Order 4 simple pub meals: took over 30 mins to come and the place was quiet . The waitress dropped food off the plates as she served and kept swearing . The meals were very poor very basic small portions and poorly cooked and presented , very disappointing as we have been before about 4 years ago and food was lovey

Visited Richmond for a weekend break with the in-laws and our 4 year old. We visited this pub on the Friday night and as the beer was good - we booked back in for Sunday lunch. We were told they don't take bookings due to many people not turning up, we offered a deposit and they agreed to take the booking without the deposit which was really nice. On the Sunday, i explained that I was vegetarian and asked if they could possibly do me a roast, not knowing if everything was cooked in animal fat etc. The waitress agreed to check and the chef then appeared to discuss what he could do. The chef explained they could accommodate me with mash, all vegetables and vegetarian gravy but could not give me roast potatoes due to them being cooked in animal fat, which i understood. I noted a possible option of vegetarian sausages on the other menu and asked if they had any could they pop a couple on - he said he would take a look and will sort something. The roast dinner was AMAZING!!!! A huge pile of mash, roast veggies, cauliflower cheese, carrots, broccoli, green beans and my own gravy boat. There was also 3 little 'patties' of butternut squash breaded cutlets (frozen but cooked beautifully and they went really nicely!). I ate it at breakneck speed due to it being so tasty and forgot to take a picture - which is my only regret. I followed this up with a sticky toffee pudding and custard which was absolutely superb. The food was home cooked to perfection, the rest of my party enjoyed roast dinners (beef and pork options) and they all agreed the meat 'fell away' in your mouth. There were clean plates all round. The reason i felt so strongly about leaving a review was because there are never any options for a veggie roast dinner, and i have absolutely no idea why as we love them too! The fact this place went to such an effort to accommodate me made it extra special and i cannot recommend this place enough for that. They even made a big fuss of my 4 year old who ate all of his roast dinner too. PLEASE serve veggie roasts as an option (vegetable lasagne was on the menu) instead of the usual pasta option - as you did an amazing job and it was extremely tasty - the butternut cutlets were delicious and went really well. The next time we visit Richmond we will surely be calling in for a Sunday roast if this is still available. Thank you!

Thought we would try this for our evening meal and it was so nice we went back again the next night and the night after that. It was a pub that the locals go to, always a good sign for the traveller. The beers that I tried were well kept and really nice and the food was delicious. Excellent starters, excellent mains and we never got to dessert because we were always full. There was even a quiz night on Thursday. The only reason we didn't go back again was we had to come home but when we are in Richmond again this is where we will be eating.

My partner and I have never stayed overnight here, as we live locally. But we do enjoy the atmosphere of this place as a pub. Especially fun if there is a band on. Dog friendly. Can get a little crowded, but in a cosy way. Just wish there was a beer garden, then it’s be five stars from me! Anyway, definitely recommend this place. Cosy fireplace is a treat in wintertime. Large selection of drinks.

Just popping in for a bit to eat, friendly lady behind the bar greeted us. A little dull in all areas, and very cold. The pictures on the website look much more inviting. Orded food which was recommended to us by the bar lady. Pork in breadcrumbs chips, and peas. To say i was looking forward to this meal which i have eaten many times in various locations before was very much of a let down. The pork was tough and not seasoned, same as the mushroom sauce, undercooked chips and peas. I am guessing they work hard with a team to offer a warm welcome and great cooked food, as stated on the website. This may be a one of however, i will visit again. This is only my opinion.

We booked a table well in advance of our visit. We turned up only to see a sign in the window, no food tonight. We asked at the bar (just in case it was an old sign) only to be told with a shrug, no food tonight. No apology was offered. They did not contact us (even though I left my phone number when I made the booking). Not my idea of how to run a business. I took my business elsewhere and had a great evening in the Black Lion where the food was really lovely and the beer was well kept. Glad the Castle were shoddy, wouldn't have found such a nice place otherwise. Shame on you.

