Casamia may be closed permanently but I think it's important to get this off my chest. They contacted us months ago informing us they would have to cancel our table as we were booked in on their last ever service intended for friends and family only, but when they heard we were to be married the day prior and it was part of our mini-moon they went above and beyond and invited us regardless. When we arrived Joe had clocked us coming and extended a very warm welcome. He clearly loves his craft and has the charisma for it. We were taken to our seats by Amy and Aisha who were lovely and kept us at ease. The entire place oozed cool but regardless we never felt out of place. All the FOH team, Sommelier and chefs were kind, funny and made the entire evening special for me and my wife. The food was obviously incredible, 20 courses each competing with eachother for the best but all wonderful. The icing on the cake was the wine flight which was a gift from the restaurant. Every glass had a story and it all tasted phenomenal. The guy really knew his stuff. We both wish every success to all the team with whatever lies next and a big thank you for what became the highlight of our honeymoon! Congrats Amy & Joe we hope the wedding is a laugh! It is perhaps slightly academic reviewing a restaurant that is closing in August and is most likely fully booked up until then, but just on the off chance that anyone is still trying to book here goes… First impressions were that it’s all quite dark, and in fact as we were led in it was difficult to even make out where we were going. Once you are in though it’s quite a pleasant low lighting level, and your eyes soon adjust. As others reviewers have said, it’s a little different with the loud(ish) music and lighting effects. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, but the volume level was actually fine. Sure, it’s louder than would normally be expected in a restaurant, never mind a top end one, but I was actually pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this and how much it added to the ambience. I’m not particularly hip and trendy when it comes to music and I don’t think I recognised any of the tracks, but helpfully you’re given a QR code at the end which links you to the Spotify playlist, so you can explore the music at your leisure. The disco style lighting didn’t really get going until quite late on in the meal and again, I thought that added to the atmosphere rather than detracting from it. Despite the twenty odd courses served, most are just a single mouthful and I don’t think any of them were more than a couple. That might sound as though you’ll leave feeling hungry, typically with a tasting menu you’d expect at least a couple of more substantial dishes, but that wasn’t the case here and any more food would have been a struggle. With so many courses it’s difficult to remember specific highlights or lowlights, but on the whole we very much enjoyed almost everything. The first of the two scallop dishes was perhaps a little disappointing, and I really didn’t like the smoky ice cream that was served with the (otherwise delicious) cherry pie but I think that was pretty much it, everything else was very good. The wine flight was ok, although probably not worth the amount charged (are they ever?) but at least you could get top ups and you were advised how many courses each wine covered when it was served. Service was exemplary, but at the same time friendly and informal, not at all stuffy. Definitely worth a go as a once in a lifetime experience, and I’m very glad we got the chance before they close.

