Caught in Winchester

Best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten. Crispy batter, beautiful cod and incredible chips, crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. No grease at all. Amazing.

The worst chips I have ever had in 44 years of life. Almost the entire portion was refried, burnt, and should have been binned not served to a paying customer. As if that the quality of the food wasn't bad enough, the quantity for the price of a large portion was disgraceful. How a fish and chip shop can get chips so horribly wrong is quite frankly unbelievable.

I came upon Catch while looking for something warm to eat while wandering around Winchester and had the medium cod and chips. I do have a healthy appetite and found this was plenty for me. The fish was lovely, very well cooked and the chips were good too.There was a bit of a wait but as the fish was being cooked to order this is a positive.

We had a nice meal here. Freshly cooked and not too greasy. Nice chips too. There is a seating area which was nice. I would eat there again.

Took a recommendation to try out for my eat-in Friday night Fish n Chips and was not disappointed. Beautiful crisp batter on some delicious cod and crispy on the outside - soft on the inside, chips. Mmmm.

As long as these guys keep putting quality first, they will remain the best fish and chip shop around. Food is always fresh, hot and crispy - generous portions too.Really hoping they keep up the focus on quality! Most places go down hill when people get lazy but these guys have been going a good few years now and the food is great. Fingers crossed!

I like to think that I’m a bit of an expert when it comes to fish and chips. I have sampled fish and chips all over the UK. This restaurant is hands down the best in terms of service, quality and value. They’re passionate about their fish and chips. The fish is always made to order with generous and really fresh portions and the most delicious batter. In fact, the couple next to us, drove for over 70 miles that evening just for the restaurant. This little place is a real hidden treasure in the centre of Winchester. You wn’t be disappointed.

This is the best place for fish and chips. Limited dining area as only a couple of tables but I always get takeaway and sit in the park to eat so this does not bother me. Fish is always fresh and nice crunchy chips. Batter on the fish is always perfect and not soggy like you get in most chippy's.Service is great and always quick..

We popped in for lunch, is a lovely little chippy, everything is made fresh and you can certainly taste the difference. Menu is good and priced fairly, offering lunchtime specials and oap choices. Well worth and visit!

Catch Fish and Chips in heart of Winchester served up excellent fish and chips. Definitely worth the wait of having everything cooked to order, fresh and piping hot, good portion sizes, the chips were chunky with a lovely crisp edge but even better the fish was delicious as the batter was thin and not killing the taste of the fish. Personally I hate it where other chippies coat the fish in ten tonne of batter or it’s been sitting in a heat plate and cooked to death. Friendly good service at the Catch also helps so will definitely be back at the Catch

I got talking with the new owners and I have to say, they "really care" about the quality that they are delivering. The oils are changed daily, often twice, which ensure crispy batter and beautifully white moist fish inside.

Had the lunchtime special here on Sunday £5.99 for fish chips and cup of tea. very nice but tartar sauce should be free if eating in, not 30p per sachet!

The food here is nice, pretty standard for a fish and chips place, however the wait is ridiculous and not worth it at all.

This little shop is just brilliant! We had haddock which was cooked beautifully, the chips were chunky and delicious and you could taste the oil had not been reused too often. Lovely friendly staff and the shop seemed clean.

Vi la oferta de pescado y patatas fritas al mediodía con una taza de té, café o un refresco por 5. 55 y debidamente aparecimos y ordenamos. Encontramos el personal muy amable. Nos sentamos en una mesa afuera y nuestro pedido estaba con nosotros en 15 minutos. Hay sal y pimienta en los molinos y un buen vinagre de malta en cada mesa. El pescado era muy bueno, suculento y sabroso dentro de una pasta decente y las patatas fritas eran igualmente buenas. El té también fue bienvenido. En mi opinión, es muy buena relación calidad-precio: el pescado también era de buen tamaño. Recomendado.

We were tourists from the U.S. - sightseeing. We visited Winchester, because someone in our group had been there before, and loved it.

CAUGHT is under new management. It always was clean, attractive with beautifully cooked fish and chips. My recent fish meal was moist, tasty and with even better coffee ! Consistently good. Service was friendly and quick. Look forward to returning soon. Thanks for a lovely meal.

