MORE AT OpenTable

This restaurant should really be called "The Cash Cow at the Airport". Given a fairly constant throughput of captive diners (you're unlikely to go anywhere else to eat if you've decided to stay), the management obviously feels safe in jacking prices through the roof (£4.50 for bread and butter, even if it's chilli butter, is absurd; and £19.50 for a pretty indifferent bacon cheeseburger is off the charts) and not bothering to update the decor, which feels 70s but is probably mid-90s. The OpenTable booking did not actually make it through to the restaurant, but luckily they could accommodate us. Service was pleasant and helpful, to be fair, although only one individual appeared to be allowed to seat people and take payment, which meant long-ish waits to do troublesome things like pay.

Service was very good , starters and my salmon I had for my main course was very nice but unfortunately my husband ordered the gammon steak which was more or less inedible mostly fat and so tough he couldn’t cut it with an ordinary knife and struggled with a steak knife! We should have sent it back straight away but he decided to persevere. We were offered a free desert as compensation but still disappointing.

Eat here whilst staying at the Marriott the night before a flight out of Gatwick. We did enjoy the food served, burger was juicy and very tasty as was pasta dish. As they have a captive audience though they really do overcharge. These two meals with two drinks and a garlic bread side came in at just under £50. This was with a 10% service charge which I think is cheeky to say the least when you are already paying these prices. All in all a nice meal but be prepared to pay way over the odds.

In a Marriott hotel I was hoping to have a nice restaurant to eat in.How hope faded, the staff are friendly enough but I am guessing they do not have an experienced head chef, more possibly somebody that took the job that they could pay low wages to.The food was lack lustre and tastless, some over cooked.I had pork belly for mains, the fat was not rendered down nowhere near enough and if you have pork belly on the menu then ensure you have a little crackling on the plate. Other members of my party, sea bass over cooked, sirloin steak not rested and more than likely cooked from chilled.Kids spaghetti well over cooked, pasta was mushy.Very dissapointed on the whole experience.

Due to our own stupidity we didn't book a table as soon as we arrived at the hotel, resulting in us having to wait till 8.30/8.45 for a table for 4 adults 2 children. Book early. Was it worth the wait? Not in my opinion. I ordered my favourite main pork belly. This was accompanied by scallops and cauliflower purée. I ordered a side of fries as this dish didn't come with any type of potato and I was ravenous at this point. The meat was dry, too much cauliflower purée (love cauliflower) it overpowered everything else. Unfortunately this led to me being disgruntled about the price, I'm happy to pay for good quality food but this was not to my liking. The reason I'm not marking it less is because the rest of the adults in my group seemed happy with their curries and sea bass.

First of all I must mention the staff, from the time we were met and taken to our table to when we left they were all kind, courteous and very helpful.Menu choices were good with even a specials board. Some very interesting menu choices as well.- not at all what I expect in an Hotel.I chose calamari to start with belly pork as a main. Faultless. The calamari was golden brown, beautifully cooked and very very tasty, served with a small dressed salad. The belly pork, again beautifully cooked, golden brown just crispy skin, served with cauliflower puree (very tasty) as an addition we had mixed veg and fries - probably on reflection the fries would have been enough as we couldn't fit in a pud. We did have a bottle of wine though, the ever popular Vila Maria from Marlborough.Bearing in mind where this hotel is, the prices were reasonable. All in all a very pleasant dining experience

When we've stayed at the Marriott previously, we've walked over to the airport terminals to eat. But since the redevelopment, the choice of land-side eateries isn't great, so we decided to eat at the hotel. The restaurant is modern & comfortable with a wide choice of dishes on the menu, including quite a few 'specials'. The prices are similar to 'posh pub' prices, so not cheap, but certainly not too extortionate. We shared a baked camembert starter which was very tasty & followed that with the pie specials (steak & ale, venison & red wine). Both were very nice, served with mash & nicely grilled veggies. The service was excellent & we drank a very acceptable bottle of Malbec for just over £20. No pudding as we were stuffed!

