Chaakoo Bombay Cafe in Glasgow City

Brilliant ambience and food, very authentic. The Kingfisher lager was not cool enough.... So, I'm back two years later in January 2025. We had the tapas menu for six, which was amazing! Look at my other reviews to see where I've been!

Ordered the meal for 2 for delivery, usually reluctant to try somewhere new but I'm so glad I did because the food was incredible. The meat in the curries were cooked to perfection (both lamb and the chicken), so much flavour in every single dish plus amazing value for money. The saag paneer and tandoori wings deserve a special mention of their own because they were glorious!

Gorgeous place with equally gorgeous food! We came in without a reservation on a busy Saturday evening, hoping to find halal food, and were lucky enough to be seated after a 15-minute wait. The hostess guided us to the bar area for drinks while we waited, and although the restaurant was packed and buzzing with energy, it only added to the charm. When we were finally ushered to our seats, it was a tight squeeze, with servers and customers moving around constantly. Some might find that a bit overwhelming, but I loved it—it contributed to the lively, bustling atmosphere. Once we ordered, our food arrived in just 15 minutes. We had the Lamb Madras, Monkfish Curry, Chicken Tikka Masala, Chicken Pakoras, Masala Fries, and Jeera and Lemon Rice—and every single dish was a hit. You know how some South Asian or curry restaurants serve dishes that all taste vaguely the same? Not here. Each curry was distinct and flavourful, making it such a joy to savour them individually and then mix and match. The Monkfish Curry stood out as my favorite. Monkfish is usually dense, but in this curry, it was tender, sweet, and just delightful. The Lamb Madras was melt-in-your-mouth delicious, with a perfect level of comforting warmth. The Chicken Tikka Masala was good—classic and reliable—but a little on the boring side when compared to the others. Still, every curry was fantastic in its own right. Even the sides were worth mentioning. The Chicken Pakoras were incredibly tender and flavorful, and the Jeera and Lemon Rice was light and perfectly seasoned. We may have overdone it with the carbs, but no regrets—the Masala Fries were lovingly spiced and irresistible. We couldn’t finish them all, so we happily took them to go. Service was excellent throughout. The servers checked in with us twice, always smiling and clearly enjoying their work. The ambiance was just as impressive as the food—beautiful old-school yet updated interiors that made the entire experience cozy and memorable. Chaakoo Bombay Café is a true gem. I can’t wait to come back the next time I’m in Glasgow. Highly recommend it for anyone looking for an authentic, halal, and vibrant dining experience!

Feels like a chain type place dominated by an inflexible system which doesn’t really want your custom. We hadn’t booked, but at 5pm walked into a pretty empty restaurant and asked for a table for two. After much pressing of buttons and clicking of the mouse it was deemed possible. The ambience was good, the menu looked interesting and the server asked what we’d like to drink. So far, so good! We ordered two pints, and, starving, asked for some pakora, samosas and a couple of Sheikh kebabs while we decide on a main. “Oh you need to order all your food together we don’t actually do starters” was the reply. Apparently the system cant cope with starters; all your food has to cone together as they are an “in and out kind of place” rather than a formal restaurant. After a couple of minutes of feeling perplexed at why anyone would create s system where such a simple (and presumably not uncommon) request was not possible, we cancelled our ordered pints and left. All worked out well in the end as we had one of the best Indian meals we have ever had across the road a hundred yards or so up. I guess Chaakoo know what they want, it’s clearly not us, but I wish them well.

Constantly sth wrong with the food delivered. Either missing parts of the order, mixed up orders or things being spilled during the delivery service, good food but that's all I can say.

Food and service was amazing. And what an atmosphere for a Tuesday night,the place was buzzing. I have never been in a restaurant that busy on a Tuesday night. Am looking forward to my next visit to Glasgow to come back again.

I had high hopes but the restaurant was very drafty and the service was okay. The food was good but the little dishes the food was served in and small table made it feel awkward and overcrowded.