Expensive! Casamia has no choice but to be expensive. At full capacity, I believe 25 is the greatest number of guests Casamia can serve. Financially, they would not be able to survive without charging a hefty tariff. At lunch the day we were there (April 2022), 17 guests were in attendance. Anyone who chooses to have a meal at Casamia should VERY MUCH like the flavor profile and the aroma profile of smoke. Of the more than 20 dishes served (lunch lasted more than 3 hours), over half had noticeable elements of smoke coming mostly from an open wood-fired grill. The kitchen is open to the dining room by design, as are the workings of the somm staff. Everything is well choreographed and for me that is part of the problem. It is not choreographed in the way a classic 1970s Paris Michelin 3 star restaurant would have been. Rather, Casamia presents itself as a sort of “performance art meets haute cuisine”. Dark and brooding with graffiti-like walls, Casamia tries to put an ultra hip spin on what has already been done so brilliantly in the past at places like Alinea. If I had to guess, I would say we were in the minority of guests who found the experience cloying. Most guests seemed to be tapping their toes to the eclectic playlist of music and taking in the immersive video display that followed the beat of the music. I found it all very distracting. Unlike a place like Fat Duck where every little trick has a culinary foundation, there was very little of that here. The end product at great restaurants always seems to be greater than the sum of it’s parts. With the dishes at Casamia it seems as though each dish has the guest focusing on only one element, making it somewhat dull. If a restaurant is going to put out 20+ dishes, each dish better find a way to distinguish itself. Not happening at Casamia. Because there were so many courses, it was virtually guaranteed a few would miss the mark. However, in the case of Casamia, the dishes that hit the mark were the ones few in number. When it came to wine selection, we elected to let the sommelier do the work and so we went with the wine pairings at £240 for 2 people. This was a big mistake. We would have been much better off had we chosen 2 bottles of wine equaling £240, rather subjecting ourselves to the 7 wines chosen by the somm. At least then we would have gotten pleasure from what was in our glass, when there was precious little to be had with the wines the somm selected. In fact, the meal might have been better enjoyed had we been drinking beer or perhaps sake. Wine pairings at the many restaurants now serving multi-course, small plate menus have an intrinsically difficult time getting the wine selections right. This was certainly the case at Casamia. So, was there anything positive to take away from the experience at Casamia? Yes. The staff were very friendly and happy to answer our many questions. I asked several how long they had worked at the Casamia. All said they had been there 2 or more years, said it was a great team to work with and that they thoroughly enjoyed their time there. Despite the culinary disappointment, the staff kept things fun. Bottom line…if two people are going to spend £700 on lunch, the restaurant really needs to tick a few more boxes.

I’ve been waiting a long time to go for dinner at Casamia and I’m not totally sure how I felt about it. Firstly the booking was interesting, I’ve never received an email before to confirm the reservation and to advise I don’t have a drink before I arrive so I enjoy my experience, at 43 I’m not sure I needed this! The service was impeccable, the staff were attentive and very knowledgeable. We had a lovely table at the rear of the restaurant which gave us a view through to the kitchen. I thought the music was genius, kept it interesting and lively. Also loud enough to ensure you felt privacy at your table, without it I think I’d find just 6 other tables in the whole place quite intense. The first few courses were light and fresh. The trout with caviar was stunning. All little mouthfuls of joy. But there were then about 10 courses of fish and meat that were all very heavily seasoned with soy. By the end I felt slightly like I’d overdosed on umami, if that’s such a thing?! We both felt incredibly thirsty. I needed more vegetables and certainly something fresher, it felt it was slightly one dimensional. When I’ve look at the photos of these course they are all very brown and lacking colour. The desserts were interesting and the rhubarb one was particularly delicious. The total bill for two with one wine flight was about £550 which is a hefty bill. It was a fun concept, the service was great, loved the venue but the menu needs some tweaks in the meat and fish section re seasoning.

For my 30th birthday I wanted to experience a Michelin star meal my boyfriend gave me vouchers for Casamia and we were completely blown away. From our arrival to leaving the experience as a whole was brilliant, the music and ambience made the evening stand out so much. The food - well each course kept getting better and better! Just delicious! The kitchen team are amazing. We had the wine pairing which was very generous and complimented the courses perfectly. The som was very informative. The team serving us were all great, very friendly and again informative. We had the best evening and will hopefully be returning again someday. This restaurant is very chic and definitely my style.

In England visiting Bristol (home town) from Washington DC (New home town) and booked 2 seats at the bar for a drink and Apps prior to going to The Shop (see sep. review). Did not know what to expect and we were taken aback by the ambiance, setting, drinks, food, music etc. This a must for our next visit so that we can experience the entirety of the restaurants menu . This is a Bristol I did not know growing up and am glad I know now. We often eat at starred restaurants and this is unique. Joe looked after us and we thank him for the attention. We highly recommend Casamia. Casamia is a dining treat and the show and music only adds to it. We sampled a few Apps and they were amazing. The mushrooms were wonderful as was the tomato app/palate cleanser which was exceptional. The flavours and smells of the food are calling us back. In life, memories are what endure and exceptional food experiences tops our list. Looking forward to our next trip.