Nice hotel, nice ambiance, good service. But then the food arrived! I had to send back my calimari as it was fried dark brown with burnt edges. Couldn't believe a chef would go ahead and serve that, but it tells you all you need to know about this restautrant! Then I had pig cheeks that were delightfully tender but lacking in any taste. The gravy/sauce was similarly tasteless. The mash did taste good, but it was so heavy. Then the Pavlova, I should have cut my losses really, but I am a Pavlova fan. Or at least I was until this, The meringue was just like one of those dry meringue nests that I avoid buying in the stores. The ice cream seemed to be composed of nice ingredients, yet it too was bland. The fruit compote was very nice and they didn't mess up the cream. But fruit and cream does not a Pavlova make. I would stay at the hotel again but would not venture into this disappointing and pricey restaurant. Partly my fault for not checking reviews, but I was hungry having just stepped off a plane and the place looked nice. Don't make the same mistake!

I recognise this is a tourist hotel serving the airport, but as a regular traveller, Marriott user, and this time staying here on business, it makes no difference, the menu and quality of food is terrible. I don't normally waste time writing poor reports, but last night the food was the most unappetising I have ever seen and completely bland, so returned it. I ordered the Goan curry which was clinically served with zero taste. The meat appeared boiled with a "sauce" poured over the top, it certainly was not cooked in the sauce which would have been better used drowning chips. This was difficult after scanning the 5 choices of burger on the set and special menus whilst very hungry. It was topped by the £4.75 for a bottle of still water. This is the second time I have tried to eat here. The first time being 6 months ago where I had a very average steak, due to the lack of imagination on the menu. The is catering by numbers!

I mentioned this restaurant in my review of the Courtyard by Marriott at Gatwick. We decided to eat in the hotel restaurant due to the convenience, and from past experience (we used the restaurant when we stayed at the hotel for an airport stopover in 2014). I wouldn't go out for the night to the Casterbridge Grill if I wasn't on an airport stopover, but for a hotel restaurant at the airport I think it's pretty good. I am writing this review in light of this being somewhere decent to eat at the airport, not necessarily somewhere you would go for a special dinner. I noticed previous negative reviews about the staff wearing jeans. I don't see this was a problem - it's a better look and better suited to the restaurant than waiters in bow ties and suits. Plenty of very good restaurants have a relaxed dress code for staff - it appeared to be the uniform, rather than the odd member of staff turning up for work in their jeans. The food was good, although relatively pricey for what it was. But in line with what you would expect for the hotel and location. For starters we had tempura king prawns, and chicken skewers. Main course - a steak, and beef and chorizo burger. Decent bottle of Malbec. The food was very enjoyable, although the ribeye steak probably wasn't worth £29.95!The seating arrangements enable a sense of privacy, and it has a relaxed atmosphere that makes it feel almost like you are not in a large chain hotel, at an airport. The staff were very nice and service was good and unhurried (but the staff were available if you needed them).I like this restaurant, and would return next time we are staying at Gatwick airport.

We (my husband, myself & our son & daughter) stayed at the hotel overnight before our holiday flight the next day. We arrived around 4pm & were asked if we would like to reserve a table for dinner as it was going to be busy that evening so we said yes. We were met by a very tall man wearing jeans who showed us to our table. Some of the prices were a bit high so we went for the more reasonably priced dishes on the menu/come place mat. My son & husband wanted something slightly different from the bar so my son went to buy their drinks to make it easier. The man who had shown us to our table came to take our order. We weren't 100% sure what our son had opted for so asked for a couple of minutes until he came back from the bar. He came back a few minutes later & we ordered our food (we opted for main courses with the intention of having a dessert aswell). My daughter & I also ordered our drinks. The food was slow in coming & when it did (brought by someone else) the side order was missing & our drinks hadn't arrived. We eventually got the attention of the man who took the order & told him, he apologised & said he would arrange them. We finished our meals which were very nice. We were asked if we wanted to see the dessert board to which we said yes, however there was nothing which took our fancy & the prices were again on the high side so we opted to get icecream from the machine in the foyer & take it to our room. We apologised & said we'd changed our mind & could we have the bill instead. This came with a 10% service charge included (about £7-8). We didn't feel that the overall service & experience warranted that & my husband noticed on the menu that the service charge was optional. He queried this with the man when he came to take the payment. He attitude immediately changed from being polite to "so you don't want to pay it then??!!" My husband said we didn't want to pay as much as that, to which in his hissy fit the man missed & the full service charge was taken off. After taking the payment we watched him walk straight over to another man, the manager?? & was openly slagging us off! Not the way to treat customers! Needless to say if we stay at the hotel we will not be using the restaurant, we will ensure we eat before arriving!

