Castaways in Torfaen

We come here often. It’s always hit and miss as to the food and service you seem to recieve. I feel that to much time and effort is spent serving takeaway customers, than people sitting down to eat (and paying nearly double may I add). Expensive for fish and chips, and sometimes quite dirty if staff are busy.

Iv visited this place a couple of times and lately their food hasn't been as good as it normally is i always go for the breakfast but lately it's been cold when it has been served it used be pipping hot but for some unknown reason its hasn't the hygiene rating has gone down to it used to be a 5 but now it's a 3 so after having my food cold more than once it has put me off going back their which is a shame because the staff are lovely and the food used to be lovely

Service very slow, tables not cleared quickly. After 20 minutes I asked a passing waitress is we could order - told that she was busy and would be back - another 10 minutes before she returned. When we finally got food it was of a reasonable standard (lots of chips). Don't expect a high standard of clean but it was acceptable. They only accept cash. Waitresses need to be a bit more customer friendly and chat less to each other.

This is one of my favorite places to eat in Cwmbran as I'm not a fan of fast food chains like McDonalds. Food is always nice although it is sometimes it can be hard to find a seat! Last time I has the special which was very nice although some what price for a chip shop but worth it. I'll continue to eat here :)

Nice clean place with ample seating always a well presented breakfast and one of the few that actually looks like the breakfast picture on the menu card. Good polite attentive staff never too busy to assist.

Myself and my wife with my 83 year old mother in law visited Saturday, we were waiting some time to be seen as one of the waitress was having a full on conversation with I believe to be a friend, so only visiting the place for the second time I went to the counter to place my order, at which time I was told to take a seat and the waitress would come over. There seemed to an issue as this again took time. As we had been hear before and had no issue on our last visit we asked if we could have a children’s meal for my mother in law, as she has dementia and as such has a very poor appetite, we do not like to waist food we were refused. We stated this was provide previously but the waitress said the was not allowed but she would check as we had received this before. The I presume was the manager was not willing for this and seemed more concerned with who had previously provided the Children’s meal. Staying she would provide two fish bits and some chips, when we asked for a fish cake and chips from the children’s menu. The wast of food did not seem to matter only the fact that we should pay for an adults meal. This apparently is the policy which means they would rather through food in the bin than provide elderly people with portions that would reduce wast, I understand for younger adults but old aged people do not have the appetites of younger people. We just got up and went to another establishment who had no issues with providing this service. I will not return to this place for the sake of £1 or so to have to throw out vast amounts of food, it is disgusting hope you are proud of yourself.

Rated 5 hygiene but tables not clean, greasy floor, smells a lot of fried ! Staff very kind. Sugar is refilled!! Not very hygienic Malt vinegar is also refilled... Decoration very beautiful

I visited here one Friday lunchtime with a friend and her baby. It was busy but we managed to find a table. The staff were fantastic and allowed us to order drinks first whilst my friend fed the baby. We then ordered the meal and both had fish and chips. The fish was delicious, very fresh and meaty fish. Very tasty indeed. The whole experience was lovely and I highly recommend.

Great traditional chippy. Absolutely lovely staff. Very extensive menu a great stop for lunch. Would really recommend this place.

Went in for a portion of chips. An average amount for the Money, They were cooked ok but the quality was passable. The Service I felt from the young woman who served me was unfriendly and due to the fact there is other chip shops in Cwmbran I won't be taking my Custom there again.

visited this fish and chip shop today, with my sister on a day out. Have been there before without a problem and was served quite quickly. Today however was not the best experience. We arrived at 12.10pm and our order was taken quite quickly, our drinks were there within a minute or two. Then we got chatting as you do, and suddenly realised that a lot of people had come in after us and got served straight away..We asked a waitress to check out the order or us but she dismissed it as waiting for the fish to be cooked. so we waited, and waited and after an hour had gone by, we decided enough was enough and went to complain. They didn't have our order and the ladies sitting next to us also apparently their slip had gone missing. So I told them I was fed up and offered to pay for the drinks which they turned down. We went to house of frazer instead and had a lovely meal.... so thank you castaway I know where I will go next time... NOT TO YOUR SHOP

Had an enjoyable fish and chip lunch with a friend .Service was good and plenty to eat.Easy to access situation

Always have a good choice and prices are reasonable for the food you get. Sometimes have to wait for a table, but this is because it is small and popular! Would recommend.

Stumbled across this lovely fish and chip shop whilst shopping in Cwmbran on a busy Bank holiday. The service from Clare was fantastic and the cod, chips and mushy peas that we had were delicious. The restaurant was very clean (as were the toilets). Good value for money and left feeling very full. Would recommend to fish and chip lovers and will be back again!

Might be my fault, but didn't notice the cash only payment. Had to go round the corner (ok, not far) to queue at a Barclays to get cash. Food was ok, service was slow but friendly and the 15 pounds I had on me wasn't enough to cover my two meals and drinks.

