This place was absolutely amazing. The burgers here are brilliant. The desert is brilliant and don't get me started on how polite the servers are it was so good I went home and told my friend I wanted to go back and have more.

Had Sunday lunch, food was delicious. Service excellent, staff very attentive and very friendly.

Had a very good over night stay the evening meal 😋

Ten of us booked The Star for the three course Christmas Meal at £17.95 per head .It was really good value for money and very efficient , friendly service. Good choice of starters - soup, salmon pate or tomato tartlet all prettily plated with garnish. Nine of us had the turkey - again beautifully presented with stuffing, pig in blanket, roast parsnips and roast potatoes alongside platters of veg- sprouts, carrots, peas, red cabbage, boiled potatoes and additional gravy- allhot and very tasty! Choice of desserts- Christmas pudding, cheesecake or warm chocolate brownie with ice-cream - and those who couldn’t find room for their desserts took them home in foil trays - great service! A big thank you to Lydia - the chef - we sadly didn’t get the chance to thank her personally- she did a great job ! Diolch yn fawr iawn - we will return !

We arrived after the funeral very nice bar person seated in the restaurant we were told by our host no buffet because we are next to very nice chip shop ordered what we wanted food 1st class hot and quick and What a portion That Will Do Me👍👍👍

I don't really know what to say about my visit here! We walked in as a family today (Monday afternoon) Asked the man behind the bar if we could sit anywhere and his response was "we don't do food.we do food again on Wednesday" I can honestly say I have never been to a family restaurant that didn't serve food it was a bizarre experience lol!! We then went onto a lovely restaurant in Cwmbran who served food. Very odd place

The food and service are second to none and brilliant value for money, by far the best pub restaurant in Ponthir. Dave and the staff are always friendly and everything on the menu is delicious.

Had arranged to meet up with friends. Had googled and checked social media page, in advance, with no indication that there was any issues. Arrived to find pub door open but when we walked in @3:15 were greeted and told not open until 4pm. No sign on door or outside. Rechecked all pages, again, which showed pub should be open. Ended up going onto another pub and having great service

A pleasant pub, with friendly staff, that serve a good pint. Kept very clean with hand sanitiser on each table. They should ensure that their opening times are kept up to date on available media to avoid inconveniencing and disappointing people.

We came here after the total fiasco at the Hanbury. We were glad we did as our group had a great evening. The food was excellent and our waitress, Tracey I think, was so welcoming and friendly that we're going again next week.

Attended a get together of former colleagues on Friday night just a big thank you for the excellent service we received, under these difficult times the bar staff were really hard working and pleasant. The buffet was also first class recommend to anyone.

Wanted somewhere to grab a cheap lunch and have a couple of pints whilst watching the football recently. The star fitted the bill.. Menu is basic pub grub, but its cheap and portions were huge (too big for me really!).. beer is good and reasonably priced and the atmosphere was friendly. Don't expect fine dining, but for a cheap fill it's a decent option.

Me and my husband were visiting wales and decided to stay an extra night and asked in a local spar shop if there was any B and B local a lady suggested the star pub down the road so we went to check it out . On arrival we asked if they let rooms and a lovely owner Dave said they did but hadn’t let for a while but said we could have a room to help us out ! Lovely room and pub friendly and quaint After drinks And chats with the locals we had a laugh and enjoyed the evening ,we went to our room and was lovely comfortable bed waking in the morning we sat outside enjoying the we were met by the love chef who made coffees We went off and later returned to have Sunday lunch there wow lovely meal and plentiful also desserts were beautiful and amazing prices £9.95 for 2 courses staff couldn’t be more helpful . We have daves number now for when we are visiting wales again as would definitely stay here again and definitely eat here again !

I often go to the Star for a Sunday roast these days as it’s consistently superb and very good value. I’ve been immobile post op for a bit and was getting stir crazy so went just for a drink but ended up eating (lamb shank, chicken pasta) and the food off the menu was just as excellent as the Sunday roast. What I also realised when thinking of where to go was where was accessible. I decided to write a review, not because the Star is a new discovery but that others might find it useful to know that this place has disabled parking, a fully accessible toilet and has flat access. To top it off, staff and regulars are very friendly and helpful if you come unstuck! Im long term disabled but way less mobile at the moment and just hope this helps someone. There’s lots of pretty old buildings around the area but I now understand the joy of a toilet you can get into!