Probably the best pickled egg I've tasted with the perfect balance of vinegar and soaking time providing a subtle tang to this underrated of foods. On inspection there was no dark edges to the yolk which indicates over pickling. Fish'n chips excellent too with golden chips with a perfect crunch not the sloppy pale mess you sometimes get where you can't differentiate the fish from the chips. These fishy artisans are serious about their work- and a huge gang of German tourists agreed by their empty plates and satisfied faces.

We visited here on a Sunday lunchtime looking for a quick snack. The small restaurant area was busy with all the tables taken, and there were also several customers waiting for their takeaway order. We joined the queue and our order was taken fairly quickly. However, we had a 20 minute wait after placing our order before receiving our chips. I got the impression that they were understaffed, or perhaps not able to cope with busy lunchtimes. The amount of customers however is a testament to the quality of the food. Despite our long wait the chips were delicious and we thoroughly enjoyed them. We didn't try anything else off the menu so cannot comment on the quality of any of their other products but we would return again (when we are not in a rush!).

We visited this fish and chip shop on an extremely busy evening. An hour before the Winchester Fireworks parade. However we were at the head of the queue and all the food was prepared from fresh. Some of the most enjoyable cod and chips I have ever had the pleasure of eating.

We were passing by looking for a place to sit down and eat and decided to give this place a try. I had the medium cod, chips and drink lunchtime special. Not big, but good on quality and not out of our way.

We are pretty chilled out people and we don't leave a bad review easily but we left this place really frustrated, disappointed and wanting to tell people how we felt.

Very disappointing visit. First off the staff were extremely rude and dismissive. Then they took forever to complete my very simple order, mainly due to the amount of talking between staff. The food was below average, small portions and cold. They will not be receiving my custom again.

Eat from here once a month as a take away the food is always cooked to order - it really is one of the best in Winchester - would thoroughly recommend !

We had the fish, chips and three different pies (steak, steak and kidney, and chicken) and everything was great! Cute little place for a nice, quick lunch. The people who work here are very nice as well.

Last week I was lucky to be taken to Rick Stein's and had what I can only describe as an average meal. By comparison my impromptu visit to Catch was superb and a fraction of the price. Fish cooked to order, clean premises and excellent service. Highly recommended.

It's now my favourite Fish and Chips in town. Very kind staff, you can eat in if you like, and the meal can include the warm drink to which they kindly also add a biscuit. That I find a 'sweet' thought. Food is served on proper plates with real cutlery. The place is spotless and the atmosphere is nice and familiar. If you're eating in they come and check if all is fine. I just can but suggest this place if you fancy good fish and chips. Personally I love it and friends I took here liked it, too. They also have a loyalty card. And they are very kind also with children. Love it.

Ordered a child's portion of fish bites and chips and regular cod and chips. Both were absolutely delicious. Good size portion, definitely quality over quantity.Cannot recommend this place enough.

I took my burger back - because - well they won't tell you because all they did was say "Thankyou!" when I put it back.Run by kids this afternoon, and having worked in hospitality, I can't blame them for that. Then should be taught how to deal with a complaint though.And as somebody who tries to use it as a local place to provide lunch for multiples - I can tell you the customer service with that is rubbish too.There is a Mcdonalds over the road.This place over charges for minimum effort.And I am quite familiar with the staff smoking outside and returning without washing their hands.AVOIDThe clue is in the name

I spent £25 last night on family fish and chips. Paid, sorted. But had forgotten something. Tried to pay for it again on my card and was refused as they had a £5 card limit. I totally understand this BUT I had just spent £25 so surely they could waive this rule just for me to spend a bit more ? No. Staff were adamant. Whole thing lacked discretion, it was silly. Won't be going back in case my memory fails me again on something under a fiver. Nice fish and chips though, to be fair.

