We had a family meal here to celebrate a birthday on a Sunday. The grounds and building are impressive, and in a quiet location. We opted for variations of the Sunday roast for a three course meal. The starters and main courses were good sized large portions (something that was unexpected yet welcomed, especially when lots places skimp on portion sizes). All courses were tasty and enjoyable. Also, it was nice to have a short walk around the grounds after our meal, in order to walk off some of the food! The service was ok, but could have been a little slicker. Although nothing that would put us off visiting again. Well worth a visit.

We went for afternoon tea and the customer service was below average. The receptionist was on her phone texting away when we approached the reception desk. The waiter couldn’t find our reservation. Eventually when he did he gave us a choice of where to sit in the dining room area. We sat by the window which was full of cobwebs dead flies and spiders. An old tablecloth was left on the window sill which had been previously used and forgotten about by my chair. I asked the waiter to remove it. He served us coffee from a dirty Coffee pot and the spoons were filthy and not cleaned. The place is very dated and in need of maintenance, the windows were filthy, pains could do with a lick of paint and the carpet was filthy. On close inspection, there are cobwebs everywhere. The waiter on presenting the afternoon tea did not describe the selection of sandwiches and cakes being served. The customer service was well below standard so we left without finishing the cakes. The sandwiches were average. UNFORTUNATELY, I would not recommend afternoon tea here. Not valued for the amount paid.

we visited for the advertised Fathers Day lunch. Loved the place. Could not fault it. We were disappointed with the food, however. We both opted for the Roast beef dinner. The beef was carved unevenly and some was cut too thick to cut with my knife. Needed a good steak knife. The Yorkshire pudding looked impressive but there was nothing to it. Just air is a hard crust. The vegetables were uninspiring. No greens, only root veg. We had to ask twice for some mustard. Duriing our meal we were asked by two different waitresses how our meal was, but they both gave a brief "sorry" and no action was taken. The dessert was delicious. When the bill came the waitress said that for two courses each the total was £49.50. However. I realised, after paying, that we had been charged for three courses. I complained to the manager, who gave me a refund. I was left feeling that the staff didn't really care. Very poor customer service.

Brought friend here for afternoon tea for her 70th birthday. Service ok, tea and coffee refills, sandwiches passable. Then ewe got to the scones, they were rock hard. We were laughing as we could not cut them in half, we tried stabbing them with a knife, but there was no way they could be cut as they were so stale, we called our server over who went and fetched us 2 soft warm fresh ones. Will never come here again for afternoon tea

Poor selection of cakes all sponge cakes, nothing else. Having heard all about the amazing cakes and selection form a friend who had visited the very same place 2 weeks previously we were very disappointed by what we received.. The milk jug was filthy stained with old tea and old dried milk. A fresh one was given once we pointed this out. The room was beautiful however the atmosphere was ruined by the radio, smooth radio is not what you expect to be playing whilst having afternoon tea in beautiful settings. When we expressed our concerns we were not given an explanation and just given a card with managers name on it and told to speak with her. No apology. On a sunny afternoon my girlfriend and I decided to visit the castle for a walk around the gardens and a drink and some food. The castle itself and gardens are absolutely stunning. The staff however are a different story. After arriving and asking the receptionist if we could stop for afternoon tea, we were told "no you need to book in advance because of the scones". I personally am not a chef and if I'm honest struggle not burning a pizza so if somebody tells me scones take time and can't be preprepared then fair enough, I can accept that. What I can not accept is the dirty looks the receptionist gave my girlfriend and I. We were not told that we could go to the bar for drinks or that another menu is available, without scones. It was clear from the start that she wanted us to leave. After a girl behind the bar took pity on us and assisted us in finding a seat we got followed by members of staff to the toilets and even to the bar. A very strange experience in deed. Something I could maybe understand if my girlfriend and I were hooded youths looking like we were trying to steal something? We felt very disrespected and for any staff to be that rude is from a hospitality point of view a nightmare. Such a shame as the castle itself is gorgeous.

