Called in for a light lunch. We sat outside to take in the lovely views, as the weather was lovely. We chose baguettes, cheese and chutney and prawn with marierose sauce. Well presented with a green side salad and skin on fries. Well filled baguettes. With a couple of cokes, £21 Good value.

We had our Family Festival Meal (for 6) at the Wherry Hotel one afternoon last week. We had booked it several weeks ago. We were disappointed with the Carvery course when we had a Festive Meal here last year, but we had no complaints this year. The Starter and Dessert courses were brought to our table, but we had to go up to the Carvery. This year there was a good selection of hot vegetables which were replenished when the levels got lower, and the temperature of the meals were seen to be regularly checked by the chefs. One VERY minor complaint with the Dessert was that it was listed (and ordered) as being a LEMON Cheesecake, but it was in fact a LIME Cheesecake. This did not matter to us, but it could have done to someone else. The change was not mentioned to us at any time. However. full larks for the meal and the service provided by the Staff.

These guys have definitely lost the plot for catering! We’ve had two meals, two weeks apart, thinking the the first poor dinner might be a fluke, but the second meal was even worse! Several poorly kept and cold vegetables. Dirty and slovenly kept counter top with even a cold sausage laying between the dishes. Parsnip slices cut so small that they were burnt or overcooked. The meat remnants were muddled and in short supply with one last slice of turkey served but nothing to replace the missing specimen. The gravy tureen was empty. Roast potato dish was empty. The broccoli was dry and over done but clearly left for far too long under the warming lights. To make matters worse, freshly cooked broccoli was simply tipped on top of the old dry specimen rather than removing the old. Absolutely appalling. A definite need to have a strong management person to oversee this fiasco as nobody around to cut and serve meat. It seems that most of the serving staff were busy chatting in the kitchen as plenty of laughter could be heard emanating from the kitchen area. My wife is a coeliac (Gluten free), she enquired about the green cheesecake desserts and if they might be GF. But was told that the two centrally place dishes were not for general sale as they were weekend specials and not for a Friday evening consumption. We were not even told if they were GF or not. The question is; why were these even displayed if they were not for sale? A real shame that I didn’t take pictures to support this appalling experience. We have been fairly regular costumers over the years, but we will not be revisiting for the foreseeable future. A great shame but clearly a case of very poor management I’m afraid.

We both had the carvery and enjoyed it. The price was fair (including dessert). Good choice of drinks at the bar. The carvery had a choice of four meats, lots of vegetables and sides. We arrived shortly after midday so the food was hot and freshly cooked. We enjoyed every bite. There was a good choice of desserts and these were also enjoyed. We will come again.

Awful food the carvery was not good if you pay top price on a Sunday you want the meat and veg etc to be available. Food was bland , hard potatoes and parsnips. My son could not eat his so when asked if food was okay they said they would send over a manager. Anyway manager did not arrive so we collared him and he agreed to change meal but wasn't very helpful or pleasant. We had something off the bar menu but that wasn't great either. Lots of customers were complaining meals wasn't that great so unless they improve I think they will lose a lot of customers. We sat by carvery nicer staff than other side but they just didn't want to help you had to call them over not good!! Won't be going back in a hurry !

Paid £10 to Moor our boat. Bought meals for 3 that were all lukewarm. Burgers, salmon. Came back to give them a chance before we went back to our boat. They wouldn't serve on a Tuesday night if you were not a resident after 10.30pm. Apparently paying for a mooring does not make you a resident. The vegan cheese on the burgers did not melt at all. Not because of the chemical makeup of the cheese...but the burger was not hot enough. The place was empty at 10.30. No wonder. And too many staff just there to tell people to go away.

We decided to choose from the Light Bites Menu at Lunchtime. We had the Jacket Potato option, but the fillings were VERY disappointing. Mine was the Cheese, but there was hardly any of it! The other two of our party had different (Tuna and Prawn) but again this was skimped. Very little in the way of salad as well. We have had these items before at the Wherry, and have never been disappointed before. Perhaps we were just unfortunate this time, but we should have complained and sent them back at the time.