I cannot recommend this place highly enough, The fish is freshly cooked to order and is so moist , sweet and tasty it's unlike any I've had for years . I am having fish for the second time this week , naughty but soooo nice :)

3/12/2016 I ordered Fish n Chip and did say the price 7.99 pounds.I realised that I supposed to have mashy pea in this set.I guessed I talked with the owner and he blamed me that I ordered the set of 6.65 pounds.He spoke loundly that I did order the wrong one and he said ok I gave you mashy pea for free (what???). I explanined that I gave him 12 pounds and he gave me 0.50 pounds so the total is 11.50pounds(my son food is 3.50 pounds so say 7.99+3.50=11.49pounds and charged me 11.50pounds).He said it was 6.65+3.50=10.15pound (are you sure??). For a while he gave me the bill later and I saw the time printed was wrong. It sounded like he just had printed. He said it was the time changed. My husband checked his visa reciept and it was the right time though.He didnt listen to me at all. So my husband thought we should leave. He shouted to us that ok ok I was wrong you are right. (Was this the way you confessed??)We wont go there anymore for sure.. The food is nice but you need to make sure about the communication.

You know how it is. Sometimes you have to have fish and chips. This is the best in Winchester, reasonably priced and cooked to order. Worth the short wait.

My large family of relatives visited Winchesters in June. On a rainy day, first 4 of us, then another 4 descended on this small place, and another person ordered 4 orders of fish & chips to go. Although the fish took some time to be fried, when they came out, they were crunchy on the outside, dense and hot on the inside. They stayed hot for a long time too. I could see behind the counter that the temperature of each fish was checked after frying. The fries were also delicious. Many of my family ordered the Special with small size fish, tea/coffee/soda, and fries for £5.50. I had a medium fish with no fries for about the same price. All were delicious. Compared to the 2 other fish and chips meals I had subsequently in London, this was by far the best and most memorable.

recently stayed the weekend in Winchester for motoxgp we thought we would grab a takeaway and this came up on my satnav! well they cook everything to order so its a long process! then after waiting 20 mins for sausage n chips and roe n chips they gave us a roll instead of a roe then didn't apologise for the error but told me I should of asked for cod roe so I was wrong! very rude about it too! customers are always right - not good customer service, their communication skills are as slow as their service! All said if u don't mind waiting for ever the food was ok.

Ordered large chips, soon realised the portions were stingy so ordered another. Equivalent to small elsewhere, try Stanmore, St Cross or Harestock for proper portions.

My wife and I had the £5.50 special lunch offer of a large piece of fish, chips, a slice of bread and a canned drink: the food was well cooked and quickly brought to us and was really tasty and filling. We could not fault this place in any way for the price being paid, really excellent value for money and tasty wholesome classic fish and chips. Well worth a visit as you can sit inside or, if warm enough, outside to eat and have the food brought to you. It is right in the centre of Winchester so really convenient if you are there on a visit.

This is one of the most disgusting places I have ever been to. After hearing the employees argue with each other and being abrupt with customers, we finally recieved our orders and took our food away. I had hair after hair in my chips and would NEVER recommend this Fish & Chip shop to anyone.

La signora che ci ha serviti ci ha derisi per il nostro livello di inglese quando invece si trattava semplicemente di calcolare il resto. Una discussione per ottenere 50 pence dovuti e mai ottenuti....

The "Caught" owners have sold this shop and it's been renamed "Catch". Although the new owner is very amiable and (appears) willing to please, I think his staff need to go on a fish cooking course. Our food tonight was not up to Caught standards, the small cod was very small, the battered sausages way way too large. I don't want this venture to fail, but they need to up their game at Catch to stay in Winchester.

Sad to say that tonight will be our last takeaway from Caught. Having been loyal customers and enjoyed the friendly service and delicious fish and chips.This evening (20/06) we ordered, waited and bought our meals home to discover they were incorrect and below the usual good standard and size. We took the order back to the shop and were given new meals ( and a single can of coke for our troubles?) they were tiny portions of re fried chips and very poor cod.Not the regular staff on duty but no excuse. Never again-a real shame.

I would recommend for a quick no frills dining in Winchester, stop by Caught. The fish is fresh, fast service, reasonably priced and large portions. We also ordered the Calamari, which was cooked perfectly.

