freshly cooked fish and chips with other options family run business open 3 nights a week and is situated on the route for the NC500

Arrived and there was a few people waiting outside, so thought it was a good sign as it appeared popular with the locals. I think most were waiting outside as the shop was full of smoke as the extraction doesn't appear to be working. Unfortunately we waited 55 minutes for 2 fish suppers and a bag of chips, others were waiting for similar times. The food came and the portion sizes were good, the medium box of chips were huge. The chips however were a bit on the hard side, one of the fish suppers had two fish and the other only one fish for some reason and all were a bit too greasy. Overall the food was average, and at 55 minutes, not worth the wait unfortunately.

Went to the Castletown Chip Shop as it was near where we were staying. There were quite a few people waiting, so we thought it might be good. They ran out of fries, so the fish sat on the shelf until the fries were cooked. The fries were not crispy and should have been cooked longer. They put the vinegar and salt on the fish. So, by the time we were ready to eat them, they were soggy and greasy. It was about an hour until closing time, and it seemed like they should have changed the oil, but didn't bother because of the time. We went to Thurso for the rest of our meals.

We decided to have sausages & chips for our tea whilst doing the NC500, the selection of food was amazing & the staff were happy to explain to us what was on offer. We both chose sausages & chips. The staff were happy listening to where we are travelling to next. The food was very tasty & plentiful.

Great pie, chips and peas, and, as of 1 September, open 4-7.30 Thursday till Saturday. Much better than the chippy we tried in Thurso 2 nights ago!

We were staying nearby and this chippy was recommended. Very very disappointed with the choice offered, nothing veggie except chips, cheese & coleslaw or any variation. I just had chips, my husband had fish, chips and mushy peas. The chips were pale and not very appealing, they had virtually no taste, if it wasn't for the salt & vinegar they would have been even worse. The fish batter was a strange dayglo orange colour and very greasy, and the mushy peas were more mush than pea, liquid and tasteless. Would definitely not return or recommend.

Been to the chip shop in Castletown a few times. The quality seems to vary. Some days you will get delicious fish and chips and on other days not so good. Problem is, standards are so varied that I'm not prepared to drive out and take the chance, would rather go to a local chippy in Thurso where quality is more guaranteed.

The shop was conveniently located for our B&B. We didn't enjoy the chips as they were dry. The batter on the sausages was not crispy and very stodgy.

Staying near by and decided we wanted fish and chips on our last night. Were not disappointed! Huge Haddock freshly cooked in front of us with a mountain of freshly cut chips and mushy peas. Excellent food (was clearly busy with locals which is always a good sign) and the staff were super friendly and polite. Would highly recommend and will defo be back next time we are in the area!

We arrived in Castletown early Sunday evening hoping for a nice fish supper after hearing good recommendations about Castletown chippie. . Unfortunately it was closed so we had to have a cold pie from a shop next to our accommodation. As there were others looking for something to eat I was surprised and disappointed it was shut during the peak tourist season.

We ordered 2 large portions of chips and we got one portion that was smaller than a small. We ordered 2 battered sausages and got 2 tiny, soggy, extremely greasy things called red pudding, which was spicy and not very nice and it was expensive. The people in the shop seemed to care more about the locals and were not that friendly. The chips had Tom much vinegar and not enough salt and were soggy and all stuck together.

We read the instructions posted, telephoned our order in and picked up our supper very quickly and it was yummy. Last night in the caravan and it was really good, thank you.

Family had scampi and several rounds of haddock and a selection of sides. Very nice and very fresh tasting. Social distancing measures worked well. All in all worth the visit

Fish and chips, the chips were not the best, the fish although was cooked well and tasted ok the batter was under cooked on the inside.,,,,Very average

This was the best tasting fish that we had during our holiday in Scotland. it was freshly battered and cooked to perfection. Staff were friendly and engaging as well.

Called in on our way past as we'd had an awful fish supper last night elsewhere and were in need of some decent chips, castletown didn't disappoint yet again!! Fresh,hot chips. We will definitely be back again before the end of our holiday for a decent fish supper!!!

Stopped off for supper here on way to JO'G. Probably the best fish I've ever eaten from a chippy. The chips were interesting too. Not sure what they were cooked in but the texture was different to other chippies I've bought from. Well worth a visit and the staff were really friendly too.

Visited here after a long drive to Dunnet. Really good fish and the chips were good. My daughter had a cheeseburger and it was excellent, proper butchers quality burger on a proper soft burger roll. Enjoyed it so much that we went back twice before we headed home. Nice shop inside and the staff were in proper uniforms and really friendly.

