Depending on who's manning the counter you can have a lovely welcoming smile or a barely concealed sneer. The fish has always been excellent and I can't find a thing to complain about. I always have it wrapped separately from my chips to avoid the greasiness others have mentioned. Portion sizes are generous and price is what you'd expect. The Chinese food can be over salty and a bit flavourless when it comes to actual real taste. They do the best pancake rolls around and the prawn crackers aren't ever greasy or soggy. Do not order burgers! They're the only thing I have genuinely regretted buying. All in all, it's served us well, but isn't our favourite place. However it is the most convenient and good enough that we'll keep going back.

I had scampi & chips. Scampi was fresh and therefore hot and tasty. The chips were foul. They were either soggy and cakes in grease or weirdly solid (not crispy) and felt like they were going to break your teeth. Not worth the money, go elsewhere

Unfortunately I am unable to comment on the quality of the food and service at the cavalier fryer as even though advertised online (on multiple platforms) as being open when we arrived it was disappointingly closed. Very upsetting as I had an absolute hankering for chips.

HGV driver. Stopped of on route south for evening meal.you won't need to buy a drink, as you get a mouthful of grease with ever chip. Advise you try somewhere else

Unfortunately this is the most local to me. Trying to not be negative as the portion sizes are good and some items are good like the sausages, the pasties etc Chips are different depending when you go in the week. Chicken balls not too bad. Will agree with other comments re the red curry sauce, could do with something more curry looking at tasting. This curry actually stained a plate and cant remove the red colouring from it. If you are near heathfield I would personally drive that little bit further into Bovey Tracey and go to Choys, little bit more expensive but worth it.

After a round the block trip to get to the place due to road works ordered some chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce which came up hot and after a short drive back and still hot. Food was too much and kept half for lunch the following day. Think the chef was Chinese whilst the other side is English

If you're looking for quantity over quality it's perfect however not for us. the fish and chips were tasteless and the curry was very watery. the staff were chatty and friendly and the wait time was good. not the worst take away we've had but would only re-visit if nothing else local was open.

We stopped at Heathfield on a wet and stormy Friday night en route to Plymouth, we found the local chippy, unfortunately we were served tasteless greasy fish and chips. We regularly travel the A38 to Plymouth but will not be stopping at the Cavalier Fryer again.

Nice clean takeaway with friendly staff, the portions are large but the quality is only soso, pipping hot food, would try once more, let’s hope they can improve on the quality

The food here is ok, Chinese options are good, chips can be a little hit and miss, watch out for so-called vegetarian options as they are pretty awful - veggie spring rolls ended up in the bin. The staff are very loud and can be very blunt to the point of being rude, some people may like this, but it just isn't for me! Reasonable food, but can be hit and miss.

Traveling along the a38 we decided we wanted fish and chip as hungry. This one came up on iPhone. What a gem - £6.50 large Cod and Chips enough for two person. Batter crispy and no grease or oil on wrapping. We will return as good value and excellent service.

I've just spent over half an hour waiting for fish and chips. The shop was busy but not overly so. I seemed to wait an age. Other people who had phoned in orders were arriving at the shop and being given priority. I realise the reason most people do this is so they can collect their order more quickly. I do however feel to leave customers in the shop ( yes not just me) for over half an hour for a basic order of fish and chips is not reasonable especially when we had to endure people arriving and leaving in minutes. Let's be fair. If you can't do fish and chips in a reasonable time at a fish and chip shop that's pretty poor. Worst of all at no time during my "stay" did anyone feel the need to apologise or acknowledge my presence or length of wait.

Our family of 4 had cod & chips, reasonably priced but very greasy. Probably wouldn't go there again. This is also a Chinese takeaway as well.

Food was completely bland, tasteless and watery and was simply one of the worst ever Chinese takeaways that I’ve ever eaten at. Then went to call up to complain and get a refund only for the owners to tell us that that our choices of dishes were full of flavour and to deny everything. The only good point was that they agreed to a partial refund if we brought the food in. Then the owner/chef kicked off, got aggressive and argued that there was nothing wrong with the food. This went on for at least another 10 minutes, he claimed he has been cooking for 50 years and that and it was, “just our preference”. We asked time and time again to taste it and they refused. We also tried reasoning with them only for the chef to get more aggressive and eventually told us to, “Go back home”. So I said we will be more than glad to. Old Haka from Hakaryu needs to stop serving bland rubbish food to people and not acknowledging what he’s doing. UPDATE: WOOHOO! So glad that old haka has shut up shop and a new business has taken over 🥂🍾

It is the worst rated Chinese takeaway in town, but I have to say some food that I had was actually pretty good and authentic. Good: egg foo young and chow mein. The meat was tender and juicy. Eggs were fluffy. Noodles were thin, crinkly, and saucy. Bad: fried chicken wings and fried rice.

Dear New Fung Sing I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to share my recent dining experience at your restaurant on Monday, September 2nd. I ordered a duck curry accompanied by egg fried rice, and I can confidently say it was the best Chinese meal I have ever had. The curry sauce was exceptional—truly unlike anything I have tried before. Additionally, my partner ordered prawn chow mein. Initially, she was hesitant due to a previous negative experience at another establishment, but she was thoroughly impressed. She described it as delicious, with remarkable flavor and perfectly cooked prawns. We also enjoyed shredded crispy beef, beef in black bean sauce, and chicken balls, all of which were outstanding. I wholeheartedly recommend your restaurant to others and look forward to returning soon. Thank you for the wonderful experience! Best regards,
