Unfortunately the afternoon tea was a little disappointing for the price you pay. I’ve experienced many different afternoon teas and if you are in the area you are much better going to Wentworth Woodhouse. The service was excellent and the staff were lovely. The tea and coffee was very good, but the food itself was disappointing.

Visited Cavendish Resturant for high tea with my girlfriends to celebrate the birthday of two of my friends, Booked High Tea on a Sunday afternoon, The ambience was good, the tea and sandwiches were very good, However a bit disappointed by the service. I felt the serving lady particularly one older lady was very rude, abrupt and rushing us through the course. She almost grabbed the plate when one of our friend was still eating. Also we were not informed accurately about the extra charges for additional tea and we were shocked when the final bill was given which was much more than we expected and when looking through the breakdown, we had been charged almost £50 extra for a mug of tea which could have been avoided if it was told to us clearly and we could not even finish the tea as we were rushed to leave the table. Although the ambience was good and we had nice time, I feel this experience could have been better if the serving ladies were not rude and abrupt.

None of the cakes are made in house and are very disapointing. You can go to the local supermarket and buy most of it there for about £15 for two people, which saves about £85. They use store bought macaroons and a brand called We Love Cake, which makes a lemon and a salted caramel tart. They've added some rhubarb to the top of the lemon tart but it's was pretty obvious what brand they were using when they served the salted caramel one too... They cost about £2.50 from the supermarket so it's one heck of a mark up!! They don't even give you a whole one, they cut them into thirds. The sandwiches weren't made fresh either. The bread was staling and the filing was bleeding into the bread making the insides soggy. They'd obviously been sat for a while. The waitress we had was nice, she seemed geniuinely lovely and knowledgable. It was birthday and they did bring out a plate with Happy Birthday written on it, served with the We Love Cake salted caramel tart cut into 2 quarters - a nice touch degraded by the supermarket cake. The palette cleanser servied before the sandwhiches was lovely, a cheese and pesto dish made in house and it was exquisite, the exact caliber I expected for the cost. The scones were also nice and seemed fresh made, but neither this or the palette cleaner made up for the low quality sandwhiches and basic desserts. I expected better and have had better elsewhere for less money.

We came Saturday afternoon for an early Mother's day treat as a family of three. First impressions were excellent. Mum was worried she'd be cold after I told her it was converted stables, but it was quite the opposite. We were very comfortable where we sat and was able to people watch over the courtyard. We were greeted and seated and our coats hung up. Lovely touch. Our server, Petra, recommended speciality teas to compliment with each course and explained the menu. My sister and I took up the recommended teas and were very pleased. In fact, we forgot to ask where we could buy the tea leaves ourselves - nevermind! The first course, winter vegetable soup was beautiful. Very thick and extremely tasty with the parsnip crisps. Wonderful! Second, was the sandwiches. My sister was able to have vegetarian while Mum and I had the main offering. I was slightly put off with the bread, it was dense and stale in places. I think, maybe the heel of the loaf. Those were left as were not enjoyable. The fllings were good, I enjoyed the pickle and chutney used. My sister's selection were lovely, and I regret not saying I was vegetarian too! The sorbet. Oh.my. giddy. Heart! Cherry and kirsch. We all loved it! 😍 Absolutely fabulous 👌 Scones were beautiful, along with the cream and jam. Baileys chocolate cake was the best of the cakes, or maybe the cranberry blonde? Oh my! Just amazing! Mum wasn't keen on the cakes. She may have preferred a light sponge to have been included, she felt the cakes were too heavy for her. Would we come again? Oh yes! But I'd choose the vegetarian option for the sandwiches next time. 😊

Lovely experience dining here recently. Beautiful location, tasteful decor (if a little dusty in parts), attentive and friendly staff, tasty food (we had lunch). Not good for vegetarians; only four main courses on offer, one being veggie. Toilets could do with being checked a little more often. However, overall it was an extremely pleasant dining experience.