This inn is top of our list for service, food and drink. The curry’s are outstanding best around and everything we have had from the menu have been enjoyed thoroughly, and the price is exceptional for the quality and quantity of food. Sunday lunches also are second to none, Brilliant all round

having booked this meal months in advance i'm afraid this visit fell well short of the standard that we experienced before.we (4 of us)waited 50 minutes to be served our starter then approximately 20 minutes for our main and 15 minutes for the desert.the food was ok but i think it would have been courteous to offer an apology or some sort of explanation about the delay but the young waiting staff just presented the food and cleared up as people left.an elderly couple behind had ask for their desert after waitng such a long time.sorry but wont be visiting for christmas lunch next year.

Fue cuesta abajo desde allí. Las bebidas eran reemplazados pero sólo ligeramente mejor. Tomé mi abrigo, pero ponerlo nuevamente después de 5 minutos y mi amigo nunca llevó la suya. Teniendo en cuenta que es suave tomó algunos haciendo. Comida ordenados tuve una hamburguesa que para ser justos, pero disfruté de la izquierda más de patatas fritas, ya que parecía calentarse no es agradable en absoluto. Amigo dice Chili no estaba muy caliente. Comer con abrigos en sábado no es una manera estupenda de relajarse. Ofrecieron el postre mi amigo dijo que buscaría en menú 3 cosas básicamente ofrecieron o helados. Así que pagamos y la izquierda. No me ofrecieron una disculpa sobre lo frío que era o que era obvio que no nos impresionó. Conseguimos en el coche para una cálida. No volveremos aquí!

Me apareció por una pinta o dos recientemente durante la semana. El ambiente era bastante bueno y había bastante gente en el bar. El camarero Nick era muy atento y se aseguró de que eran bienvenidos.El único problema era la falta de ale. La primera vez que fui allí eran unas cuantas botellas, pero después de eso nada.

En la esperanza que sólo hablé tenía una mesa para comer el domingo, por suerte para nosotros no! Una deliciosa comida con sabroso, se deshacen en la boca, carne, patatas asadas y verduras de temporada también cuatro como bebé patatas! un montón de salsa deliciosa y el servicio amable! Así que me alegro de que llama, sin duda volveremos! Gracias!

Fuimos con unos amigos, tres de nosotros tuvimos los pensionistas especial, solla y patatas fritas, helado y té o café, que era excelente y buena relación calidad-precio a 6 libras. Tres campos de 2 tenía el 7.95. y dijo que el jamón huevos y patatas fritas eran buenas. Otra dijo que ella era la mejor lasaña había probado. El paté también era excelente, así como el hígado y el sobresaliente. Servicio de camareros fue excelente y nada era demasiado problema, sin duda volveremos.

We had Sunday lunch here last week, quite nice - lovely thick cuts of meat. Only downside was the black Yorkshire pudding! I like them well cooked, but this was cremated! Otherwise adequate meal all round.

Still my favourite place to eat when I come visiting family in Wales.We came for dinner on Tuesday 2nd August we didn't book as we thought it wouldn't be very busy however it was quiet busy, didn't wait too long though and staff was pleasant and helpful as our previous visit. My husband and I went for the two steaks and a bottle of wine for £20.00 whilst others chose off the early bird and it was lovely. The only thing I will mention though is we were sat not far from a large table and they were terribly rude to the lady that was serving them it was very uncomfortable to listen too. All in all though we thoroughly enjoyed our evening and will definitely be returning next time we are in Wales.

After looking for somewhere different to go I went on trip adviser for suggestions and the star had 4/5 ratings. I was so disappointed. We walked in it was like a goast town not a welcoming environment we sat down where we then had to walk back to the bar to order drinks none to serve us drinks. Then when we ordered food my partner ordered "a gourmet burger" which looked like a Iceland frozen burger with cheap burger cheese on. When we asked for sauce it came after we had finished out meal. My partner did not even eat half of his burger and later throw it up as it wasn't "gourmet" at all. Bearly cooked through i then told the staff who charged me £10 for it and just giving me a blank look back. Would never go there again. Spent £30 nearly on a terrible meal.

We visited on Sunday. All of us chose the Welsh lamb for the roast. The meat was very tasty and lean. It melted in the mouth. There was lots of vegetables and plenty of gravy. Perfect Sunday lunch.

