It's Closed. Apparently the Owner left the country

I presume it has closed down. I booked a table on the Friday for our anniversary the following Wednesday. When we arrived it was in darkness and locked up. A gentleman walking by said it had closed. It would have been nice to hear from them to tell me not to come.

Great food and service every time 👌

Went for mid week tea, food was superb (Steak Pie) three of us ate every last bit and then had a cheesecake dessert. Lovely little place with a friendly atmosphere both inside and outside. Will definitely return.

Disappointing! After reading so many positive reviews I was disappointed. The menu offered much more than it delivered both in variety and quality. I was in a party of nine on a pleasant June evening and we opted to sit outside. The tables were grubby and no attempt made to wipe them clean before we ate. I opted for the tapas selection , but even though I didn’t want a big meal , I found the portions very undersized and lacking flavour. One of our party ordered a hot roast sandwich which turned out to be Turkey. It had a strange taste and smell so after one bite it was sent back. She was offered an alternative , no apology, and then we were told she would have to pay an extra amount because there was a price difference. We were advised by staff that you can’t swap a meal and not expect to pay for it!!! We refused to pay the difference. The warm friendly staff must have all had the night off when we were there.!

Following a challenging walk we were looking for a late lunch and found this establishment open. We each had goats cheese pasta with walnuts which was excellent. The food was very plentiful, hot and well presented. Excellent staff and service.

The Carpenters Arms is a hidden gem in Ossett. While its unassuming exterior might not catch your eye, the interior is where the magic happens. The service is exceptional, and the food is undeniably tasty. Don't judge this book by its cover; step inside and experience it for yourself!

Came for Sunday lunch. Sunday roast, not the best, but not the worse we've had Desserts was very good For this meal... Average Would definately come back for the a la carte

One of the best experiences I have had in a long time .What a gem this place is its cozy the staff are extremely well coming friendly and helpful . The food was exceptional very well presented and delicious The reasonably priced cocktails were lovely too I will return very soon

Great spot for some drinks inside or out, but would recommend trying the menu at least once. The food is a good balance of traditional and modern.

Had a meal there on Sunday and the steak & ale pie filling was nice but the pastry and the chips were very salty. Salty to the extent that we could not eat all the chips provided.

It was our first ever visit to this restaurant and I’ve seen some negative reviews on here, but let me tell you honestly it was without fault, the food was delicious and the service as excellent! We’ll have no qualms about dining here again, well done!

I went here in a group of 5. The food was sensational. I had the Swordfish starter which was absolutely beautiful! Cooked to perfection. I continued with fish to the main course and enjoyed a lovely pub classic of fish and chunky chips, what a delight that was! I adored the chips. The staff at the bistro provided exceptional service, displaying genuine warmth and attentiveness throughout our visit. Their friendly demeanor and prompt assistance added a delightful touch to the overall dining experience The bistro had a charming atmosphere, with soft ambient lighting and cozy decor that invited a sense of warmth. The menu, overall is slightly on the pricey side, however as they offer a set menu on certain nights we were able to take full advantage of this. Having 2 beautifully cooked courses for £17.95. Which in my eyes, was an absolute bargain for the quality of the food and service. In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend the bistro for its outstanding combination of a charming atmosphere, impeccable service, and, above all, the exceptional cuisine.

Took over an hour and a half to get food. Ordered a chicken burger with pulled pork and cheese. Came without the pork and cheese. Sent it back. Got it back again 10mins later. The chicken batter was both burnt and soggy. The chicken was overdone. The whole thing was bland and flavourless. A frozen birdseye chicken breast for £1 tastes better. Other food in our group was burnt. They burnt battered fish. And even burnt sweet corn. Dreadful food. Bland, flavourless and dreadful. Really regret eating here. Wouldn’t go ever again.

What a Christmas dinner! First year in a long time we decided to treat ourselves to a Christmas day off. Five of us headed to The Carpenter's Arms aka Bar 42 and settled into some cocktails while we waited for our table. Half an hour later we headed upstairs and sat down to a beautifully laid table with tasty little appetizers. Then along came the soup and starters brought to us by super friendly and polite staff. By this point we were wondering if it could get any better. A small wait and all five plates turned up together piping hot, which in itself was a testament to the service. The food was second to none, out of place in a tiny little town, we were wondering how high end restaurant food ended up on our plates. It tasted so much better than it looked and we were all struggling to finish it, but we tried. Finally an amazing dessert turned up and we had to be rolled out of the door we were that full. The staff throughout we're beyond professional, polite, friendly and attentive. Will our waiter kept the drinks coming, recommended some good cocktails and made sure we wanted nothing. Next year, definitely more of the same please! We can't wait to go back.

