We stayed here for 3 nights whilst walking Hadrian’s Wall and visiting Vindolanda for a day. We had a fantastic stay. Huge rooms, very friendly staff and a central location, including the AD122 bus stop being just by the hotel. Food was wonderful, including the best breakfast menu we saw on this trip. My daughter is vegan and they had a great selection of items she could eat. Sunday lunch was excellent. Highly recommended.

Stayed here for 6 nights on a HF walking holiday. The stand out is the staff who are so keen to please and always have a smile. The rooms are comfortable with plenty of hot water after a long walk along Hadrians Wall. The food deserves a special mention as it was delicious and varied. The Sunday Lunch was excellent with a great selection of vegetables and a Huge Yorkshire pudding. We also had a tapas evening which was great and to finish the week we had a Roman banquet with a talk about Roman weapons and uniforms. All in all a delightful stay and would recommend it to everyone. Thanks go to David and all his staff as they were so kind, helpful and attentive

A great place to stay while walking Hadrian’s Wall. We had a very comfortable and large bedroom with a very impressive en-suite bathroom. Lots of history to the building itself and a lovely village to check out. We enjoyed a fine roast dinner on Sunday afternoon and slept very well, followed by a fine breakfast. We definitely recommend for staying in the area.

We had a delicious meal this evening. Rather than have main courses we made up a tapas meal from the excellent selection of starters. We loved everything but particularly the Burata salad with caramelised peaches and Parma ham and the baked Camembert with honey. Sadly we were too full to have dessert but the menu offered a good choice.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this small but very comfortable and welcoming hotel that is situated in the heart of Haltwhistle. All staff were superb, nothing was too much trouble. The choice at breakfast was very good, including Full English, pancakes, cereals etc. Special thanks go to Grethe for the hot kipper breakfasts! We enjoyed three evening meals in the restaurant which were excellent & good value.

The hotel is ideally located for visiting the Roman Wall and the historic sites within easy reach of the hotel. Whether using a car, cycle or just walking. The hotel has been refurbished but the quirky bit is that the old billing revelied during the refurbishment have been made features as this was originally an old coaching inn before the railways arrived. The rooms are clean and comfortable. The courtyard rooms have an idividual sauna so you can ease the muscles after a hard days walk or cycle. Bed comfortable and up narrow stairs at mezzanine level. Hard to access if you are a large overweight person. The breakfast is of good quality local produce and when the plate arrives it looks as if there is enough to feed a Roman legion. It was enough to keep me filled for the rest of the day. The whole town has not yet been fully wired for fibre broadband so getting a signal in parts of the hotel not easy. The lodge upstairs quiet and relaxing. Peeped into some of the upstairs bedrooms and they are large and some with sofas in them. Would recommend this as a pleasant place to stay.

Very friendly hotel with lovely room. We had been hiking and did not get back until late but the manager had saved us some food which was delicious. The breakfast the following morning was excellent too. The staff were friendly helpful and very efficient. A very good place to stay. Only downside was no draught beer which would have gone down a treat after our walk.

Got a free upgrade on arrival as inclement weather meant a few cancellations!! Room was superb (suite) upstairs apartment with whirlpool bath & was spotless. We also booked in for an evening meal which was also superb, the cheese board was exceptional. Breakfast was also really good! Would definitely recommend anyone to stay here. I tip my Hat to Dave & his staff 👏👏 Special mention to our waitress Olivia who give us all local knowledge and was very friendly In and around Town.. We also ate at the Manor house also, really good pub food, had a Gin in the little gin bar in the square with street food available but we already ate & a pint in the Black Bull which was a tad too busy but nice enough outside.

The Centre of Britain Hotel far exceeded all my expectations at every level. So much so I rebooked again for my next business stay 2 weeks later. From my arrival, tired after a long days tour hosting my own clients, met with a genuine warm welcome and shown to my room - wow what a suite in a nearby adjoining building. It was spacious and most comfortable with pillows I’d not slept so soundly before. Small fridge & TV In adjacent lounge area. Dinner was prepared for me and that was outstanding. I felt relaxed, cared for and happy. The breakfast was delicious and again served in a comfortable quiet spacious dining room. The staff were perhaps the best too, the best most sincere customer focused I’ve yet met at any / all hotels to date. Christine and her younger colleagues well trained motivated and happy, top of their game for certain. When in the area again I would only seek out this hotel , for business or leisure and will recommend to others for the reasons above. Thank you.