I recently visited the Glasgow city centre the food was good and the staff was polite, the overall experience was disappointing due to management policies. Upon arrival, we were asked if we’d been before, followed by a recommendation to order 2-3 plates each—an unnecessary upsell, as the portions were more than enough. Additionally, a discretionary 10% gratuity was added to the bill, which is not a standard practice in the UK. This policy creates an awkward dynamic for both staff and customers. The staff were doing their best, but it’s clear the management’s approach prioritises upselling over customer comfort.

Utterly awful food by delivery app. Worse than a Vesta beef curry for those who know. Butter chicken sauce resembled heinz tomato soup with added cream and a very few spices. Tasteless. Naan bread was a thick chapati and pakora was onion bajjis. All awful and straight to the bin. I've tasted fabulous Indian food here for many, many years and this was, by far, the worst. I sent an email to the restaurant from which I ordered my meal via deliveroo. I've yet to receive a reply.

Staff were great and bubbly, the service was great. Unfortunately both of my dishes were extremely salty, which was a real shame as the meats were cooked amazingly. I would love to try this again I am sure this is not the norm. I did inform the person at the till and left a tip as apart from the excessive salt the experience and atmosphere was good.

Excellent food and service was our first time but won't be our last have to say the staff were super friendly and they were under a bit of pressure as it was a Saturday night at Christmas and the place was really busy

Really amazing food in a very comfortable space. We had the pakoras (veg and chicken), lamb chops, smoked chicken, and butter chicken. Everything was excellent.

We visited Chaskoo restaurant a couple of days ago and were impressed by its lovely décor. Despite it being a Tuesday evening, the place was packed, creating a lively atmosphere. The service was attentive and efficient, which made for an enjoyable experience. The food was delicious, offering a variety of Indian-inspired dishes. However, the portion sizes seemed a bit small for the price, with plates costing between £6 and £8. Overall, Chaskoo is a great spot if you’re a fan of Indian cuisine and fancy trying a range of different dishes. Just be aware that the portions might feel a little on the smaller side. Quality food and service at a great price 👌

Holy heck where are these good reviews coming from? We were visiting Glasgow for a gig and chose this place for dinner based on the good reviews but it was colossally disappointing. The venue actually looks great, when you're coming in, the decor suggests a higher calibre of restaurant than what transpired . The first thing we noticed was that the music choice was very weird for a Bombay cafe. It was all "It's Raining Men" and Abba hits blasting out like a disco from 30 years ago. Nothing Indian. Fine whatever, can live with that if the food is good but ummmm. We ordered and the food came out in less than ten minutes. There's fast service and then there's 'all this food is sitting around just waiting to be microwaved" fast service. The naan was cold and tasteless. The curries were lukewarm, over salted and similar to a cheap supermarket ready meal. The only ok thing was lamb kemma dish (which is also the filling of the lamb pakora) and despite the unpleasant curry sauces, the chicken was very tender. The dal makhani was watery and devoid of any suggestion of Indian spices/flavour. Then there was the service. Loads of staff milling around and apart from a very jolly manager, the rest of the team went about their job looking like they were hating life. Hospitality is a demanding job and I really felt for the young people working here, looking like they wished they could be absolutely anywhere else. Then the bill came, lol, £65 for dinner and two drinks. This place is just an expensive Wetherspoons and I can't for the life of me understand why it has so many - or any good reviews. Nobody asked how our food was until we were paying up and we indicated it was disappointing, he kindly offered to get us a manager or speak to the chef but really this place's whole business model is fundamentally flawed, a small pointless chat isn't going to change anything and we weren't angling for a refund or anything. Just wanted to get TF out of there ASAP. Two stars for the nice interior and well meaning waiting staff. Update on response to comments: No please don't blame this on the waiting staff. They don't need "more training" because even if they had asked us earlier, it wasn't going to change anything -the fundamental problem is that the food quality is really poor. That's not the staffs fault. It's the business model. What's needed is better quality ingredients, more herbs/spices/flavours and dishes that are made fresh in smaller batches. Being properly heated etc. Those downbeat looking staff don't need more "training", they very likely need a pay rise, more time off and a sense of being valued and appreciated in their role!

