Castle View Fish Bar in Carmarthenshire

We have had great chips here in the past, yummy curry sauce and catch of the day fish. But during our weekend stay just couldn't find out from anywhere when they would be open. 😟 Common you can really do better! It's 2023, even if you change your hours spontaneously you can still post it, it only takes 1 minute .

Hoping to have fish & chips on the foreshore this evening. Blow me if this place wasn’t closed! Ruined our plans. Makes no sense to be running a business and not open on a bank holiday weekend. Why doesn’t the owner sell the business to someone who really wants to work hard and provide a service for Laugharne residents and holiday makers alike.

Tried several times to get fish and chips from this shop during our week's holiday in Laugharne but no matter when we went it was always shut. No notice in window explaining why or advising of new hours. Eventually asked lady serving in the nearby gift shop (highly recommended by the way, beautiful gifts!) if she knew what their opening hours were and to my amazement she advised that the shop has closed permanently, v disappointing. A notice in the window letting customers know this might have been helpful.

We visited this shop a number of times during our two week stay in Laugharne before we actually found it open. Chips were hard (sounded like gravel being dropped on a tin roof as I put them on the plate) dry and luke warm despite eating them within five minutes of leaving the shop & priced at £4 regular and £5 large. Whether they were trying to create a triple cooked effect, I've no idea but really didn't achieve it. Battered sausage wasn't battered once you cut into it as the batter just fell off the sausage, again very hard and very dry. Menu quite limited and premises not particularly inviting. Staffed by two ladies who really didn't seem particularly happy to be there and definitely could never be classed as friendly and welcoming. Wasnt offered salt and vinegar which would have made it all a little bit more palatable. So disappointing after a long day exploring the beautiful local area.

Would love to review, however when we got there at 7.05pm, it had already closed despite the info saying 7.30pm! No info on the door, or even a note to say ‘sorry closed early’ . So many people were turning up, just to be disappointed, especially during holiday season.

Popped in and had a regular portion of chips. The chips were a good portion and so was the price but the quality was poor including some bad ones.

On a cold day, I was very glad (with my wife and our friends) to have some lunch here - we had the Welsh Cawl and bread. It was really excellent. And quick service. My wife and I will be back in Laugharne in a few weeks time - I hope we can come back for the Welsh Cawl. If Dylan Thomas was still alive - I am quite certain he would be eat here too! (Well, we can all imagine, can't we!)

We visited the area for a week in August, and visited Laugharne Castle and the infamous Boathouse where Dylan Thomas got his inspiration for his writing. Lunchtime came, and we spotted this Chippy laid back a little bit. A very friendly lady took our order and explained that the cod would be cooked fresh. Sure enough within a few minutes we were called and served piping hot fresh cod and chips, including our granddaughters childrens Cod bites. We even had a jumbo sausage for our pet dog! We sat outside on benches, and thoroughly enjoyed our delicious freshly cooked fish and chips, the best we had in the whole area! Fully recommend this family and pet friendly chippy, awesome fresh food, with great service and friendly chat.

We have been here numerous times in the past and they were excellent 10/10. So, we came back again looking forward to our fish and chips. The chips had a mixture of small pieces which were more like scraps. The fish was extremely greasy. On returning to ask if we could have new chips, we were greeted by a very rude lady who refused to do so and told us there was nothing wrong with them. We did finally get the money back for 2 portions of chips but maybe we should have realised why there wasn’t a queue at all. Very disappointed!

We were with a large group of friends - almost two dozen of us - who arrived at the very end of the day wanting a seaside supper. The staff here were great - good humoured and helpful. I was impressed with how wonderfully well they coped with the sudden onslaught of so many hungry people at once. Our food was cooked from fresh, so there was a slight wait, but so worth it! The chips were light, and crisp. Absolutely delicious! The fish batter was also light and the fish was cooked to perfection. White and lovely and clean tasting. Really great food, and excellent value for money. We were give our takeaways in neat, strong cardboard packs with wooden forks for those who wanted. We were the last customers of the day, as they are currently closing the at half seven. Another time, I'll go earlier to eat in their cafe, which looked like a nice place to bring my family for a treat. Really glad to have found this gem of a place and will be back again soon.

