This might have been an enjoyable experience, but was marred by the fact that the pub would not accept Scottish notes - I thought we were well past this! We did query this with the bar staff and managment and were given 3 differing reasons for this unacceptable behaviour. We were in this area for 7 days and no other establishmet put us through this embracement when paying for their service. On top of this we found the prices a tad high for a normal every day pub. Not somewhere I would rush back to obviously.

Held my partners 50th birthday celebration at the Cavendish last night. Josh and the team were amazing and couldn’t have been more welcoming. Buffet was excellent and very fairly priced and at short notice because of the horrendous storms they gave over the restaurant side of the pub for us to gather rather than the outdoor space we had planned. Highly recommend for anyone wanting a nice place to hold any kind of celebration.

Family group of nine people with a wide age range (i.e. 32 to 80) had a great meal. The menu offered a good choice without being stupidly vast. The food was well-presented and excellently prepared. We had a late lunch / early dinner and so the restaurant was not busy. Service was not rushed, suggesting that the food was being properly prepared rather than re-heated from the freezer. Everyone had an enjoyable meal in an environment which encouraged a good craic. We will visit again.

Well.......... As a group of 5 we decided to visit this local village pub that offers an extensive menu for lunch on a warm sunny Sunday afternoon..... That was the 1st mistake! We didn't order anything out of the ordinary just very easy quick pub grub, nearly an hour and a half later our 'meals' arrived, 2 were OK ( can't go much wrong with a ham salad and pie and mash) the 3rd meal arrived gammon and pineapple when gammon and eggs were ordered ( easy mistake, but eggs were very clearly written on the order) the order of chicken, chips, onion rings, tomato, mushrooms and peas arrived minus the tomato, mushrooms and peas, this was pointed out and we were told they would arrive very shortly.... 20 hours later.... Still waiting! We'll save the best for last.... The homemade lasagne arrived which can only be described as a solid round lump of charcoal served with about 10 chips, the pasta had gone back to its natural state and dehydrated, the cheese on top was rock hard and try as we might we couldn't even get a knife and fork through it...... Im not expecting any kind of hospitable response from this review as I have read previous responses and they are disgusting..... And just in case it's suggested that there is anything wrong with our taste buds I can assure you there isn't.... How can you taste something that you ordered that doesn't even arrive... The lasagne was inedible so that didn't even hit the taste buds..... A very very disappointing experience from what could be a thriving village pub.... This isn't a reflection on the lad who I can imagine was very embarrassed at having to bring out these meals to us

We booked this pub for a party of 19 for 7.30pm. On arrival we were told there was no beer. We took our seats and asked for a menu. We were told it was only on a board in the bar. When we asked to place our order we were told to get a piece of paper and write it down very rudely by a staff member. We did this and placed our order at 7.50pm. After an hour we asked was the food ready but got a negative response. After another 30mins we requested some snacks i.e nuts and crisps as we were all hungry. Finally after almost 2hours we got our food, but not all in one go. Some of us had finished our meal before others food arrived. The chips I am sure were from a chip shop and warmed up , the Cajun chicken was dry. We were charged the full price with no apology from the management. This delay caused us to be late for a music event at the village pub which we all wanted to attend.

Other food orders were coming out of the kitchen and being served to people outside of our party group. Having seen the rundown state of The Cavendish Arms before Steve,Jen and Hayley got involved I must say that the transformation in such a short time is little more than amazing!!!.We have eaten there twice, once for a snack lunch and again for the Sunday Lunch. The quality and value for money is amazing, just like home cooking.Cannot comment on the beer but Mr S a previous contributor must be an expert and an idiot !!!!.Give the team a chance,it takes a while to get everything right. The only place we have eaten where you can have a small plate on a Sunday. The homemade sweets are a delight,Apple and Strawberry Crumble with creamy custard, what could be better.Steve the front of house man, although new to the trade has got it right, efficient, chatty and not constantly asking if everything is OK.Jen working in the kitchen has the least "glamorous" of jobs but important all the same.Keep up the good work all of you,we will be back, despite living in Derby.Nobody is anywher near your Sunday Lunch and some are charging twice what you pay at The Cavendish Arms Doveridge.t

I'm a little late in writing this review as we visited 2 weeks ago. We were staying a cottage near by and were a group of 13 girls on a hen do. The main reason we booked the Cavendish Arms in the first place was because it was the closest pub to where we were staying. I can't say enough to compliment the service. We took up a large table and probably were quite loud but the staff didn't seem fazed at all. Food was all cooked fresh and did come out separately, but they kept us updated and they had warned us of this when we booked, so we were expecting that. You can tell why they couldn't do all the dishes together, it was all cooked to order and the quality was great, especially for the price!! It's beautifully decorated and and welcoming inside and is definitely worth if you're in the area. We were staying up the road at the Clay Pigeon shooting club, and it was only a five minute taxi ride (we used Dovelin Taxi Uttoexeter).