I’d been to Casamia twice before but this was my first visit since it’s revamp - black decor, music & video, and not least the installation of Zak Hinchman as Head Chef. I’d read the reviews and knew I was in for something quite different …the anticipation was in itself exciting. And Casamia definitely delivered. It has to have been the funkiest and most relaxed experience I’ve had at any Michelin restaurant, let alone actually any restaurant in the UK, and one which still delivered fabulous food. All the staff were engaging and friendly (although the male sommelier was, somewhat typically, harder work than the rest… but we wore him down eventually!) We had so many delicious servings… all packed with flavour and beautifully presented. We loved the smoky theme running through it all. Our flight of wines revealed some lovely novel choices, all delicious and all served with a real sense of generosity - with our glasses being eagerly topped up throughout the courses. The music is diverse and not so loud that it’s distracting… and I love the fact that Zak’s various playlists are provided through the QR code on the menu given at the end of the meal - I’ve been exploring those and finding some fabulous new music ever since. So Zak, Summer and the rest of the team at Casamia - thankyou for making us feel so welcome and for spoiling us rotten. We loved our experience and will be back!

I really like the ambience of this restaurant. Not only are the tables nicely positioned apart, but are af good size, and are quality without fuss. The staff are very professional but also friendly and good fun, which is what this restaurant is about, as well as a fine dining experience of course. The chef made a little speech at the beginning(everybody starts at the same time and is having the same thing). 20+ courses-blimey. But they are really not much more than a mouthful. Too many to describe and there was great variation. Generally they were of a Michelin Star standard. I enjoyed it tremendously. We had the wine pairing and this I was not so impressed with. Wines from all over the world might be fun, but not necessarily the most appropriate. I would of preferred some more traditional ones, particularly from France. It was all very expensive, of course. Too much so, outside of London, really. But I for one will definitely be returning.

I find it fascinating reading some recent reviews, as a tiny minority miss the whole point of this unique venue! You will see, after nearly 1500 reviews on trip advisor and now 93 michelin stars, I will try many gastronomic experiences. This is food theatre supplemented with mostly outstanding food. Their attention to detail just enhances the experience. Of all the amazing courses the mushroom one was frankly exceptional! The popcorn chicken course was nice, if a tiny bit dry, I have no criticism of any of the other of the 20+ courses! Staff are wonderfully attentive special mention to the curly haired guy. Chef started and finished this sensational experience. The lights the smell and the venue add extra atmosphere to the whole thing. The flavours were carefully developed, yes there is smoke (smoked ice cream was a new and amazing flavour) if you can’t taste the flavours I respectfully suggest a chippy or macdonalds as clearly you don’t have the palate for this! The pace is quite rapid but not too fast, all courses being explained. This is NOT by any stretch of the imagination a sedate altar to Michelin starred quiet perfection. This is a lively personality driven celebration of sound, film accompanied by the highest quality food presented by highly committed professional staff showing another side from traditional subdued dining. I am 65, not necessarily the expected “target” audience, but never mind I still put it in my top ten meals of all time Ps toilets very well presented too. This is not a cheap meal but you do get great value for your money. We travelled a round trip of nearly 340 miles was it worth it….. CATEGORICALLY YES!!

This was my fourth visit to Casamia and the first since the various lockdowns. As much as I wanted to like it, it definitely feels like it’s lost its way. The first issue is the decor. I don’t know why they decided to paint the entire interior black, but essentially it’s very hard to see anything and there’s a real health and safety risk when going to the bathroom. The next issue is the relentless, loud music. We were sitting in front of a 4’ bass cab. I couldn’t hear half of what my partner said and each time a chef brought a new dish over, I couldn’t hear the explanation of what it was. My partner suffers from tinnitus, noted one of the hostesses had earplugs in all evening, but when he asked if there were any for guests, he was told no and consequently left with ringing ears. The food was good, although very miso-heavy. There were also far fewer vegetable dishes than they’d previously had which was a shame as they used to do some incredible things with vegetables. There are now 20 courses, but no unifying theme; nothing brings the dishes together, and if the head chef is trying to bring it together with his music, it doesn’t seem to work. The service was good but not as outstanding as it used to be. It used to be the case that each time you visited the loo, it was spotless; the sink had been cleaned, the bin emptied and it was impeccable and your napkin neatly folded on your table for when you returned. This time it was clean, but the bin wasn’t emptied in between people’s visits and the sink had water marks on it. No hand cream anymore either. The hallway had bicycles in it and the overall ambience just isn’t the same. I can see that Casamia is seemingly aiming for the youth market - though I can’t see many young people having the money to pay £250 to £300 a head - through its music, graffiti, projectors, dress down staff. But it’s definitely gone downhill in my view and isn’t worth the hefty price tag. Can’t see that we’ll be coming back.