We went to Castle View after being disappointed by the lack of vegan options at ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ across the road. We didn’t know if this place would have any options, but we thought we’d try it out. The woman behind the counter was super friendly and so lovely. She informed me that the chips were always cooked separately to the meat and fish, and she even let me know that I could have the gravy too! This almost never happens; when you’re vegan usually people can’t wait to see the back of you. I haven’t had chips and gravy in a chip shop since I was about 14, and the chips at Castle View were amazing. Really nicely cooked, super tasty, large portions. Will probably visit every time I come back to Laugharne.

Had 2 chicken & mushroom pie & chips here yesterday, both my husband & myself have been Bad all night, the chips were dripping in grease and obviously been re- fried a few times. The pies were inedible, we opened them up and it looked like some sort of canned dog food or something! No white chicken just lumps of jellied mess. Not even my dog touched it and that’s saying something! What annoyed me more was wasting £11 for something that went in the bin. Shocking! Won’t return ever!

Great Chips ... fresh fish, highly recommended. Do, however, check the opening hours out of season as they are closed a on a couple of days and only open in the evenings on others.

Totally agree with the post before me as seem to close when it suits them rather than sticking to advertised times. Won't visit again!!!

Just finished some of the best fish and chips I have had for a long time. Huge piece of perfectly cooked cod, and the best chips I've had anywhere - just lovely.Good virus protection, and a very easy purchase.In addition to the standard fish and chips, there was an iteresting menu, with things like corned beef rissoles too.

We had travelled from North Wales to South, really didn't want to go wandering around looking for a place to eat. So elected on Fish & Chips. Covid protection was excellent, although busy we did not have to wait long and took our food provided in nice boxes up to our accommodation. Fish were huge and the batter well cooked, chips were so yummy and such a massive portion. So glad we made the decision to use there services.

Stopped here one evening especially for the fish and chips as we’d been before, maybe 2 or 3 years ago and wanted to see if it was still as good, we were not disappointed, seating inside was closed which is understandable for the climate we’re in, but sat on bench outside . Definitely recommend a visit here, just as good as last time we visited and will return.

This is absolutely 5 star plus and l’m not an easy customer to impress. If AA Gill was still around he would agree. Locally sourced line caught fish cooked perfectly in fresh oil, by Caroline or one of her fabulous smilie team. Highly recommended

Called mid week for lunch. Had fish and chips and pie and chips. Fish and pie was lovely. Fish cooked lovely and they give you loads of chips. Chips were really nice. Will return when we are next in laugharne.

Good selection of different foods of varying quality. The burgers were good but the lamb and mint pie as well as the fish and chips were average.

Said online they shut at 8.30pm. Spent all day travelling to Laugharne. Got to chip shop for 8pm. My father and mother went in to order. Due to my disability I couldn’t get out the car quickly so my carer went in to see the menu and came back out to tell me what there was. I said I would like scampi and halloumi fries and he wanted fish and battered sausage. By 8:07pm he comes back out and says the woman is refusing to give us anything we want and will only do sausages or pie and regular chips. Yet she served my parents fish and chicken curry moments before. Cheers then. Great service. Sausages were reminiscent of my old school dinners and the whole thing was incredibly greasy.

First of all, the price of the fish is ridiculous. £6 for a poor sized fish, plus £2.50 chips plus each tiny sachet of non branded sauce costing 10p!!! £9 for a that...it better be good...No. Soggy chips and a battered sausage that falls right out of the batter. Fish was ok, but £6??? Should be double the size for that kind of money.

Tried this fish and chip shop for the first time yesterday. There is a good vegetarian choice as well. I had the veggie burger but there were veggie rissoles, roasted vegetable pie and haloumi slices to choose from. There were gluten free options as well I think. My wife had the haddock "the best I've had for a long time" she said. The chips were very nice and my (I think home made) veggie burger was very nice and the mushy peas were proper! Altogether a great takeaway meal 5 minutes from our Seasons holiday accommodation.

