Carlo's in Northumberland

We really fancied a fish and chip lunch during our visit to Alnwick but didn't know of anywhere to get any - then we came across Carlos. We both had the meals that came with a 'side' (how American is that?), bread & butter and a drink. Every aspect was brilliant - thin tasty batter, plump fish, (homemade?) tartar sauce and gorgeous chips. The mushy peas were mega too. Unusually the bread was from a Tiger loaf which really went with the food. The food came to the table piping hot and stayed hot to the end. A fresh slice of lemon too. The tea was a bit strong for our liking but it's better than being wishy washy I suppose. We eat fish & chips fairly regularly and these were among the best. Highly recommended.

A huge portion of fish and chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce, lemon, tea, bread and butter. Filled me up for the day. Whale and chips!!

The best fish and chips we have had! Puts other fish and chip shops that we have been to in the shade! So good we returned the next day!

The fish was delicious as usual. However, the chips were very bitty. Mainly short pointy potato ends. They were nowhere near as nice as they usually are.

Visited here when staying for a few days. Excellent fish and chips. Also an excellent scotch pie, mushy peas and curry sauce. All fresh and tasty. Highly recommended.

Went here for our evening meal on a short break. The fish and chips are some of the best I’ve ever had, they were fresh and crispy and the chips were chunky and homemade. Tip- if eating in, order your food and go sit upstairs where it’s quiet. Unless you’re a massive eater, the small fish and chip special(£13.50), will easily fill you up. You get fish and chips, choice of peas, curry, or gravy, or beans I think! Plus bread and butter and tea or coffee. The fish and chip special at £17.00 is the same, except it’s a huge fish and lots more chips, same deal as the small special, come with choice of sides and drink and bread and butter. I would recommend to anyone, absolutely gorgeous fish and chips, you won’t be disappointed!

delicious! we had cod and chips but there was a wide ranging menu with a few veggie options. the service was prompt and polite and the prices reasonable. a great way to end a days hiking!!!

Returned after food had dipped, but back to being tasty again, I do wish that "proper" mushy please could be on the menu, rather than the "tin type", but other than that Fish and chips were very nice! Recommend the curry sauce.

We always come here for our fish and chip tea when we come to Northumberland. The staff are friendly and the little restaurant can get busy so if you're going at a traditional meal time, I'd book it. The fish is cooked to order and a small (it's quite big) one, chips, Mushy peas, curry sauce or gravy, bread and butter and cup of tea or coffee is £13.95 to eat in.

Stopped in chilled after touring the castle. The hot fresh fish & chips made our stop in Alnwick! The small portion is huge & comes with chips (fries), hot or cold beverage & a side. We each got a different one. Gravy, curry & peas were a hit. Didn’t care too much for baked beans. Gelato was a sweet treat to finish.

Genuinely the best cod I have ever eaten. The shop was packed. But we got served in a decent time. Emma and Sarah are a real credit to the company. The chips were outstanding. We will be back!

I have eaten F&C’s for 70 years and never tasted them as good as at Carlo’s. The batter brilliant the fish as fresh as fresh and the chips and mushy peas just added to the experience of having them brought to you in the restaurant. First class. Withe gelato to finish a real treat. Thank you.

I had the scampi and chips with the home made tartar sauce. Lovely. Would recommend and you get good portions. Price reasonable.

Having a love of ice cream and having eaten a LOT of ice cream I have to say this is absolutely superb. So far I have had the vanilla, strawberry, raspberry ripple and the banoffee. All beautifully smooth and with an excellent balance of flavours. This is as good as it gets.

We are in love with the Haddock! We all would come back from the other side of the globe just to enjoy Carlo's specifically and the over all atmosphere the people and businesses of Alnwick offers. Our giant filet of Cod and Haddock, no chippy, were about 20 lbs but the 3 of us were actually considered canceling our dinner reservation because we didn't think we could eat again for the next 90 minutes.

Went here for fish and chips twice whilst visiting the area and both times they were queueing out the door! Good options on the menu with lovely fresh fish at the top of the list. Everything is cooked fresh to order, portions are generous (share a portion of chips between two unless you are very hungry). Staff seemed friendly with perhaps 10 of them being kept busy busy the big customer demand from takeaway and on site dining. Highly recmmended and we will certainly be back whenever we are in the area.

Most excellent fish fry I have ever had. Staff super nice ! This can be crowded but there is seating upstairs and the food is amazing !!! Highly recommend! We split the large fish fry between two adults and it was delish! Great fries too ! You won’t be disappointed !

I had a great experience at Carlo's fish and chips. The restaurant has loads of sitting space, which helps when visiting with kids. After ordering a large fish and chips I couldn't believe my eyes when 2 portions of fish arrived on my plate. First I doubted myself if I could even finish it but because the quality of food was so great, not a single chip was spared. I would highly recommend this place.

I was in Alnwick on a rainy day and I was also desperate for proper fish and chips. I googled it and found Carlo's. Luckily they have a few tables you can eat at and I managed to get one as I didn't want to eat outside. The special was fantastic, freshly cooked so piping hot, and it came with your choice of peas, curry, gravy, beans, bread and butter, and a drink. The hot tea was very much needed but you can have a cold drink. Reasonably priced for a tourist town and the staff were lovely. I was on my own but I didn't feel awkward at all.

. . . we called in for a treat, to eat in and order take-outs for friends; nothing was too much trouble. We were invited to take a table and they looked after us with friendly table service, delicious battered fish and lots of vinegar and tartare. The fish came with slices of fresh lemon; we didn't need to ask for anything as they covered it. A clean, well run establishment which I thoroughly recommend.