We returned for a second helping of the fantastic hospitality that we received last September when we booked in for the Best of Hadrian’s Wall with HF Holidays. We contacted the hotel ahead to request room 3 as we wanted to use the sauna. The room was perfect, it was spacious, clean and well stocked with towels, coffee, clean bins etc. the bathroom had a jacuzzi bath, large fast shower and a sauna ❤️ Breakfast was always fresh and cooked to order. Grethe was always keen to ensure everyone had enough to sustain them until lunch 🧺 up on the wall 🥾. Generous, packed lunches 🥪 were provided to order, with extras laid out for selection. Evening meal was a treat on every night, served promptly with plenty of seasonal vegetables that were always polished off before dessert. Wasn’t disappointed when we all opted for the Danish Christmas pudding on Thursday night, didn’t get the whole almond this time but did come away with the recipe. We had five full days of full on sunshine walking 58 miles along Hadrians wall, fortunately we had a lovely breeze for the most part, there was a lot of steep and long ascents and descents which were a bit of a chore in the heat (although they felt equally as tricky in September when the weather was a lot cooler a damp.) We were fortunate to have a really good HF trail guide. Roy really knows his history and was able point out all the geological features and explain their formation and structure from end to end. We came away enriched with a better understanding of the landscape. I took every opportunity to grill him on all subjects, especially on our minibus journeys on the way back to base every afternoon. We’ll definitely return to do this holiday again, and have plans to visit the hotel for a short break in September.

The bathroom was our favourite as it had a fantastic spa bath which was very relaxing. I recently was looking for accommodation whilst I took part in a coast to coast charity cycle ride in aid of Cancer Research UK. Setting off from the East Coast I was looking for somewhere after around 50 miles. I found online and contacted the Centre of Britain Hotel, Haltwhistle, fortunately, they had a single room at a very competitive rate which included breakfast. They also informed me they had a secure lock-up to store my bicycle overnight. On arrival, I received a very warm welcome from the lady owner who offered to dry my wet cycling clothes as I had received a good soaking for the last 20 miles of my journey. This was an excellent gesture as my dry clothing was delivered to my room later that night. The room was excellent, clean, spacious and very comfortable with TV, free WIFI and tea/coffee making facilities. I dined in the hotel that night and opted for steak with a blue cheese sauce. It was one of the best steak meals I’ve had for a long time. An excellent ‘massive’ steak, lovely sauce, that came with boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, green beans, carrots, roll and bun. It was tremendous! After a good nights kip, I went for breakfast and opted for the full English, that too was tremendous 5*. Forgot to mention the dining room/restaurant was light airy, clean and a pleasure to dine in. The couple who run the hotel could not have done more for me during my stopover and their staff provided excellent service. All in all, a fantastic place to stay, especially if you are a cyclist looking for a convenient place to stay whilst attempting the coast to coast run on Hadrians Cycle path. It was tremendous! After a good nights kip, I went for breakfast and opted for the full English, that too was tremendous 5*. Forgot to mention the dining room/restaurant was light airy, clean and a pleasure to dine in.

We came here for an evening meal on the basis of a recommendation from friends. The menu was fairly limited and the bar selection also, but neither if these should have been a problem. The food was adequate (but no more than that) but our main concern was the service. We were served by a waitress who was clearly very new (her colleague confirmed this) and she was, frankly, terrified. She did her best but had clearly not been well trained (ice cubes in a glass of beer?) and was not supervised adequately. We felt very sorry for her as she was clearly trying hard.

I won't go into details because the problems were so numerous it would seem trite to try and document them. Needless to say, we are well travelled and have a wide variety of dining experiences and without doubt this was the most disappointing we've ever had. A complete disaster! AND they had the temerity to charge us for it. It did however explain why there were only two other diners (visitors) during their peak evening period. A complete shambles.(One star is one too many)

This week I wasn’t able to book accommodation as they were full but ate there with work colleagues. The food was quite simply excellent as was the service, and at very reasonable cost. I must add special thanks to David the owner who has been there for all of that time as we found ourselves unable to get a taxi back to our hotel in a nearby village several miles away, and after several attempts he very kindly drove us home. I would recommend this hotel as it never disappoints, but great service from the owner who didn’t have to help us out