The bread on the outside was beginning to 'curl', the middle sandwich slices were a bit softer so we tried to eat them first! The cut fruit (mainly strawberries) on the cakes had dried out... so we didn't eat any fruit! The best bit was the scones and thick cream with jam, although I am suspicious they too had been left uncovered. The atmosphere was how you made it, as there was very little! The building smelt musty, but as we were just having 'tea' we could not see any further than the 'tea' room.I hope this was a 'one off' experience as I am unlikely to recommend it to anyone else..Such a shame....

We had a very nice meal, served in a beautiful historic panelled room. The restaurant is nicely laid out and tables are well presented with table cloths.Service is both friendly and professional. We had a goats cheese and beetroot starter with tomatoes, this was very nice indeed. For mains we both had a Herbed polenta dish served with an assortment of interesting vegetables and tomato sauce. This dish was also very nice and well presented. All in all, this was a very nice evening and I look forward to returning soon.

After a bad experience with the service here when considering it as a wedding venue we decided to give it a try for lunch as it is on our doorstep. Unfortunately I am unable to change my first impression of the place. It's such a shame as it is a beautiful building with so much potential. We went there for lunch on a Saturday, 2 adults and a 2 year old. The place was empty which I thought may not be a good sign. Anyway, the lunch menu looked nice, we decided what we wanted then waited at least another 10 minutes before anyone came to take our order. I explained my daughter had a dairy allergy and checked that something off the lunch menu was ok, he said it was but 5 minutes later came back with a childrens menu for me to choose from , I thought it was strange that I wasn't given this in the first place as I had told them we would all be eating. The waiter then came back again to tell my husband what he had ordered was not available so he chose something else. When the food eventually arrived, my daughters was fine, but I had ordered potato skins and they brought the wrong filling, it was very bland and dry and definitely not worth the money. I cannot recall what my husband ordered but he had the same complaint as me, bland and dry. After a disappointing meal we then waited and waited for the bill (there were still not other customers) after about 15 minutes my husband went up to the bar and paid.I'm sad to say that we will not be going back there.

I've been putting this off, I hate being negative especially to such a much needed, historic local venue. Perhaps a mid week visit to the restaurant wasn't such a good idea but an anniversary is an anniversary. Anyway I will try to be objective. Castle Bromwich Hall is a valuable asset to the area but I felt disappointed that the history of the grand old building did not play a part in the presentation. I would have liked to see some potted histories in the lounge, maybe some old photos/paintings around the place of the hall in all its splendour, some things to remind the clientele that this building commands respect and has a story to tell, that it's far above the run of the mill eatery.Eatery, back to the point: The service; I could not complain about the service, our waiter Alex was very attentive and efficient; The menu was very limited (mid-week syndrome?)The food, salmon & crayfish starter, lamb main, although well cooked, prepared and presented left me thinking of that old adage "We thank the Lord for what we had if there had of been ____ we would have been glad" But the cheeseboard was excellent both in content and value; The atmosphere/ambience was poor, the open fire may have helped had it been lit and background music courtesy of Radio Two did not set the scene; The cost was not more than I expected to pay but in the circumstances I did feel disappointed.Disappointed, I suppose that sums it up. But please don't get me wrong I shall be going back. I've read the reviews for Mothers day and they have cheered me up. Next time I will pick my time....maybe Sunday lunch or another such special occasion. It appears that CBH is a popular wedding venue and I wish it prosperity. We need places of this ilk.

Jamie was excellent and nothing was too much trouble but unfortunately the service and friendliness of the other waiting staff left a lot to be desired :) Appreciate they were very busy which has could be remedied by management employing more staff to cover such occasions. On the whole a very enjoyable experience - would revisit at a less busy time.

