We went there for dinner on Thursday night for our anniversary. When we had finished our two courses the waitress presented us with the bill even though we hadn't asked for it. She said take your time there is no rush. We were still drinking our wine when she appeared with the card machine even though we hadn't aksed. I was so taken aback that I just paid. I decided to compain about the way we were treated. I spoke to the manager who offered us a bottle of wine as compensation. The watress also added on a 10% service charge which she didn't deserve. She was rude and abrupt and seemed to single us out as she didn't do this to any of the other diners. I am appalled at the way we were treated.

The staff was friendly and attentive. The pizzas were Naples style and delicious. You can even get a haggis pizza; although, I just stuck with pepperoni and sausage. They have more seating in the back…plenty of seating.

The food was good, and the service great, but I was expecting a better menu from a hotel of this level. My own fault, really, as I didn't check the menu when I booked the room and dinner. The bar and whisky range was very good indeed, and the hotel is known for this. The bistro menu was largely pizzas, with a few pub standards - burger, fish and chips, etc. which was not what I expected from a hotel of this level. So this is not a bad review, more a warning to check that the menu suits before booking dinner!

Main hotel and the bar are very olde worlde and full of character. The staff are friendly and helpful. Our room was lovely and very quirky. BUT the dining room is bland and devoid of any character at all, rather like a school canteen. The menu is very restricted, fish and chips, burger, fried fish and a veggie option, or a pizza (lots of pizzas) . Not really what you'd expect in a hotel charging £360 a night for 2 people. The food wasn't even presented or cooked well, eh burger and chips, was just that, no salad or anything to brighten up the plate. Breakfast was mediocre, pleasant cold offerings , hot was bacon and eggs that were on a hotplate and had been there a while. Again at breakfast the staff were good. Generally poor value and a disappointment.

Food is very good. Predominantly pizza dishes on the menu, but also a decent number of other dishes. Their fish dish and broccoli side dish were excellent. Very accommodating service.

Stopped here for lunch, no staff in bar so stood there for 10 minutes, wandered through the back and got a table in restaurant however the room was noticeably cold so we all put our jackets back on! Was really disappointed in menu - its pizza or pizza or pizza or fish and chips basically. Its a mish mash of a menu to be honest and actually quite hard to read with faint brown small font on brown paper- not very inclusive! Have to say the sweet potato soup was lovely, full marks, however the fish (on the small side portion wise) and chips was nothing special, not too sure the chips were frozen efforts and my pizza (there was nothing I really fancied on the menu) was soggy in the middle so it was disappointing and only ate 1/4 of it. So, not overly impressed. Went to the toilets, still old style paper towels, no electric hand dryers and noticed the decor and the carpets all a bit tired. I think you need more than the fact the building is a castle to impress, shame as it could be really lovely, the bar is a nice cosy area. Perhaps evening meals have a better menu but I do not think I would rush back for lunch. It's not that cheap either..................

Struggled to find anywhere that did take away pizza in Dornoch so went here and although the restaurant prices for pizza were £13+, we thought it would be cheaper for take away. Unfortunately not. So nearly £50 for 3 take away pizzas which were OK in both size and quality felt quite steep to me and I would hesitate to come back. Reduce the prices or increase the size and quality and I would definitely return. Not really sure why there is no take away pizza place in Dornoch though. If someone was willing to open one, I think they would be doing OK...!

This restaurant has a comfortable, relaxed vibe. I have a food intolerance that makes choosing a meal from any menu very challenging to say the least . The server and chef at this restaurant accommodated my dietary needs without question . The meal was delicious and suited my needs . Many many thanks for going the extra mile. The Castle Whisky Bar and Bistro is well worth a visit for its great menu , wonderful staff and welcoming ambience .

My partner and I had an excellent meal here on Friday evening. I felt compelled to leave a review because our meal was truly on par to that of a top quality restaurant, which I think is an impressive feat for a hotel restaurant. The food was amazing and so well executed, everything from flavours to presentation was outstanding. I had the fish of the day (salmon) and my partner the beef, both were faultless. The staff were very friendly and prompt. Would definitely return again! We also drank at the bar and were very impressed with the knowledge of the staff.