The food was good but unfortunately no chicken biryani, the portions of the food small and some dishes the flavor not enough fair , the menu has Iranian kebab , i confused it is Indian cuzine

Best ever Indian food experience in Scotland.

There was 10 of us for the inaugural CURRY CLUB, MEETUP GROUP, dinner event, run by Ian. Most of us ordered starters & Mains, but were stunned when they all arrived ...at the same time!! All the food was very good, but the Mains were getting cold, as we were eating the starters. We did complain, but we were told this is 'what we do' !! it certainly spoilt an otherwise good night. Some of our Group had dined here before, and they said it didn't happen the last time. We won't be going back!!

Warm welcome - very pleasant surroundings - good atmosphere all round- varied menu - friendly staff and good service. Food was well presented, Pakora and Samosa were excellent. Sadly we Found one main dish had too much salt, and Naan Bread was cold. Great concept but not perfect.

What can I say that has not already been said? The reviews speak for themselves! The restaurant is beautifully decorated, well appointed, clean and spacious. It's like the Tardis small on the outside and huge on the inside. The waiting staff were friendly, attentive and polite. We had no issues at all with the staff. As for the food, I think exceptional sums it up. Really nicely cooked and presented. The portions may not be large but are more than adequate for lunch. We could not fault our food. Very good value for money for what we had, just over £45 for two meals and two beers. Overall a great experience. I am a regular visitor to Glasgow and will be back. Nicely done Chaakoo!

Absolutely loved this place, very reminiscent of travelling in India 🇮🇳 we tried a few dishes, all really tasty, I couldn't resist the peshawari naan which was so so good! Highly recommended.

Couldn't comment on the food, I booked a table, girl that had very short hair took my friend and I too bar to wait for my table. And out the blue in front of everyone, told bar man don't sell her alcohol, excuse me, I can assure you I wasn't paralytic, so I walked out. Absolute disgrace. I was actually on medication

I'm really sorry to say. I had been telling people for years that Chaakoo was the best Indian restaurant in Glasgow. But what ever happened is puzzling to myself and family who visited a few times in the past. It honestly all tasted like supermarket jarred sauce. The fish and chicken was dry and plain. The sauce to accompany the meat was watery and the Masala fries sounds intriguing but it's just french fries with some masala powder sprinkled on top. The dhall was just horrible tasting soup and the garlic chilli chicken had far too much salt. Whatever you're calling nann bread is also pretty ridiculous, it's closer to a pancake and doesn't even fit the plate it's served in, Instead it's unavoidably touched by the staff who bring it over then it droops over the sides to touch the table which isn't super hygienic. Now, I expect the owner or whoever replies to every single review to do some passive aggressive comment here and it's a good tactic to put people of reviewing but honestly just please take the review on the chin and try to go back to your glory days. Edit - (Newly added comment in my predicted response to owner/social media guy) No, my entire family were not wrong about the food tasting different and terrible. Something HAS changed with your menu or chef and you shouldn't be able to live off the reputation of the restaurant once being excellent. My wife's an Asian chef and a very very good one so this isn't some random westerner who knows nothing about food leaving a comment for you. Also, your Back or Front of house team aren't going to go out and buy plates that the food can sit on without touching people's busy hands or dirty tables so I'd like to just point out how fake and ungenuine all your responses are to reviewers. I loved this restaurant not so long ago. Chaakoo has went from my top Indian restaurant to the worst (IMO) in just a few years.

