Food was good, however no choice in roast option due to the fact they'd sold out most of the chicken and beef before we arrived. We had to ask for spoons for serving the veggies, the drinks arrived after the food. The worst part was when we were asked if we were interested in ordering desserts and, after we all placed an order, the waitress came back apologising saying that most of our dessert choices had gone sold out. I'd highly suggest taking pre-orders especially on a busy day such a Sunday and for a table which has been pre-booked. Disappointing.

We recently moved to the area and was recommended to try this place by a local - it didn't disappoint! Wow! It absolutely has the wow factor! The beer garden was stunning - never seen one like it. Inside it carried on, the thought for design is clear. We did eat here and have to say it was delicious. We had the soup of the day to start then the curry and lasagne. Both my husband and I were very impressed. We'll be back! The service was above and beyond. Extremely friendly and polite, just what you'd expect from such a wonderful place. Visited due to family Birthday booking a few hours before. Little disappointed in the lack of communication that an event had been going on outside the garden area which is the garden off the annex where food is served.Took hour for food to be served with only three other tables of small parties. Waited for 15 minutes prior to being seated, 25 minutes to be served for drinks during waiting for meal and 20 minutes for the bill at the bar. Pub Meals came out very hot and tasty with large portions so food comes recommended. Waitress seemed new but in-fairness used best endeavours considering circumstances of the evening.Bar staff was more focused on wet trades of the event and not those eating except for young girl in striped dress who was very tentative and helpful at all times. I would recommend a visit but ask if anything is going on firstly as the bars are small and can be crammed. Don’t take this review as a total negative as it’s not just requires more thought if serving food and running events simultaneously. Other than that fully recommended!!

We were a group of 4 and a baby. We rang before arriving and asked if they accepted meerkat. We spoke to a woman and she said that they were and we told her to expect us shortly. We arrived just after 2 p.m. On the phone the lady explained that they were serving meals until 230 pm so that was great. This pub was out of our way and off the beaten track for us and thus when we got there and she asked the male chef if he was accepting meerkat and he said 'No' we were very disheartened and annoyed. The chef was extremely rude and pointed out to us that it wouldn't be worth his whole to cook us meals at half the normal price by the time he factored in gas and electric. We were in disbelief that it was advertised on the meerkat website that they did 2 4 1 meals, we had called up before hand and yet our custon was being turned away. This is in indeed unprofessional and reflects a poor standard of customer service. He was in no way apologetic and was extremely rude to us. I feel the manager should be made aware of how we were treated. As they had given us the wrong information when we rang and as it is being falsely advertised we feel that we should have been accommodated.I strongly advise people not to eat here as the staff are truly incompetent and rude. Furthermore they have only one star for food hygiene.

Called in to the Rising Sun about 6 pm on a beautiful summers evening. Our party of 5 adults, and 1 young child, were made to feel welcome straight away. We hadn't booked but we arrived before it got busy. We chose the Rising Sun because of the play area for our young grandson, who loved it and played with other children. We ordered our food, not too long to wait. The prices are good, not an extensive list, but what was offered is traditional pub food. The children's menu was priced to include an ice-cream. The food was hot, good portions and very tasty. We all enjoyed our meals. Again not an extensive desert menu but traditional puddings, ice cream and cheesecake. By the time we left the pub it was very busy. I overhead someone commenting how popular the pub is, and it's certainly that. A good traditional pub serving pub food. No pretentious menus at pretentious prices but a welcoming family pub. The pub is clean, well looked after and the toilets are very clean too! We enjoyed our evening

A party of six of use went to the Rising Sun last Sunday 1January for Sunday lunch. There were only four others there so it was certainly not too busy. The starters came, most had soup which I was told was only lukewarm. I chose bruschetta, which came on a piece of cold ciabatta, with cold tomato and onion chopped on the top. I asked the waitress to return it, which she did, reluctantly. She came back with it a moment later saying that the chef said it was supposed to be a cold starter! Ok some recipes have uncooked tomato and onion but usually the bread is grilled.

We went for our son's 17th birthday and were delighted with the friendly welcome, the atmosphere (beautifully done out inside) and wonderful food. We had between us chicken curry, sirloin, 5 bean chilli (on special) and Hunter's chicken. All were delicious and the chips and rice were large portions which made huge meals - and all at a very reasonable price (£50 for five of us with drinks). It won't be 10 years next time. Myself and a companion, with sore feet and tired legs, stopped here in the early afternoon intending to have a brief refreshing drink. I had previously stopped here for a similar reason on what I understand was the last day of the previous owner, when we were the only customers. What a change! The pub was well patronised with most customers eating. The menu was appealing, especially the £7 two course special for over 60s. Unfortunately our schedule did not allow us to stay and eat but I received several unsolicited testimonials from regular customers to the excellence of the food - rather unusual! Our plan to stay for ten minutes did somewhat extend when we found the soft comfortable sofas in the bar. The decor is interesting and homely. I had a good pint of real ale (Doombar) while my companion was satisfied with his several more complex drinks. Planning for my next visit will certainly include dining. Overall I was very impressed.

We visited the Rising Sun for a family of 6 Sunday lunch. The pub and restaurant itself is lovely, with a large beer garden and relaxed atmosphere. The disappointing aspect came with the lunch. There was a choice of 2 meats, pork or beef. We had a vegetarian relative who had to ask if there were any veggie options and the waitress had to ask in the kitchen regarding this. She was given just one option which she was disappointed with. our meals came, the veg portions were tiny, two small cereal type bowls with a spoonful of peas, carrots etc between 6 of us. Some of us went without so others could have veg. We didnt like to ask for more as we werent sure we could. The beef, although not bad, couldve been better. The saving grace was a large dish of cauliflower cheese, which, in my opinion, was lovely and saved the meal. The dessert options were limited, although they were nice. I think if attention was paid to the little things, like portion sizes, vegetarian options etc and more choice on the sunday lunch menu, it would've been a nice meal. I believe in fair constructive criticism so I hope I've been just in my review. Not sure we'd go back for Sunday lunch. I hope this lovely pub take on board what customers say as it would be a shame if the food lets down what could be a good place to go.