Super lækkert, lokalt fish and Chips. Travl lille shop hvor der kom mange lokale. Vi holdt picnic på græsset ved skøn udsigt, men man manglede lidt en bænk man kunne sidde på.

We arrived early evening just as it was closing so was a bitbof luck.This howeverv was no problem for the staff to russle up a couple of healthy portions of cod and chips which were cooked to perfection. You guys made 2 weary and hungry travellers very grateful and hugely impressed.

This place is a small hole in the wall location, however, the fish and chips are some of the best that I have ever eaten. The fish id fresh, the price is reasonable, and the friendliness of the staff is unsurpassed. If you are in this area, you definitely have to give this a try for an authentic fish and chips meal!

Not been to here for a few months, not sure what has happened to it. As I was walking out to the car with our 2 fish suppers the boxes were dripping onto the pavement.When we open the box the chips were anemic, never seen chips so white & rubbery. After a short time the bottom of the box was soggy. The fish was OK but the batter soft.Not sure if we will return. Very sad as it used to be so good.

Disappointing fish and chips. The batter started off being crispy but soon became soggy as the residue fat soaked in, and there was a lot of fat! The Haddock itself was very tasty. Chips ok, soft but pasty looking, not terribly appealing. We probably wouldn't return

My wife and I recently hired a 2-berth Globestar 600L motorhome from the wonderful Highland Campervans in Dalcross (near Inverness) and did the magnificent North Coast 500 in an anti-clockwise direction. It was a fantastic trip. One of the best road trips ever. Weather was brilliant. People were so friendly. Midges were few. Scenery was beyond expectation. Especially the West Coast.

After a shopping trip came through castletown to grab some dinner. Was a lovely night so took it home to eat in the garden with kids. Smoked sausages were ok but the chips were awful. Really soggy. Even my 6 year old son didn't like his chips. Wasnt Impressed at all especially when the display of foods looked amazing the chips let it down. Will stick to robins

From the views in the visitors book where I was staying they highly recommended this take a way but I must have been unlucky - the batter was very soggy and the chips were very hard

Lovely Scrabster fish, pies, sausages, puddings, etc from the local butcher (that is jointly owned). All cooked well. As a added bonus, take your food a short distance down to Dunnet Bay and eat it while looking at fabulous views

Went here for our tea when staying with friends in Castletown. The batter is excellent and decent sized portions fro your money too. Well worth a visit.

Service is quick and the servers r all very friendly and every single item on the menu is great except for the chips

Seems a popular chip shop, but what we had tasted ok but the fish was very soggy and oily. The chips were a bit soft.

A lovely little chip shop with very nice staff. Good fish and chips though the batter could be crispier for my taste. Still that's just me. Stop in.

We often travel the few miles from thurso to Castletown to visit this chippy.excellent service,and the y have a lot to offer, freshly cooked and delicious.well worth a visit.highly recomended

Always use this fish and chop shop when in Castleton, look forward to my haggis supper, feel its a bit pricey for amount of chips you get but still enjoyable

Four of us enjoyed take-away fish and chips from here whilst parked up on the car park just down the road and overlooking the beach.Good sized portions and well priced.

Had red pudding with two fish suppers as its locally known the batter on the fish was lovely and crisp but the chips ( a very large portion) were anaemic and not the golden brown as chips should be but there is a lot more eaties offered in this place than just the fish and chips

Lived in Castletown in the late 80's and was visiting the north of Scotland for a week's break. Got white pudding and chips and went and sat on a sunny evening down at the Castletown harbour.Obviously has changed hands in the last 25 years but this remains some of the finest take away chips I have ever tasted.

I called in the early evening and requested piping hot chips and curry sauce. I was attended by a very pleasant young lady who indeed provided me with the required newly cooked chips and a delicious curry sauce.I sat at the harbour and thoroughly enjoyed them. Well done!

Last week I called and was served a portion of chips which were cold on reaching home (five minutes away) I spoke to Barbara who apologised and invited me to return for a freshly cooked portion of chips at her expense. I called today where I was greeted by Barbara who again apologised profusely. I was served with fresh chips and a huge portion of fish. I consumed them at home and was very pleased with the fish which was delicious. The chips were satisfactory. Thank you Barbara and your staff. I will be most happy to return again

The chip shop changed owernership several months ago and this was my first visit with new owners. Staff were friendly, suppers were nice but I like just out the fryer chips and these had been sitting awhile. That said sausages and pies were very good

WE went to this establishment some months back and decided not to return. Now under new management we tried it again. What a difference. We were pleasantly greeted, served with hot and fresh chips which remained hot until we returned home.Our previous condemnation of this establishment has now turned into full approval.Congratulations and we look forward to trying a full meal.