This charming old country house hotel was a real "find", in the old village of Castle Bromwich but not that far from Spitfire Island or Birmingham city centre. Rather Downton Abbey in its atmosphere, with fantastic gardens. There were six of us for lunch plus a toddler so we were given the "Boudoir, a small dining room , all to ourselves. fantastic carved roses on the ceiling and a view of the ancient church from the window. The food was excellent with special little treats and bunches of flowers for the mums in our party. The waiter was very cheery -threw in a few jokes for the occasion.Had a chance to explore this gorgeous old house while chasing my little granddaughter around. There are two large dining rooms and a couple of smaller sitting rooms.. The house is being restored, as far as I could see to its former beauty.. this is still a work in progress but the atmosphere makes up for the odd scuff on the woodwork. It would be a great place for a wedding. We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch - and the step back into the past

We would just like to say that my first experience of Castle Bromwich Hall Restaurant was fabulous! We had a wonderful 3 course Sunday lunch in one of the drawing room restaurants to celebrate Mother's Day and all enjoyed it! The building has stunning architecture and a beautiful walled garden yet the interior has a modern feel with many of the historical features. The staff were friendly (especially a young chap called Jamie) and an all round relaxing day! We will be returning soon for afternoon tea which looked amazing! Highly recommend a visit.

We went for afternoon tea using a Travelzoo voucher. The dining room was very imposing with dark wooden panels lining the walls. We started the experience with a lovely glass of sparkling wine. The tea was good and kept hot in the teapot provided. We started off with a selection of finger sandwiches with various fillings such as salmon, ham, tuna and cheese. We followed this up with scones which were still still warm and accompanied by jam and cream. Then to finish there were four dainty cakes. The only thing we would have changed is to have one more sandwich and one less cake but a lovely afternoon.

The vegetarian choice was a huge pasty with a spoonful of vegetables inside and three tiny cubes of soya. The meat eaters had humongous lumps of meat with little gravy but the vegetables were a disgrace...mixed up over cooked vegetables and roast potatoes that had obviously been cooked hours ago. The best part was the mince pie because it had obviously been brought in . The coffee was instant! At £30.00 a head ......A Disgrace!.....and no intention of Santa so why Santa Sunday?

Was so looking forward to my Birthday treat and my first experience of afternoon tea. What a disappointment and such a let down. The exterior of the building is so impressive but such a shame the interior does not match up. It was a very cold dreary November afternoon and was hoping for a warm, cosy ambience, however the rooms felt cold and uninviting, no ambient lighting, flowers etc - there were two Christmas trees there completely bare of any decoration and the place felt like a morgue, even the staff were completely cold and devoid of any personality. The food appeared to be shelf bought and cut up into small portions not freshly prepared and lacking in any kind of presentation. Half way through our meal we had to find a member of staff and request our pots of tea as none had arrived. We also had to request jam for the scones. At no time did anyone ask if everything was to our liking and therefore a total lack of service. The only thing that made the experience enjoyable was the company I was with. Will not be returning.

My friend had booked an afternoon tea. Upon arrival I was immediately impressed with the look of the hotel - stunning looking building and grounds. Inside, also looked nice, despite the reception works. We went to the temporary reception, and told the staff we were there for afternoon tea, and were shown to the dining room (again a beautiful room). The waitress asked if we wanted tea or coffee and went off to get them. A short while later our tea arrived, initially we were quite impressed with how it was presented, however, we discovered there were only three vegetarian sandwiches out of 10 presented. (I am vegetarian, and unfortunately we were not asked by staff if there were any dietary requirements prior to the tea coming out). I asked for a couple of extra vegetarian sandwiches and a nice selection arrived a few minutes later. In order to get a top up of tea/coffee - I had to go into the bar area and ask!Once we had finished, we asked for the bill & found an extra £4.00 charge for 'open food' was added, when I queried this I was told it was because we had asked for more sandwiches, despite explaining that the reason I'd asked for more sandwiches was because there was only three out of 10 that I could eat, (which wasn't really acceptable), the receptionist just said oh right ok, I'll let the chef know and went back to her computer! We took this further and complained as we felt the service we received on the whole was very disappointing, and staff communication could have been a lot better!! We had a refund of the £4.00, however, both felt like the afternoon had been spoiled a little, which is a shame as the afternoon tea was nice otherwise.