Caught appears to be the last Chippy in Winchester as the Blue Dophin disappeared and the one in Stockbridge and in Jewry St shut their doors. I found "Caught " a little bit pricey for my liking although they do deals for OAPs(not old enough yet ) . I agree with the reviewer who said that the service was slow. On the plus side the chips were freshly cooked , good clean fresh oil and cooked to perfection. Generally it is great to see a Chippy in such a stuck up place like Winchester though could do with the prices being a bit lower.

we discovered this fish shop in the winchester guide. we had some haddock and chips to take away. fish was nice and fresh, not too oily, chips homemade. the price is good, food was very nice. the staff was good with us and he didnt charge us for the drinks as we had to wait a bit more than we expected.

I have had fish n chips from caught on three separate occasions now and I think they set the standard as far as chippies go. The fish is cooked to order, fresh, tasty & crisp and the chips are never soggy or greasy. Yes there can be a bit of a wait, but hey if you want cooked to order fish than there will be. Service is always friendly and they recognize you too, nice touch.

A previous chippy on the same premises is much missed, as the owner and staff were top quality. The same good food remains, though as everything is cooked fresh and the sole staff member (on a Saturday early evening) made each order in turn it meant a staggering 20 minute wait for a large portion of chips. Not that large, to be honest, but tasty. Not a place to visit on a whim, but phone ahead and go collect. You won't be disappointed like I sadly was. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt though as surely has potential, just needs fine tuning.

I often find f&c never quite live up to expectations. Not at Caught. My craving was utterly satisfied with the best fish and chips I've ever had. The chips were perfectly cooked, fabulous day chips with a slight crispy finish, and the fish was lovely and moist with a good batter/fish ratio. Perfect!!

We got take away from here last Friday and were happy with what we received. A decent fish and chip shop and the guy was friendly too. Only thing missing was a lemon wedge!

After a visiting Wnchester's street market stalls for a good browse my husband and I were rather hungry and popped into Caught for chips and curry sauce. It was the first time we had visited and we were treated like regulars who had ordered full meals. Food freshly cooked and we able to eat in the restaurant . Outside seating also available. Lovely chips and very tasty curry sauce, Staff were friendly, polite and very helpful. Will definitely visit again for. Good vegetarian options available.

We had the best cod ever in Caught a couple of weeks ago. The chips were fantastic and a pot of peas, heavenly.Oh and the staff well polite and cheerful and chatty.Brilliant.

Stopped here to get a quick meal before I crashed in my hotel. Superb chips, fritters and service. Will be going here the next time I'm in Winchester.

Came by yesterday lunchtime and enjoyed a great portion of f&c, large portions and HOT and CRISPY. Had to mention It being hot and crispy as so so many chippies fall short at this point but not at 'Caught'.Very friendly staff and service and PROPER cutlery, not 'yer piddly plastic' that snaps on the first chip or bit of batter it encounters, and if ever a portion of f&c was to test plastic cutlery, this would be it. Eatery of choice in Winchester? Caught everytime!

When it comes to Fish and Chips at "CAUGHT" in Winchester UK, it is the Best Ever. None can compare to the preparation and the fine taste of their Fish and Chips. Added to the fine taste, one gets another perk which is the friendly atmosphere of the people. The way the F&C is served adds to the experience. The people have a special good attitude and sincerity which creates a true comfort level. We went to Winchester with another American couple since there was a ship's cruise tour to Winchester Cathedral. It was easy to walk to from the Cathedral and opens at 12 noon. I recommend this wonderful treat to anyone who wants to enjoy a delightful lunch of Fish and Chips. Please note that they have a daily Senior Citizen special as On a scale of 10 (being the best), CAUGHT qualifies for an "11" !They are located at 66 St Georges Street.

We visited Winchester on a cruise tour, and my wife and i and our friends wanted fish and chips.We saw the review here, and made a bee line for Caught. We were not disappointed.The fish and chips were wonderful, and the staff was most delightful. Two thumbs up from the four Floridians. This place was fantastic!!

....... and that is what Caught is. Fresh fish in a crisp and golden batter, twice fried fluffy centred chips done to perfection. I have fish and chips, mainly in sometimes expensive restaurants about once a month. Never have I had them anywhere near the perfection of Caught's. All topped with excellent and cheerful service. 11 out of 10

Went on reccomendation of a friend and although the food was lovely the server was rude and dismissive. Won't be going back after being ignored and rudely spoken to.