A very clean shop with a friendly staff person. Products sold however left a lot to be desired. Went here as it was handy to our accommodation and in a hurry - a mistake and should have gone back to Galore Fish & Chips! Ordered a piece of gummy shark, red spotted emperor ( again), a crab-stick, three deep fried pacific oysters and the minimum ( $2.00) amount of chips. Should have sampled the food in the shop before embarking on journey to our motel. The batter had totally disengaged from what we believed to be the gummy shark. The emperor had a most peculiar taste with and without the batter, for this too had parted company with the fish that was once encased inside of it. The crab-stick may have been fresh at some stage of its manufactured life but along with the oysters were stale to the extent all were deemed inedible. (Toast and apricot jam was a welcome substitute that got us through the night!)

Well worth a visit – while not easy to find (it’s a block back from the main road in amongst housing) the fish and chips were great value and fresh. Well placed for then driving 5 mins down to the beach to eat them, or in the queue for the evening ferry ot Orkney from Gills Bay. Opening times were 4pm to 8pm (not as listed on here) – suggest you ring up to check as no really other options around here if it’s closed. Shame the chap who answered the phone when I called to check opening times was a bit grumpy – but then probably the same chap who was cooking the fish. Hope he gets to smile a bit more knowing how good his frying is. Two ladies serving were lovely and friendly, though it would help so much to reduce delays if you were asked if you wanted fish as you start the queue, rather than queuing for 10 mins and then being asked if you want a fish, and then having to wait for it to be cooked.Minor quibbles though for great fish and chips

Enjoyed both the fish and the chips. If nearer Leicester would visit regularly as far better than our local takeaway.

I don't think we have ever had such good value fish & chips! We actually had a Fishermans Basket for Two and changed the crab sticks to sea scallops... $20 ! Amazing value!

the worst thing is definitely that they leave the skin on the fish , never encountered anything like this before and will never eat the fish from here again! The cheeseburger is okay nothing special , burger has quite a few bits of grizzle Chips are great as long as you dont get the scraps. They no longer sell the southern fried chicken kebabs which was amazing and really needs to be bought back ! The staff really need a course in customer management they stand not speaking to customers and look like they have been slapped its not hard to smile ! and to speak to your customers after all they are the ones who pay your wages and you want them to come back.

Hoping to have better fish and chips locally so decided to give them a try. The appearance of the staff was not a good advertisement for the premises and I was kept waiting several minutes for the fish to be cooked.Sadly, very disappointed with the chips( seemed to have been cooked earlier, were stale,cold and insipid) Arrived home and needed to re-heat them in the oven to make them even remotely edible. Fish eatable but miniscule in size. Could not recommend the curry sauce. Overall not good value for the money requested

We have had take aways from here under 3 different owners and its now in the right hands its great, always tasty. Personaly my only gripe is they leave the skin on the bottom of the fish but with a bit of extra effort I manage to avoid it. Keep up the good service, maybe longer opening hours or even on a sunday would be great.

Not open enough. Chips and fish not bad. Chinese ok. Had worse had better. Over staffed sometimes not enough staff other times.

The first time we went here we couldn't find it !! But when we did it was worth it.Big pieces of fish and plenty of chips.Not much more to say really except take them down to the harbour and sit and look at the wonderful view and throw a few to the birds. !!

The fish I suspect had been fried earlier in the day and was overlooked and greasy. Same for the chips I'm afraid!

Love thus chip shop anyway,but the deals they do cannot be beaten,and the pizza is wonderful! A real treat at a bargain price,and not horrible greasy pizza like the chains do!

Pizza had a biscuity base, not doughy, filling bland, poor value. Staff friendly, but would not go back.

Castletown chippy has all the standard offerings of a Scottich chip shop - haggis, burgers, battered Mars bar, etc - plus some reasonably good pizzas and various kebabs. Staff are friendly and efficient, but it can get very busy at peak times so it's worth 'phoning ahead with your order. They do special offers on their less busy nights (though they have been known to run out at odd times), and deliver locally.

Good sized portions and lovely fresh fish cooked to order not just left sitting until someone wanted it. Really nice helpful young girl serving too.

Did we choose a wrong time to come to this place, the chips were not properly cooked, the fish was disgusting, not worth the money.