El café Chaakoo , el interior es muy bueno y me recordó a un café en Bombay . La comida era muy buena. Habíamos pedido del menú establecido para el almuerzo , curry de cordero y pollo al curry de ajo junto con pollo tandoori ahumado y tandoori paneer. También nos dio dos naan de ajo y patatas fritas picantes. Todo era auténtico. El cordero era muy tierno y húmedo, además el ajo naan era muy suave y sabroso. Las bebidas aquí son muy refrescantes. Había pedido té de durazno helado. Sin duda recomiendo probar este café.

Lovely food , been a fair few times and not had a bad dish. It's a wee bit different from the usual so don't expect regular pakora for example. The thali's are great value. Downsides would be the awkward seating , table legs are in the way for larger parties leading to booths that aren't the best. Service wise , a wee reminder to ask before just taking away what you assume are finished dishes and the table napkins are absolutely useless, those are cocktail napkins at best , utterly useless for something as mess inducing as a curry.

Horrible restaurant I think so they are getting lots of fake reviews with money. Staff is rude and they intimate that you need to get a separate bowl of curry for each person, they oversell there for by saying so. They do serve really small portions which costs you fortune. The is not a real indian restaurant because they lack hospitality, test of food and portion size of food, normally we get this all in good indian restaurant. Please don't go.....

Food was good, big enough portions as we are not big eaters we ordered 3 different curry, rice each small salad and nan bread, we was stuffed😊😊 can't thank enough for lovely people working there for such a care with my son. The food here was great, everything was tasty, well prepared & the atmosphere was very nice. Although the table was sticky and it was disappointing to see that a service charge was added to the bill - this isn’t America. It’d just be better to incorporate the charge into the items on the menu.

My friends and I went for a dinner on Saturday night. As expected the place was busy and had a good vibe. We are vegetarians plus egg allergy, so the manager gave us the complete allergen guide which really helped us while placing the order. The food was amazing we tried the Dal Makhani, Aloo Gobhi, Chana Mushroom, Garlic Naan and few cocktails and everything was amazing. Our serve Siana was really wonderful she went 3-4 times to confirm the ingredients based on our allergy and request with the bar and kitchen and did all this with a smile. She was very helpful and welcoming with a lovely smile whenever we made any request. The other manager (I assume) was also really kind to offer a complementary Saag Gravy for us to try with the Naan. Will definitely recommend and will be back! Great Service! Great Food!

We went in Friday lunchtime, was seated quickly. Staff were polite attentive and served up fabulous food. Wine was also good. Very atmospheric restaurant, toilets were clean and tidy. Looking forward to returning soon.

The restaurant itself is so well done up with a tasty menu to match. I really would recommend this place, especially those with dietary requirements as there are amazing gluten-free options. Our server, Jamie, was super helpful when it came to their menu and allergen knowledge. We accidentally picked an item that wasn’t gluten free and they spotted it for us! Before coming back a couple more times as we kept picking items with gluten or just couldn’t decide. Jamie was an amazing server and made our visit 5 star without a doubt. Will definitely be visiting again due to the exceptional service received. Thank youuu !!!

Absolutely delicious food and great service. We ordered a range of dishes from kebabs to curry and all were super tasty. I really enjoyed the food and the service we received was top notch. The restaurant was busy but the waitress didn't miss a beat. I live in London but would go back to Glasgow just to eat here!

Has a nice, clean, 1800s India vibe and the food is excellent. Arguably the best saag paneer I’ve had. Chai tea is absolutely divine. I come to Glasgow a couple times a year for work and this will be a regular stop for company dinners.

First review of our new curry club. Chaakoo has set a very high benchmark. We had a voucher that got us a 30% discount and a pakora selection as a start that came right after our lovely Kingfisher pints. Loved the tandoori prawns. The portion sizes are also ideal. Overall we rated it 8.5/10. 🇬🇧

I ordered through delivero on 22 sept I got my food and the food smells very fishy, Literally very fishy. I tried to call the restaurant about the same but no one responded, I ordered before from here, the food was really nice but this time they failed. And also didn’t responded to the calls too, I called around 20 times, But no luck. Very disappointed.