Was ignored when we walked in and wasn’t offered a seat until we asked. After 15 minutes of waiting for them to take our order we had to call out. Ella had no knowledge of the local drinks and was rude throughout our visit. A venue with lots of potential that completely missed the mark. Only positive was the Black Isle Lager.

The service was adequate and friendly if a little perfunctory. The food was nice with no complaints but it is more like pub than a hotel restaurant and the prices were inflated like lost hotels. The room was very bland and lacked ambience, and even though light outside they had all blinds shut which made it feel like a school dining room. Would go back but only if they adjusted the prices to reflect the level of food offered, rather than what they aspire to.

Following the sign against the wall which advised customers to find a table and order drinks on the left we did just that. Beer garden was at about 40% capacity and as we went to order drinks we were abruptly asked “are we residents” No, “are we staying at the hotel tonight” No, sorry we can’t serve you. Glad we took our custom elsewhere!

Visited on a Tuesday night for a quick drink during our overnight in Dornoch. We entered and made our way to the empty bar and mentioned we were only there for a drink. The woman behind the bar said we should go to the restaurant and they'd find us a seat. On we went. We spoke to a guy who going by his uniform was the shift manager and said we'd been sent to him. From the start he didn't seem keen to entertain us and stated they were "very busy but could fit us in for one drink." OK we said and he asked us what we wanted as we stood there. I asked if he had a drinks menu and he told me no which I found incredible so we just plumped for the first drinks that came into out heads and made our way in to the beer garden. We spent about 45 minutes there and other than delivering our drinks not one staff member came near us. They did go to other tables and one even got the mysterious drinks menu! We considered leaving at one point to see if anyone ran after us to pay but decided to do the right thing and search for a staff member to take our money. Maybe all the other customers were residents but the second you have customers in they should all be treated the same. Worth noting as well that of the 10 tables outside no more than 5 were taken at any point. A long review for one round of drinks but that's how annoying it was for no apparent reason. Enough for us to mention it to people when they ask us about Dornoch. Pity.

Been to the restaurant and indeed have stayed in the castle before and very enjoyable on all occasions. Until today. We were told the restaurant was closed and told to sit at a table in the bar area. The menu was brunch/lunch. Not a good place to be if you have hearing issues...very noisy and not a relaxed atmosphere. The food took ages to arrive. The waiter was rude and abrupt, difficult to understand as he spoke so fast. Whilst we were waiting for our food....at least 3 if not 4 more groups of people arrived and were taken through to the dining area to eat!! The menu did not reflect what was on the plate. 6oz Scotch beef burger, cheddar, mustard mayo, jenga chips, salad arrived in a bun. If the menu had said that I would have asked to have it without the bun...waste of food because I cant eat it. The mustard mayo was non existent as i think it had soaked into the bun and the was a horrible smoky taste. Not sure if it was the cheese or the burger. Chips were very nice. Salad was nice but served in a tub suitable more for chips. Lovely coffee. Horrible carrot cake and horrible millionaires shortcake. A very small Diet coke cost £1.75! A blackcurrant and lemonade served in a half filled gin glass, charged £1.25. Nice place to sit and have a drink or a coffee and scone by the fire but not for a relaxing lunch.Waiter needs some customer service training.

We enjoyed our meal but it was a bit overpriced and the ambiance is really lacking. We were there for an early dinner, around 6:30pm, but the music was very low, the lightly too high, and it felt like we were in a dining hall and not a rather pricey restaurants. The bar had great ambiance; I wish they had translated that to the restaurant. The service was great as was the food so it made up for it.

Visited here whilst staying nearby. The restaurant was very quiet for a Monday evening. We ordered crab and macaroni starter and the smoked salmon. Both were very nice. For mains we had venison which was lovely and the hake. Unfortunately my side dish of broccoli was completely forgotten and therefore arrived very late into the meal. Also had the baked Alaska to share which was ok but heavy on the whisky as it wasn’t set alight well enough so this spoilt the flavour somewhat. Price wise although the food was nice, it’s priced more aligned to fine dining restaurants and I would question whether it’s value for money on that basis given our experience. Slightly disappointing as a result.

My partner and I visited here recently as a wee treat for ourselves. After having seen that there is a new chef and the photographs I’d seen on social media, I was really excited to try it. As soon as I saw the scallops on the menu, despite the price of £14, I was keen to get them as id saw a photo they’d posted of them on social media and they looked huge! To my complete disappointment, I got 3 tiny scallops. It was a nice dish, tasted fine and were cooked fine, but it was nothing memorable, especially for that price. My partner had the pigeon salad, which he really enjoyed. I had the lamb dish, which good, it was cooked well. My partner had the pork 3 ways and again, it was fine, tasted nice. Our desserts were much like the starters. £11 for a plate of strawberries and sorbet! We were expecting this to be absolutely outstanding for this price, but that’s all it was, strawberries and sorbet. Couldn’t believe it. I had the coffee and doughnuts, which thankfully was absolutely beautiful. Which for its price I’d probably pay over and over again, as it was that beautiful. Felt in this instance, the prices just didn’t match the quality of the dishes, with the exception of the coffee and doughnuts, which is a shame. This is definitely a place for the tourists with plenty of money to spend.

Having eaten here previously we were expecting something good but after the meal we felt let down especially considering the large bill! My cured salmon starter was tasteless so its as well there was not too much of it! My wife's main course was O.K but the meat in my main course which was lamb was hardly edible as it was so fatty. If there is one thing I do not like it is unrendered lamb fat. However the vegetables and sauce that accompanied it were good. No explanation was given with the cheese dessert and some of the cheeses were dry. The service was mediocre and not what is expected at these prices. Much better value for money can be obtained within a short distance from this establishment.

We reserved a castle hotel but what we found rather ressembled a cafeteria and the bedroom was average. The staff was friendly but the entire restaurant room was disapointing (no decoration, dirty carpet, no charming atmosphere) and the food, too. We ate a burger, it was okay but not the best. One of us took local haddock but it was just fish and chips. We thought it would become better with a panacotta for the dessert, but it was gum-like. It was served with "crumble" and that was not crunchy at all. There were some berries but the strawberries were like cooked and not tasty. The sticky pudding was good, though. The dinner was the least good and most expensive one of our trip in Scotland! In summary there were nice people but the whole thing was definitely not worth the money.

A medium sized dining room behind a foreboding bar. Excellent beer served, and the menu included imaginative and well balanced flavours. We would go again.

The guy behind the bar, who was ever present on our many visits in five days, had an incredible knowledge of whiskey. My partner was celebrating his 50th so asked about whiskies from 1967. The barman knew all three that they served from that year in great detail. We also had dinner in the restaurant for 11 of us. Food was lovely and the service exceptional. A very friendly and welcoming hotel. Thank you!! Jen and Andy

This pub is one of the best of Dornoch. The decor inside is very typical and especially thanks to the barman for the hot chocolate !!! it is the best I drank in Scotland ever! At the opposite side of the street you will see the amazing Cathedral with a carpark very close also. Dont hesitate to eat something cause the food is delicious. "The" place to be in Dornoch.

We ate and drank here both very good. The menu is varied and good selection I picked chowder for my starter which was very tasty packed with fish and seafood almost a meal in itself.Mains was stuffed chicken on a bean cassoulet which was good but a little salty for our taste (don't use salt) and the beans a little aldente. But tasty.I regret however not having the mussels which was massive portions and looked and smelt good. After the meal we retreated to the whisky bar there we spent time chatting to the very knowledgable and enthusiastic barman who suggested we try a couple of whisky that fitted our taste but not readily available.Very good night.

We went to the Castle Whisky Bar and restaurant to have lunch and an hour later to have something to drink. I had a 14 year old Royal Brackla which was bottled in 1969 one of many rare whiskies that are available here. The hospitality is perfect and their knowledge about all the whiskies and the stories behind them is something special. I would recommend this whisky bar above all others that I have visited in Scotland.