Having read the reviews we thought, great, let's try. Unfortunately it didn't work out so good. We visited last night (Fri 2/5) at 6:30pm. Firstly we picked a bad time to arrive as the shop was very busy and had a 25 minutes wait.But worse than that all 3 of us (me, my wife and my daughter) have gone down ill after eating the fish and chips. I have had a dodgy tummy since late yesterday evening, my wife has had a high temperature and my daughter has been suffering from both. The only common thing we did/ate yesterday was the fish and chips.So no recommendation from us!

Best fish and chips in Winchester by a mile. Freshly cooked to order on each visit. We go there once or twice a month and it has always been consistently great.

Good fish and chips,beautifully cooked not at all greasy. Service was a little slow but this was understandable as they were training a member of staff. They were exceptionally friendly so excellent customer service overall and I have to say they look very smart in their uniforms which was refreshing to see in a chippy, and it all looked very clean and very well looked after. It wasn't very expensive either, we had fish and chips, and sausage and chips for less than a tenner. I'll be going back again for more!

Very friendly people run this shop. Genuinely have the time of day for you always. No stale fish here, every bit cooked fresh. Superb curry sauce and mushy peas give caught the edge on everything else around. A truly famous fish n chip shop.

Took the family here for lunch based on other reviews and have to agree that this is a really good fish and chip outlet. If you are used to the more normal quality typified by the likes of Seafarers thus is a real eye opener. The haddock was nice and meaty and very tasty and a good size. The chips were plentiful and also of high quality (real potato as my son commented). Homemade sauce tatare available. The only slightly downside was the batter was very tasty and crisp but a little greasy. Maybe even better if cooked in beef dripping. Note that this is a a take away with a few seats rather than a restaurant.

If you're looking for top quality Fish n Chips this is the place to go. I have lunch there once a week. Their fish is fresh and the batter they use on their fish is really light and tasty. To cap it all, the staff are very friendly.

New ownership and now EXCELLENT. Parking is a challenge, but my partner double parked while I nipped in. We had called ahead as all the stuff we wanted would need cooking fresh. We had plaice, calamari and scampi, with a pea fritter and 3 portions of chips. HUGE bit of place, and very nice calamari. Scampi looked more "industrial" as in bought in frozen, but the batter on the other items was crispy and light. The chips were fresh and crispy, and better than Seafare on Worthy Lane (theirs are soggy)Of particular note was the items were packed in flat solid cardboard boxes which protected them well from being squashed. Price for the whole lot was £16.50, so very reasonable for three people.Service was friendly and very happy to take a phone order - since parking is a hassle this means a lot. Because I always have plaice, it needs cooking fresh, and at Seafare that means queuing up, placing the order then having to wait, and they are very reluctant to take phone orders. They also seem to run out of chicken pies every time I go.So Caught is the new venue for me, although my new year plan to shift weight might mean that it is a while before I go back!

Stumbled on caught after recently picking up another takeaway very close. The last time I had fish and chips this good it was in Padstow at rickie steins. Just excellent, proper mushy peas and a great curry sauce instead of the usual bland stuffPerfect chips and great cod. We loved it and most importantly so did the kids. Awesome

This fish shop,under new management,is a gem. The staff are incredibly friendly,the shop is spotless,the prices are good and the food is delicious. Try their homemade tartar sauce or deep fried calamari, their specials are wonderful and they operate a loyalty scheme. I cannot recommend this fish shop enough. Take away or eat in. Not to be missed. It's located near the shops and also offices so ideal to pop in for lunch.

A proper chip shop at last! Delicious fresh chips, nice clean shop and pleasant owners. Central location in town with area to sit down inside to keep warm. Prices very reasonable and a good selection including veggie burgers too. My new local :-)

I very much agree with the review above.Proper, fresh, nostalgic Fish & Chips.I've visited 4 x already since it opened. Specials include Salmon Bites with a homemade Dill mayonaise. I'd also recommend their Tartare Sauce.Superb service with a real passion for food.

At last there is a fish and chip shop in winchester worth going to. Friendly and meticulously clean it inspired confidence from the first step through the door. The fresh from the fryer cod and chips are awesome, and the battered mackerel is to die for. 10/10