I'd eaten here once before a few years ago with my family and it was quite frankly one of the worst experiences I've had dining out. Both the food and the service were so laughably poor I almost expected Basil Fawlty to walk into the room. This experience, however, has provided my family with a hilarious inside joke centred around the words "that's how it comes". Basically my stepdad had asked for no peppercorn sauce on his meat (or some kind of sauce) and of course it came with this sauce smothered all over it. When he brought this to the attention of our server she replied with "that's how it comes". On the way home we picked up a takeaway. The thought which passed through my head as I boarded the plane at Newcastle airport on my way to visit my family was "well... It can't possibly be any worse than before". Turns out I was pleasantly surprised that have definitely improved. For a starter I had the prawn cocktail which was nice enough (though you'd struggle to mess up a prawn cocktail). For mains I had the chicken burger which was actually very nice and so were the chips, though it would have been nice to have been asked if we wanted any sauces. The onion rings were perfectly edible but bought-in standard things where I'd prefer it if they'd make them themselves. Service was friendly but average and for most of the meal we were the only people there so the atmosphere was a bit dead but maybe that's because it was a Thursday night. The extension where the dining area is wasn't there when I was last in this place so it's all fairly new and to be honest they could have done better with their choice of décor. It looks somewhat like a care home dining room. All in all I had mixed feelings about the evening. But my grandmother enjoys it which is the main thing. I wouldn't choose to come back but I wouldn't decline to attend if invited by family again.

We entered a large and tidy restaurant area, with lovely flowers on the table, but only one other couple present.We both had potato and leek soup to start with, and it was unfortunately awful. You couldn't taste any leek or potato it was so hot with pepper.When mentioned to the waiter, he offered me a free pudding - no good as a diabetic. I declined.My main course was ham and egg with some peas and chips. The ham was lovely and thick, and the egg was cooked just how I like it. Unfortunately, there was a problem with the chips - they were soggy, as though they had been made a while previously, and re heated.We shall not be going there again.

This is one of the few pubs in the area that has a pool table which I love. Very rare to find that.The beer was excellent too.The food however was awful, four of us ate there and all four of us left pretty much full plates. Just terrible quality meat. We complained, very politely and discreetly to the landlord who offered us a discount next time. Not really good enough as it obviously involves paying full price for a terrible meal, then later having a (presumably) terrible meal at a discounted price. Needless to say we haven't been back since.

This was my second visit to this very welcoming restaurant. The food was superb and the staff were very friendly and helpful. Good value for money. I would definately visit again and would recommend this place to anyone.

Sunday lunch, go every Sunday, perfect, if you want more, ask for it, the staff are so nice, and helpful, who ever cooks this lunch knows how to cook.

Went here for lunch in Friday with family. Haven't been here for a year or so but thought we'd give it a go. We were the only people in the restaurant on arrival, fist impressions weren't very encouraging. No ambience at all. Unwelcoming feel about the place. Could do with sprucing up and made more welcoming. Soft music? Flowers on tables? Change layout? Although the waiter was friendly, his appearance was less than desirable I'm afraid. A little unkempt and his splinted arm looked quite grubby. Not a good impression. But, saying all that, the food was nice! 4 star food, well presented and tasty, so compliments to the chef! It would t take much to bring this place up to scratch, just some tlc and imagination.

Me and my wife ate here on Tuesday and we went for the steak deal we each had a rump steak and a bottle of Merlot for £20.00Steaks cooked to perfection and came with chips, mushrooms and onion rings. Compliments to the chef, as my wife said it was the best steak she had ever had.We will definitely be returning in the future as the curry night also looked tempting.

Visited for Sunday lunch with family from Newport, after some mixed reviews on here we wasn't sure what to expect. Very impressed! I had the roast beef which was cooked to perfection and very tender my husband had the Welsh lamb and again beautifully cooked. Plenty of choice on the vegetables and the homemade gravy very tasty. We had chocolate fudge cake for after a with ice cream and again lovely but could of done with a bigger portion if I was to critise at all.Staff attentive and helpful. Highly recommended.

Haven't been here for a while (had a poor meal there in the past) but my husband and I decided to try it and we had a pleasant Sunday lunch. The place has been refurbished since our last visit and although the restaurant area is a bit clinical its clean and well laid out. We ordered the rib of beef dinner and it was hot and plentiful. Homemade Yorkshire puds, crispy roasters and a big ball of tasty stuffing accompanied by lots of veg and a jug of gravy. We were left a little bit too long between ending our main meal and being asked if we wanted dessert and the place wasn't that busy. We ended our meal with ice cream which wasn't the best quality and a bit overpriced at £2.50 each. However overall a pleasant Sunday lunch.