The three adults also had prosecco and as my 11 year old niece was with us the member of staff serving us, without asking, made her a special fruit cocktail making her feel extremely special. Sandwiches were fresh and the cakes absolutely divine. Exceptionally good value at under £20 each. A lovely way to spend a Saturday afternoon in lovely surroundings. Brought as a treat for my mums bday, wish I'd have spent an extra £5 and taken a trip into bham city centre to Hotel La Tour where I would have guaranteed great service & good food. Walked into the hall to be advised by the receptionist to take a seat "anywhere ya like, someone will sort you out" so we sat in the dining room. Several mins later an older gentleman shouted to us across the room "have u just walked in off the street & sat yrselves down?" as you can imagine this was highly embarrassing! When our tea was eventually brought out the sandwiches were poor, it was literally two slices of bread cut into thin fingers btwn two of us. We were not advised what the sandwiches were so we guessed our way through. The cakes where 'plonked' down on the table in front of us, some where stale & had clotted cream smeared over in an attempt to moisten. At no point during our visit where we asked if everything was satisfactory or if we required anything else, in fact the bill was brought to our table before we had even finished?! We certainly would not be returning here in any capacity. Disappointing waste of money.

We live close to the Hall and have having been a handful of times seen an improvement so it was disappointing to see a return to the ways of old. These are the experiences we encountered after booking for their Christmas dinner in what should be fine dining situation:Bread rolls already on side plates before customers arrival - how long for we don't know. Surely these should be offered once you are seated?Paper napkinsThe waiter appeared to be in a rush for us to choose the wine, one of us hadn't even had chance to look at the wine list. One starter chosen by us did not state on the menu that the prawns and smoked salmon included a marie rose style sauce. Surely this is a main ingredient. Due to allergies this had to be returned. The waiter suggested a 'terrine' as an alternative, I suggested he brought a menu rather than suggesting one dish. Strangely enough, the menu offered was not the Christmas one.I stuck with the prawn and smoked salmon that also included a few small scraps of lettuce that were passed off as some kind of garnish - the brown, floppy piece unfortunately stood out. On mentioning this to the waiter his response was that he only served up the meals - ooh, what about passing this on to the kitchen?? To be fair he offered to return it but for the sake of one sad looking, small piece of lettuce it wasn't worth it.Having reached the end of the starters, my partner had just placed his knife and fork on his plate and was still chewing when a waitress came rushing over asking if we had finished. I couldn't help but say 'only just'. The main course was winging its way to us in a matter of about 2 minutes. We had opted for turkey and this was tepid, gravy a little sparse and floury roast potatoes that could have been vastly improved. We had forgotten to ask for only one portion of vegetables between us as we're not big eaters. We needn't have worried but as it turned out we left most of them. A little garnish perhaps might have prettied them up but the major issue was the hard cauliflour and broccoli. We're all for al dente but you really did need a steak knife as ordinary knives just weren't up to the task. On clearing the plates from our table one of the 2 waitresses asked if everything had been alright - I responded regarding the hard veggies and was completely blanked by both and just left to feel like a complete moaner. It's a pity that no one asked us once apart from this time if everything was alright with our food.We decided not to risk a dessert. It takes an almighty poor meal for us to complain, we've had far superior pub meals and it's not like the restaurant was full. To think we wasted hard earned cash on this meal, one that we were looking forward to.The food was mediocre, staff poorly trained and everything rushed. It will be a very long time before we return....if at all.

Visited the restaurant for Sunday lunch in March one week after Mothering Sunday. It had been highly recommended by a relative who had been there the previous week. Being a vegetarian I had discussed the menu prior to booking and made a number of easy suggestions one of which was agreed by the Chef, crepes with mushrooms. The venue is lovely and the staff friendly and accommodating, but fine dining it isn't. The whole experience was spoilt by the food, not only for me, but my friend who can eat anything. It lacked presentation, quality of food and a skilled chef with some imagination. My starter had green salad leaves circling my plate. Not very attractive or inviting. My main dish consisted of three rolled thick pancakes smothered in cheese. The chef obviously didn't have a clue. My friend's meal was not much better. She couldn't eat her favourite dessert of creme brûlée which she believed had been brought in, not freshly made by the chef/cook! The shortbread biscuits which accompanied the dish were the type you buy in a tin from the supermarket...My advice to the management is the building/grounds/location has so much potential, but If you want to compete with your contemporaries, I suggest you check out The School House at Weeford for some inspiration, and employ another Chef.

