Captain's Table in Swansea

I know core cost has gone up but should that make customer service go down ?? £23 for fish , chicken and chips. Wouldn't mind if the chips were edible instead of tasting like they had been dipped back in half soaked cold fat.. Mind you the can if coke was nice 👌

Slightly pricey fish & chips but was worth it as they were lovely. Fish was freshly cooked and batter was decent. Chips were also really nice.

Without a doubt the worst fish shop we have ever been to. It cost us £44.50 for… X2 fish and chips, X1 burger and chips, X1 rissole and chips, X4 cans of coke. We expected high quality but the chips were tiny, tiny kids portions (£4 each) and were nasty, greasy, fatty, sloppy and gross. They definitely take advantage with their prices and should be ashamed of themselves. Disgusting!!

One sausage with portion of chips and a cup of tea. £8.50!! Somewhat overpriced I suggest. I won't return.

Had quite a few coffees in the area during a break in Gower. This one set two records - most expensive and weakest . Disappointing.

Ordered large chips, pasty and steak kidney pie. It was the smallest greasy portion of large chips we have ever had. The pasty was hard and the inside looked nothing like meat the pie was just as bad. Not good at all . Total waste money. Take a picnic .

We visited late evening, just before closing time, after completing a long hot walk from a nearby bay. The service was great, and even though they were about to close, nothing was too much for them. They fried our order as we waited outside, called us in when it was ready, and served us with beautifully cooked, steaming hot fish and chips. There are plenty of tables to eat at outside, or if these are full, there are several benches nearby. We will definitely be eating here again on our next visit to Port Eynon.

Tàke away. The only one of the two chippies on the beachfront that was open. Chips were hard and dry, the thinner ones were so hard they could not be chewed. They appear to have cooked a large batch of chips that gradually dried out. Fish was tasteless but at least hot. The jumbo sausage was equally bland. Annoyingly the curry sauce appeared to be watered down, didn't have much flavour. Having placed my order and paid I felt that I was ordered to stand outside the premises while it was being cooked. At collection I had to point out part of my order was missing. The look of annoyance from the counter staff would have melted steel. Specifically drove across Gower to this chippie, so disappointed.

The next door chip shop was closed so unfortunately we had to use this disaster of a place. The ‘large’ cod at £7.10 was a pathetic excuse for a fish and when the customer in front of me questioned if he had been given a small fish by mistake he received abuse from the rude awful manager/owner. Looking at the reviews it looks like it used to be decent, but not any longer!

By far the worse fish and chip shop I have ever been too. Overly priced, tiny portion size and undercooked batter. There isn’t anything good about this fish shop, only went there because next door was closed what a huge mistake I can honestly say I would never return I would rather go hungry that eat here, do not waste your money.

Embarrassing portion size, as a a Swanaea resident I’m getting fed up of places like this taking the absolute p*ss out of people and milking them for their money. see attached photo which is my “large” chips that cost £3.00?!! Are you actually for real?! Look at the size of the vinegar sachet in comparison to the “large” fish!! Ordered two “large” chips (read two ‘toddler’ size portions for £6.00. A large sausage for £2.00, and a “large” cod for £7.10 (I appreciate the cost of cod has gone up), but yet again daylight robbery! I stood there waiting for my fish because I thought they hadn’t give it to me, but the lady said the sausage was in with one of the chips and it turned out what I thought was a sausage rolled up in paper was actually the cod! Usually this order would satisfy the two of us adults and our toddler, but this barely touched the sides and left me having to make additional food which defeated the object of having dish and chips as an evening meal. The sausage we had was probably the worst sausage I’ve ever had in a chip shop. Whilst not overly expensive compared to the standard chip shop, the quality was dreadful so I can see why they didn’t ramp the price up too much for this. Can only describe it like being dry and chewy like a dogs bone (not that I’ve chewed a dogs bone (yet), I may choose one next time I’m down Port Eynon though to save me having to return here!). Absolutely will not be returning, and to be honest, hope they go under as a result of their blatant money grabbing antics.

I very rarely have to give a poor review but this place has earned it. We called for supper after being out walking all day so we were starving. Take away only was being served & there was a queue resulting in a wait of around 30 minutes so we thought it must be good. We were very wrong. The fish was very greasy & the chips only just cooked enough and still soft so some were mushy. The beef burger was the most disgusting thing I have tasted for years, obviously the cheapest they could buy in, and placed on a plain bun even though it should’ve been with salad. I binned it after two, gristle-filled bites. The chicken burger wasn’t much better. We took the food to eat at our camper van just a five minute walk away and as we passed families sat around outside, eating their food, we heard many grumbles & witnessed food being thrown. As there are 3 take-always we were hoping it wasn’t ours that was the poor one. It was. There is a captive audience at Port Eynon with hundreds of visitors so they know they can get away with it.

