Carter & Co. in Portsmouth

Came here for a Sunday roast to celebrate a 90th Birthday. Cannot fault the staff; they were so lovely and made a special effort for our celebration. The food itself was average. All our meals came at a different time, vegetables were essentially raw and most were cold. Yorkshires amazing! Desserts were OK- would definitely go for the sticky toffee again but the Eton mess was just some powdery cream with strawberries. The place is really nicely decorated and welcoming, just a bit let down on the food but this was just one experience.

Came here today for lunch, always wanted to try as looks delicious, looks definitely deceiving. 4 of us sat for lunch we had one carrot and one parsnip cut up and shared between us , stuffing burnt , cauliflower cheese was raw and the cheese sauce was like water and definitely didn’t taste of cheese, all veg raw, pork belly wasn’t crisp it was floppy and slimy the beef good god we like pink but this was so Rare could barely cut it . It was a real shame , the second cauliflower cheese arrived when the meal was almost over and the waiter did say when we said we don’t need it now that he’d take it off the bill but refused to take the other one off as we’d eaten it, a mouthful was eaten yes to know it was awful 🤢 really disappointed conduits £20 a plate x

Not a £20 roast or £100 meal for two. Really want this place to be good as the decor is beauts and selfishly it’s within walking distance to my house 😂 .. but it just isn’t .. time and time again. After a few times of trying, yesterday was our last attempt. Might have given it yet another go if the ‘Manager’ had offered a better excuse than “yeah the chef’s on his own today so he’s cooked over 100 roasts by himself” … 1. Stop accepting same-day bookings then ?! 2. You’d think they’d look better than this after 100 attempts 😆🙌

We went in for a Sunday roast at 3:30. Greeting was warm but that’s where it stopped, had to go to the bar to order drinks myself, menu was sparse hopefully focusing on the main event. No, food was cold and certainly not meeting the £20 pricing. Clearing my plate as I was hungry was a mistake but what else do you do at that time? Staff weren’t happy with our small but constructive complaint, excuses of the chef being on his own etc etc. I’m not sure how we’ll use the 20% off voucher as won’t be rushing back.

A decent venue for a decent meal. Really great staff. Not much more to say.

Came here for a friend’s meal. I can honestly say it was one of the worse meals I’ve ever eaten. Service was very very slow. Food definitely wasn’t worth the money that we paid. Had ….3 tiny little prawns for starters. Had steak for mains …. Which came out STONE COLD when I complained I got a frosty remark. They took the plate away and put it in the micro wave. When it eventually came back the player was red hot , my tomatoes were all shrivelled. Definitely won’t be going back.

Fantastic afternoon tea to celebrate a friend's retirement. Thank you to our wonderful waitress, Cece, who ensured we were well looked after.

We had a birthday meal here. The cocktails are fab and the food was good too! They have a patio garden too which is pretty with great planting and heating if it gets cold.

Interesting balance between a restaurant and a pub. Loved the Sunday roast here. Gives a local feel, but also great as a visitor :)

My go to restaurant for a roast dinner, we’ve been coming here for a couple of years now, they never disappoint! I do wish they’d do lamb though!

Inconvenient shower, and no soap to wash

Had a meal with my wife here. Felt that it was a bit over priced for the vegetarian meals that we ate. It was a nice experience but wasn’t the best for the amount of money 👍🏻

The room was clean, comfortable and well decorated, the only 2 things that stopped us giving 5 stars was no USB ports to charge phones and the walls between rooms are "paper thin". We had cocktails in the bar which were excellent and service was great!

Slightly overpriced for drinks. It took some time to get someone to serve us, and then the drinks came to us after quite a long wait. It's an okay venue but wouldn't really go back.

We had a meal last night there 2.3.24. We are on a weekend break away. Menu was quite limited and restricted. We asked for different sauce and no avocado or tomatoes. Removed all veg including broccoli.chips requested small portion two big chips and half a dozen others. Food for me steak nice but portion size of other items small. Feel could be so much better with a bit more variety on menu. Rather pricey for what offering. Good service but would not come back.

Such a lovely restaraunt. The atmosphere is just right for catching up with friends. The food was delicious, I had the salmon coconut curry, it was beautiful, the flavours were so yummy. The only reason why I wouldn't give full rating was due to desert. At 9:30 we were given a desert menu, the lady came back after about 5 minutes and we still hadn't decided so she said she would come back. No one came back to take our order, then when someone did come, we were told the kitchen was closed. We were a bit disappointed. However, as soon as I brought our disappointment to the manager, she reopened the kitchen and we got out tastes desserts. Thank you so much for this. We had a lovely evening, maybe in the future just give clients the heads up about what time the kitchen closes.

Only want in for drinks . Great service and great cocktails . Will definitely be going back to try the food.

Delicious Sunday roast as usual. Well worth a visit. Went with family and 7 year old granddaughter who enjoyed a lovely children's roast.

Sunday roast, I ordered the Cod but it was unavailable, so I had the chicken supreme, which turned out to be a chicken breast with the middle third removed, the Veg it came with included a cauliflower cheese the size of a ping pong ball. I'd asked the waitress and been assured that the portions are generous, don't believe it, a small meal hidden under an admittedly splendid Yorkshire Pudding. If you're hungry have a sandwich before you come.

Sunday lunch is good quality and the service is excellent they need some ale in the bar but very nice atmosphere.

We had a wonderful meal here in November. The food was well cooked and service was excellent. Would definitely return and recommend.