I took my grandparents for afternoon tea to celebrate them both turning 80. The booking process was simple and we were able to park close to the restaurant, though signage could have been better on the grounds. The Cavendish is located in the former stables, alongside an excellent gift shop filled with wonderful artisanal items, and a cafe. The restaurant is light and airy, with lots of windows, courtyard views, and high vaulted ceilings. Contrary to other reviews, we did not find the restaurant chilly at all despite the bitter cold outside - in fact, when we entered we commented on how warm and cosy it was. The decor is simple and bright; it feels like a contemporary twist on a stately home, with upholstery and Wedgwood tableware evoking some of the wallpaper designs found in Chatsworth House. We were served by Adele with help from Natalie, both of whom were excellent in every way. Adele was attentive throughout and nothing was too much trouble, ensuring we always had fresh hot drinks with each course (I followed her recommended flight of black teas and was not disappointed, each complementing the food items beautifully). Most importantly, we were made to feel comfortable - no mean feat when dining on the grounds of a stately home! I must confess I expected the service to be snooty, stuffy and intimidating, but this assumption couldn't have been further from the truth. Their warm personalities and accents like ours made us feel at home, and reminded us of all the everyday folk that have looked after Chatsworth throughout its history - kitchen staff, cleaners, gardeners, etc... The food offer was excellent - we started with a spiced parsnip soup, which was delicious. The portion size (an espresso cup) was very small, but most people already struggle to finish an afternoon tea so we were grateful that this extra course wasn't overwhelming. Each of us had five finger sandwiches (ploughman's, ham, salmon, egg and coronation chicken), which felt generous. All were well made with ingredients that tasted fresh and high quality. This was followed by a delightfully refreshing cherry kirsch sorbet before the dessert course arrived. Alongside the traditional scones with jam and clotted cream, we were served an indulgent berry posset and petits fours including chocolate cake, raspberry blondie, and a citrus tartlet. As an extra surprise, Adele brought out two macarons for my grandparents, wishing them a happy birthday on behalf of Chatsworth House. It was a lovely touch that helped make the experience even more special. We were defeated by the afternoon tea and could not eat most of the petits fours; Adele packaged these up for us to take home in individual boxes wrapped in twine. Like most afternoon teas, it's perhaps more expensive than it should be. While the quality was excellent, £150 for sandwiches and cake between three people is quite a lot of money (for me!). But with excellent service, beautiful atmosphere, and little touches like the soup and sorbet, it starts to feel justified for a special occasion. Perhaps another way to make the cost feel worthwhile would be to provide free entry to the gardens. My grandparents were certainly over the moon with the experience and so for me it was ultimately worth the money. I think it's perfect for a couples treat, or for groups of friends who split the cost. It's worth repeating that the service provided by Adele and Natalie is really what elevated this from a standard afternoon tea to a memorable and joyful experience. They are a tribute to the estate team and I hope their value is recognised and rewarded. We'll certainly come again next time we're celebrating.

We booked Cavendish Restaurant as we had received Afternoon Tea Vouchers from our children earlier in the year. So we were excited to come on 27th November as it was my birthday on the 26th and my daughters on 28th so thought we would give her and her boyfriend a treat too. To start with the parking situation for disabled is no existent as we were moved from a bay that was free and told it was for staff, we I find bizarre. So we had to park on the graveled car park and try and push my husband's wheelchair between us as it kept getting stuck and no help from the marshall who stood and watched. Then the Afternoon Tea arrived and I have to admit it was the most expensive but yet the worst experience we had ever had, the soup was served in a tiny coffee cup ever, the sandwich's came with pretty must cheese or sauce on them, and not very obliging when asked if we could just have some more egg mayonnaise ones! I would not return again as the £99 bill at the end was completely unjustified in the food we had been served, we obviously just paid for the surroundings of being in a beautiful building.