If am being honest we (myself and the family) really ended up in this pub since no one else seemed to be serving food on a Monday evening - and from the outside i think we would have walked past if there was more option available. We stayed here for 2 nights and were very happy. The staff were very friendly. The full-English breakfasts were top notch and plentiful. All of the rooms seemed to have names rather than numbers and we were in "Station". There were just a couple of issues that prevent me from awarding this place 5 stars. The hand basin took forever to drain, the shower head failed to grip the upright bar and so could only be used at chest height, and the bedroom window had to be wedged if you wanted to open it. Because we were only there for 2 nights, we worked around these 3 issues, and, to be fair, we didn't bother to mention any of them to the hosts. However, since a suitable wedge was already in place in the window when we arrived, they were clearly aware of that issue at least. The building is old and the creaking and sloping floorboards are part of the overall charm.

Visited this establishment for New Years Eve and Day with our friends to celebrate. The break began fabulously. Great rooms, lovely relaxed atmosphere, good bar prices, only 10 of us staying in the pub taking all 5 rooms for two nights. Breakfast on NY Day awesome, plenty of choice although you do have to order night before it was local produce, freshly cooked and delicious. We went out to explore Richmond only to receive a message to say there had been a mix up and our friends staying in 3 of the rooms could not stay NY day night as their rooms were booked! Our friend had 3 emails confirming this but they were still told the 2 of the rooms were booked. On our return we were apologised to and told it was due to mix up by previous owners, we had all booked in February and we found out the new guests had only booked the rooms a couple of days previously. This put a dampener on the rest of our stay as our friends had no choice but to go home!. We stayed and made the best of it. Donna went out of her way to make us welcome, late lunch and breakfast the next morning were fabulous and again delicious! The landlady also apologised again the next day and we suggested she contact any other guests booked with them to make sure their bookings were correct before taking more. This would have been a lovely celebration and start to 2020 but was marred by a massive mistake made by the new owners. Such a shame as the rooms, food and bar are great value for money. The tavern is also in a great location to explore Richmond and surrounding areas.

Incredibly well kept beer of the very highest standard served by real people with interesting tales to tell and, at the time of my visit, as many dogs in the place as people (Labs, borders, whippets, you name it). . We’d left the girls in the hot tub in the cottage and headed for a couple of social drinks. We fell into the first bar we saw in the market place. The Castle Cavern is a fine old style bar. The staff were excellent, really friendly and despite a busy bar knew our 4 drink round each order. The bar is long and quite narrow. There is seating all the way through to the back. Dogs are regular visitors (with their owners!) and were well controlled. The food was really popular and looked decent with homely portions. There are a few avoidable bars in the market place, but none better than the Castle Tavern. We will be back.

In my humble opinion the best pub in the town. Went in on A Sunday afternoon and had a Sunday dinner and a couple of pints. It was busy and had to wait about 25 minutes for my food to arrive which was well worth the wait. Originally went in due to the cask marque on the door and wasn't dissapointed with a choice of six real ales alongside the usual lagers and beers. The Adnams ghost ship was excellent. Went back in the evening which was quieter and greeted by a roaring fire which the barman kept topped up with logs. The Ghost ship had run out but had been replaced with Wainwrights - happy days !!!

We recently stayed at The Castle Tavern in Richmond. The check in was a little disorganised but once shown to the room we were quite surprised. The room was large and recently renovated. Great outlook onto the market square. The breakfast was ok. Freshly made but nothing to write home about. The staff were, on the whole, friendly and professional. Drinks in the bar were very reasonably priced. This was the case in all the bars we visited. A large wine and and a pint was only £7 or less in some bars. The main disappointment of our stay is the parking situation in Richmond. You can only park with a provided parking permit for 2 hours at a time. This basically means you can't go for a walk anywhere as you've got to be back to move your car. It really had a massive impact on our stay. We won't return to Richmond for this reason as we couldn't relax and we were constantly checking our watches to make sure we still had time left on our parking. The local council really need to sort this out.

Stayed at the Castle Tavern for one night, the staff we welcoming and very friendly. The room was clean and comfortable. The breakfast was as good a full English as I've had.

We just caught the end of food service and the barmaid was very accommodating and encouraged us to order our food. The food was hearty and worthy of any traditional English pub (I had scampi & chips, my partner had toad in the hole). The fire was on and there was a good atmosphere. We tried a couple of pubs beforehand and they just felt very plastic and branded. Would go again!

Lovely traditional pub with high standard rooms, newly refurbished January and we really enjoyed our stay. Definitely a place to visit, even if just for the lush Sunday lunch.