The whiskey was great . The bar tender spent some time working through which ones he thought I would like. The wine is so so .

The bar side is very interesting with a load of scotches and other spirits, some made there. The beers were more craft thatn the usual Bellhaven, Tennant, Stella seen so frequently.Dinner was a bit of a disappointment due to service - our party of 8 split in to two 4s, and the flow from drinks to meal was slow, and the wait staff seemed overwhelmed by the options afforded by the bar. The bartender did pair a scotch with a chocolate dessert that was great, which was the highlight of the meal.

Didn't eat but tried a few of the rare whiskies under lock and key in their excellent cabinet. Lovely atmosphere. If I lived closer I would spend all of my money here.

Lovely village. Beautiful castle. Wonderful and very interesting whiskey bar. Superb dinner and wonderful breakfast. Owners of the whiskey bar are incredible people who are doing some great work distilling their own whiskey! Loved it very much! Highly recommend.

Good food, friendly staff, lots of whisky. Shame the restaurant area is very lacking in atmosphere could be so much nicer. About £30 per head.

Went in here to have a pint and a whisky.Very friendly staff.A very good of selection of whiskies which had me looking at the whiskylist for 15 minutes before I could decide.I could imagine with the fireplace lit in the evening, sitting in the couch with friends this place would be fantastic. So have to come back one day with foreamentioned friends.

We know the Tongue area very well, and like to eat locally, so it was obvious we would decide to eat at the Craggan, and i'm happy we did! The restaurant area is welcoming and clean, staff friendly, and the car park was easy even with a big van. The only problem was choosing from the menu! So many tasty things - i wish we had more time to visit again.. All three of us enjoyed our food, and we shared everything so i know it was all delicious. Thank you for making a rather wet evening so special..

I recently had the pleasure of spending a delightful day at Dores Inn, and I still find myself reminiscing about the experience six months later. Nestled along the shores of the iconic Loch Ness, this charming inn offers a perfect blend of stunning views, a warm atmosphere, and exceptional service. Upon arrival, we were greeted by a lovely ambiance that sets the tone for a relaxing visit. The inn has ample seating, both indoors and outdoors, making it easy to find a cozy spot to enjoy the picturesque scenery. We opted for an outside table, and it turned out to be the best decision of the day. The views of the loch were absolutely breathtaking, providing a serene backdrop for our meal. Speaking of the meal, I must rave about the food—simply sublime! I usually find coleslaw unappealing, but Dores Inn's homemade version was a game changer. It was fresh, flavorful, and complemented our dishes beautifully. Every bite was a testament to the culinary care that goes into their offerings. After our satisfying meal, we joined a Rib-Boat journey on the loch, which was an exhilarating way to experience the surroundings. The thrill of speeding across the water, combined with the breathtaking views of the loch and its mythical charm, made for an unforgettable adventure. As a memento of our day, I couldn't resist purchasing one of their handmade crochet teddies of Nessie. It's now a cherished keepsake that brings back fond memories of our visit. To wrap up our day, we took a leisurely walk along the shoreline. The tranquility of the loch, coupled with the stunning natural beauty surrounding us, was the perfect ending to a fantastic day. Overall, Dores Inn exceeded my expectations in every way. From the lovely atmosphere and great views to the delectable food and friendly service, it’s a place I highly recommend. If you're looking for an exceptional day out near Loch Ness, don’t miss the opportunity to visit this gem. I still think about that wonderful day, and I can’t wait to return!

This was a lovely experience, the food was not ' swimming in grease' as i saw from another review, but it was great to see that the more recent reviews have been validated. We went here for my birthday at the end of october and honestly everything was really lovely . the service was great they were so friendly from the getgo, the charcuterie board we had for starter was very filling and diverse just wish they would have told us what the cheeses were ( i think the brie was from tain though it was familair) but thats a minor niggle that we had no info. the main courses were fab the skin on chips were AMAZING , and its a dog friendly place which we loved , we dont have dogs but we did get to pet some which made our day !