Had lovely vegetarian cheese and leek rissole and also fried halloumi. Chips gluten free and all freshly cooked.

We were in a holiday rental house and wanted not to cook one evening. The fish and chips here are excellent - crispy light batter and lovely chips. Mushy peas good too. Good selection of children's meals which come with a drink. Good vegetarian selection which included roast vegetable and goat cheese pie, fried halloumi and onion rings. Also fresh cockles from the bay. And lovely home made coleslaw.Very friendly efficient service. Large portions.You can eat in or outside or take away.

On a visit to Laugharne we stopped here for lunch, food was freshly cooked and very nice, we also loved the tasty chips.

Limited opening times and gratefully cooked to order. The staff are hard working and efficient which means you get hot, fresh food without too much waiting. Chips are excellent..slightly crispy on the outside..soft and tasty inside. Theres lots of choice for fish specials, local cockles being one. This is a restuarant and chippy with seats inside and out. The premises are situated in a circle of pubs, shops and other eateries. All in all, a popular spot.

We spent a week in Laugharne and had fish suppers when we arrived and as we were leaving. Both were fantastic, as was the cod chowder in between. If you're looking for fresh and home cooked a must visit!

Went for fish and chips today and in the words of hubby it was “beltin”. Cod and chips were freshly cooked and tasted great. The shop is tight on the square, has seating inside and out and is open most days until around 8.30.

A dog friendly fish and chip shop with an area to sit down and eat as well as take away. The food was lovely washed down with a large mug of tea, though you could have wine. It was good to be there with our dogs On a break away.

Really glad that we came across this place as we were passing through. Eating in, there's a cute seating area (perfect décor for the seaside) which really adds to the atmosphere. The service was great and the food was really nice.

Very good food, absolutely huge portions. We each got an order of fish and chips, and we should have gotten 1 fish each and 1 chips to share. They did not have any tartar sauce – we ran into the shop next door and purchased a jar for £1. You can order and sit outside, or sit down and be served (different prices).

Opted for a chippy tea to save a few quid whilst on our hols. 1 kids meal, a pie, 2 battered sausage and 2 portions of chips and 1 rissol and 2 pots of sauce came to a little under 30 quid. To be fair the rissol was amazeballs. The other stuff was nice but not out of this world. Maybe the could save some cash by wrapping the chips in paper instead of polystyrene then they'd be able to lower their prices and do their bit for the environment. Staff were friendly.

Good variety in the menu. Much of the produce home-made. Some nice local specials on offer. Staff friendly enough. Also a seated area which I believ is dog-friendly. Reasonably priced.

We have frequented this establishment every time we visit Laugharne and they never fail to deliver superb freshly cooked fish and chips. The owner delighted in telling us where she gets her produce from which shows she has great pride in her service.

Called in randomly on a wet evening. Quite possibly the best fish and chips I’ve had in years. The fish cooked to order was the size of a small whale and beautifully cooked crispy batter. My hubby had a steal pie which he loved and the chips were amazing.

Sat over at the cross we felt peckish and I ventured across the road to get some chips. Very nice chips and pleasant service.

Lunch stop on the way to Tenby. We had the cod bites & a haddock and chips, washed down with a local ale and local cider. Friendly service and all freshly cooked. Lovely chatting to the owner too!

We had take out fish and chips from Castle View, they were freshly fried and in oil so vegan and veggie diners can enjoy. Plenty of additional choices for veggies, too. Would have liked slightly chunkier chips, but otherwise good with pleasant staff.

I would recommend a course in customer service, as the Castle View certainly lacks any. We ate in the restaurant, which seemed an inconvenience! It took over 15 minutes to get our drinks, then a further 20minutes for food. I wouldn’t normally complain, but it wasn’t busy in the restaurant or takeaway. My husbands fish and chips were good, but my faggots were dry with awful instant gravy. When they charge high prices, you expect the quality to match.

I have to say it’s not often I have to put a terrible review but I’m not walking away from this one.

My wife and I called in for fish and chips. There was a 15 minute wait because it was so busy but it was worth it. The fish was huge and the chips were well cooked and crispy. They were served in boxes so we could eat them outside, no problem. A varied menu even offering different flavour batters. Excellent value.

