The restaurant itself is accessible, providing you don’t need to use any facilities (toilets). If you’re in a wheelchair then you can forget it. After a lovely meal I needed to use the toilet before we left as we had a 40 min drive back home. But there was no disabled/accessible toilet. My partner highlighted this to the staff and the manager came. She asked me if I wanted to use the gents! She said she would block it off for me. For context I am a young women. It’s unsafe for me without using grabrails. I ended up having to travel half a mile away and use some dark and dingy disabled toilets up the road!

Attempted to eat at this restaurant two nights on the trot, told that they’d stopped serving one night and then visited earlier the following evening to be told there are not enough staff on duty. Difficult to understand places turning away customers.

What a wonderful and unique setting to have our meal sat in the railway carriage! Really feels like you could be on the Orient Express! Staff were so friendly, and there was a large selection of food on the menu, we all had different and all had delicious food which was very reasonably priced. Definitely worth a visit and would love to go back next time we are visiting the area.

Booked last minute for Monday evening, the restaurant is a large area with 2 mock carriages attached to the open plan area. They are tastefully decorated and clean. Monday happened to be steak night but plenty on the menu to suit all. I had the Brie starter which was a lovely portion size with salad and my partner had the chilli king prawns. Both cooked to perfection. Monday was steak night so had to partake however there is plenty on the menu for all. I had ribeye and my partner had fillet steak both served with homemade chips and side salad. We also got a portion of homemade onion rings which was enough for two. All cooked perfectly. The only downside was we arrived at opening time and it was very quiet so not much atmosphere. Could have done with some background music to lift the ambiance. Would definitely recommend this restaurant and would like to see it when it’s busy.

We booked the restaurant because of the carriage. We reserved a table inside the carriage which was as good as it looked on the photos. I ordered a fillet steak from the specials board, which was cooked to perfection. The whole tables food was excellent and very reasonably priced The staff were friendly The only downside would be the wait for the food was longer than I'd usually expect but at least it was worth the wait

Overall, the food that our family group ordered was very good, but one dish was extremely poor: the so-called pie, which was described as follows: "Steak & Ale Pie served with hand cut chips, seasonal greens and a rich jus". What the description failed to mention was that it was just a flaky pastry lid placed on top of essentially a steak gravy. The steak was very good, but a pie it was not. Pies, as far as I am concerned must have a pastry top and bottom (and the Oxford English Dictionary agrees). A pie is: "A baked dish of fruit, or meat and vegetables, typically with a top and base of pastry." You can see why restaurants offer such dishes, essentially a stew with pastry top, because they're much easier to make. Of course, restaurants have to make profit and over the last few years profits have been squeezed with the hike in energy prices and falling consumer confidence, but if you want your customers to keep coming back, don't try to pull the wool, or pastry, over our eyes.

What a great disappointment as this has been a favourite of ours. A family get together and the food was really not to the standards we have previously experienced or expect of Carriages. Two of the starters, the "creamy garlic mushrooms" were returned, even the staff indicating that "they don't look right" and offering us an alternative and the steaks were over-cooked, medium rare requested and well done received. Hopefully we will pluck up the courage to return again in the future.

Spotted this little gem, while travelling to the nearby reservoir. Little unsure about the quirky train carriage built inside to give the feeling of fine dining aboard something like the Orient Express, but it’s good fun, and probably helps attract more people than an ordinary pub would, so 10/10 for ingenuity, but I’m not sure it’s completely necessary as the star of the show was definitely the food. I had the sea food chowder, which came with garlic bread and fries, and it was spot on delish. Sea food bang on cooked, good thick creamy sauce, seasoned to perfection. Garlic bread was light and crunchy and not too heavy on the garlic. Fries were fresh, not frozen, always good to see, crisp with skin on and light and fluffy inside. My partners pie was good and tasty, although she is not a fan of courgette, and their was quite a bit on the plate, in fact, I think it was the whole courgette. Her sisters lasagne was great although it kept getting compared to a previous lasagne which was swimming in an orange sauce. Malteser’s cheese cake for dessert was just divine, to finish the night off.