Food was good - although my only issue was with regard to the broccoli and stilton pasta bake; it had no hint of stilton in it - which made a blasé, albeit tasty, vegetarian cheesy pasta bake. My husband enjoyed his sirloin steak, which was cooked exactly as he liked (medium). I had apple pie and fresh cream for dessert, it was nice (it wasn't the most amazing apple pie I have tasted - but by far not the worse). Service was good, waitresses were polite and accommodating - even when put under some unnecessary pressure by a member of the group.

Not much to say about this pub apart from - lovely home cooked food, great beers! And friendly staff. It's a lovely little pub and my only criticism is the seating is uncomfortable and that's a shame because otherwise we would have stayed longer.

My meal was fine but my wife had issues with her meal as she found the poultry to be rather tough. The menu asked people to be patient as the meals were home cooked but i though that 80 minutes was excessive.

I would recommend this pub, I would pre book a table as it can get busy, its a real old traditional pub unlike many carverys where you feel hurried, it offers a relaxed atmosphere and the service together with food its very good, the area has many attractions so you could make a great day out. I have now sat several meals with no complaints.

I visited the Rising Sun with my family (6 of us including 2 children of 4 and 2) on Saturday 20th Dec, 2014. We had pre-ordered our selections from the Christmas menu. The table was well laid out with crackers, etc., but what I want to comment on is the quality of the food and service. My wife, Margaret, had salmon and it was cooked to perfection. Moist with an excellent sauce. I had requested a blue sirloin steak against my better judgement, because most blue steaks end up medium rare in restaurants and the 'rares' end up medium. This was a genuine blue steak - seared on the outside but raw all the way through. Perfectissimo! I love bloody meat! Just wipe its bum and slap it on the plate! The rest of the family had turkey which was - well, turkey. They loved it along with an enormous helping of vegetables. I could find nothing to complain about. The young woman serving was perfect with the kids. I asked for a cheese board which was not included on the standard menu, but this was provided without hesitation at no extra cost.Well done Rising Sun! I will certainly return. The food is great and the prices and service also great.

There was a time when the old steam engines that ran from Blaenavon [ now a World Heritage site because of its industrial past] down to Newport and its docks brushed past this old inn. Now it's a fully fledged restaurant with views across the Afon Llwydd to the Lasgarn Wood. Meals are served in the Gwyneth Room- named after the previou owner- or in the pleasant enlarged garden{ DR B}. Lunches, served between noon and 3pm range from the cheap and cheerful- averaging £6.50- £7.00 to the full menu with starters at under a fiver and to their mixed grill of steak, gammon, pork chop, sausage, chicken, mushrooms, grilled tomato, onion rings and an egg served at lunchtimes or between 6:30 and 9:30 for £14.95. In between there's vegetarian and fish dishes,a chicken curry, minted lamb shank, lasagne, gammon, pork loin and a choice of steaks. Wines- white and red- New World, French,German and Spanish for the princely sum of £10.25.......and so friendly...( and if you're over 60--2 course lunchtime meal for £6.00!!!!- Tuesday to Friday)

I visited this establishment during the rugby session. The board outside stated that evening meals are served after 6pm, with this in mind i stayed to watch the rugby before having a meal. At 6 i asked if they were serving food and was told no, Not on rugby day!!! I could not believe what i heard and the customer service wasnt up to standard either. The man was basically rude.

Went here today for lunch. We ordered Chicken CURRY rice and chips. However when our meal arrived, it was no way CURRY, it was sweet and sour chicken. We asked the waitress if this was sweet and sour and she replied no it's a "fruity curry". We asked for some chutney... " that will be extra cost"?? Said the waitress so we said ok that's fine. The so called CURRY was literally some cooked chicken tipped into a jar of sweet n sour. Both left our meals, as it was disgusting!!! Won't be going back would not recommend.

We have had several good family celebrations here in the past. My partner contacted them two months in advance for my birthday celebration and they said they'd get back to him shortly regarding menu. They didn't. They emailed him three menus for roast dinners, one beef, one lamb and one turkey. I was concerned at the prices (£16.50-18.50) as their three course Sunday roast is around £10 per head. Nevertheless, he went round our party of 22 asking for their choices. With the party less than 2 weeks away he called in to give our menu choices and was told there was no way they would cook more than one meat. He suggested they could get smaller joints but they said no, we would have to go with the majority choice. And they also said that although they had offered three flavours of cheesecake it was likely they would only provide one flavour. The whole family agreed this was not at all customer friendly and so we have taken our business elsewhere and will not be returning to the Rising Sun in the future.

We visited with a large group (27) for Sunday Lunch and enjoyed an excellent meal. The conservatory at the rear of the building is a lovely place to eat as it has lots of natural light and overlooks the large gardens. We were given a warm welcome by the waiting staff and quickly seated. The service was very good considering the numbers and the different number of courses chosen by our group members. The food was very nicely cooked and there was plenty of it. The potatoes and veg comes in separate serving dishes, with more than enough to go around. The staff are mainly local youngsters and have clearly been well trained, as they were polite, efficient and attentive. We had combined the lunch with a visit to Big Pit Mining Museum, which is about 15mins away by car in Blaenavon. All in all, we thought the pub / restaurant was a really good choice for Sunday Lunch and certainly would return if we are visiting the area.