It was just ok nothing special at all. Batter was very soggy+greasy ,portion size awful very smal for the price they charge. Won't be going back again.

The food quality was okay, nothing special, but I paid for a large cod and chips and what I got was a very average standard portion. My local chippie offers a senior special, for which I now qualify, and that's significantly more food for a fiver than was served here for over £8. Poor value for money so cannot recommend.

If you are hungry don't bother going here ! My wife and I spent over £20 on two large fish and chips and there was barely enough food to feed a small child ! The large fish was smaller than a jumbo battered sausage and the batter was soggy and uncooked , the large chips were ok but again the portion size was terrible , if you are paying premium prices for food it has to be of a certain standard.

Had a very delicious chicken burger, in a fluffy floury bun with cheese and mayo, very delicious and hot! Made by a young lad, I think his name was Connor

Fabulous chip shop with lovely staff. The chips were great and there’s a good menu for vegetarians. Highly recommended,we will definitely return.

Probably the worse fish n chips ive ever had about 20 chips and if that was a large cod then the small cod must be fish finger sized Couldnt eat them Couldnt complain as they were closing Wont be back there again

Being gluten free is not normally something to be happy about, except when it means you get fabulous hot, fresh, fish and chips! Lovely light batter on the fish. Well worth the wait - they're cooked to order, and the 120 mile round trip.

Can’t fault. 5 of us had fish and chips they were excellent. I had a small cod and it was loads for me. Great value massive portions. Best chippy tea I’ve had in years. Highly recommend

Just what you need after a stroll on the beach. Lovely clean well stocked fish bar. Good portion sizes. Friendly staff, went the extra mile - inviting us to sit whilst we waited and then brought the packed food out to us - thank you.

We called in for takeaway fish and chips on Sunday lunchtime. The choice was good, the food was cooked to order and was really tasty, not to greasy and piping hot. Well worth visiting.

Despite looking at the reviews before we tried this chip shop, we were very disappointed at the quality of the food. We had 2 x fish and chips and one chicken strips and chips. The 1 fish was really hot the other was just warm. On both the batter wasn't cooked enough. The chips were bland and bitty like they were the end of the day scrapings. The chicken strips were fine. We wished we had gone to the other chippy. Overall disappointed and we will visit the other shop next time.

We didn’t try the fish but the chips were good. Good selection of usual chip shop fare fish, pies, curry sauce etc. Also had veggie sausages and burger. Quick service and friendly staff.

The reason I'm awarding Captain's Table 5 stars is mainly because of the attitude of the staff as well as the quality of the food. I have always enjoyed having fish and chips there but have fairly recently become vegan. Because the owner is vegan there are now quite a few choices. She was delighted to talk me through the options and it is so lovely to feel accommodated and welcome as opposed to 'tolerated' when eating out. Mainly places are wising up and moving with the times but so many have a long way to go. I chose a burger and chips which was delicious and my husband enjoyed his usual choice of cod and chips with a cup of tea. It's also good to note that they serve soya milk and Vegan Magnums if you have room for dessert. It's great to encounter friendly service as it literally makes your day!! The only thing I'd love to see there in the future is 'tofish' which I know is served in Copperfish down on Mumbles pier and I would probably have opted for that if it had been on the menu. X

So here it is, the same meal at the same time. Totally different experiences! I thought my fish and chips were ok. Freshly cooked fish which was fine, slightly lacking in taste but not bad. Hubby had bony fish with soggy batter and lots of bits of chips. It wasn’t the worst and certainly not the best fish and chips we have ever eaten but Ok

Brought relatives from USA for lunch. It was amusing explaining to them what certain items on the menu were as they haven’t been to U.K. before! But they enjoyed their lunch. Thanks.

Friendly staff and owners, lovely food, great location. What more do you need for a tasty meal close to a great beach.

When you turn up hungry in the middle of a week day afternoon, your expectations are low. What a pleasant surprise. The Most Delicious fish 'n' chips that we've EVER had. Freshly cooked, yummers batter, perfect chips. And a most helpful young man served us - lived locally, helpful hints. Perfect.

We spent a few hours walking on the beach and then had a meal here. Good quality, nice and fresh at a reasonable price.

We were here for an afternoon to just enjoy the seashore and stopped in for a bite of lunch. Looking for fresh cod, we found it at The Captain's Table. We ordered the large and split it. Was perfect for a nice luck without being heavy. Sat at a table outside and they brought our order out. Nice place to sit and enjoy the sea.

At the end of a rainy day this was the place we chose for our seaside Fish and Chips, lovely piece of fish and friendly service. Couldn't ask for more

Whilst staying in Horton for a week we walked down to Port Eynon 3 times for a chippy tea! Once sat inside, once outside and once on the beach!