Gem of a restaurant - well worth a visit if you are in the area of Hartington. Interesting theme - we chose to sit in the carriage (simulated old world British Railways dining car) and we enjoyed the experience very much. Food and service were excellent. We booked on the basis of a few good reviews, but found the place wanting. There was very little heating on, we were sat in the main carriage which was very nice, but it was so cold we couldn't take our jackets off all night. Our prawn cocktails were very nice, but the salmon mains were very dry & over cooked with super hard veg. We did tell the waitress (who was very nice) & she said she would pass it on to the chef, but as usual, we heard nothing else, no offer of a free drink or pud. We left straight after our mains as it was so cold by this point & on the way out, I told the waitress we wouldn't be returning. Basic kind of steak, burger & chips joint sadly.

I don't usually write negative reviews, as I understand that things can go wrong from time to time. But I have never come across an establishment more worthy of negative feedback, as this was by far the rudest experience I have ever experienced in a restaurant. We arrived, picked our table outside, and I went inside to collect some menus and select our cocktails. The waitress I spoke with initially was polite and helpful. She gave me the menus, and pointed out the cocktail menu on the wall. As we were on holiday we were very much looking forward to a bit of a treat, and looking at some of the reviews we thought we were in for exactly that. We decided what we would like to eat. When I went back inside to order I was asked where we were sitting, and then if we'd booked. We hadn't, and I was told that it was bookings only. I explained that we hadn't been told this, and given menus and been allowed to choose what we would like to eat. At which point the lady in charge over and said to the lady I was speaking with "She obviously didn't know it was booking only", and said absolutely nothing to me, no apology - nothing. I was obviously very surprised, especially as it was only around 6pm and just one table in the restaurant was occupied and two outside. Under the circumstances I think they were more than able to accommodate us. I spoke to the rather rude manager outside, and asked if it's booking only could we book then, to which she replied "By booking only, she means were fully booked" then she just walked off - yet again no apology. It must be nice to be able to turn business away, but there is no need to do it so rudely. Perhaps she should consider how she deals with people, and we certainly won't be returning as we do to a number of restaurants on one of our many holidays to the area.

There are many amazing places to eat in this area, sadly this isn't one of them. Food tasted stale, reheated and kept warm all evening (e.g. onion rings rock hard, stale burger bun) and took nearly an hour and a half to arrive from when we walked in. Served many people out of the order they arrived in, waitresses only seemed interested in talking to the regulars. Flies were everywhere, or perhaps the same 2 ones doing the rounds, partly as tables not being cleared for over 2 hours sometimes. Chefs were outside smoking in their aprons. Not the sort of place for couples, caters for large groups of people with deals on 2 meals and a bottle of wine, so a very noisy place with tables all very close together. Food nothing like the photos sadly.

First time back at this restaurant for a couple of years, it was our favourite and never failed us in every aspect. However this weekend we went in the storms. I asked to put my umbrella somewhere so to not drench the restaurant, the young dark haired girl replied she didnt know and then turned away. We then had starters and asked for serviettes, the same girl asked what they were! Seriously! I explained what they are and still didn’t get any. Something you do actually need when eating food with cheese fat dripping everywhere! Mains came and 2 we’re definitely edible but nothing special, the platter was appalling. £11.50 for 9 crackers and some bits of cheese The chutney was requested twice and finally arrived. It was awful. I left the platter. We were charged for face masks £1 each. I don’t mind paying but they don’t cost that. When asked for the bill, the same young girl came with card machine (no bill) we asked if we could pay by cash and she said I don’t know! Then looked at us and the card machine again. Huge lesson , if you don’t know something then that’s absolutely fine, but go and ask! We wouldn’t return based on the service and food standards. Shame The restaurant was bright light and clean but that’s all I can say that’s positive.