Having dined at nice Hôtel resturants this was a let down. Very overpriced steak! And no peppery peppercorn sauce. Weird colour scheme for dinning. Not impressed

we stayed at the courtyard by Marriott before our outbound flight and again on our review. We took advantage of the steak and wine offer and were salivating when we arrived after we were bombarded with the huge billboards scattered around the hotel describing how they have prepared our steaks. We were told the offer was for a small steak. My wife went for this and I decided to go for something larger. When my wife's 8 oz delight arrived it must have been on a diet as it would not of been 2oz. It was inedible at best. Mine faired a little better but I would describe it as a poor second to a £5.99 super saver. We ate there on our return and my wife went for a lasagne as unprocessed meat is a bit beyond their capabilities and turned out to be the best option as I went for the Gammon which had been on the same diet, fried egg that was harder than the runway and peas that they forgot to cook. The hotel room was perfect but the food let the hotel down so badly. Stay there only if you want a great room but you plan to eat elsewhere

We have visited the restaurant purely for the reason we are staying in the hotel. And after paying over £50 for 2 main meals & 2 drinks we are highly dissatisfied. The meal was average at best & we be grudges paying the price we did for it. Had we not been staying in the hotel we would have walked out. Wouldn't recommend.

They know that you have no other choice of restaurant near the hotel so they make you pay and serve you poor food. My wife ordered the fried calamari - it looked and tasted like it just dropped out of the frozen food bag into the oil. I ordered the pricey (15 pound) burger and it was bad - very dry and tasteless. When I politely complained that it looked dry, on receiving my order I was told that its not about the looks but the taste. Sadly the taste never followed, only a hefty bill and grumpiness the staff.

Obviously the food would be overpriced as it's an airport hotel but the service and quality was terrible! Even the children said their food didn't taste of anything. Husband had the set menu with gammon as the main. The gammon was the size of a piece of bacon and tasted of nothing. I had the mushy vegetarian burger. Very cheeky that they have a service charge included in the bill and then ignore you all evening. We would have been better off walking down the road to McDonald's.

We stayed at Marriott Courtyard for 1 night to catch our early morning flight. The lobby bar and casual dining area was packed with patrons so we decided to eat at their Casterbridge Grill. It’s not that we had much of a choice as the only other option is to take a taxi elsewhere and restaurants in the area are few and far between unless you’re going to another hotel’s restaurant. Casterbridge really does not have the feel of a fine-dining restaurant as it is just a cordoned-off area that is an extension of the hotel’s lobby. Reservations were required so we booked at reception and were greeted pleasantly by a host when we went down for dinner. We were seated and introduced to our server, but getting his attention during our meal proved challenging. One two occasions we had to ask another server for assistance as ours was just missing-in-action. There were many steak and seafood options available on the menu as well as specials noted on a chalk board. In addition, there were a number of starters and some main course options for those who preferred something besides steak or seafood. My husband ordered their Goan Curry from the menu and I decided to try a steak (expecting it to be of superb quality being a steakhouse) so I ordered their Surf & Turf Special off the board. The restaurant is very expensive. A basic Fish & Chips is a whopping £14.95! We cringed at the £16.95 price for the Goan curry which turned out to be basically meat in bland curry sauce with some pilaf rice in the center. The rice seemed like just regular parboiled rice with some green herbs sprinkled on top. Certainly there was nothing special about this dish to warrant the price. My Surf & Turf comprised a 5oz. Sirloin steak with 3 grilled prawns for £24.95! I ordered my meat medium-well and it was still very pink inside when it arrived and the prawns were dry and bland. The main part of the meal was tasteless but the sides of Jenga chips and a large Portobello mushroom, were actually much better than the steak and prawns! We did not order any starters or dessert. Our bill for our 2 mains, 2 pints of beer and 1 juice came to £63.14! We’ve got not a bad word to say about Marriott Courtyard but our meal at Casterbridge was the huge disappointment of our stay and we feel that Casterbridge is bringing the hotel’s reputation down, rather than enhancing the guest’s experience. We will continue to stay at this Marriott but we will not be patronising Casterbridge again on any future visit.