Very busy outside in the courtyard of Chatsworth House today, kiddies and families with pups enjoying the sun but we wanted a bit of a treat so DH had booked the Cavendish restaurant for lunch. Going in it was a different world! quiet, serene, smoothly organised and luxurious...perfect tbh. A lovely table by the window was offered and drinks soon brought. Delicious fresh bread with a selection of flavored butters (all good) was followed by one of the best lunches. I had fresh delicious pea soup with lemon cream drizzle followed by a huge main of smoked haddock/prosciutto roulade and layered potatoes with a lemon cream sauce so light I was forced to eat the lot! DH had Gravlax and rhubarb starter ( smooth and well balanced) followed by Ox cheek and bone marrow infused mash as recommended by our fantastic server Petra. This was a star dish the cheek was a large portion that was melt in the mouth ! Dh managed a pudding of apple frangipani cake with clotted cream! fresh coffee was complimentary. £78 is not a cheap lunch but.... it was brilliant Value!!!! with full tummies we watched a lot of delicious looking afternoon teas pass by which I would go back and try another time. Well done excellent service by everyone and delicious food .

Visited today to celebrate my Mum’s 60th birthday. We were a party of 4 and a high standard was set from the start. The door was opened to us on approach, the hostess greeting us with a polite smile and seating us promptly. Our coats were whisked away, and we were presented with beautiful menus and advised how the afternoon tea would proceed (spoiler - the food is not all presented at once… it takes a good couple of hours!), and were shown a list of available loose leaf teas to choose from at our leisure. We opted to splurge and upgrade to the Champagne Afternoon tea, since we were celebrating a significant birthday for my Mum, and warned our wonderful waitress Angela that we would be asking her to take a fair few group pictures! Our group included 1 very fussy eater, and two with medically mandated dietary requirements, which we advised of both at time of booking, and when we were seated. We decided to be brave and throw caution to the wind (accepting adaptations for dairy and caffeine free as required) and went with the flow, trusting the expertise of the team. We were also offered the choice of “pairing” our tea selections to each course (like pairing wine to a meal) - we decided to give it a go, with the assurance that we could switch to the tried and tested “English Breakfast tea” at any time… Pairing our tea turned out to be the best decision we have ever made, and a choice all 4 of us would thoroughly reccomend. With each different tea, we were given fresh china & strainers “so you can truly appreciate the different flavours” Throughout our visit, Anglea was fantastic. She was attentive without being intrusive, shared a fantastic knowledge of the different teas availabe, and could not have been more helpful and fantastic. Her charm and attention to detail made a highly anticipated visit truly memorable. Additional highlights included - the goats cheese, proscuitto and fig jelly sandwiches (divine!), the gentle soundtrack providing a pleasant ambiance to the room (especially when the Downton theme started playing as we poured our first cup of tea - 4 very giddy Downton fans thoroughly approved!), the provison of dairy free pattiserie for the sweet course IN ADDITION to the usual goodies on offer, and the beautiful surprise of a “Happy 60th Birthday” plate because “our team wanted to recognise and clebrate the occasion with you wonderful ladies” Well worth the price tag. Definately something everyone should indulge in given half a chance!

The Cavendish is the smarter of the dining options available at Chatsworth, it enjoys a nice setting in the former stables & has been well modified & decorated. Service was a delight. You can only book a table if you are having Afternoon Tea, priced at a whopping £45 per person, but we managed to get a walk-in table for lunch. Food didn't thrill. Their sandwiches are made with unbuttered doorstep thick bread, so are were rather dry & tasteless. My honey, blue cheese & walnut salad had neither blue cheese or walnuts in it!!

We decided to book afternoon tea during our visit to the opening day of Chatsworth Christmas Market. Afternoon tea at the Cavendish is outstanding and even better at this time of year with the magic of Christmas and stunning decorations. The new afternoon tea was launched yesterday and was superb, from the soup to start, the sorbet in between courses, the sandwiches and cakes. The peach tea was a great choice of tea for me. The Cavendish is small and intimate and the spacing of the tables well thought out. To top off a lovely afternoon, there was a quartet playing in the market as we walked through to leave. We will be back at the Cavendish soon.