So we visited recently after inviting our friends to our Holiday home. I’d seen the reviews and looked forward to a meal at the Carriages.Having been given a few days to think out the visit I’m still not sure overall what to think. The food is nice, a good standard. In relation to the staff however they appeared very inexperienced and clearly hadn’t had much if any training. When our starters arrived they were all plonked at one end of the table leaving us to figure out who’s was who’s and us passing the plates around. When the mains arrived we think his chowder was a starter as it came with a portion chips.Sadly during the meal two dogs with separate families played an hour long game of bark tennis which was frustratingly as the staff didn’t appear to try and deal with it.When the plates were cleared away the young girl took my wife’s full glass of drink and had to hand it back. She then asked is if we wanted to take the unused sachets of salt & pepper home with us!!Lastly when the bill arrived we had been charged for a Diet Coke and pint of carling even though we were drinking pints of Madri. Overall nice meal but still not sure if we’ll ever return.

We found this fabulous restaurant while staying at Rivendale Lodge Retreat in the Peak District. After messaging them on Facebook, we had an instant reply and dined that evening. The restaurant is designed as two railway carriages, with individual dining pods. Very unique. As we had our dog with us, we were sat in the main area, which was warm and welcoming. Everything is COVID secure. The food was incredible. We had the belly pork, burger and lasagne. We enjoyed it here so much that we booked to go again the following evening. This time we had steak, which was cooked to perfection with a Stilton sauce, lamb & mint pie, burger and seafood chowder. Again the quality was fantastic. I can’t recommend this place enough. 5 star food, service and atmosphere.

We just visited for our anniversary dinner and am really pleasantly to surprised by the great food here. We initially came for the decor which is both fun and elegant. We Each course was beautifully presented, the fish dishes fresh, delicately seasoned but hearty enough for a cold autumn night (seafood chowder was amazing!), salads were mega fresh too and beautifully dressed... staff all very friendly and welcoming, can’t wait to come back next time we stay in the area!!

We were staying in the area and only found this restaurant on our last night. A shame otherwise we would have visited twice. The menu was very varied and interesting. The inside is done out as Pullman type railway carriages so it also has the advantage of being unusual in terms of decor. Reasonably priced and various deals to be had depending on the day. Loved it!

We were staying local and booked this based on reviews and proximity, I didnt realise we would be dining in a converted carriage (me overlooking and checking to see there were options my partner would like) so this was an amazing surprise when we arrivedThe setting is perfect and eating in the carriage was excellent, super quirky and a definite talking point, I sent my grandad all the photos and he thought it was marvellous so definitely another visit due!Staff were friendly and attentive, covid rules adhered to and track and trace managed by theirselves.Food was amazing, we have three courses and could not fault a thing!! The steak burger my partner had he hasn’t stopped talking about! The savoury bread and butter pudding was excellent!!Excellent service, excellent food and excellent setting, we can’t wait to come back. Thank you!!

Table was booked ahead & we were seated at 6.30pm, waitress said "I'll give you a couple of mins then get you some drinks" 20 mins later I went & got my own, my wife went to ask about food at 7pm. Waitress finally arrived about 5 mins later, because of the delay we decided not to have any starters & ordered our mains. A while later I got us more drinks, finally at about 7.40 a waitress asked "can I get you any more drinks?" We said "No thanks but we would like our food" The food arrived at 7.55pm. No apology for the delay! This was a Tuesday night, not overly busy! Badly need to sort out the kitchen. The food, when we got it was very nice but just the service was too slow. Other people were sat looking around, not happy about the wait. Sorry we will not go back!

Following a very good meal previously we returned to Carriages to benefit from their continued discount strategy, 25% off food on Mondays to Thursdays throughout October 2020. The menu has a good range and there are a number of daily "specials". Service is excellent and the quality of the food is very good, as are the beers and wines.A place we hope to return to again.

Quirky decor. Lovely food good choice on menu. Service very good. We were close to the bar and customer kept going to the bar which was slightly uncomfortable in these covid times, I did here the barman tell someone to sit down but would prefer if the staff were strict on this point.

