Telephoned to book and said that we may be bringing a dog. We were told that dogs were not allowed in the dining room which was fair enough, however we could eat in the bar. As there were 5 of us we decided not to take the dog and I rang and told them so and asked to book the dining area. When we arrived I went to the dining area to be greeted by a rather large dog, (which turned out to be the owners,) which was slobbering everywhere as it walked around the room. I then found out that we had been put in the bar. We then had to walk through the dining room to where the food was being served and then back into the bar which was becoming busy. We were sat around a table in the middle of the bar with people constantly back and forth. It was a nightmare. Needless to say we won’t be returning

After a walk around Hemyock, we (extended family group of 10), popped in for a meal. As it was lunch, it was relatively quiet so we got seated in the restaurant area. Once the waitress came over, we ordered our meals. Took a while to get the food and water, hence one point was lost, however, food was amazing (sandwiches, chips, wraps and fish), the staff were friendly and professional, restaurant was clean. Would definitely recommend if in the vicinity. I'll be unable to go as this is a holiday visit. Bonus - The patrons are so friendly, and welcoming. Loved it.

Wonderful carvery, went for my husbands birthday, with my father in law who lives in hemyock, excellent value and food, pub was very busy but well organised. Carvery meats were beef and gammon with such a selection of veg, beef just melted in your mouth and Yorkshire puds were huge would highly recommend, Think you would need to book a table though as very popular and I can see why

Ok, so let's address the common whine from outsiders and grockles: "Mr Grumpy" is Basil Fawlty and one of the many local eccentric characters. He doesn't mean most of the rude/grumpy things he says. Customer Service wasn't invented when he took over the pub, and he was socialised with dairy cows rather than humans. A few people have negatively mentioned Sergio the Cane Corso pub dog. That is based on his appearance; he's a big dog and was adopted from Serbia so sadly has cropped ears and tail. However, he's the softest old boy I've ever known and never hurt anybody. He didn't like blokes in hi viz jackets for some reason, and will grump at them a bit but it's never nasty. He loves kids and they love him. He also loves playing with other dogs and is always on the receiving end of aggression from precious grockles with smaller, badly-socialised dogs but he never fights back. Anyway, since Tom the chef took over, the restaurant has gone from strength to strength. His culinary skills are legendary in the local area, and the prices are definitely reasonable for the enormous servings of deliciousness you get. The bar side is full of very friendly locals who do their best to keep Mr Grumpy's worst excesses in check when outsiders come in.

Our 4th visit to this delightful village pub and it just keeps on getting better. It’s now our go to place when we have special occasions or special visitors. The Sunday carvery is 1st class and the only place I choose the beef, slow cooked overnight, the chef certainly knows his stuff. On this occasion it was a birthday meal, the best cod in batter Iv had in many a year and the duo of fish cakes went down well across the table. I probably shouldn’t have had a desert, but decided to go for it. Treacle tart, hot custard and clotted cream, Almond and Strawberry pavlova was in order for my guest. A great meal with great service, what more could we ask for ?

After an 8 mile walk we chanced upon this pub & had a lovely meal - we didn’t book and realised it was valentines! Had to wait quite a while to get served and nearly decided to leave as the place was empty. The landlord/manager is quirky if you like dry humour you’ll be fine could understand that some might find him off putting but stick with it as the food is really good. It’s not fine dining but you’re in a pub and as pub food goes it was really good. All freshly made down to the tartar sauce, onion rings and even the chips. No frozen ones here! That was great to find been ages since we’ve had proper chips! Especially if eating out. Huge portions didn’t leave feeling hungry. Great value three courses two drinks £48! Nice log burner to sit by in lounge shame restaurant was chilly though . Service was attentive if a little slow. All in all no real complaints just niggles.

We had an early dinner at The Catherine Wheel when we found ourselves passing through Hemyock. Lovely old county inn in a beautiful village with a good choice on the black board menu. The bar staff and waiter were friendly and we were told the staff were just finishing setting up the restaurant (it was about 6.15) so to have a drink and the waiter would take our order. He did this when prompted, after a couple of other people who came in after us had had their order taken. The ordering process felt a bit over-complicated for a country pub! The restaurant was a bit chilly but pleasant. The food was okay but over-priced for the quality - my rice was over-cooked and my partner’s mashed potatoe was over-flavoured and neither dishes were piping hot. Didn’t try the desserts but they looked delicious. Appreciated the courteousness of the bar and waiting staff.