Went here for the first time recently. Splendid building and very tastefully furnished. Drinks at the bar first - a little perturbing that the waiter did not speak English..... and even more so that the GM had to hunt for a bottle of the Sauvignon Blanc that was clearly labelled on the wine list as one they served by the glass. Apparently we had the last bottle...but saying that, lovely place and good service generally. We both had chicken Caesar salad. The chicken was perfectly cooked, fresh, succulent and plenty of it. The salad crisp and fresh too but they did forget to add the side order.... A nice place to go for a formal dinner or lunch but a little staid if you are looking for a party atmosphere. Lacking something...maybe that will come as the place matures. Nice seating area outside. Can't quite get to griips with the locaton - just seems it is in the wrong place. Would we go back...yes can't really fault it but wouldnt put it top of our list.

I was very much looking forward to taking my mother and wife to this hotel for a "Mothers Day" luncheon.Upon arrival at the hotel we were asked our name and instructed to sit and wait in the lounge and that someone would be with us shortly to take an order, the surroundings and oppulance of this grand hotel were ruined by children running amock and parents paying no particular concern that afore mentioned children were shouting and dancing and basically being a nuisance.20 minutes after arrival my wife decided that it may actually be easier for me to go and make my own order for drinks at the bar, i ordered our drinks and the bar lady kindly said she would bring them to the table for us, when i enquired about the wait for our food order to be taken i was abruptly told by an asian lady that she was indeed the restaurant manager and that she would come and take my order asap.30 minutes later we still had not been offered menu's or any enquiries as to what we would require.Other guests that seemed to have tables booked after our alloted time seemed to be ushered through to the dining room rather quickly and with little grace, I feel like this was a very rushed and diorganised day and one that i was hoping to be a special treat for my wife and mother was sadly ruined by the lack of manners and general courtesy of so called management.I spoke to the receptionist John and enquired about the waiting times and lack of communication, only to be told that "as you can see, we are very busy today and will get to you when we can" this i feel is an unsatisfactory response and a little more attention to customer care is needed.i once again went to the bar to order drinks and patiently waited another half an hour to be asked if we would like to see menu's, i had actually helped myself to menu's that had been left on another table.By the time we had finished our second drinks my mother was anxious about the time and the fact that we had quite a drive back home, we decided to abandon the meal and visited a country pub on the way back to Gloucester. What i hoped would be a nice suprise and chance for quality time with loved ones in a beautiful setting sadly did not materialise. We informed the so called restaurant manager that we would be leaving and her response was "oh ok, thankyou for coming i hope you enjoyed your meal" !I shall not be returning to this hotel again

After reading mixed reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect from this recently opened restaurant. But being a local, I have always wanted to see inside, and finally got the chance after the new owners converted this beautiful building from private offices. On arrival, a few members of our group were missing, so we were offered a choice of taking a seat in the sitting room or being seated at our table. We decided to have a drink in the hotel lounge, and meanwhile were given menus to peruse. The restaurant is relatively small but was full when we were seated (mainly with hotel residents). The service was excellent. The food was a mixed bag - some of our group thought it was excellent while others thought it was average for the price. The menu is small, with about a dozen mains priced around £15, but with enough choice for everyone. Dinner for 6 with 2 bottles of wine was around £85. I'd recommend this place for special occassions - we'll definitely be going back again, maybe for lunch to see what the outdoor space has to offer.