Meals arrived quickly, curry sauce and chips and a cheese and chips. Chips were cold and saturated in oil so much so it was sitting on top of the chips, cheese showed no sign of melting some chips were raw and quite a few had bad bits on them. Both of us were only given a fork the same for the ladies on the table opposite. The curry sauce has a ring of fat around it on the plate probably from the could chips. Two coffees were made with instant coffee this wasn't mentioned on the menu, charged £2,30 for a teaspoon of instant coffee and max quarter pint milk! If this were my business I would be ashamed of the food served up.

We ordered fish and chips - food was alright, but it took a long time to come and just seemed quite expensive for what we got. I had to go to the bank (fortunately just next door) to get cash as they don't take cards.

Had a great meal there this week.Always cheerful,we have no complaints at all. Clean and tidy,great tea and coffee,and all the food is top quality.I would personally recommend the fish and chips,never had a bad one yet.Long may it prosper.

The service here is quite slow but it is a popular place and a typical chippy with large chip portions. Meals are ok but nothing special, lots to choose from on the menu and perhaps that could be part of the problem, personally I'd prefer less choice and better quality. It has poor access for the disabled owing to the chairs being too close together and the walkways can be awkward for mums with pushchairs.

If you are with a wheelchair user then you may have some difficulty as the tables are very close together. we found the only table were a wheelchair could fit the only problem it is beside the toilets. The food when it arrived was well cooked considering that we were there at lunchtime.

Firstly, the food here is lovely to be fair. Its a proper chippy so you wont go wrong with fish and chips or a kids meal for example. The problems, however, are manifold.

Visité aquí un viernes almuerzo tarde con un amigo. La camarera fue muy amable y muy servicial. Ella era muy agradable.

Metimos en una taza y tostada. Me gustó que estaba la mantequilla en la tostada y no margarina, lo que consigues en algunos lugares. Que diferencia tener verdadera mantequilla. El servidor era precioso, la señora muy amable, que animaron el lugar.

Este es el lugar donde siempre vamos para pescado y patatas fritas, ya que tiene el mejor cod en la ciudad. Por desgracia, nunca volveré allí de nuevo. Ayer fuimos en con 2 de nuestros nietos que son sólo de 5 y 9. El menú...

Una visita a Castaways es siempre un placer. El personal siempre es agradable y acogedor, y la comida buena, un tostado teacake o una comida completa! El pescado y las patatas fritas es especialmente buena. Uno de mis favoritos de lugares para comer en Cwmbran.

Fanatastic place operated by the same crew as Mr. Chippy. Same menu etc. This place is larger and has more comfortable seating. Staff are brilliant. We went in as a family gtoup of 13. Just shuffled a few tables arounf. No problem. Well done guys.Mow the only problem is which one to go in Mr. Chippy or here. Both great.

We visited the week before Xmas and throughly enjoyed it.Lovely hot fresh food served while you wait.Fish and chips was just what the doctor ordered.Nicely battered, it was great.

Lovely food staff are always friendly the only thing that lets it down is not enough seating to cope with the customers you can eat I or take away

This is a great place for lunch or diner but it is always very busy so you might have to wait for a table.The staff are pleasant and helpful and the food is good.

Myself and my friend have visited your restaurant on several occasions as she is a coeliac and it's very difficult to find anywhere that provides gluten free options and I have to say we have been dissatisfied on most of our visits. Every time we order the gluten free fish and chips we are made to feel as though this is a massive inconvenience. And twice now my friend has had chronic pains and swelling suggesting that there is gluten present! Massively disappointed!

Oh yes, I've said it. This place is better than Page's. It really is. Food here always tastes fresh. It's consistently good, never let down by the chips (Page's problem), never run out of anything. If you love proper, old-fashioned fish, chips and peas then go here. It's the business.

I have been to this place several times before for lunch and have always been satisfied with food and service. I went 3 weeks ago and didn't think it was up to its usual standard but thought it may just be an off day so gave it another try today 28.5.16We arrived at 2.45pm and our order was not even taken until 3.15pm the tables were dirty and non of them cleaned away once people had finished their food. I had to request our table be wiped.I mentioned this to a lady behind the counter( I was not rude or aggressive) and was told we are short staffed and there is nothing we can do about it, thats the way it is. I think this is appalling attitude to have to customers. I have been in placed with far less staff many more tables and run far more efficiently. I feel this is inefficient management, it would have taken only a few minutes with all hands to deck to clear the tables and make the place look more inviting before taking more orders.I am really disappointed to be writing this review as we used to enjoy eating here but don't think I will bother again.Now for the food chips were greasy fish was over cooked. Curry sauce was lovely.

Popped in for lunch. Fancied some scampi. Unfortunately they were over cooked and rock hard, which meant no succulent fish. Disappointed as have had some good meals here before.