Let me start by saying that the wait staff were absolutely amazing! Service makes or breaks an evening for us, and in this instance they did not disappoint! The venue is very cool, we really enjoyed the light and music that accompanied the food and the atmosphere was really good. However, we paid £180 fixed price (pre service and drinks) in advance per head for the food. We left feeling really sad and disappointed. The main issue with the food was the onslaught of soy and miso in everything, savoury or sweet. My partner and I are massive foodies and we love Japanese and oriental cuisine, but after 20 courses we actually declined to eat some because the smell was just so overwhelming that we were no longer enjoying it. Each course in isolation was reasonable, but as a combined succession of mouthfuls, it was way too much for us. The lack of variation in the seasoning meant even though there was a massive variety of meats, vegetables and really interesting things it all ended up tasting the same. The final straw was the sweet things all tasting of soy too. Literally no let up or change in flavour for any course! We made our feelings known at the restaurant (by the way based on reactions we'd seen from others during the night, we were not the only ones with these feelings) and credit due to the wonderful wait staff, they were very understanding and confirmed it was not the first time they'd had this feedback. Now whilst we are foodies, I'm sure the chef will argue here that our pallets are not refined enough or that we weren't open enough to trying new things, perhaps this is true. However, I'll end the review with this. We LOVE food, we spend the vast majority of our spare cash on food, we are happy to pay over the odds for amazing experiences, we adore trying new places and different cuisines. We are your target market and we won't be coming back.

The place is very unusual and weird in the best way. We loved the simple black decor with wooden logs that were just underlining the smoked dishes that were served through the menu. The taste of food is incredible. It is very Asian influenced and the matching of all the flavours is just sensational. It is definitely an experience with food, the music is making you feel cozy and very privet, you feel like you the only one there enjoying the flow of time, which by the way is going really fast. No idea how the 4 hours passed so quickly, definitely some magic involved. Overall, this was nothing like what we expected, it was so, so much better. Very unique and cool place where you definitely don’t have to worry which fork to use.

Let’s just start by saying the food was good. Really good. There was a heavy lean towards smoked dishes which wasn’t to everyone’s liking at our table and was a little overpowering, but otherwise impressive overall. I’ve eaten here before a few times and was keen to come again. It’s always been such a great experience that we wanted to, despite the huge hike in price (and payment in advance). We started by arriving at the restaurant five minutes before the booking and we’re made to wait at a locked door, along with many other guests. We all questioned whether they were actually open. At 7pm they appeared and thought it was amusing to keep us guessing. We were shown to our table, but as everyone arrived together, we were left without service for some 10 minutes or so. The chef spoke to all of us and explained that he would be playing music to accompany the food and was there anything In particular we wanted to listen to? There were some requests, but as the evening progressed it was clear that that he was only playing what he wanted. The music was so loud from the get go, that it was difficult to hold a conversation across the table. Drake and Kayne at full volume, which seemed unsuitable for the venue. I felt that he was indulging himself and we were being forced to listen. It took over the whole evening. I think they were trying to create an ‘experience’ but it was dire. I much preferred the old CasaMia which centered on the food, not the experience. We paid over £1,000 for 4 people. There was £200 of wine, but with the fixed price menu cost and the extra service charge applied, it seemed a ridiculous amount for the evening, I felt that it was absolutely not worth it. Would I return? Not a chance. Shame. It was always my favourite restaurant in Bristol.