I booked a meal for two on 22nd Dec. We were handed a Xmas menu . I asked if there was another menu available to be told no. On the plus side the menu looked good so we decided to go ahead. My wife ordered melon followed by salmon main course which she said was very nice. I had prawn starter with a thin sauce which I thought was poor. Main course was a tough sirloin of beef and tough Yorkshire pudding. Soggy roast potatoes and well cooked veg. We ordered a bottle of wine which was left on the table unopened. I complained about my meal and the mediocre service went downhill from that moment. We had the small cheeseboard and were asked if we wanted the bill. We pointed out that we hadn`t had our tea/coffee which was included in the menu. While drinking our tea/coffee we were again asked if we wanted the bill. To add insult to injury an additional charge was added to the bill for tea and coffee when in fact it was already part of the £80.+ cost of two meals and a bottle of wine. I pointed out the error on the bill and the reply was " I`ll double check! ". First and last visit!.

Although the call is disputed, Haltwhistle claims it is at the center of Britain. We generally seek a decent meal, not cheap eats, when traveling, and the number of restaurants offering a decent non-ethnic meal in Haltwhistle being somewhat limited, we on recommendation from our guest house tried out the nearby Centre of Britain. The food was fine, but we unfortunately were seated at a table near a scholarly fellow who was holding forth on mine explosives to a visiting businessman the entire time, rather loudly and obtrusively. All of those who survived the ordeal glanced at each other in relief when he left. The long and short is that the acoustics and layout give one no respite from the dreaded obnoxious diner.

I have dined here on several occasions during the last ten or so years and have always been impressed by all aspects of the experience. I am amazed at the variety on the menu and quality of the food. A considerable achievement for what is a fairly small establishment. There are about six to eight tables in the main dining room and a larger room where we once ate when we had six guests. This is a superb room for a special occasion meal. The decor is tasteful, uncluttered and scrupulously clean: well deserving of the top food hygiene rating which is displayed on the door.. Some other establishements in the town should display theirs! My three friends and I chose different dishes. We enjoyed the food immensely. The portions were generous. It is possible to order a glass of wine or a coffee and mints instead of one of the three set courses. Fresh water is placed on the table without a request at the beginning of the meal and wonderful homemade warm bread with ample butter is also routinely provided. The dishes were all high quality with superb sauces, fresh garnishes and a good selection of vegetables. I don't think either the food, the service or the venue could be improved upon. Definitely the best place in town and on a par with the very best places in the entire country.

A group of 25 of us sat down to evening meal. We all felt that the food was good quality, came out hot which is no mean feat when catering for a large group and the portions were bigger than some people could eat even though we'd been doing some strenuous walking during the day and were ready to eat. The staff were efficient and friendly. We had the room at the back. It was light and welcoming with its own bar. Only downside; there wasn't any 'real ale'.

We dined here in the company of a group of friends. It was a lovely dining area and as we were a large group we had the room to ourselves (well apart from one couple who had been seated there because no other table was available for them, which they had accepted).. The service got off to a slow start in that we did not take our seats at the tables at the time of the reserved time. It was approx. 15/20 mins before we were invited to take our seats. The bar area where we were waiting was very small, with limited seating, The starters were very large, well presented, and tasty. The mains were reasonable, my husband and I both had the Roast lamb which had some very thick pieces which were quite tough to cut through - the best part being the large selectioin of vegetables which were served to us with the main course. I then had Lemon Pavlova roulade for dessert and I was not impressed with this, not very lemony and all cream,. I left it!

I stayed at this hotel having spent a glorious day cycling up from South Shields. I was therefore in a great mood and ready for food. The food was not good. Started with Pate which was dry and pretty flavourless. The Lamb main course was served in an ocean of sticky sauce. Floating in the sauce were a couple of lettuce leaves with a slice of tomato and some orange. The vegetables were cold and bland. I had to ask the waitress to name the parsnip such was the odd flavour. Against my better judgement I ordered a cheese board. This comprised a huge wedge of Stilton which was served with strawberries (a first for me) and mango chutney. The cheese was flavourless and over facing. A huge disappointment after a great day in the English countryside.

Excellent food with very generous portions. Lovely service where nothing is too much trouble. This is an exceptional hotel - certainly up there among the best - where nothing is too much trouble.