I didn't even know this place existed until my Sisters booked it for our Mum's birthday meal and I'm glad that they did!I was amazed by the quality and presentation of the food. There were a variety of steaks, fish, curries and starters on our order - each and every dish was outstanding and they don't skirt on portion sizes either. Nobody in the party had a single complaint.Highly recommend this place to anyone, it's not overly expensive, you pay normal prices for the steaks/mixed grill but you won't be disappointed!

Went to the star for a meal, my husband and myself had gone about 2 months ago and enjoyed the food, so decided to go again. This time the food was not as good, the quantity was there but not the quality. Not sure why?

Booked a table for 4 when arrived discovered Mike had moved but pleased to see the staff was still there I had garlic mushrooms to start followed by mixed grill the food was ok but not up to mikes standard still pleasant atmosphere and had a laugh with the staff Mike will be missed

Dreadful, staff were polite but the service very poor. Staff didnt seem to communicate with each and didnt know which table they were waiting on. The lamb served to both of us was cold yet vegetables were hot?. When we asked for anything in terms of drinks or even the bill, its took far too long to be served. Overall.i wont be going back. Disappointed.

I do not understand why the restaurant at this inn,is never busy at lunch times or in the evenings.When it was always busy under the last landlord.The food is as good as it always was previously.I just do not understand why they do not get much custom any more,as the food is as good as ever.

I visited the star in last night with a group of friends as we had heard how welcoming the landlord and landlady was and we weren't disappointed the food was outstanding and the staff are very friendly I would give the star in a 5 star rating and definitely come back again.Many thanks to all the staff.

Arrived 10mins early, they sat us down took our order but did not ask if we wanted drinks, so I piped up and said can you take drinks order, staff were young & disorganised, received food order were asked if everything was ok before we even took a bite of food. Food was luke warm my beef was very fatty, more fat then meat, I told them when they eventually asked if food was ok, they offered nothing so I asked if I could have pudding at no extra costs, waitress had to ask, they offered ice cream even though sweet was all same price, I excepted. When we received bill they charged for ice cream so I had to ask them to take it of the bill. It was also cold in the restaurant, radiators cold. Noticed they has 2 stars for food hygiene. Will not return.

Really love food gammon was lovely just like butter melting in your mouth the eggs were lovely and the chips were absolutely delicious.I personally recommend anybody who is looking for a real good gammon Dish to head here.keep up the good work

We had excellent service from a very attentive landlord, who made sure we had everything we needed. The food was well cooked and very well presented. The chips were obviously home made, excellent flavour and the chicken pie was the best I have had in many a year, It was an actual flaky pastry pie (not just a lid on top of a dish of meat!!) and was full of chicken. It was superb and I sent my complements to the chef. The only problem was that is was quite cold but the landlord did apologise for this explaining that their electrics had gone off in the morning and had only just come back on. I would definitely come here again.

Came for Sunday lunch for the first time and will not be returning, nice pub but the staff didn't seem to have any idea what was going on waited 25 minutes for the starters to arrive which was soup and a prawn cocktail soup was watery and tasteless. Waited a further 30 minutes for our mains to arrive to which had a burnt Yorkshire on and when asked the young waiter if we could change them he went to see if this was possible to not return till we had finished. Big disappointment and a lack of leadership or customer service

Attended for afternoon tea with a friend to celebrate our birthdays. Pastries, sandwiches and cakes which were lovely. Also has coffee. Enjoyable to relax here with no one rushing us out of the door. Highly recommended thanks to Donna the new landlady. New menu looks really nice too so will pay you a visit to sample that soon also

Stayed at Coldra Premier Inn...visiting from Norwich area...nice local restaurant...friendly welcome...good service...thoroughly enjoyable meal & free drink with meal as Thursday special offer included cider & rum & coke. Gourmet burger excellent as were the ribs & gammon. Staff very attentive...thank you for a very nice evening. Would recommend & visit again. Reasonable prices too.