Visited today on the first day of the latest Covid-19 restrictions. As expected it was table service only for drinks and food. We expected a little bit of confusion and delay, but everything appeared to have been well thought out in advance. After checking in at the desk (and giving contact details) we were shown to a table by one of the waitresses. She took our order for drinks and brought these to our table. One of the waiters came later and took our food order. He brought the Carvery tickets to us and later escorted us to the Carvery. (This was to ensure that there was no queueing at the Carvery.) After choosing our Carvery meat the plate was passed along the counter and the various vegetable dishes (very varied) and sauces were selected as requested and then put onto the plate behind the counter area. We then carried these to our table. After we had eaten, the table was quickly cleared. We requested the Bill - which also contained the cost of the drinks. The payment was taken (by card in our case, although they will accept cash). You then have to exit though the Hotel Reception area and leave the completed Contact Details Form in a Box in the Reception.Considering they only had a short time to implemen the Table Service, it was well organised and ran smoothly. The Restaurant was getting very busy by the time we left, and people were having to queue outside. This is a very popular venue - and deserves to do well.

Visited here on Thursday 19th July with my family. We were a party of 7 and chose the carvery. We decided to give it another try after a bad meal there last year. We like to give places another go as everyone is entitled to a bad day. What a complete waste of money. The roast potatoes were not roast potatoes just a greasy mess. The peas were hard, the mash lumpy and the gravy, which is supposed to make a meal was just instant stuff with no flavour that completely reunited the taste of the meal. The service was terrible. Not once were we asked if the meal was ok and when the waitress came to clear the plates, we told her the meal was awful and thanked her for asking us (which she didn’t) all she said was oh and walked away. We all left our meals and will never eat here again. Appalling for the price and drinks are way overpriced too!!

The food in the restaurant is good. The breakfast was good a big selection and hot, but the carvery I found to only be warm but a big selection. I would eat there again but not stay in the hotel.

I've been going to the Wherry since I was a small boy, after the speedboat would finish on a Thursday night, the Cats were pulled out of the water there and my father and I would go across and see the boats and mingle with drivers, so this place has been part of my whole life..We had left Lowestoft but we have returned to live here. We went to to the Wherry for a family meal to celebrate a significant birthday. The car park was busy but not full, I've not been inside the main bar for quite a while and its a really nice place to be.. nice sofas and seating areas for pre or post dining or just general socializing..Impressed so far.. we waited here for the rest of our part to arrived and we told we were going ' downstairs' for carvery as we had a large group (13) .. When we were ready we went to down to the Brown Boat Suite for our meal.. This room was refurbed last year I believe and they have done a super job.. Nice and airy, clean and quite classy really.. with some nice lighting .. One thing struck me was the atmosphere.. very chilled and all the other diners seemed the same way.. chilled and happy. It's a big room and they haven't rammed it full of tables giving everyone loads of room to walk around... The other diners seemed similar to us, family gatherings for an occasion and the like.. the staff were in keeping, chilled, very pleasant and efficient.. The young chef who was serving was very chatty.. Very nice food, not over cooked or soggy I had turkey that wasn't dry and decent portions .. Good service from the ladies in the bar and plate clearing.. we stayed quite a long time coffees etc .. no feeling of the staff wanting to move us on. We left walking through the main bar area.. It was busy there, not in bad way but there was good hubub.. markedly different to the Brown Boat.. We had a lovely time.

Went here for Sunday lunch as usual place was full. Meal was terrible, cold, slimy turkery, grissly pork, cold veg and undercooked potatoes. Asked to speak to manager and politely said I wasn't happy with my meal and was told there's nothing wrong with it. Questioned the hard undercooked potatoes and was told it was the type of potato they use and these potatoes couldn't be browned!!!! My husband is a head chef and there and said this was ridiculous. Asked for my money back and was told again there was nothing wrong with the meal. The customer service was disgusting! I asked to speak to someone here to avoid having to do this but that was avwaste of my time.Don't touch this place with a very long barge pole.

Four of us ate here last night. The bar was hectic when we arrived but the staff were good and we were served really fast.....and asked which brand of gin we wanted. We had booked a table, which seemed a good move on my part. We know you need to go to the bar to order and pay. The same for wine, you are given the bottle and glasses to take back to your table. Two opted for the carvery, which they said was very good. Two of us had fish. One fish pie and one salmon. Here I feel was the let down. We both said the vegetables were luke warm, the fish pie had lots of mash and not a lot of fish. The salmon was cooked fine but the presentation made it look really unappetising and the sauce was congealed rather than glossy. I am sure we will go back, as we were meeting friends and staying in the hotel. Maybe next time I will opt for salad and burger !!

Visited with a party of 7 lady friends in the evening. Service very slow for drinks and being seated and even slower waiting for our meals. Food only just OK, some meals looked very dry and I don't think any of us particularly enjoyed them though I must admit nobody had the carvery. Will not be visiting again!

I am in no way posh privileged or one who usually complains however the experience i have just had is not good at all! Me and my partner just went for a meal here and it was one of the worst i have ever had the displeasure of eating, i didnt send my meal back as im not one for complaining as i work in kitchens. I ordered the castle double stacked burger and it was over cooked dry ( clearly frozen ) and i think it was pre cooked and reheated, literally like chewing a golf ball! The chips were soggy and oily and my burger contained one onion ring when stated that the meal contains onion RINGS! At £14 i would think they are taking the PMy partner ordered the fish and chips and the fish had clearly stuck to the fryer basket and the batter broke off so rather than make a fresh one the chef had tried to hide it by turning it over on the skin side up, she noticed of course as half of the batter on one side was missing lol not very professional, she asks a waitress to help and to correct it, the waitress looks as if she doesnt give a monkeys and tells her to wait a minute while she serves another table, twice she passed us too interested in rushing about than to help or even get someone who can, finally it goes back to the kitchen, it comes out fresh, but the batter is now soggy the chips and beans she had with it had also been sitting under the hot lamps the whole while, so now the chips are soggy and the beans crusty! I wish i was one for complaining personally as im appalled with the whole experience but thought this is the next best thing! Lack of effort and no passion for what they are doing Only saving grace was the nice view!!!!!! Wont be back

We were staying locally and had visited the carvery several years ago on several occasions and had enjoyed the food then. We went on a Thursday at around 6pm. Were served quickly at the bar. Plenty of tables available and we didn't have to queue for the carvery. We both had beef which was juicy and well flavoured. The turkey was also delicious. Veg was varied and well cooked. It did get busier as we were eating so best to dine early. The restaurant would suit all ages. £8.99 a head in the week but more at weekends. Will return in the future!

This was suggested by my wife's elderly aunt, whom we were visiting, as a place to take her for lunch. It is certainly in a lovely location and we were lucky enough to secure a table by the window to take advantage of the view over the water. My wife and her aunt only wanted jacket potatoes with prawns but I noticed that the menu contained proper steak and kidney suet pudding; something you don't see in many places these days. So I went to the bar, mouth watering, to order, and was told that they didn't have any, at only just after midday! Very disappointing. I settled for the steak and ale pie instead. I also waited quite a while at the bar before somebody actually decided to take my order. So, the food. My wife and aunt thought that the jacket potato fillings of prawns were a little dry, and they needed mayonnaise to bolster the marie rose sauce. My steak pie wasn't bad but, as it was served with vegetables and a nice gravy, why serve chips with it? It would have been much better with some new potatoes, or even some mash. All in all, I don't think that I would return.

We decided to try the Castle Carvery ay the Wherry Hotel on Easter Sunday as a pre-Birthday meal for my wife, sharing the meal with her sister and brother-in-law. I rang ahead to see if we needed to book a table but was told they don't take bookings on Sundays but there should be no problem getting a table, which there wasn't, indeed it was pretty quiet and we grabbed a scenic table by the window. You order drinks and the carvery at the bar (payment in advance) with a choice of one-course or two courses. Sunday is more expensive than the rest of the week (approx. £3 more per head) so eating on a Sunday isn't the best value option, but at £9.99 for one course or £13.98 for two courses it wasn't too bad. Desserts are ordered at your table (served by very friendly waiting staff) so the eating experience is a mix of self-service (for the carvery) and waited service for subsequent drinks and desserts. As such it was unclear whether a tip was expected but I left a small gesture of thanks on the table when we left. The meat was tasty and lean although you only got a choice of two of the four meats available and only one slice of each. There was also a pie option but you couldn't have pie and meat...it was one or the other. The vegetable selection was plentiful and all plates were maintained nice and hot...one of my pet hates is luke warm food, but I had no complaints with the food here.Overall we had a lovely meal and the restaurant offers some lovely views of the Oulton Broad (we saw the sun set while eating, which was lovely) and I would happily return for more but on a weekday when the meals were cheaper.