We got here at opening for lunch and we’re so impressed! From the strawberry lassi to the garlic naan, everything was delicious, presented beautifully, and worked with the other dishes. Our favorites were the lamb samosas with tamarind chutney and the masala fries. A fun date night out or light meal if you want.

Had a late lunch with my girlfriend at Chaakoo Glasgow. We're both vegetarians so ordered paneer butter masala, garlic naan, butter naan and cauliflower side, gravy and side were fantastic would absolutely recommend but, not sure what's going on with the naans. They were for sure not made in a tandoor. I asked Ivy who I think was the manager he bought a crispy naan later for me but, It was from a flat pan as well. But food was great overall. Highly recommended.

As a first time visitor the place is a visual feast. Quirky interior, incredibly busy with some great staff. The food was incredible and it's well worth a trip here. Top tip - make sure you book as it gets VERY busy.

Absolutely disgusting service!! I ordered food from them through deliveroo and there was a WHOLE PLASTIC piece in my Raita dish, which is health and safety matter!!! Restaurant had been contacted by Deliveroo, but they never bothered to call back (claiming they never heard anything) Deliveroo was kind enough to compensate me from their part, but they said that restaurant should contact me, and as my right restaurant needed to refund me. So I called the restaurant and asked for refund and the 'manager' Jamie did not want to refund!! Had to actually fight for my refund for something like this, absolutely disgusting service from manager! It is my right as a customer to get a refund back from a case like this. I had to actually FIGHT for my refund from this manager. I told the manager I would call safety and health, which after he refunded me and then on top of that did not want to refund me the full amount of what I paid on deliveroo! Absolutely ridiculous and disgusting behaviour and customer service! I would NEVER EVER recommend this place!!

First of all, it is advisable to make a reservation. We waited at the bar for 30 minutes, which was ok too. Food perfect, best Chicken Marsala ever. You order the main course and side dish separately, which was very pleasant. Staff extremely friendly despite stress, hence 5 stars.

This is an absolute must while in Glasgow. I ordered Saag Paneer and Dum Biryani along with garlic naan. The food is incredible- the flavors are amazing. Spicy enough without overwhelming the dish. They make a solid cocktail as well. I ordered the earl grey gimlet. I’m saving this place for the next time I’m in Glasgow.

I ordered one paneer butter masala and each garlic naan and normal naan. The garlic butter naan was burned and the normal naan was not soft and it was crispy like pappad. Not worth the price.

The experience of dining there in the middle of the winter weather is beautiful. The food is delicious and is available to you in options such as a tray and it contains two types: meat and chicken and a rice dish, but the quantity is suitable for those who follow a diet. The quantities are very small and the price is expensive.

Excellent place for a light meal and cocktails. The butter chicken is superb and has a great selection of veggie options.

Gorgeous place, amazing food, lovely staff, can't recommend enough!

The restaurant is Indian-Iranian. We ordered meat biryani for 8 pounds and chicken butter for 8 pounds. We got small plates smaller than a bowl of soup. We asked for extra white rice and chicken tikka. The food is really delicious, but the size of the plates is very small, and for a moment you feel like you have entered a bar, but it is a restaurant with a bar atmosphere.

After much research on the internet we chose this restaurant because of its rating. The food here is very good, however we ordered the Keralan Monkfish to be advised it was not available and perhaps we would like the Jinga Kushrang instead. That was ordered. When it arrived it contained four overcooked prawns and lots of green peppers etc. We spoke with our waiter who said it was the luck of the draw, I said I thought £4 a prawn was excessive. He was not concerned at all and made no apologies. As a result I did not leave a ten percent tip which is my normal standard. Shame it spoiled our experience. In my opinion they should have removed this item from the bill.