On arrival the car park was empty as was the hotel. We asked if we were in the right place and were assured that indeed we were and that the three of us were the only guests for Sunday Lunch! The building has been largely tastefully restored (we won't mention the pictures in the dining room) and overall the appearance was one of refined elegance. Not so the meal. The wine was served in horrible thick rimmed glasses (the sort from the "Basics" range at any supermarket and generally finding service in student flats). The menu was exactly the same as the sample menu I had requested several months earlier. The starters were ok, but nothing startling. The mains were uninspiring and the desserts (with the exception of the creme brulee) inedible. The presentation of the food was appalling - a touch of the school canteen about it. The meal cost around £80 for 3 which included 3 glasses of wine. The weekend before I had a meal at my partners' local pub in York - a fraction of the cost, beautifully presented and delicious food. I know which one we we will be returning to.It is such a shame as I was looking forward to the visit. I recall playing in the derelict grounds as a child and even got permission to tour the house (45 years ago, Health & Safety didn't appear to concern itself with two youngsters wandering at liberty around a house with gaping holes in the floors). The house is truly a magnificient building and deserves better than this. I imagine most of their trade comes via mid-week airport/NEC guests, but If Castle Bromwich Hall don't up their game in terms of food quality, I really can't imagine it will still be open by Christmas. A sad reality.

Choice was not overwhelming but the food was absolutely to die for! Drinks are expensive (£4.50 for a pint and £5.50 for large wine) but worth the price.

I and my partner book a Valentine's meal in this restaurant. The building inside and out was wonderful and we were looking forward to a lovely meal. On arrival we sat in the comfortable lounge and were asked if we required drinks and were offered a menu. There was plenty of choice on the menu. We went to our table in the restaurant and all the tables were decorated in a Valentine's theme and again things looked fine.. Our starters arrived promptly and no problems with food quality. We both ordered rump steak for our main course and both sent this back as it was difficult to cut and chew. The steak was also dry. We were asked if we wanted a steak knife but refused as we said we were experiencing difficulty chewing it. We then ordered an alternative main course from the menu. This was a loin of pork. This arrived but then we sat waiting for our vegetables which were supposed to be brought to the table separately. We waited and waited, then eventually asked one of the staff about them. They went away, we thought to bring our vegetables but then they arrived with food for another table. Our vegetables never arrived so we asked another member of staff if we could have our vegetables. To give them credit they brought them to the table immediately and gave us a complimentary drink. Again the pork like the steak was dry and difficult to cut as we didn't have a steak knife but we both eat our meals. Also by this time due to time spent waiting it wasn't as hot as I'd have liked. After we'd finished our main course we expected staff to ask if we wanted our deserts but we had to ask them to bring them to the table instead. The same goes for our coffee and mints which we had to ask for. Coffee was supposed to be served with mints but instead we were presented with a small roll of Love Hearts which may OK for children but I was expecting a chocolate mint. I then asked for the bill and found that the drinks I'd paid for earlier were included in the bill. I explained I'd paid for these already and good enough these were taken off the bill. Finally I went to the Gent's washroom and although I did't require any, found there was no toilet tissue. The hotel inside and out looks fine and but I was disappointed with my experience there.

It was lovely. Beautiful surroundings, good food and very helpful staff. We will definitely be going back! It is so nice to see a local building brought back to life!

Visited today with a large group of my family to celebrate a 21st birthday. Fantastic historical building with some very interesting stories and history involving Lady Jane Grey and various members of the monarchy and government. Recently renovated but not over/under done. Very true to its original style but cosy and yet still contemporary.Hall and reception rooms feel grand and luxurious with a beautiful formal dining room. The food could not be faulted. We all had various selections from a 4 course menu and all loved it. I had red pepper and tomato soup to start, which is easily the best soup I have ever had. Followed by a traditional roast beed beef main with vegetables, potatoes, and yorkshire pudding. The meat was thick, tender and melted in the mouth. The dessert of apricot bread and butter pudding was to die for. For around £20 a head it was an absolute steal, and I push you to experience it before this little gem becomes fully booked for months in advance and prices double!

We didn't stay at the hotel, just used the Resturant and it was one of the worst meals I've eaten The soup starter was very bland and watery, the pork was dry and tough the only good part of the meal was the dessert. At no part during the meal did anyone ask if the food was ok.After we complained about the standard of food we discovered that the pork had been cooked after the breakfast service a few hours before. As I write this I'm feeling rather queasy, I hope I don't have food poisoning, wish me luck.

Nice breakfast to start the holiday off. Friendly staff although clearly stretched. More expensive than your high street one but to be expected.