We have been coming here for a few years and its always been one of those places you can come to where you know its going to be good. Unfortunately there seems to have been a shift, with a focus on Afternoon Tea instead. You can no longer book a table, unless you want afternoon Tea. Driving for an hour and a half now on the off chance they have a table is a little off putting. The food and service has always been the centrepiece, however the menu is now much reduced again with a focus on Afternoon tea. Gone are any side dishes, sharing platters that they used to have. Sandwiches not a year ago for instance were served with Crisps and Fresh Salad and you could always add sides if you felt you wanted more. This is no longer the case. The excuse we were given by the staff is that they were short staffed however, during our time in the restaurant we have never seen so many waiters and waitresses - to the point that we were shown to our table, served drinks and food by different members of the team. Service was slow at best with so many members of the team stood around chatting I don't mean this to sound overly negative but when you are used to a place being so good you just don't expect it to slip.

On the basis of a lunch eaten here on July 14th, the Cavendish has taken covid-19 in its stride and is well worth booking when you come to visit the gardens (the House remains closed as I write). There is a considerable sense of professionalism in the approach to the virus with, heavens be praised, no gimmicks such as menus to scan on your phone - here they focus on menus disposed of between customers, well spaced tables, waiting staff with very good PPE, and sensible ideas like minimizing who handles items such as cutlery, plates etc. The food is good English cooking; not a lot of frills but a great deal of competence and a few surprises, such as the rather fine lightly pickled slaw. If the menu is on the 'burger/salad plus' side, well it's a really fine burger and really excellent salad. Not gourmet, but good for all that - and it does take skill to make and serve a burger as good as this. The wine list is short but when you see names like Auvigue and Ruca Malen you know you're in good hands. Not expensive either, the wines. All in all then, a really rather good experience and we felt both safe and very happy. £40 a head for two courses each, including a full bottle of the best white on the list.

Nestled away in the old stable block, this restaurant is worth a visit after a long walk around the house and gardens. NB you do not have to visit the house or gardens to go to the Cavendish but may need to pay for parking,The menu was limited to around 10 dishes from a burger, to ploughman's and Caesar salad, to chicken supreme and beef bourguignon when we visited. We opted for the burger and chicken supreme - both very tasty and good quality, with good portion sizes.Dessert was a trio of honey - honey cake, honeycomb and ice cream which was very good.As per the food, drinks list isn't that varied but has enough to choose from and should cater for all tastes.Service can be a bit slow , but on the plus side you certainly dont feel rushed. Taken here for a birthday lunch and treated our children (10 and 13) to their first tasting menu. We all loved every minute of it. First mention goes to all the lovely people who looked after us. Every single member of staff was outstanding, delightful. There was a perfect ratio of staff to diners. Attentive yet not stifling. Absolutely spot on. The dining room is beautiful. Classic not contemporary. Tables nicely spaced. Must mention the chairs as they were so comfortable. Restaurants so often overlook the need for comfy chairs. The fire was alight and it felt cosy and inviting. Views over Chatsworth Estate in the mist with the sun peaking through were a bonus. The food was stunning both visually and in flavour. Great combinations and a really well put together menu. We looked forward to each course and were left very satisfied. Again the waiters service and descriptions of each course were superb. It made the whole experience really special. The children were totally at ease and part of our enjoyment was seeing the ear to ear grins on their faces. A wonder leisurely lunch which is how we like it. Drinks in the lounge afterwards to finish. Decorated beautifully for Christmas. This was a wow lunch for us. Can not recommend highly enough. We will definitely return when in the peaks.