We got melt in the mouth tender beef & pork, Mash & proper roast potatoes, carrot & swede mash, brussels, green beans, cabbage, colly, pigs in blankets, home made yorkys, gravy & a jug of extra gravy. My partner and I were house hunting. We called in at the Cavendish Arms at 2:00pm on a Sunday afternoon. We wanted a cup of coffee. There was a table of 8 having their main course and a few couples, in no way was it busy and no one was drinking at the bar. We asked for two coffees and the barman (? landlord) disappeared into the kitchen only to reappear saying that 'the kitchen were struggling' with lunches waving his hand at the already served party a. 'You can have a soft drink if you like'.I was dumfounded by this approach. They were not busy, if they had been I would have understood. What is the explanation? Were I to live locally I would have wanted to eat and drink there on a regular basis, future business lost. This was a very poor decision, on business grounds and PR grounds and indicated either ignorance or bone idleness (Could the underemployed barman have made the drinks?) What was going to happen when the party at the table wanted their after lunch coffees?I might add that various coffees were specifically mentioned on the menu.Appalling. No other word for it.I do not like negative reporting but no choice.T

Called after lovely day out in North Wales, thought a nice meal would complete the day. My husband ordered the steak pie, chips and gravy,no veg and I opted for scampi, chips and peas. We sat outside in the charming garden in the evening sunshine. idyllic! Dinner was bought out after a reasonable wait, to my husband's dismay veg on both sides of the pie. The young lady was very apologetic took it back and returned with just pie, chips and gravy as requested. However the real disappointment were the chips! Very dark( fresh oil needed) and soft in fact floppy when picked up! By this time we just wanted to eat up and go, so unfortunately didn't go in to complain.. We aren't picky, we actually had a chippy for 15 years so know a good chip, these were not good! Shame as the pub was lovely and service very friendly.

Looks like a nice country pub but has a very limited menu which was home cooked but not like you mum makes. Real ale was very good and a choice of4 ales

Waited over an hour for four meals, simple burger chips and curry. No naan, runny curry, thin mass produced frozen burgers. Landlord struggling to smile. Makes for a grim evening out. Shame really for the only pub in the village, an effort may work???

We booked. Our table wasn't ready. The bar man pushed tables about.we ended up sitting on two tables. The "carvery" was a roast beef dinner served to the table. There were 10+1child. When we ordered we asked for all the meals to be bought out together we were told this wasn't possible as it takes different times to cook. We all ate at different times. The meals were cold. The pub was cold. The staff were cold.

I was visiting friends in Doveridge and they took me to The Cavendish Arms for an evening meal on the Saturday night. We arrived at about 20:15 and ordered at 20:30. Looking at the menu, we discovered that it was completely different to the one outside that my friend had checked earlier. The guy behind the bar who took our order warned us that it may be a bit of a wait for food, however we ended up waiting an hour and a half for food that arrived separately - all 4 of us got our plates at different times. The food that I did have was ok, I had the game pie. The meat was delicious and there was a good amount of vegetables but the pastry was very dry. A nice little put but was overwhelmed when half of its tables were full. I probably wouldn't eat there again due to the wait and the food being only average. Total price for 4 of us having 1 alcoholic drink each and 4 main meals was £50.

The previous incarnation of this pub had very tired decor and seemed to be solely for the hardened drinker (despite a very genial landlord). The recent(ish) refurbishment has breathed new life into the building and it feels like a very comfortable village pub. Since the recent management took over the food has been both good quality and decently priced and they host a number of events in the pub (family and music events, themed parties, etc.) and are open to other ideas. As someone who appreciates a good ale I have had a number of excellent pints there (e.g. Old Speckled Hen, Timothy Taylor and Tribute). I can understand the comments about a cold reception but this is changing and give it a chance and you will have a lovely evening there.

My wife and myself visited the Cavendish Arms on Saturday lunch time on the basis of the glowing reviews the place has received. We arrived at about 12.15, as we entered the place was empty except for the person behind the bar, who when she saw us immediately took herself off to the far corner of the bar behind a pillar where she buried her nose into a mug of tea(?). I followed her, she stared at me, I said hello and she managed to grunt a response. I asked if we could get lunch, she replied 'We can do food'. It was obvious that she would rather not be bothered so my wife and myself immediately left and went to a much more friendly pub,Car parking is adequate and the building seems attractive and comfortable.

I've tried reporting this as incorrect address in the past, but no change.Correct postcode is DE6 5JR. 13 miles from Ashbourne. Confusion because postal address seems to use street name and town, not village name (Doveridge) or postcode. Please delete this review once you've read it.

We ate in here last week I think it was a thursday. The pub seems quite pleasant inside if a tad pretentious. We both ate main meals and were dissapointed as hardly cheap or reasonable. Same old really for a refurb joint like this which is "Pub Food at Restaraunt Prices". Save your money and go into Uttoxeter. The food in Wetherspoons is nicer and obviously much cheaper.

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.

We went for Sunday lunch and it was probably the best I've had, the meat melted in your mouth and the veg was brilliant with meaty gravy

Called here this morning before going for a walk round Matlock bath. Lovely quaint little tea shop with welcoming servers. Just had drinks but the menu stated a variety of food and cakes. Great prices also. Would call again as lots of Covid restrictions in place so felt safe.