We visited for a valentine's meal. However have previously visited on several occasions both as a family and a couple. We live some distance away near to Cardiff and still return to this restaurant, having initially visited some years ago following a family funeral when we were not disappointed either. The food is always of consistently excellent quality, served piping hot and plenty of it. We had become very disppointed with other large chain restaurants and this is why we had decided to return more recently. We would all highly recommend this establishment. The staff are always friendly and the service excellent, in fact we cannot find any faults at all. We wish them well with their continued success, definately well worth a visit. The menu broadly consists of good british food prepared and served to a very high standard. Well done to every one at The Star.

My sister and I arranged a surprise meal here last night for my mam's birthday. There were 23 of us in total and we provided a pre-order. The Inn is lovely and we were given a lovely spot where we saw the birthday girl arrive. They accommodated her order late and even one of the guests who wanted to add on a late starter. Prices were brilliant for the quality and portions and the staff were friendly. Nothing was too much :)The service was quick for 23 of us and there was another large table there. The food came out hot and everyone said how amazing it was! Would definitely recommend and have to say well done and thank you for accommodating such a big (and often noisy!) table :)

Had lunch on Christmas Day with my mother and son. Every seat was taken, the service and food was excellent. There was no rush for us to leave after finishing our meal even though there were 2 more sittings after ours.The staff were really pleasant and nothing was too much trouble for them.

Do not recommend this place for big parties the food was shocking staff were very confused with orders Not worth a visit won't be going back there was 2 different prices for drinks just because we were on the one side of the bar we had to pay alot more for our drinks.

After walking through the rain for our Xmas Lunch we were very pleasantly surprised ,( after reading several negative reviews) .We had a lovely Xmas lunch ..the staff were efficient,attentive and friendly . The food was very good, well presented and tasty . If anything there was too much ...A big thank you to all the staff as we thoroughly enjoyed our meal and will certainly return in the future,hopefully so we can sit out on the terrace

Great welcome , apt environment, very accommodating staff.the venue was suited to the party of 40 eighteen year olds, disco played current tracks that got all dancing! Buffet was a welcome refuelling station.

Went to the star for food as a friend was visiting when we entered we were seated by a lovely waitress who took our order straight away food was superb I had the surf and turf and my friend had the lamb shank portion size was fantastic as was the price the staff were all very friendly and made our night overall we were very happy and will definitely return

Actually worth 5 stars! Well known pub which is very welcoming with a large restaurant. Lovely food, great service and overall excellent value for money.( Only £10 for three courses if you eat between 5 and 7pm). My husband had pate on toast for starters, liver, bacon & onions for his main course plus a delicious dessert . I had prawn cocktail ( beautifully presented) for starters, spicy chicken & sauté potatoes for main and a Blueberry Sundae for dessert. A great place to eat on a Friday night when you don't want to cook!

We had this meal on 7th November 2015, but we had been here in October for a family meal and even though we had to wait a long time the overall meals including steaks were cooked as required with no complaints.What a difference a month makes my son ordered chicken and rib combo, every combo we have had before comes with 1/4 or 1/2 chicken and 1/2 rack of ribs his came out just like the combo starter with wedges on when the owner was asked is this the chicken combo meal he said yes this is how we do it, but we had to wait another 5 minutes for chips and ribs which had been cooked in microwave. However the worst part of the meal was that I ordered a t bone steak cooked medium rare and I had a t bone steak which was rare, it was tough and I could not cut it with a steak knife that's how bad it was. I could not eat the whole of the sirloin side of the steak and told the waitress to tell the owner and the chef it was the worst steak I had even had. No one came to apologise or ask how the meal was and the owner went back and fore all night without saying a word he obviously knew we were unhappy. Would not recommend this pub for a meal and will never be going back what a shame.

Read the reviews and my wife and I decided to try it out. Went in and the decor was very average pub, heart sank a bit. Got the menu, a bit too good for standard pub grub. Got the food, a bit to good for standard pub grub. Very well cooked and presented. Actually brilliant for the price paid. We went mid week and there was a offer on of 3 courses for £10. Bargain. Watch out when you pay, they didn't apply any of the special 'offers' so I had to ask for them.

24 ladies lunched here. We had ordered in advance Superb value 1 course £6.95, 2 courses £9 and 3 courses only £10Each course was delicious The service was very good and they were really obliging moving furniture so that we could be togetherLight and airy restaurant

Visited The Star Inn last night for the steak and wine for two offer. The meal was excellent, huge portions and freshly cooked. The staff are very helpful and welcoming - well worth a visit! We will be back!