It has long surprised me that an historic house of the size and magnificence of Chatsworth does not have a restaurant that matches the standards of the rest of the estate. We had hoped that the Cavendish might remedy this: its menu looks interesting, and the setting is ideal - a part of the converted stable block. But today's visit suggests that the efforts of the kitchen are being dissipated by a lack of organisation and professionalism at the front of house. We arrived, with a booking, and were acknowledged rather than welcomed: basically, "OK, I can se your name here on my list". Our order was taken within a few minutes . The menu has a notice that all food is freshly prepared and so delays may occur. So we asked the server how long we might expect to wait; she told us it might be up to half an hour. As there are no specific starters/anitpasti or whatever on the menu, we therefore ordered a basket of bread and glasses of water to bridge the gap until our main dishes (filled oatcakes) might arrive. We also specified that the tea that we ordered should arrive with the main course and not so far in advance of it that it would be cold or consumed before we ate.The bread and water arrived promptly, and the main dishes followed well within the predicted 30 minutes. So far so good. But the tea did not arrive until we asked for it, and it was clear that it had been forgotten and had been made only when and because we chased it up. And the side salad that I ordered did not arrive at all. When I pointed this out the server did not respond that it was ready and would come out immediately; it has obviously been completely forgotten. So I cancelled it as I was more than halfway through the oatcake, and it did not appear on the bill. The oatcakes and their fillings were very good. The tea was also very good, which is unusual. Very few places know how to brew speciality teas properly. Most make fine teas to a strength suitable for a builder's mug on a cold November morning. Here the China and India teas were brewed perfectly. It is a pity that we cannot recommend the restaurant as highly as its food and drink would deserve. It was busy but not full; we had a reservation and had not begged to be squeezed in.; every person that we dealt with was courteous and doing a job. But no-one seemed to be interested in (let alone in charge of) ensuring that guests had a good overall experience from receiving a welcome on arrival to having everything that was ordered brought to the table at the right time, or even at all. And no-one seemed at all interested in the fact that we had ben obliged to chase the tea ordered and had cancelled an order for salad. Does no-one care?Much the same range of food is available at the Estate Farm Shop restaurant, where the views are better and the staff do seem to care. Or if you feel like a walk go to the Cafe on the Green on the Chatsworth side of Baslow: it's small; it's crowded; and the people running it make their living by making you want to come back next time (which we will).

A course in customer care would be useful for the reminder. This isn't a one off experience, happens regularly. So now we order drinks only, no food. No restaurant meals. Better food and service at Cafe on the Green after a stroll through Chatsworth grounds. Buck up please.

Having been to the Cavendish many times and enjoyed a varied menu each time today was a disappointment. I struggled to find something that excited me. Most other times I have struggled to choose one thing . So disappointed. The meal i chose, ploughmans was nice but the lack of choice spoilt it. Bring back the set menu. Service was good but not offered water, the napkins are now not linen and the whole experience seems just run of the mill. Sadly I don't think we will be back again.

Popped in here for lunch while visiting Chatsworth with a friend. This place was pretty posh (I suppose all of Chatsworth is!) The customer service was amazing, Kath our server was lovely. I had the Derbyshire oatcake with mushroom and it was absolutely amazing. My friend got one of the burgers and gave it high praise too. Would really recommend this restaurant!

A lovely setting and we were made to feel special. The selection of sandwiches and cakes were incredibly tasty, the Champagne was delicious too! There was so much to eat between the two of us, they kindly provide you with a box to take anything you can't manage back home to eat. It was all very filling! The staff are friendly, efficient and helpful.

Visited the restaurant without booking as it wasn't full. We had the Kalahari with chilli jam ,the chicken with cream, mushroom and asparagus and new potatoes. For dessert I had the chocolate and line tart with mango sorbet and Mum had the strawberry meringue with coulis(I forget it's correct title but it looked sensational.

Usually this restaurant is well worth a visit. However this time we were disappointed in the menu. A new menu had just been introduced and whilst I appreciate it was designed for summer I felt it lacked variety. Apart from burger this was the only hot dish on the menu where usually there would be a choice of hot dishes including meat and fish with vegetables. I do think customers still like a hot lunch and are not always looking for the salad options. I think if the chef just introduced a couple more dishes to the menu it would be better.