We were looking forward to having fish and chips all week and called in on our last night to indulge. To say we were disappointed was an understatement! Our chips were cold and our battered haddock was not cooked properly- the fish was ok but the batter was uncooked, tasting strongly of flour, mushy peas were solidified and lukewarm- all in all a disappointment as one of our party had fish & chips at The Ship (pub round the corner) which was very good.

I ordered large cod chips and peas, the guy in front ordered small cod chips.

I visited here after seeing mainly positive reviews on Tripadvisor.

See the picture, theirs are on the left, the ones on the right next door. It’s clean and friendly but I hope this was a one off and the Chips are usually better.

Well what a find! A beautiful setting. A glorious autumn day a d fish and chips by the sea. The fish and chips were lovely....a nice light batter on the fish. However, I found myself wondering, if this is a large cod, how small must the small cod be?!

Knowing the Gowers' reputation for fine food I looked on Trip Advisor to see which fish and chip shops had good ratings. I had heard about the Captain's Table so while we were on holiday for a week in a cottage not far from Port Eynon, we went there for a meal. It was a good decision and all four in our party agreed that the fish was certainly very fresh and perfectly fried in light batter.The chipped potatoes were crisp and tasty. We can understand why it was so busy. We thoroughly enjoyed our meals and were pleased with the value for money prices too. The service was excellent and a friendly welcome was extended to all the customers.

Four of us ate here sitting outside in the sun in late September. We were all really impressed with the quality of the fish and chips and mushy peas. I can be very critical of this particular dish as my father used to run a very good fish and chip shop in Ireland. The fish tasted so fresh, not overloaded with batter which had a lovely texture, and the chips were fantastic. We will definitely come back for more when we return to Port Eynon. The staff were also friendly and welcoming.

Arrived at the Captain's Table after closing time and yet they agreed to serve me. Very helpful and cheerful. The fish was really succulent and the chips were proper chip shop chips. Delicious! And thank you so much for the food after your closing time. Really appreciated it!!

Ate here with my family as we were staying at the excellent Nicholaston Farm campsite and fancied a chippy tea. Lovely chips and fish. Cooked fresh to order so a little bit of a wait. The proprietor seemed very friendly and welcoming. PLEASE NOTE - when we went back to our car, just after 8:30pm, the car park was shut!! Please make a note of this when parking your car.

Young chap runs this with his mum. They were just shutting on a wet and windy evening and it was a bit early for me to eat.....but he was so charming and friendly ...not at all pushy.. that I turned round and came back for a takeaway. Got back to apartment and discovered no tartare sauce to go with my fish...nightmare! No point in going back as it had shut....never mind it was lovely, freshly cooked and just what was needed. Walking dog later and a car pulled up beside me...was the chippie chap apologising for the omission! V impressive customer service. Thank you!

Bought 2 x Cheese Burgers, Large Cod and large Chips, The Cheese Burgers consisted of a bap a Burnt Burger, and a piece of processed cheese, the roll was not even butted, The cheese wasn't even melted, The Burgers where cremated, The large Chips was a joke probably one potato had been used and the Large Cod was one of the smallest Cod in the ocean .. If I had not had so far to travel back I would have returned them.. absolutely disgusting over priced food.

Spent a few days down the Gower and walked the dogs at Port Eynon, (separate entry for that) lol, stopped at the Captains Table for lunch and had to.. of course..have fish and chips, lovely large crispy batter cod and generous portion of piping hot chips, be aware during busy times, food is served in cardboard trays, good idea and they are not small either lol. well worth a visit.

We went in the captains table for fish and chips a few times over our holiday and they were always tasty ,the chips were always cooked the way I like them unlike the seafarer next door which were underdone for my taste also the rissoles which the captains table sold were delicious I loved these anyway to get back to the breakfast we had on our last day here it was very tasty and we opted for the large breakfast which was a very filling plateful and we had a nice mug of tea to finish all in all I would recommend the captains table for friendly service and good value for money tasty food

The measure of a chippy, are the chips. And these were delicious. There is also a good menu to choose from, with seating inside and out.

While staying in beautiful Port Eynon. You will inevitably eat at one of the two fish and chip places which are side by side. The Captains table has a seated area inside and offers some tables outside. We had a family take away which was ok but nothing to write home about.

Sadly a poor review for this establishment, our family took a stroll along the beach to cool off from the lovely weather we are having this summer and we decided to go traditional and have fish n chips by the sea.

Ate here, was a toss up between it and The Seafarer next door. Pleased with our choice, very good fish and chips and service.

We initially stopped at the first chippy on the way back from the coast path (practically next door) however they wouldn't let us in on account of us having a tiny Shitzhu dog with us!!

