk the coffee by now) the platter arrived. Nicely presented with fig chutney, humous, bread and salad but only a few slivers of (admittedly very nice) cheese and this was £8.99!Nice relaxed atmosphere but wouldn't eat here again though I'd go for a coffee

If you like to rustle up a good supper with some good ingredients then go to Chandos. When you have the wherewithal for that delicious supper take a bit of time out. Order some food and coffee and on a perfect summer day find a table outside.Chandos is within the Princesshay development with fantastic opportunities for retail therapy but this super deli also provides a great place to chill and enjoy the food you ordered while deciding on supper.

These guys make the best sandwiches ever!The baggettes are beautifully authentic with great filling and plenty of choice. I love the way the bread feels, so crusty is almost hurts but wonderfully satisfying.Also the brownies are half bad either. Get there at the right one of day and there could even be some free sample floating around!! The coffee stands up as well so all in all it's a cracking place to stop for lunch.Happy bunnies all round!!

This deli would be easy to miss but it is definitely worth a visit. It sells plenty of local and unusual produce, and the sandwich bar is great. Outdoor seating too.

This is definitely a foodie find. Excellent choice of soups, baguettes and freshly baked treats. Very artisan produce that is priced a little on the high side in my mind but definitely worth a visit

Visited with a friend on a trip to Exeter, and we only fancied a like snack and coffee, thought we try here, the staff were very friendly, however messed our order up straight away, but quickly rectified it, and after waiting 15 mins for I enquired, only for the staff to say they'd forgotten about us, hmmmm nice, it wasn't overly busy either, plus the food wasn't that great, and very over priced, nearly £20 for 2 sandwiches and 2 coffee, not impressed

The coffee is superb and the service to match! Really friendly staff in a quiet but still central location. The quality of the food is excellent and they have a great range of deli treats!