A lot of businesses close early on a Saturday so be warned! Christine provides an excellent and varied menu to suit all tastes! All portions are that filling that you may not have room for the delicious puddings on offer especially if you had a starter which always include Christine's home made bread which is scrumptious!

We came for dinner (for which you need a reservation, if fills up quickly). The food was amazing! You could tell everything was relatively fresh. We had so much food during the first three courses that we didn't have room for dessert! Turned out we substituted our two desserts for two glasses of wine so nothing wasted. Seriously though, we made ourselves sick trying to finish that third course because it was so good! Our waitress was excellent, very attentive (which is a little surprising for Britain!). I would definitely eat here again.Just a note for other potential customers: The earliest dinner reservation is for 6:30pm. We ended up finishing around 8:45-9:00. After a long day hiking Hadrian's Wall, we were exhausted! But this was an excellent meal.

We went as a group of 11, it took a little while to get the starters as we had pre ordered, it should have been quicker. The food is good, with plenty of meat, though a little light on the veggies. It's the second time we've eaten here and both times have been enjoyable.Wine is reasonably priced, about what you would expect to pay.Nice decore, I personally don't like tiled floors in restaurants, if your into tiles on the floor, it makes it a little cold looking to me. It doesn't lend it's self to making a cosy atmosphere.

Eaten here twice the first time was for Christmas dinner which was not outstanding. Turkey was tough vegetables were cold, the roulade tasted strange undercooked which I informed staff of and hey took it away, I had to dash to ladies on my return I was informed they had tasted meringue and it was fine I informed them I had been ill in ladies and they just shrugged their shoulders. I paid full amount for whole meal no reduction offered. We only returned for second visit as someone had bought us a voucher and what a difference pork was beautiful staff very helpful, and dessert was wonderful. Obviously it is better going for an individual meal rather than the mass produced at Christmas.

I've eaten here a few times for special occasions and not so special ones and it's always been lovely. The food is really nice, my favourite is the duck. The staff are very friendly and professional. They like to give that personal touch like homemade bread and birthday wishes on the menu.

While the service was attentive the food was average and something that you might have eaten in 1970 with orange slices garnishing everything. Over boiled vegetables gave them a grey look and you have to have the three course menu as it is set.The wine list is good so that you can drink your disappointment at the food away. Don't know why it has such a high ranking.

We had stayed at this hotel some years ago, and we thought the dining room a good deal smarter now - everything was very well presented and the menu was interesting and the quality very good. Yes it's a bit more expensive than other restaurants in the town, but the style and cooking are better too. On the weekday night we were there it was a bit quiet and lacked some atmosphere, but on the other hand we were served promptly by pleasant staff and enjoyed a relaxing meal in the company of best friends.

Enjoyed the set menu at the restaurant one evening last week We were very impressed by the premises, beautifully laid table, and choice of food. The service did not disappoint, nor did he food. The accompanying sauces were delicious and generous in portion. The starter and main course could not be faulted. The cheese andbiscuit platter was the best I have ever seen, and even tastier to eatWe will definitely call into this restaurant when we return to the area.Would certainly recommend to others.

We were staying at the Centre of Britain Hotel for the second time, but had only experienced the wonderful breakfasts previously. We ate in the hotel restaurant for an evening meal this time and can highly recommend it, although the portions for some of the dishes were frankly overwhelming in size, although that is some people's preference these days. The service was excellent as well.

Played today, Mon 26th August, Great layout, but sadly the greens are diseased and awful, and the tee boxes are terrible, very expensive bar, and no food being served, even though there was a competition on, and the bar was busy, Sadly one to miss in the future.

We visited Hexham yesterday and found this café in the Market Place, after a lovely River Tyne walk. It was quite busy at 1pm but we didn't have to wait long for our table. The girls made us feel very welcome and worked so hard while we were there clearing tables and getting everyone seated as soon as possible. My husband had a bacon sarnie and I had a ham and mushroom omelette which was so light and fluffy, delicious. Coffees were great too. Plenty of choice on the menu and great prices. Doggy friendly too with a treat for pooch 🐾

What a welcoming, hospitable place. If you ever need cheering up, this is the place to go. We were made welcome immediately, and tony the owner had us in stiches from the start. Everyone there were so friendly, and what had started as an intended short visit, led to us staying to closing. Met some brilliant characters, who all just made our day. Dog friendly too, which was an added bonus to us. Can't recommend enough.