While it was clear from the outset that the menu is priced based on the location and the convenience for hotel guests not to have to travel elsewhere, we couldn't help but feel that the meal that we had was very poor value for money. We skipped the ridiculously overpriced starters, and settled for the 'Gourmet' burger. We have had much better and tastier burgers for half the price. The patty itself was okay, but was running with juices, which proceeded to soak into the brioche bun and make the whole thing a soggy mess. My partner also had a small piece of bone in his burger to contend with. The meal was served with 'Jenga Chips', which were 6 thick cut chips arranged in a stack... Style over substance here. They were luke-warm, and didn't taste very pleasant. The dish was rounded off with a thimble-full of coleslaw.Needless to say, we didn't bother to see if we could be ripped off further, with more mediocre and overpriced food and drink. In fairness, however, we did complain to the manager, and we're offered complimentary drinks. Nothing wrong with the service, but the management of this restaurant are clearly trying to take people for a ride by charging the prices that they do.

We stayed at the Courtyard Marriott overnight before a flight to Geneva. We arrived quite late in the evening and were very hungry. We found a varied menu with all sorts of interesting specials on the board but we opted for good old fish and chips and were not disappointed. At first, we thought the portions were quite meagre however, this was deceptive because the meal filled us up and did not leave us feeling too full at bedtime. The chips came as 'Jenga' chips stacked up in thick chunks. They were really tasty. The ambience of the huge restaurant area was surprisingly pleasant for such a big room. There were candles on the tables and the atmosphere was very relaxing. Service was very good and we went off to bed feeling very chilled. A good way to start a holiday.

Three of us were staying at the Marriott overnight in readiness for an early flight the next day. Stupidly we opted to eat in the Casterbridge Grill restaurant in the hotel. As with all airport hotels, the drinks were overpriced. In general, the service was OK - friendly and courteous - but the food was a let down. Two of us had a steak (OK but nothing special) and the third opted for the Roast Poussin a la Francaise, described on the menu as "Marinated Roasted Baby Chicken, Bacon Lardons, Savoy Cabbage and Baby Onions in a Creamy Sauce". It was awful - a pale chicken, cooked but barely warm, the sauce was non-existent, though it provided an opportunity to play Hunt the Lardons and Baby Onions! It went back more quickly than it arrived. The most memorable aspect of deserts was when we asked for some extra biscuits to have with the cheese. It was only when we saw the bill that we found out that five cheese biscuits cost £3.In fairness, we weren't charged for the chicken - but the net result was that after deducting the drinks, a meal for two was nearly £80. I've had better value meals in a supermarket restaurant.

On approaching the restaurant walked past 3 kitchen staff smoking sitting on the grit bins. Booked table online as thought maybe busy but was surprised to find it quite quiet, took ten minutes to get the attention of the waitress to order our drinks and food and then another 50minutes for me to ask and point out that our food was waiting on the serving hatch for the last 5minutes. And then waited an age for us to be offered the desert menus to de the staff then clearing a table that had been left for an hour. The salad bar was poor and half empty and hearing families being told it would be an hour and half for a table when there was only a max of 4 tables with people eating didn’t seem right. On speaking to a staff member was told it was because they have been taken over by the hawth and half the staff have been sacked and the the rest have been cut right back so was only two serving staff on shift.

Every single time we go, something from the menu changes. First it was the garlic mushrooms that turned into breaded mushrooms with no hint of garlic but instead spice. Then the cheese sticks which were big and filled with cheese, the next week after that they changed them to being tiny. Chips are hit and miss, you might get cold chips and you might get fresh ones. Also expect your mushy peas to be freezing as they forgot to pop it in the microwave before giving it to us