We went here one evening as we saw they were extending their eat out to help out into September. The starters were very good, deep fried brie, but quite large portions. The main courses, burger and steak, were okay but the meat was quite dry and there wasn't a wow factor about it, just okay. The desserts, carriages Eton mess, was very good though. And good value at 50% off, overall not too bad but their mains let them down a bit. Staff all friendly and welcoming, and the restaurant itself is very clever and interesting as it's set out like train station and carriages etc with all the decor to match, very unusual.

Visited for an evening meal with using the Eat out to help out offer and was not disappointed. The restaurant was very busy but the management have thought through and put into place good strategies to deal with keeping people safe. The food was hot and clearly freshly perpared, the portions were good and the staff very friendly and helpful. The only thing that we would question, as others have, is that the bill was not fully itemised and there was no indication of the costs of the "specials" that we were informed of at the table. Pleaseant evening and a place we hope to return to.

Went as a family of 5, all ordered different things, starter was good, every main course was covered in whatever sauce that came with the meal, these should have been served seperately, none of the 5 of us ate half of our meals. Bill was not itemisedsteak served with just chips and an onion ring - no mushrooms, tomatoes or garnishes and no sauces offeredAre fairly local but would definitely not be going back for a repeat

Went for a meal here as a group of 22 people (we were staying at the campsite across the road) the staff were so accommodating and the food was lovely. I had the seabass which was cooked to perfection and the Eaton mess. Would definitely recommend this place. It’s very quirky with the train carriages and memorabilia dotted around. Thanks for looking after us so well!

We were staying at the campsite just across the road from this place when we decided to eat out one evening. Having read previous good reviews, we booked a table in the afternoon and later walked across to enjoy an evening meal. England were in the middle of a heatwave at the time & so at no fault of the restaurant, it was very warm inside. Just beware during warm weather! The restaurant is set up inside like a train carriage, which gave the place a real usp & a bit of character. They just need more windows to let some air in The staff were very friendly & during the time of Covid we felt very safe, being welcomed on arrival by a member of staff & a hand sanitising station. The menu had a good selection, but we chose two seafood dishes-a seafood chowder, & a monkfish curry-and could not fault the food at all! The time it took to arrive indicated it had been freshly made. It was absolutely delicious & if passing again would def stop to eat here again. Would def recommend if in this area, just may be a bit more enjoyable during the winter!

Excellent food and the staff are soooooo nice. This place has a look and and feel of a old railway station with the tables in an old carriage. But for all the great visuals its the staff and the food that are the star...

Whilst I cannot fault the quality of the food, the lack of toilet facilities causes me a major problem. Previously when we have visited here we were able to use the toilets belonging to the pub next door. Having mobility problems and on medication , I politely asked if it would be possible to use the staff WC. This was refused and I was told to use the public toilets which were a considerable distance away. It took me a very painful 25 minute walk to go there and back.I am 85 years old, leaning heavily on a walking stick . I feel very disappointed as i have visited this fish shop many times in the past.

Really lovely food, you wouldn't know it from the outside/inside - it's like any other pub but the food was really good. Had the best dessert - rice pudding with apple and nuts - to die for.

We went for Sunday lunch and it was probably the best I've had, the meat melted in your mouth and the veg was brilliant with meaty gravy

Arrived around 10:45 am on 10/11/24 only to be informed that there was no hot food being served until 11:15 due to a take away order. Others in front of us left and we reluctantly ordered two coffees, a flapjack and a Pork Pie instead of the full cooked breakfasts we’d hoped for. We were charged twice for the Pork Pie, which we pointed out and were subsequently refunded for. We sat at a table that had the previous occupants breakfast plate on it (which was never cleared, considering the waiting on staff weren’t serving any food at the time) and waited for our coffee which did not arrive. We fetched it ourselves from the counter, at which point around 11:05, they started taking breakfast orders again. The place seemed poorly managed and why you’d turn away valued customers for a take away order is beyond me.