The cafe in Chatsworth is really very good so we returned with a restaurant booking weeks later to try it out. Three courses costs £25 and that's pretty decent value for what you get. Trouble is, you're spoilt for choice around there and Fischers in Baslow or the Peacock at Rowsley (or indeed the Devonshire arms Beeley) are a better bet.

Drove for an hour and a half for an anniversary meal in this amazing location. The Maitre'd was lovely and the pony tailed waitress very efficient, polite & clear. The environment in converted stables is done really well, though furnishings a little dated & felt more cafe than restaurant.

I have been using the conservatory since it was first introduced and it has to have the best views of any restaurant in Britain and its attraction was enhanced by the quality of food and service, The views are still as good but the rest of the deal has gone off more than somewhat.

We intended to eat at Beeley, but The Devonshire Arms was closed so we continued walking up the valley hoping that the Chatsworth cafe would be open. We were very glad to find that it was. I usually avoid these kind of places finding them to be poor value, but Chatsworth was a very pleasant surprise. The food was not cheep but the quality more than made up for it. The baguettes of goats cheese and beetroot were excellent. The cakes were also very nice and finished it with a big hot chocolate to restore our spirits and get us back over the hill to Bakewell. Total bill was around £30, but for delicatessen quality, we were very happy.

I really enjoyed the pre booking which made it easy to just arrive and dine. The service was a little slow and they didn’t have a separate menu for kids even though they offer a kids meal which resulted many questions before we could order. They forgot to add spoons for us to stir our tea. Overall food was amazing. We would have more savory foods and less cakes.

We had an excellant lunch during a visit to Chatsworth. The food and service was really good in a pleasant room away from the crowds in the old stables. Visited with my wife and two family members we all had different meals and were all delighted. I tried a glass of the house red wine and it was very pleasant indeed, highly recommended. We choose from the set menu (3 courses for £25.50 per person) the selection was a little limited but the food was to a very good standard. All in all a very pleasant lunch & worthy of a return date.

I found the menu a little strange. We shared a lovely appetizer of chipolata sausages in a tomatoes. My partner had pork belly which looked good. I chose mussels in the house beer - awkward to eat as pot too deep and the mussels very small. Deserts are sort of sharing plates but they were quite nice. Service very formal, but slow and impossible to catch anyone's attention as they just kept looking anyway but at the customers. Overall enjoyed it - but if you compare with Blenheim's formal offering you lose hands down

Nicely set out informal restaurant in the corner of the old stable block. Good but not extensive menu. Rather strange habit of bringing the starters on shared plates even though they are different orders - totally confused us. Food was served quickly and courteously and not excessively priced.

We had lunch for 2 in the Cavendish. 2x starters, mains and desserts. The calamari was fantastic and the halloumi parcel was great - we also had hot drinks (the single serve teapots are a lovely touch) and a glass of champagne, because...why not! The mini desserts were really tasty and a lovely touch to end a really satisfying lunch. The restaurant is a bright and welcoming space and our server Jane was attentive and talked us through the menu. The supervisor was out in the restaurant checking in with all the tables and was clearly really in tune with what was happening - what was working well and any tweaks that needed to be made. Overall a really nice afternoon - we will definitely be back.

Booked an afternoon tea as a birthday treat. There were several other people in the restaurant which was nice as there was a good atmosphere in the room. We booked a table in the elegant Cavendish Restaurant following a walk, as a birthday treat. Far from being the 'stuffy' place I had half expected, this was friendly and relaxed: an atmospheric setting with good food well cooked – a haven from the hoards of Peak District holidaymakers! We treated ourselves to a crisp glass of white wine while our lunch was being prepared, then really enjoyed a light Niçoise salad with salmon that was deliciously moist with just a hint of smoke. The perfect summer lunch; well worth a visit.

The food was dreadful and expensive. Can’t say it any plainer. Schnitzel was burnt and poorly presented. Pasted was soggy. The very worst was the waffles which had been microwaved and were solid! Just the two us for a birthday meal with one drink each and it cost £91!