Came here to get an ice cream as it was a lovely day. Queue was out the door but still got served quickly and staff were friendly despite how busy it was. Got the raspberry ripple ice cream in a cone with a flake - nicest ice cream I've ever had! Already recommended to many people, will definitely be back.

It was getting late and we needed to eat so fish and chips fit the bill . This was local and TripAdvisor rated the best . A decent chip shop shouldn’t disappoint and this one was good . Nice chips and good portion of fish with a light batter . We had bought a lemon ourselves which added to the flavor . Not sure why chip shops in the UK don’t offer a piece of lemon like in NZ - it really helps .

One word. RUDE. So so awful. Me and boyfriend went to get dinner at this restaurant as take away. We walked in and straight away we were made so extremely uncomfortable. We are out of towners walking into this place was insanely awkard. The staff were hostile and judgmental, we were stood looking at the menu board holding absolutely no que and before we know it we are being hounded to order. Being sighed at by the staff behind the counter after entering the shop for only 2 minutes. The lady behind the counter asked us in a aggressive manner “do you know what you want” and the lady serving ice cream butted in and said “no they don’t” in a manor that made us feel ganged up on. Other customers noticed the hostile and rude environment and attitude from the staff.

Brilliant food but the mushy peas were cold and I will be back hope you get the most amazing vews lovely se you soon thanks.

Stopped by to try the fish n chips after a day out. The cod was exceptional, no bones, white and flakey, just so fresh. Great end to the day!

Best food for miles around great service grate place

Two weeks ago I waited in a very long queue then bought cod and chips. They were excellent. Went back last week for the same again. Sadly, after waiting in a queue, I saw the girl serving had a glove on with an elastic band round her wrist. Most of these elastic bands contain latex. I am allergic to latex. I had to ask for my money back. I don't think that in this day and age, when so many people are allergic to latex, that it should be used in a hot food shop. It can be dangerous for some people. I went home very disappointed and very hungry. As far as I know this is the only tradition fish and chip shop in Alnwick now.

Nice chips a little expensive I thought as did other but can't fault the chips

Went last night and I can say I wasn't really impressed overall. The chips were nice and as was the gravy, but the tub was just thrown in the bag upside down. Ordered fish and chips- got given just the cod not the chips. (It was too late to go back by the time we opened the bag). Luckily grandmother managed to share some chips from someone else in our family. The atmosphere was very tense and the staff seemed very miserable. Only one of the staff seemed nice- the lady with the colourful hair who was doing the gelato. The tartar sauce was a disgusting mess- it tasted okay at the top of the tub but was awful underneath. Blatantly scammed a foreign couple near us that ordered fish and chips and a cheese savoury- charged them over £22 when I worked out that they should have been charged roughly £15. The children's prices were obscene as were the options. Would not go back here because of the tense atmosphere, the prices and the blatant scamming of people. Which is a shame as the chips and gravy were nice.

I got take away Fish & chips , so can't vouch for atmosphere in the review , but sat in Market Square. Absolutely Delicious Cod & Chips and loads of it .Stuffed & happy. Was really busy but I was served in good time. Excellent & recommended.

We have a takeaway from here of 2 large cod and 2 chips. The cod was lovely and fresh, cooked to perfection! The chips were also very good. Only slight issue was I wouldn't say the cod wasn't large more on the small side and their wasn't many chips either. I guess im used to ordering a small chips at the chip shop and still getting a fair amount but they're definitely small here 🙃 £9.20 for the cod, £2.50 for the chips, we would return as everything was so tasty.

Arrived at about 4.30 and was empty ..fish was superb, prob the best .Chips were so so , and mushy peas terrible ..expensive meal , but there again fish and chips are not cheap anymore ...staff member was chewing gum while serving which didn't impress me !!

Prompt service even on a busy Tuesday evening with fish cooked to order. Both haddock and cod delicious and the chips tasty, crispy and not at all greasy.

I've came here a few times now since moving up to Alnwick way and it's by far the best fish and chips in town. It is always busy inside and staff look like they are working hard but are happy to help. Always look forward to my next one so will no doubt be there soon.

I was surprised by how good the batter was! Probably the best I've tried. Tried cod for the fish and chips and it was good. Also has gelato and milkshake (can be made from the gelato) inside.

What a find on the high street, bostin place to eat, massive portions on the large fish and chips so we had the small size and still plenty for us . The staff are very friendly and always clearing up the tables to keep the place clean. I would definitely recommend this place for food. Carl

Fish and chips are very expensive in the modern world but these are beautifully cooked.

We ordered takeout but there are seats inside too. Quite possibly the best Haddock in batter I've eaten from a fish n chip shop. Buttery flakes of fish perfectly cooked and tasty crispy batter. Really great flavour, too, and not greasy. Large Chips were excellent, just enough for 2 to share. Luckily, we also ordered a portion of 'scraps', which we scattered over the chips. Delicious. Curry sauce was excellent, had a good flavour, and the mushy peas were thick and hot. Fish was cooked to order. We ate every last bit down to the last 'scrap'. Thoroughly recommend. And certainly, I will visit again if in Alnwick.

Great fish and chips, good service, busy even on a Monday evening, but not long to wait. We had take away so can't tell you about the atmosphere or the Gelato, which looked amazing by the way.

Many chippies give more chips than fish. The haddock I had filled the plate end to end with the chips filling the space. Sorry but it didn't survive long enough for a photo.