A surprisingly, nice pub, with great looking food, and a good selection of cocktails. Staff with friendly, and the place was clean and welcoming. I’d highly recommend a visit here.

Very nice Sunday dinner. Yorkshires were a little dry for our tastes but everything else was very nice. Attentive and polite staff. Very nice decor and atmosphere. We shall definitely return at some point soon

Just popped in for hot drink, needed warming up and it did the trick. It was tasty, with little biscuit and chocolate on side nice little touch.

Drinks, service and most importantly food are exceptional. Beers and ales on draft are fantastic, cocktail menu is fleshed out and caters to anyone taking a seat Food rivals that of the top places in Leeds, apart from prices which are very reasonable. Presentation and considered components on the plate really show how much they care about what goes into their menu, strongly recommended this establishment as its leagues above anywhere else in the local area of Ossett.

Very lovely staff who provided quick and friendly service. The food was also very tasty however I'd recommend that you order from the main menu rather than the set one as although it's cheaper, the portions aren't as generous. My friend ordered chicken skewers and chunky chips which she Very much enjoyed so I don't doubt the quality of the food. Very quirky and creative decor of the place and the atmosphere was very pleasant too. Thank you to the carpenters arms we will be back 😁

Had the best fish and chips for ages.

Food is amazing. Extremely accommodating for any dietary requirements as everything is fresh, locally sourced products. Wife is gluten free and pretty much everything on menu is fine for her due to been freshly prepared. Reasonably priced. Excellent, friendly service. Thank you

Gluten free! Amazing from start to finish. Waiter knew what he was talking about, even got me gluten free cheesecake for today when I visited for the 3rd time since the new chef took over. Fresh food cooked on the day! Made tonorder and can cater anything gluten free except pasta! Food was amazing and felt well catered for. Nothing was a problem especially my gluten intolerance. So hope they start doing taster menus that would be awesome!

Poor experience. The Food came out cold. Prawns were at the best luke warm. The onion rings were freezing inside. Presentation was great. But the fact the food was cold meant we had to send it all back. Would not return

Saturday night dinner with family. Great service, fast & friendly. Really tasty ale on tap, food was fresh and tasty. Great atmosphere and heresy value.

Nice drinks but the food fell well short of expectations. Belly pork without crispy skin, almost dry but covered in a sauce that had been reduced too far, black and tasted burnt

A great meeting place with great food with great atmosphere

Went with my son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter and my daughter-in-law's parents. Had a very nice Sunday dinner. Excellent selection of veggies tho broccoli a bit too aldente. Good service and lovely desserts.

I visited this place a couple of months ago and was suprised how good the food was. Staff were friendly

Was okay, portion sizes were quite varied. Amount of fries which came with the burger was somewhat on the smaller side, and as for the price, I think I've had a similar burger at a Greene King for half the price, more fries would probably make up for the price. Service was brilliant, atmosphere was fine, was sat near the kitchen which was nice to see but was sometimes quite loud. Overall okay and would go again if it was cheaper maybe.

Went here with the family, had a couple of cocktails which were lovely. However, the food was bang average, I had a burger and it didn’t taste of anything and my partner had the skewers and at nothing but the chips that came with it. Tasted of nothing. I would recommend coming for a few drinks but certainly not the food!

My partners meal was good .mine was good just felt it was so small that I was still hungry afterwards .the food was good quality and service was great.

Really gone downhill over the years. Food used to be decent but today was the final straw. Wife ordered a club sandwich and this was it. They did bring her another but that's not the point, shouldn't have to complain, should be right in the first place. Chef should be ashamed. Had better sandwiches out of a clear plastic box from a garage Update on my original review 7th May 23. Heard good things again about 42 so decided to give it another go for Sunday dinner. Well it was superb. Food was great and really good value for money especially in the current climate. Got the Sunday dinner with a starter for £17.95 and was really impressed. Nachos for starter, yes I know not your usual starter for a Sunday roast but they were spot on and a decent portion. Sunday roast was also really good. Highly recommended. 1 star previously now giving it 5. 👍🏼