When a friend said this was the best chippy I was naturally sceptical, as I've been to many of these so called "best" chippies. However, after visiting I found I had to agree and yes this IS THE BEST chippy I have ever visited! The portions are huge as too the fish and the best local potato's are used to make the BEST chips I have ever tried (apart from my wife's of course). Highly recommended!

Had Chicken curry and chips tonight. Chips were lovely and crispy and the chicken curry was lovely. Have previously had the cod and Chips. Again crispy and not at all greasy. I would highly recommend. Dog friendly too!!!

Called here on Friday for a quick lunch with my wife and beautiful grandson, food was excellent and staff brilliant, choose to eat inside as it was very hot and my grandson was feeling slightly under the weather, waitress couldn't have been better, and owner especially helpful. Haddock, chops and mushy peas were brilliant and would recommend them if you call as it's a meal that won't disappoint.

Telephoned our order . . . Definitely not a Welsh accent between us. Order waiting for us on time. Vinegar not on order so a little polystyrene container provided for free rather than unwrapping the hot food to add in shop. Very impressed with service and food quality

Chips were really disappointing, refries. Brown, hard and greasy. This was our second visit and the chips weren't great the first time, but we thought they were having an "off day" and gave them a second try. Big mistake. The chips were awful AGAIN, but worse than before, so we wouldn't go here again. For two portions of fish and chips it cost over £14, which we wouldn't have minded if the chips were as expected. Having visited Tenby and seen the quality of the chips there, I'd give Laugharne chippy a miss and go there instead another time. We would have complained, but we had already left the area before eating them and realising.

We stopped for lunch after a walk with the dog. It was great to find a fish and chip shop that catered for gluten intolerance. The lady that runs it was very friendly and helpful and did me steamed cod and chips. The fish was lovely and fresh and the chips were wonderful, we all thought it was the best fish and chips we have had!

Having enjoyed a lovely meal when we visited Laugharne a few months ago and written a very positive review we were certain we'd enjoy a takeaway. Unfortunately this was not the case. They had limited choice of pies and portions were small and definitely overpriced. This was such a shame, will not visit again.

Had a lovely portion of cod and chips today. Skinless battered cod cooked to order. Tasted great - we really enjoyed it. Staff were friendly and helpful. The area to eat in was closed but it was a lovely day so we wanted to eat outside on the pretty tables. Dog friendly too.

Had a takeaway to eat overlooking the bay. Best fish and chips I have tasted for some time. Highly recommended.

Always go here when in Wales. Lovely village with beautiful walk by the Boathouse. Small and quaint, but perfect for a visit.

This is a great cafe for the end of an estuary walk, especially as they let you tuck your dog under the table. It's friendly, everything is really nicely presented, and I love that you can get veggie curry or faggots and peas as well as fish and chips. Such a well-run, comfortable place - I love it.

Called in after a gruelling 9 Hour journey. Staff were friendly and we had haddock and chips to take out to eat in the lodge we were staying at. Fish and chips were great.and cooked to order will certainly go again.

We used the restaurant area and enjoyed good helpings of fish, chips and peas. Friendly staff make this cheap alternative worth going to.

Very friendly staff served us giant portions of fish and chips, very nicely cooked. Take it away, across the road and through the car park opposite. We ate it sitting on the picnic benches beside the castle overlooking the estuary and it was fantastic!

Regular chip shop, large portion but pricey. Might be an idea to share instead of buy too much and throw half away.

Superb piece of cod, with well cooked chips. Fish was very fresh and flaked beautifully, a decent size too - barely fitting into the box! The battered sausages were also consumed with gusto, calming a very hangry son.

Had fish and chips here. Nowhere else open or with reasonable menu. This is in August! The fish was very good the chips ok but I think they were refried? I ate the lot anyway sat on a bench by the castle. You can eat in.I give top marks because they were open for business.

There is a large amount of "homemade" items on the menu, this is good to see!Nice homemade rissoles were enjoyed by myself, my partner had battered fish.It was a shame more people were not enjoying the food on a Friday evening in July.