Visited for breakfast happy that they excepted dogs it was cold outside and the other cafe didn’t. We ordered to large breakfast (that weren’t large) to small breakfasts and 2 portions of toast, not much change from £30 and then they charged for sauce which I thought was a bit off. I felt they ripped campers off a bit due to the seasonal nature of the business

We ordered large cod and got small so beware we took them and got our money back. Why should we get ripped off just because we are on holiday. My son remarked it looked like a fish finger not a large cod.

Between us we had a Captains Breakfast plus lunchtime fish & chips, certainly no complaints - the staff were lovely. The food was great quality value in an awesome picturesque location, love Port Eynon. The decor is most inviting at this old smugglers bay. Topped off with an Americano to start my Sunday morning off.No complaints, have a great season to all The Captains Table, I'll be back soon.

Friendly enough staff. Fish wS large (£5)each plus chips plus peas. It was all very nice and the fish was pariculatly good being very fresh and white. Well worth a visit.

I arrived on foot as the takeaway was winding down at the end of the afternoon, so decided to eat before checking into the YHA. The lady who served me was so welcoming and friendly, and my chicken and chips was served hot and well prepared - the chips especially were just crisp and deliciously dry. I ate on the wall outside in the late afternoon sun. Thank you - this was good grub at a good price, just when a tired walker needed it. Recommended.

Popped in for large Cod and Reg Cod & Chips for the wife and I. Bones in both fish to my disappointment. There's skin on the Cod too - don't know if it's a South Wales thing though I've only ever had it on Haddock before. We were both not impressed however as we were hungry we ate the meals.No excuse for not filtering fish correctly.

As top rated chip shop in the Gower on Trip Advisor, we made our way here from Three Cliffs Bay, and it was well worth the visit!A full and varied classic menu to choose from, the fish was really well battered and cooked, the scampi was 'lush' according to our 9 year old, and the chips were cooked to perfection - just the right amount of crisp ones - especially tasty when covered in cheese with a topping of onion gravy.The restaurant looked very well presented inside, although we chose to sit on the seafront about 20 metres away - by a beach made for walking off a portion of fish and chips!Highly recommended!

Spent a week staying nearby in oxwich and came to the captains table for breakfast a few times. Great bacon baps and vey reasonably priced.

£18.60 for large fish,small chips and peas and a cup of tea. Fish and chips had been around for a while and looked in need of care and attention. The peas came in a soup bowl some time later, one bowl piping hot one bowl cold, obviously something went wrong with the microwave. Look on the bright side we asked for small chips and that's what we got the large fish would have been thrown back in in any self respecting fisher mans catch. Cup of tea was ok though. It's taken me longer to write this than the time I spent at the Captains Table.

Recently visited with my family. We all had fish and chips with mushy peas which were all cooked to order. The best fish I have tasted in a long time and possibly the largest portion as well.Well worth a visit and we will most certainly return.

I wonder at times is it the sea air that makes me hungry when I'm here or is it just the smell of the chips wafting over form here. Either way, I usually walk away sated.

A large selection of meals to chose from, meal deals available for the children in a animal box. Mario's award winning ice cream is to die for and they sell proper coffee locally sourced to. Great job will be back

We were walking on the beach and so decided on something to eat. Smelled the chips and chose this chippy as there are two.Had the scampi and chips with some curry sauce . A really good curry sauce but chips were a little dried. Good overall for a beach front chippy

Just had a good fish and chips meal. Helpful smiling staff. Food was freshly cooked and very tasty. Great setting.

The wait to get served was quite unnecessary , the queue was from just outside the door and the problem was only one person serving while another 2 staff were wandering around the quiet sitting area and fussing over nothing. The wait was over 15 minutes which to me could have been avoided if even 1 more staff member assisted (which they eventually did with 2 after I had been served). Having said that - the chips were excellent and the cheeseburger my sister had was good. Evertyone in our party of 3 adults and 2 kids thouroughly enjoyed the chips which were reasonably priced as well. I have given a very good rating as the food was good.

One of a couple of food placeson the Port Eynon seafront. The Captains Table has tables and plenty of rooms for families to eat. Fast, cheap fish and chips, good quality and friendly staff.

We arrived just before it closed about 9pm , but they freshly cooked chips and fish for us. Lovely staff and the best chips and fish we had on our holiday!

Have been to the Captains Table on many an occasion and have never had a bad meal this time it was Cod and Chips which was eventually finish off with an Ice Cream. Worth a visit for the belief when eating your fayre and enjoying the odd warm day our summers now bring.

We have eaten here a number of times this summer and it is really good. Breakfast is cooked to order and the fish and chips are really lovely. It is busy but I think that is testament to the good quality food and its location. The owner's have just taken this place on and I must admit everytime I go in its spotlessly clean and we always get a fabulous welcome. I highly recommend. Like most other Gower eateries - it can be busy but it is worth it. You can park quite close by too and eat outside (weather permitting)