Food was plentiful, hot and tasty. Some of the best roast potatoes I've ever had in a pub style restaurant (crispy, without the sweaty taste of pre-cooked roasts) tangentially removed from the bar, so it was much more relaxed than most pub eateries, closer to a bistro or carvery. Noise levels surprisingly and welcomingly muted, too. Food didn't have the frozen TV dinner/boil in the bag flavour like most pubs and cheaper hotels, so either they had a cracking supplier, or it was all fresh. It tasted fresh to me, with very flavoursome roast beef (masses of it). Yorkshire pudding was tasty, maybe the only thing that might have come frozen, but better than most. Vegetables were also plentiful, the plate really was well stacked. My wife and I are light eaters, so the option of smaller portions (even if it's the same price, because the meal was incredibly cheap) would have made us feel better, because we don't like wasting food. Creme brulé was delicious, strangely served with cream or vanilla ice cream (which had a kind of quality Mr Whippy flavour to it). The bread and butter pudding was like someone had poured the creme brulé mixture over breadcrumbs. No raisins, not a single one. So it was surprisingly bland. We asked the waitress about some of these issues, including portion size and whether we could have less but didn't mind paying the same and why the pudding didn't contain any raisins, and she was clueless. She didn't know what the portion sizes were, what exactly came with the Sunday dinner, nor why the pudding had no raisins. We weren't wanting a refund, we were just curious to know whether it had been a mistake or was deliberate. She promised to ask about giving us smaller portions and ask about the lack of raisins, but she did neither. She was so vague, she seemed three quarters asleep. Her lack of knowledge of the meal, her inattentiveness and her laziness were the only sour points. It's a shame, because otherwise they would have scored much higher. Maybe the other waitress was more professional, we don't know. Payment was quick and easy and we were so impressed, on the whole, that we would go again and highly recommend it.

Do not order the Thai fish cake - all potato and no fish, gave my concerns to the staff and they said the chef showed him the fish and there was definitely “a few flakes of fish in there” sorry no fish and definitely no Thai flavours! Avoid! Ordered the mixed fajitas steak and prawns - nice but there was also chicken in there I didn’t want chicken but got it anyway, they weren’t bothered just said they had a new chef and he was putting his own mark on the menu? Yes I agree but not for the best! Avoid!

Booked here for Xmas dinner for the family. 4 adults, 1 child. The menu was pretty poor, I would have expected a traditional Xmas dinner to at least be part of the menu but sadly not. We booked anyway and I will say the food was garbage. All 4 of us barely ate anything, our grandson (5) only ate 2 slices of dry bread and a little bit of ice cream. Menu was all fancy stuff but was very poorly executed. Nothing was cooked properly, the meat could have been brought back to life by a good vet. Many items were raw and uncooked. Will not be going again. Thanks for ruining our Xmas dinner. The price was extortionate for what was served. Don't waste your money.

Booked the Christmas Party Menu for 7 at £24:99pp, and was expecting the usual sub standard meals you normally get with bookings like this, I was so wrong! The Starters, Mains and Desserts were of such a high standard, the staff were very welcoming and attentive, and the Cocktails…. Wow! Thank you 42 for an amazing evening, anyone thinking of a “festive do” this is the place.

We had 3 beautiful meals, we only booked half hour before (by phone) the restaurant is very nice and clean/cosy with upstairs seating, the lower floor was fully booked after we were seated, our meals didn't take long after putting our order in, staff very friendly and chatty

It seems a great place to have a drink inside or in the outside seating area. The atmosphere was nice, chilled and friendly. Great place to have a drink before I was watching a play at a local Venu. I can't comment on the food as I didn't order anything.

Pleasant place. The menu may seem simple at first glance, but contains a good number of exciting dishes.

Really nice place and excellent service. Down side was the steak n ale pie. Pastry was well overdone, outer edge was almost black and would not cut, only able to break it up and sadly leave it on the plate. On menu described as coming with chunky chips OR seasonl veg so i got the veg and a side order of french fries but it arrived with new potatoes AND the french fries , too much.

Enjoyed the food, The chicken burger was spot on, it didn't fall apart while eating it. Plenty to dig into. The chips/wedges were huge and great to dip. However the Menu is limited in comparison how it used to be and there is no free starter through the week like it used to be. Also the prices are more towards the expensive side of the spectrum. Service was decent couldn't complain, It was clean inside. I would advise checking the menu before going in if possible though as there really wasn't much choice

The sharing platter is a thing of beauty, share between two or three with a real ale or one of their many other drinks. Highly rate for a lunch date in the sun

Nice food tasty was warm when came pie was tasty but slightly cold in middle but tasty fat chips was nice home made coleslaw was great .Well what a few months difference in food got a chicken wrap was bland way too much ranch sauce on as u can see had to squish out made me feel iffy I did think it wouldof had salad inside the decor had cobwebs on an dust an got fetched a dirty spoon 😳 for condiments

Overall pretty good main of steak was very nicely done dessert was amazing. But the starter was just ok could use a little more taste to the spaghetti but the meat balls were amazing.

Arrived on Saturday without booking with a party of 6 to be told no tables available by staff after asking if we could have a drink and wait another member of staff said there is room upstairs so guess the other member of staff couldn’t be bothered going upstairs (owner should be very proud off staff) When we sat down the waitress walk over whilst wiping the inside of her mouth with her fingers !!!!! When the food arrived a member of the part asked for mayonnaise the look the waitress gave was disgusting. There are lovely places in Ossett avoid this place like the plaque we won’t be returning.