What a superb night, great food and service. Sean sings Elvis just made the whole night. I believe he's playing in February, make sure to book a table.

My 1st visit to the restaurant and it will not be my last. Great food, very good service and Steve Kingsley was the perfect host! The restaurant has a good atmosphere.On the day I went there was also live music that was a perfect accompaniment!.

Restaurant was empty, but they send us away ( on my birthday) because we havent got a booking. Beautyful restaurant with a very bad management and attitude!!!!

Popped in just to get a drink. Decor and exterior looked nice. We were told to take a seat in the bar area and someone would take our order..... this never happened. Waited a while and only one other table with people sat at it.... so we just left. Shame as it seemed nice inside.

I don’t write reviews often but this warranted one. The service was poor but the food was worse. Priced like a Michelin star restaurant but the reality is it’s just not good!!

The service, cocktails and food are absolutely incredible. The waiter fully engaged with us and spoke to us, none of this ordering over an app rubbish. Can't recommend this place enough. Will definitely be going back

Fantastic dinner with friends. Starter portions could have been a little bigger. The steak however was one of the best I've ever had. Only tip for improvement would be if they could answer the phone, I tried several times to get the Christmas menu, then requested it online but didn't get it it. Aside from that, perfect. Lovely decor too. Will definitely be back!

Not a great start. Tried to call multiple times to book a table (as you can't do a table of 8 online) and no answer, left a voicemail and nobody got back to me - however, looking at the recent comments on the service here, I think it might be a sign. Will book in somewhere else who actually bother to pick up the phone.

The Italian waiter who works Friday and Saturday was brilliant, so friendly.

We visited Carter & co for the 1st time with friends on a Saturday night and I can say with confidence that I will never go back. What looked like a quality eating place away from the chains, was actually very disappointing. I paid around £20 for a burger and 'chunky' chips, what I got was an overcooked burger - that was much small that the bun- cover in a tiny amount of melted cheese and a small limp piece of lettuce. The 'chunky' chips turned out to be overcooked 'fries'. Definitely not worth the £20. When I complained I was told they only cooked the burger 1 way (so I assume that everyone gets an overcooked burger - oh wait my wife had exactly the same). One of our friends had the fish, we she had to send back as it was so salty it tasted like it was still in the sea, it was so salty that it was hard to eat. Again we're told that this is the only way they cook it so couldn't offer a replacement. As well as service flat Prosecco, it all added up to a very poor, expensive experience. Would not recommend at all.

We visited Carter & Co for Sunday roast dinner recently. For what appears to be a premium menu the food served was poor. I don’t often write reviews but felt like it was necessary. Missing items on the roast included Cauliflower & Cheese, lack of gravy, no red cabbage. It seems like what it says on the menu is merely a suggestion of what you might get, if they have it. Otherwise tough luck. The meat was fatty, I had the beef. Yorkshire pudding was cold. Generally a poor experience and would not revisit. The price is okay, £20, but for that money I would expect all the items on the menu not 60% of them and meat that isn’t fatty. Nice venue, great staff. Just shame about the food.

Carter & Co is the best place to go in Portsmouth if you want delicious food, drinks that are made and served how they should be and also a great atmosphere. Popped in for the first time, 2 glasses of wine size M that looked like they were S cost us £17.45, outrageous price, not even this much in London. It’s Portsmouth and not even in that great an area od Portsmouth not Chelsea. Wouldn’t visit again complete rip off for a sub standard pub

food was OK. I’m vegan so we had the hummus and the tempura battered broccoli small plates to start, these were very good however both mine and my partners mains weren’t great considering the cost. He has some sort of fish and pasta dish, small amounts of fish and not much flavour to the pasta. I had the cauliflower burger, which was really just a bread-crumb coated slice of cauliflower in a store brought, not even toasted, bun. This came with a rather sad salad and a few skin on fries. I will say though the wine options here were excellent, including many vegan wines, and looking at the other reviews maybe we just chose the 2 worst main options. Service was very good, quick and friendly servers. Would maybe go back and try something different.

Food is really lovely, I've been twice recently and had some inconsistentsy over roat potatoes. First time not lovely, but second visit fantastic. Don't know if it depends how early you eat 🙂 The t bone steak sharer is very good value, lots of sides and the steak is huge. I had the garlic prawns which are also nice. The white chocolate mouse and date pudding were perfect. Service is good, the place itself is beautiful and unique within Southsea. Expensive but a nice treat, recommended!

We visited primarily to listen to Arif Jamal play the saxophone, sadly he was just there to sing and didn't have his sax (slightly misled by a member of staff when enquiring about times he was playing). We waited over an hour to find this out. Nevermind we will try to catch him at Dizzy's. Small plates good, cocktails very nice and buy-one-get-one-free. Interior beautiful. Just please be clear regarding entertainment as it was supposed to be a special evening out.

Meal's were amazing, staff friendly, thank you to the manager for helping me with glutenfree options, I said to her that all menu's should have gf on them as we have to be careful it's not a choice like (vegan / vegetarian they chose to be coeliac is for life. Had our Christmas greater family gathering on Sunday and the food and service was second to none. Very enjoyable experience all round hence the 5 stars! Highly recommend

From the Service to the meal, everything was perfect. It was 12 of us, so definitely not an easy table to handle but the staff were very well organized and gave us first class treatment- we were all impressed and already talking about our return!

Sunday dinner for 6. Food was excellent, we all had roast and different meats, i had pork belly which was great. Deserts all good. Bottle of wine good and fair price. Beer over priced which was only negative.