We travel to Hemyock at least once a year, hunting down my husbands anscestors from the Dark Ages (!) and stay in a local B&B and always pop down to The Catherine Wheel for some lovely pub grub.We usually eat in the bar area but have eaten in the restaurant too. Either way I cannot fault the food or the service. The waiting staff are always friendly towards us "outsiders" and we've never once had any reason at all to complain about the food which is always tasty and morish.I know some people would baulk at the idea of a huge dog strolling through the bar but he's such a soppy old thing you can't help but give him a pat/tummy rub! Popped in with my family en spec, at 7.30pm on a Saturday evening whilst on a weekend break in the area. Lady behind the bar and the waitress were very accommodating and whilst busy, did look to slot the 5 of us in (me, wife and three kids). Had a beer or two whilst we waited in the lounge area of the pub (a pub which still has both a 'lounge' and a 'bar' area.....long may these places continue!).Called into the restaurant when our table was ready. Nice enough dining area, but not the oldie worlde charm of the rest of the pub. Service nice and prompt. One young lady waiting on all tables in the restaurant so she had her work cut out, but she did so with a smile and a chirpy attitude, so good on her!Food was good, went straight for main. Rib Eye steak was superbly cooked. Tender and flavoursome. Nice chunky chips. Wifey had some sort of veggie thing so I didn't take much note.....but she said it was good. Kids menu was a little limited (usual fodder of pizza/sausage/chicken nuggets & chips). Would be nice if places could do something a little more interesting for the younger ones. I had a sideways glance at the table next door which was served a burger. Looked pretty darn impressive, so that'll be on the list for next time.

Perhaps I was expecting or hoping for too much but I certainly wouldn't call this a gastro pub. The food, although presented very well, was mostly not very good. The burger was dry, overcooked, and flavorless. My chicken liver pate starter was bland. The chips though were extremely good! And the waitress was lovely. We eat on a Friday night and only two of the tables in the fairly large restaurant were being used which suggests this is not a popular place to eat.The ambience was of a pub struggling to survive and in need of a facelift. If you are looking for somewhere very close to Hamyock to eat then this is pub is ok I guess. But definitely not worth traveling for.

Stopped for a meal ahead of going to see a band playing in the village. What a wonderful pub. Very warm welcome and fabulous food. The service was fabulous too. Will definitely go back again!

Having spent an invigorating walk on Culmstock Beacon the cosy chairs by the fire at The Catherine Wheel were very welcome. As was the superb lunch with friendly and excellent service. I had the beetroot soup with sheep curd, served with warm crusty bread and butter and my daughter had the excellent homemade burger, cooked to her specification. We followed this with a shared rhubarb crumble, custard and icecream which again was excellent and all were beautifully presented. What made the experience even more enjoyable was the service we received from the charming waitress.Historically they have been known to let themselves down due to slow service, but this was not the case with us but then there didn't appear to be anyone else eating at the time. It is such a shame they appear still not to have 'cracked' the slow service problem as our experience was faultless and wish this would be the case for everyone.

Booked a table for 5 but when we arrived it seemed that everyone was booked at virtually the same time. Well, at least everyone seemed to be waiting to eat for a very long time as we were. The food was incredibly slow at coming out. Luckily we had a lot of catching up to do and chatting. The menu was extensive and looked quite exciting- if a tad expensive for a village pub. The food wasn't terribly good quality and why O why was there a dog in the restaurant and lay on the corridor outside the kitchen., That should never be allowed!!

The food was really great and my partner has a rib eye steak the best he has ever had! My sea bass was lovely and our friends curry was brill. The service was a little slow but its good to take it easy sometimes. The staff were all lovely at the bar and in the restaurant, it was proper local pub with lots if interesting old photographs of the pub and village of Hemlock. A good selection of beers too... I would recommend this pub.

Decided to give this pub a try for Sunday lunch. They dont offer a carvery but plenty of choice on the menu including belly pork which we ordered.Served on a bed of red cabbage the slices were succlent with crispy crackling and accompanying veg which were fresh, and cooked to perfection. We enjoyed our prelunch drinks sitting on comfortable sofas next to a much needed fire in the wood burner.Unlike other reviewers, we had very good service. Perhaps once it gets busy this might be slow as there appeared to be only one person serving. Will definitely return to this pub.

This was a trip back to family roots as the Wide family have been Hemyock based since the 1600s at least. Last time I was here (1958) many Wides still lived in the area; now it seems they come back to be buried. But what was surprising was to find a real pub of local character, wood fire, and quite sophisticated menu properly delivered at a sensible price. Decent beer on a proper tap (I expect, sadly, some Eurofizz was also available for those unable to drink a proper pint) and of course cider. Out the front door is a charming church with babbling brook and visible Norman roots. All adds to the experience.

Went recently for a Christmas/Birthday celebration. We've eaten here before too so I guess the review covers both visits. Food - excellent. All home made, delicious and good value. Service - slow. Now we don't mind having gaps between our food, but when the pub is quiet, you don't really expect things to take as long as they do. I think with a little more sense of urgency and awareness this could be an absolute gem of a pub, as the chef is clearly very talented.

Arrived before noon for an impromptu lunch not sure if they would be serving food, received a warm welcome and a chap even helped us up to the garden play area with our two large buggies, ordered Jacket Potatoes which were delicious with plenty of filling, salad, and homemade coleslaw. Children's area in the garden was lovely, clean, tidy, with plenty to keep little ones entertained.

A lovely pub where we met with family who came up from Dartmoor to visit us on holiday. Stunning views across the river, a beautiful garden, great staff and dogs welcome. The food was passable, the pork belly tasted like it had been microwaved unfortunately, but the veggie lasagne was good but could've done with a bit more seasoning. I would love to return when it's warmer to sit out in the garden but I imagine it probably gets very busy being so picturesque.