We popped in on a Sunday to have a drink whilst visiting Richmond, nice seat by a real fire. Pub had a very local feel to it, like everyone knew each other, but still felt very welcome there. We didn't eat but looked a decent menu there.

We chose the Castle Tavern on a Sunday lunchtime as 3 out of our party of 6 were vegetarian and they were the only place we could find that catered for us.The pub had the feeling of a local and the atmosphere was friendly and relaxed. We had baguettes, scampi and vegetarian tart which was more like a flan and very nice, all of which came with nice chips and side salad. Good value pub food with friendly service.

Ordered a burger here, served in a 'gourmet' bun. In this case gourmet meant stale and solid. The burgers were luke warm, the chips barely even that.Complained, refund was given straight away with apologies from the staff.

Went there on a Sunday lunchtime with a group of friends only intending to have a few beers as we did not want a full meal as we had plans to eat in the evening, we saw that they did baguettes but did not expect to get them on a Sunday when most pubs only want to sell you a roast dinner but they were happy to do them for us and they were great also tried the three beers (real ale) and they were all good as well, the staff were very friendly and did not mind when we asked for the sparkler to be taken off the spout before pulling the beers, it does not look much from the out side but is well worth a visit

Very good Beer!! Menu limited but very good pub grub and their roast meal was extremely good value as well as good quality. They also did OAP meals which were amazing value! They are working hard to change the reputation of establishment. Friendly, helpful staff. Traditionally decorated pub.

Served beer brewed in Richmond. Didn't eat here but menu looked like standard pub grub, very cheap prices. Would say of all pubs this had best beers in Richmond.

This was our first visit to richmond and as it happened a day when we wanted to watch a televised football game and have a drink and lunch. This pub came up with the answer to all our needs and did extremely well. We would call again and recommend the place for well cooked standard pub food and good beer at reasonable prices. well done.

This is my husbands local , but it has just had new owners. More Real Ales and Ciders to choose from, and a more home cooked style Menu. ie Burgers made from ground beef, freshly cooked salmon... Pricewise , very competitive to the other pubs in the area. Good atmosphere, friendly people

Good, basic B&B, conveniently situated in the market square. We were meeting up with friends who were doing the coast to coast walk (and were staying elsewhere). We met up here before going to La Piazza 2 (excellent) for our meal. By the time we returned they had run out of beer! In the absence of their normal Friday night live music, we had our own sing-song before retiring. In the morning, in spite of some overnight plumbing problems, we were provided with a reasonable breakfast to see us on our way, walking to Catterick with our friends.

This place was awful. A total disappointment. We had a great family day out in Richmond yesterday; only bad thing was this place. It was actually recommended by the cafe across the road which was too busy to accommodate us at the time. Perhaps their idea of a joke. So in we went expecting some decent grub in an old school pub. Everything was flawed, from the customer service to the quality of drinks and food. Diet coke from a big plastic bottle: lame. Surely any decent pub should have soft drinks on tap, not dishing it out of 2litre bottle like at a children's party. Asked for a ploughmans lunch: can't do it as no cheese today. So I got a chicken, bacon & mayo sandwich. My god it was awful. Severe lack of chicken, limp uncooked fatty bacon and excessive cheap Mayo all slapped into some white bread. Served with anaemic chips and a limp side salad. Kiddies chicken nuggets: can't do it today, the freezer is broke. Could do a kiddies burger though (must keep them in fridge!!). The wife had a sandwich and chips which was also rubbish. Was meant to have Brie in it but it was missing. Though we should have known: no cheese today!!The food took 30mins to prepare which would've been totally fine if it was half decent. The pub doesn't accept any card payments. What pub's these days don't accept cards?! Luckily the wife had cash on her. The waitress who brought the food when asked if she could bring ketchup said she didn't know if they had any ketchup left!! The staff there although nice enough lacked basic customer service skills and seemed like they didn't care and simply didn't want to be there. Avoid this place in my humble opinion.

No beer AND no food. The excuse was that they had been drunk out over the weekend but this was a Tuesday evening. The words piss up and brewery come to mind. AVOID. There are plenty better in Richmond which certainly isn't sort of pubs

The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .
