Castle Carvery Racecourse in Norwich

The welcome at the bar was great and we didn’t wait too long for our name to be called to go through to the carvery. It was okay- average I would say. The queue was massive and the area around the food was messy (the half of the carvery not being used). The beef was far too chewy and fatty. At no point were we asked if meal was okay or offered any deserts. Staff in restaurant not attentive or friendly I’m afraid to say. Given how long the queue was I felt they should have opened up both sections of the carvery as queued for not far off ten minutes to get to the food. As I sit eating my home cooked roast beef right now we commented how it didn’t cost us £63 (with 3 soft drinks a pint of cider) and far nicer. We used to be regulars until Covid and unfortunately it isn’t at the standard it used to be and certainly not the standard it was when Richardsons owned it. If Toby’s Carvery came to Norwich I think castle would need to up their game massively. Wouldn’t return

We booked the racecourse castle carvery for my daughters first birthday 🥳 the staff are so friendly and helpful and made planning such a big meal for a group of 40 a breeze. we some of us had the carvery and others orders from the main menu there was such a good selection of choices and the carvery had Yorkshire puddings as big as my daughter head everything was cooked to perfection the chefs definitely know what they are doing The service was amazing with staff being so helpful to help us put up and take down decorations and the kids enjoyed playing in the large indoor/outdoor play area We can not speak highly enough of this venue and we are so glad we chose it to host our baby girls birthday 🥳 Will definitely be back

We booked a family meal for 13 people weeks in advance, only to arrive and be told there was no record of our reservation. (Although I was able to pull up the confirmation email on my phone). While they did manage to find us a table, we quickly regretted the fact that they had. The entire meal was a let-down from start to finish, and not a single person in our group finished the "food" on their plate. The service from the bar when ordering food and drinks was painfully slow, with only two people working the bar. It was almost 45 minutes from us arriving to all having a drink and either our carvery tickets or food orders placed. The carvery was poorly staffed, with the person serving being totally unfamiliar with the meats he was serving. They mistook roast pork for gammon, but were adamant that the pork was gammon, even though it was most certainly roast pork. The roast beef looked good, it was even a little pink, but disappointingly it was full of fat and gristle, making it nearly inedible. The turkey was dry, and the Yorkshire puddings were flat and entirely tasteless, certainly not light and fluffy. We had two young children in our group that wanted to play in the soft play area, when taken through by one of our group, they were told by the staff member that she wasn't even old enough to be supervising the kids alone as she wasn't 18 yet, and there were around 15 youngsters in the play area at the time. I didn't visit the play area myself, and there may well be a sign notifying parents that they are to supervise their children at all times, but still thought this was still worth a mention. Overall, the meal was terrible, we left hungry and frustrated, its no wonder these places charge before you eat, as we wouldn't have paid afterwards that's for sure! We won't be returning, and we suggest you look elsewhere for a family dining experience that’s actually enjoyable.

Went on a Sunday very busy but got seated in 10 minutes both had the carvery and dessert Beef was tender and tasty Good choice of fresh vegetables Desserts were delicious. Staff members were very nice and helpful. Very clean and very good value for money. First visit for us but won’t be the last.

Lovely time with loved ones. Not such a great hospitality service only one waiter came to the table for a dessert order the whole time of us being there. Had to keep going up to the bar to order meals and drinks. Dessert was lovely however the main course of Carvery was a little and lot to be desired. The carver was abrupt during service and the meal itself was Luke warm at best I understand it’s busy and your trying to rush your service to serve everyone so there not waiting however the quality of food shouldn’t suffer because of it.

We came out for a birthday lunchtime carvery never again!! The staff looked fed up even though they had only just opened Staff clothing looked dirty The restaurant looks dirty and needs a major overhaul The knife and fork were dirty we had to get some more that looked slightly cleaner, plates weren’t much better so definitely need to invest in a decent dishwasher The salt and pepper were empty staff never came to fill up again we had to go to another table and do it ourselves The food was awful and tasted reheated It was very expensive compared to other places that were far better I certainly wouldn’t come again.

Went to the racecourse for a family meal on Sunday 21st and have to say the food was very average. The meats were nice but the veg was awful and cheap especially the roast potatoes, they tasted and felt like rubber. Not impressed compared to a month ago when we last visited

Visited the castle carvery with family today. Nothing as good as when it was previously owned before the Red Cat Co took it over. Service was terrible at the point of ordering there were 4 of waiting and no staff to be found any where. Food was ok but other carvery places leave it standing. Children were running around everywhere while you’re trying eat and chat with family we saw one elderly lady almost got knocked over by children running around near the carvery. Staff pretty rubbish need to trained better, in their appearance and speaking manner.That said I think it was the manager who cleared our table and he looked and was extremely professional.

booked by phone on our way home from Yarmouth, giving them 30mins notice. Megan greeted us and was just so welcoming. all the staff were very helpful, nothing too much trouble. we had 2 children, 2 toddlers in highchairs and 4 adults. the kids could play in their park. the increddible mess the babies made was no bother to the staff [even when a drink was tipped over - they ran to help mop it up and replaced it!] we had carvery and food off the menu children eat main meal free. we spent £117 for our party of 8 which included soft drinks. lots of items on the full GF menu and plenty vegan/dairy free too including icecream!

While visiting the restaurant for a family meal, my two nephew's explored the children's outdoor play area. I was shocked to see several large holes in the soft flooring near the metal play equipment and was wary of the children running around near them as it was an accident waiting to happen. Unfortunately my youngest nephew (2 and a half) was knocked over by another child who had tripped on a large hole while he was running. The two boys collided head on, and my nephew sustained a significantly large egg on his head, which shocked others as we walked through the restaurant. While accidents happen, we can't help but feel this could have been avoided if the surfaces outside were not unsafe. To make matters worse, when askinging for support from a first aider and an ice pack, a member of staff took time in getting cubes of ice covered in blue roll. As my nephew is a young child, a wet/slimy tissue covered ice (pack?!) was not suitable and was not appropriate in helping his injury. To say we were shocked by the first aid procedure at the establishment was an understatement and we quickly left to use a proper first aid kit in one of our cars. We are appalled that such procedures are lacking, especially in an establishment which caters to children and families (with indoor and outdoor play provisions).

Best carvery in Norwich! Friendly staff and the play area is great for the kids. Will definitely be visiting here again in future

THE WAY THE MALE MANAGER SPEAKS TO HIS YOUNG STAFF IS DISGUSTING!!!! just had a meal here although the food was nice I was disgusted at the attitude of the boss and the way he was speaking to the young girls! Talk about slave labour… hire a load of 17/18 year old who are paid peanuts and speak to them like crap! You should be disgusted with yourself. Caitlin (one of the girls also being spoken to like crap) was lovely and polite and doing her best to get her job done! But I hope she realises at such a young age that’s now how an employer should speak to a staff member. No wonder the place is staffed with young kids as no adult would take that

My husband and I had Sunday lunch here today. Not good . I had roast beef and my husband had the turkey. The beef and turkey were really nice and we got a good helping. Now for the veg: ...All the veg could have been hotter, all luke warm. The roasties tasted like they had been deep fried, not roasted. Not at all nice. The cauliflower cheese had loads of stalk in, not nice to bite into. The rest of the veg was nothing special. The gravy really left a lot to be desired, really thin and not a nice rich gravy. We certainly won't be going the Castle Carvery again.

Had a carvery there which was really OK great carvery for the price. Staff make you feel welcome from the time you walk in the front door.

Visited The Racecourse today for a family lunch. Staff were friendly no problems with their hospitality. We had to wait near bar area before being seated and whilst waiting couldn’t help noticing how dirty the carpet and chairs were! I know they get a lot of traffic but this was disgusting and in need of a shampooing. Once seated at the table, the table was covered in grease, the glasses were misty a felt dirty. The potatoes were like cardboard and tasted foul, peas all dried up, carrots undercooked. Plate size has been reduced to what used to be used as the children’s plates. The meats looked nice but we didn’t have any as one of the chefs wiped sweat from his brow then carved the meat 😷 We was thoroughly disappointed and won’t be returning to their franchise.

Totally manic, kids running around everywhere, worst carvery I have had in a long while couldn't wait to get out of the restaurant

Doing laps of the city for 30 mins on a Sunday @ 330pm starving hungry thinking who does a carvery ! Ahh perfect for the kids with the play area ! .its been 20 years since I had been here ! So why not ….. literally paid soon as I got in the door 2 adult Carvery’s 2 kids with deserts and 2 alcoholic drinks Just short of £70 .00 Ended up cleaning my own table and getting my own cutlery, not a problem as busy ! Once feeding the homeless had sat down I made my way to the carvery section , got given a plate not much bigger than a side plate and went for a Slice of beef , yeah me and the chef clocked eyes as I was expecting him to carve another slice ! Roast potatoes bowl was empty , bar 6 giant spuds that looked like jacket potatoes ! ( would take the plate up ) Few vegetables to chose from , no stuffing ! No sausages or anything. The usual watered down horseradish , I made my way to the table seemed I had more roast potatoes stuck to my shoes than on my plate . I was the only one to eat as starving hungry and could wash it down with a beer while holding my nose . That’s the problem with these pay first places , they know it’s cr&p ! So get your money upfront . Never again not even in another 20 years .

Terrible food. Tasteless and bland. Appearance of the food was good, however this wasn't matched by the flavour. Service was also truly awful.

Used to eat here regularly but it's gone really downhill. Hubby had carvery, roast potatoes weren't cooked properly as they were hard. Couldn't believe it when I looked at his plate and there were lumps of gravy over it. When manager? came over to ask if everything was okay, we did tell and show him, he just muttered something and went off. From where I was sitting I saw him sticking a fork in the tray of potatoes then he changed the gravy container. We've never eaten anywhere where there has been lumps in the gravy. My gammon steak was chewy and the mushrooms with it were dripping with oil. We won't be eating here again.

Had 35 people for 80th birthday all staff were really friendly and nothing was too much trouble, despite being busy with lots of birthday parties, brilliant food and great service, top marks !

Seven of us went to celebrate a birthday. Two had burger meals and were very happy with their choice. Five of us had the carvery. All of us were disappointed with our meal. The roast potatoes were dry and hard inside and the vegetables choices available could have been better. The meals got cold very quickly. I can’t see us coming back in the near future.

Found this online, went to try their food. Food was very nice and reasonable prices. Next time I'm near I'll be stopping in again.

Having read some rather negative reviews, we were delighted with the lovely carvery which we enjoyed today. We couldn’t fault our experience. The food was very good (especially the sticky toffee pudding) and the service was friendly and efficient.

Considering many people eat vast amounts at this place, charging us £3.00 each for our twin boys to have a bowl is a disgrace. I complained to the company but have been totally ignored as they clearly don't care. The food is average at best. It is what it is, pile your plate and stuff frozen veg into your mouth. They've also got really skimpy with the meat portions. We haven't been back since so they've lost our custom. We went occasionally when I couldn't be bothered to cook. The cost really adds up too, when you go as a family.

Pre booked a carvery with family. Queues exiting the building just to enter! You can't order a childs meal that is not having carvery until you have been seated so delayed everyone in getting the carvery whilst waiting for said childs food. Condiments are poorly marked, by which i mean not at all!!! one relative covered his food in what looked like bread sauce, only to find it was horseradish! Then battled the queues to exit the building after. Staff over run. Being served at the bar to order childs meal, lady apologised and said she had to answer the phone, i told her to go ahead and do so, only for a male member, looked like the manager to come over and shout at her infront of customers for doing so!

I hadn’t been to Racecourse in a while following a couple of poor visits in February. My family & I used to visit once or twice a week and always throughly enjoyed it. The food was always good and professional friendly service. We decided to give it another go as it’s our local and we can walk. We were all excited to go. It was apparent as soon as got to the front door this place is under poor management that do not care about the state of the building. It is being milked for every penny. The staff are glum and disinterested. The food is bland and dry, that’s if it is even available. The bar is tired and needs a revamp. The place is dirty. It’s just sad what it has become. So much wasted potential.

Last time I visited it was lovely....2 years ago. HOWEVER in my most recent visit with my partner we received food that was very disappointing in comparison to such high hopes we had What we received was completely unacceptable and not at all up to par with what’s expected of a carvery: -one burnt parsnip and one majorly undercooked parsnip-Rock solid Yorkshire puddings-Stuffing that tasted like washing up liquid - disgusting -Cocktail sausages in place of proper ones-Soggy carrots-apple sauces tasted like water and chunks of apple- very dry Turkey and beef -the ‘supersize’ was the exact same size as the standard just on a slightly larger plate.This was the just the food. Whilst waiting ,a member of staff was at the bar talking to someone in an unbothered obnoxious manner with what we heard to be anything but kind in regards of another staff member.After we paid the server asked how our food was and when mentioned the poor food the staff member laughed before returning asking why and apologised saying she will let the kitchen know. We was greeted very well by the young lad on the door and service was quick however the quality thereafter was poor. Just used the receipt as proof of visit and Covered up the servers name as we don’t want to ‘name n’shame’ anyone.

This was an incredibly disappointing experience, was my first meal out since we come out of lock down and was really looking forward to it! From the moment we arrived to when we left it was awful. Started with being ignored when we came in for ages, was finally shown to a table and waited for a long time for menus. We ordered 3 different plates of food in my party of 3 and all 3 were disgusting, poor Quality, poorly cooked and cold, wasn’t expecting anything that was out of this world but was hoping for a half decent meal and it wasn’t even that. And while I was there I witnessed the restaurant manager being really rude to another customer that was sitting with her family at a table near us. I was close enough to hear that they wasn’t happy with their food as well, and when this was pointed out the manager just talked over the Lady and sounded as if he was somehow blaming her for something.... unbelievable response from a restaurant manager! Will not be going back here again, avoid at all costs.... wish I’d stayed home and had a Jam sandwich!!!

There was no access to front door, no signage for covid advising customers where to go so went in play area doors to access the restaurant. We had fish and chips and there were stone cold peas in with the hot ones. Steak was not cooked properly. We sat near the carvery and people food were out waiting collection for 5+ minutes. I made a complaint to the staff member who didnt even apologise just said' I can get my manage' advised the manager and had to explain my story again they couldnt be bothered to relay the complaint. Then the manager said it's my fault that the service was bad, because I took a seat without waiting for over 5 minutes as I was ignored by three staff, and then I asked why the 3 people who we walk past didnt stop us and the manager advised they would not have been aware which clearly means that staff ate not vigilant in the covid practice.. he was arguing with me trying to put it on me that I was in the wrong despite this being the first time I have been out since covid was not aware of the procedure in place. He raised his voice, would not answer my questions and I felt unsafe during covid at the thought that I could just walk in and no member of staff would acknowledge I was there and I was allowed to enter the restaurant waking past 3 further people who had not challenged us. Disgusting!

I went in for a carvery lunch time today. It was delicious nice and hot well plated, happy staff well done I'll be back.

Had a carvery here with family last Sunday, what a total disappointment We decided on a large plate carvery but why did we bother.They now fill your plate for you whereas before they put your meat on, then you supervised the staff to fill your plate with the veg you wanted and how much gravy.When our plates arrived the meat on the plate was good but why scrimp on the vegetables. I asked for Cabbage, Beans, and Mash also Yorkshire’s, the cabbage you could have fitted on a desert spoon, struggled to find the beans and mash about enough to feed a small child. The Yorkshire’s cold and tasted of cardboard.I know these are difficult times but if you are paying the prices they are charging you expect to go home full not hungry.Finally the staff, apart from the nice lady on the door who was welcoming. The rest could really not be bothered and avoided eye contact in case you asked for anything, probably if you asked for more veg.

Had another good meal here. Although it is a carvery, there is a menu to fill in and the meal and drinks are brought to the table. We left there feeling full!

Went to racecourse lunchtime today for a carvery .my brother was about to eat last mouthfull when saw a small piece of plastic looked like it came of utensil for dishing up mentioned to waitress was pleasant. She went to kitchen to tell chef and manager expected an apology but nothing. Very bad not happy

Paid £14 for a carvery today ,staff filled the plate , and wouldn’t wouldn’t fill a hamster !!!..had to go home and have a pizza ,I understand problems with COVID, but assume the extra price for meal would cover it ?? but for gods sake fill the plate up ,It’s only veg ,won’t be going again !!!

Fui a un asador hoy, la comida y el servicio fue encantador, tenían consejos covid bajo control. Estaba sentado subió para carvery que estaba muy bien plateado. Una cosa estropeó la cantidad de niños corriendo arriba y abajo del restaurante. Sé que es la hora ocupada de agosto alrededor de la 1 pm. Pero el personal puede pedir a los padres que mantengan a los niños bajo control mientras la gente regresa del asador con comida caliente. O si no les gusta decir, pongan un aviso cortés en la mesa para la seguridad de los niños. Podías sentir la vibración en el suelo mientras los niños gritaban como truenos.

Donde empezar. Esta noche he tenido una de las peores comidas que he comido, yo misma soy la mesera y creo que este es uno de los peores servicios que he recibido en mi vida, la gerencia apenas parecía molesta porque había muchos problemas con nuestra comida. En primer lugar, nuestro boleto ni siquiera fue llevado a la cocina después de que yo preguntara dónde estaban nuestros entrantes después de 45 minutos de estar sentados y esperando, donde en ese tiempo nadie se dio cuenta de que no habíamos recibido nada. Nuestros platos principales luego salieron incorrectos. Mi hermana, que es alérgica a los lácteos, pidió una hamburguesa sin lácteos, la principal salió con queso por dentro y ensalada de col. ¡Esto se logró "rehacer" en menos de 5 minutos! Mi hamburguesa también salió incorrecta, ninguno de los cambios se tuvo en cuenta. Como si esto no fuera lo suficientemente malo, mi papá encontró un trozo de plástico en su curry, nuevamente la gerencia no pareció molestarse. Un miembro del personal llevaba una máscara, sin embargo, cada vez que se acercaba a la mesa para hablar, ¡se la quitaba! A ella no le importaba menos que estuviéramos teniendo problemas importantes. Solo recibí la mitad de un reembolso, me ofrecieron postres de cortesía, pero solo quería irme en este punto, lo cual hicimos, dejando toda nuestra comida atrás. Solo diré que los asadores fueron encantadores, ¡y la dama rubia que nos sirvió la segunda vez fue brillante! ! Como dije, yo mismo soy camarera y odio que me traten así cuando trabajo, pero no era aceptable y definitivamente no volveré en el futuro.

Higienizado a la llegada. Y detalles tomados. Mostrado a la mesa. Todos los servidores con máscaras. Carvery fue muy organizado. Servidor cortó carne y le sirvió verduras. No era 'tacaño' con las verduras. Deliciosa comida. Sin problemas. El servidor preguntó sobre el pudín, de nuevo sin problemas. En general, muy organizado y sin duda volvería a visitar.