Happened to be in Cwmbran for the first time in a long time and kinda followed my nose to this place sitting at the bus terminal.Always a good sign, I tried to get a seat for one but the place was full. Ended up with takeaway, and by far, the best fish I've had with chips in a helluva long time. A chunk of cod, steamed in the most perfect batter. I dunno what else to say, other than I'm salivating as I type...I'll definitely go back next time in town.

Called in to have a fish and chip lunch.good fresh chips and fish.the service was very good with friendly staff.will visit again.

Eat here regularly, having tried all the other restaurant breakfasts and this is the best. It's a great chip shop too, eat in or takeaway. Staff are good and friendly, my only criticism would be they are sometimes slow to acknowledge customers who sit at uncleared tables. Perhaps they hadn't noticed we hadn't ordered yet and the table required clearing. Nonetheless will continue to visit often. Perhaps try to acknowledge customers upon entry and tell the waiting staff, new customers have arrived.

We recently visited Castaways on a busy Saturday doing some late Christmas shopping. Despite being busy we found a seat and a wonderfully friendly waitress took our order in very little time at all. She made a big fuss of both children and really made us feel welcome.Traditional chippy food really didn't disappoint with all our plates cleared in no time at all. The bill was delivered to the table without even having to ask and service from start to finish was exemplary. Food is well priced, in keeping with the other sit-down restaurants in town and portion sizes are good if not overly generous. Sometimes they can be a bit miserly with the chips but I had no complaints on this visit. Pies, fish, curry and children's food are all family favourites of ours and I don't think we've ever tried anything in there we haven't enjoyed.It's worth noting that castaways don't accept cards, only cash, which has nearly caught me out a few times, but there's a couple of cashpoints just outside. Other than that though, this is the finest chippy in town and one of Cwmbran's very best eateries.

From the time we entered and had a lovely greeting and welcome from the waitress things were good. We started with a coffee which was the traditional coffee made with all milk and coffee - something I havent had for many years.All three of our group had faggots and peas and chips and they were fantastic. The meals themselves were very good size, a real rarity these days. The faggots were nicely spicey and the gravy lovely. The chips and peas were also great. All for 5.20 pounds each.Yes its not "white table cloth" but was the match of any meal I have had.Will most definately return

Nice food but on the expensive side especially for baked spuds. Have been here a few times and the standard is pretty consistent. Staff are nice enough and service prompt.

My daughters and I ate here today and the service was fast and friendly and the food was reasonably priced and delicious. The restaurant is well laid out and very clean and there is a nice loo too! Definitely be back food was piping hot and yummy!

Food and coffee excellent .... thou service can be a little slow when busy. Sometimes the waitress' forget to serve you in order. Would prefer a table number order by the diner themselves at the counter

Been eating here regularly for a few years. The food is hit and miss to be honest but generally have a good meal. The customer service recently however has improved no end - Claire is like a breath of fresh air to the place, making everyone feel welcome and chatting like old friends. Well done to you for keeping us coming back :)

I am a regular in Castaways and refuse to go anywhere else.The food is delicious, staff are very friendly and helpful and atmosphere is great.I highly recommend this place. If I could give it more stars I would!

Visited Castaways for the first time last week and I must say how impressed I am with the quality and price of the food! Service was also excellent and a lovely setting for my lunch! Well done to all at Castaways and see you again very soon!!

Decided to try traditional fish and chips today. Wow they were so good, tasted as they should. Unlike what you are served up in these chain restaurants. Will definitely be going back !

Excellent traditional fish and chip shop, must be the best around, today I had excellent cod and chips and my wife had pie chips and gravy, meals were served by very pleasant and helpful staff, perhaps a little bit pricey but you get what you pay for and these meals were well worth the money, well done to all!

Easily the best fish & chip shop around. The cod is superb!I won't be getting my fish & chips from anywhere else in future :)

The best fish and chips I have tasted in years! Beautiful fish and very good size portions. Not greasy at all. Extremely clean and lovely staff. Made very welcome. Love the decor too! Will most definitely be eating here again.

A good old fashioned fish and chip shop great cod best in cwmbran a bit pricey though more of a treat than a regular thing especially the price of a cuppa .

My husband and I have visited here a few times now. The staff are polite and they are quick to serve you. The faggots, chips and peas are the highlight for me here, they are very tasty!!!!! my husband likes the cottage pie. He had the lasagne on this visit for the second time and even though it was nice he said it wasn't as good as the last time (the beef and tomato layers weren't as rich and flavourful). overall though lovely food!! well done!

I've visited Castaways a few times recently and have been impressed each time. Stopped there for breakfast which was well cooked, well presented and a manly portion. Would have given a good review just for that.Then called at lunchtime and discovered their fish and chips. As good as the better fish restaurants in Whitby and fantastic value. Quick service with a smile tops off a very good experience.

this has got to be the best fish and chip shop in cwmbran , it is spottlessly clean , the food is cooked perfect , good value , served by some very cute girls , all in all a very nice expierience