Lovely authentic Indian/ Iranian food just when we were craving some. Tried the Lamb Kebab, the Murgh Kala Mirch and Dal Makhani, with Naan and Jeera Rice. All hit the spots. Slightly spicy and absolutely tasty. Service is excellent, fast turn around and lovely atmosphere

Firstly what impressed us was the inside of the building, The bar staff and waiters and waitresses were so friendly and helpful, The food was amazing, I would highly recommend this place to come and enjoy

My boyfriend and I visited the restaurant for dinner. Overall we had good experience. My boyfriend ordered chicken tikka masala which was 5/5. My butter paneer masala was spicy. We also ordered bombay aloo which is highly recommended. The staffs are friendly. When you order the food staff will tell you that they come in smaller portions and will ask you to order few different items. However I felt that the portion size was sufficient for one individual. Prices are low here compared other Indian restaurants in Glasgow. Worth giving it a try!

Food was great and it didn't disappoint. The environment of the restaurant is awesome but the service wasn't the best. Two of the waitresses were actually very rude and another spent the night looking in the mirror. One of them actually threw the dishes on the table a few times. We spilled a glass of water on the table and requested a cloth to clean, no one came to help it was us cleaning the table with napkins while the waitress was looking at us and at the mirror... A bit of a joke. Service at Chaakoo west end never disappointed like this one. Hope management can do something about as it is a great place.

The foods much tastier that it's photographed here. Good value, tasty food. The place has always been very busy when I've attended so a little loud and that does tend to make service a smidge slower, however not enough to put me off going.

Lovely lunch, great food and friendly service

We stopped here for dinner and could not be happier that we did. The food and drinks were excellent. Smaller portions that are great for sharing. Would especially recommend the Goan Cooler, paneer butter masala, and the Aloo Gobi.

This is our second trip to Chaakoo this year when visiting Glasgow. Can’t recommend this place enough, food is amazing , service is great and well priced. We can’t wait to come back again! A special shoutout to Caroline who served us on the evening of Saturday 3rd August. She was super efficient and friendly! 😊 the staff in here are always great, another reason we’d keep coming back. Probably the single best Saag paneer and Naan combo I’ve had. Naan was light, saag paneer was simply melt in your mouth goodness. The pakora were good but nothing special. The star was clearly the saag and I’d go for just that one dish. Fun decor and interesting drink selection.

Excellent food. No poppadoms. Garlic nan not crispy enough for my taste. Apart from that no complaints. Chops were especially fantastic

We were pleasantly surprised by the deliciousness of the food here. Great ambience as well. We ordered Daal Makhni and Saag Paneer (Palak Paneer) for mains along with some breads. The really know what they they are cooking! This is one of the best Daal Makhni's we have had. Note : Their potions are small and the service person explains it as well so order with that in mind.

The food was delicious, really good, we were told to order a few tapas styles dishes, we only ordered 2 each and it was plenty, thought they would be tiny but a good size. Highly recommend based on the food and service. We were served by Aaron, who was lovely and professional. My moan is the music is too loud. On first glance it's a little tatty the menus are old and sticky, horrible cutlery and serviette holders, if they replaced these this would be 5* all over.

Why is it when a restaurant becomes popular they think its ok to bump their customers? 3 lamb chops with some smelly onions for 11 quid?? And THREE pieces of chicken in the main curry. I won't ever be back in person or delivery. Shocking. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU ARE HUNGRY!!!! P.s the chops weren't even luke warm. Stone cold. And the garlic nan was a soggy doughey pile of mush. A good restaurant at one point thats nose dived off a cliff! Horrendous Update on your pathetic reply... i didn't order from the "small plates" section i ordered from mains. And I've been puking for days since an hour after eating it. You don't even deserve a star but I'd rather give you 1 than not be able to leave a review at all. This is the second time I've had food poisoning from you and I'm contacting the council about it. Rotten rancid chicken that wasn't even fit for a dog. I will be taking it further this time. Absolutely disgusting
