Captain's Galley Restaurant in Highland

Best food and dining experience in the region! We struggled to find a nice cosy place for dinner in Thurso — until we found Captain’s Galley Restaurant, about 6-mins out of town. Highly recommended.

Got there 20:00hrs on a Thursday, All closed...... Disappointed 😔

Absolutely bloody delicious. Whole Lobster, Cod Green curry, beef fillet all amazing and so well priced. Don't waste your time eating anywhere else in the area.

You must visit this restaurant, the food is exceptional, good sized portions, quality ingredients and excellent value. The staff are helpful and attentive, what more could you ask for. A must if you are in the area

Service was excellent and great food as well. Parking a bit tricky but worth it.

Food was good apart from creme brulee where the sugar didn't crack and the duck breast where the skin wasnt crisped by hot oil or pressed firmly. The Service was clumsy with the wrong things being brought to the table, service trying to take my dessert when I still had my shortbread and general confusion, more staff than people within the room so its confusing why it was so clumsy especially on a Friday night. Overall it didnt seem like it was worth the price at the end of the night despite the food being fresh and good.

The best restaurant we have been in Scotland so far. The service was amazing very friendly , thoughtful and smiles The food was amazing we had monkfish curry and I had mussels both were delightful. I would highly recommend

When you enter the room, that's the first aha moment. We had haggis sweets and scallop with chorizo ​​as starters. The main courses were the steak and haddock on leeks and puree. All 4 meals were cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic. The best meal we had in Scotland.

My new husband and I stumbled across this fantastic restaurant on our honeymoon and we are so pleased we called in to check the availability. We had the sea food platter each (too good to share) which was so fresh and tasty, even the chips were home cooked and seasoned to perfection. Our dog was welcome and served a bowl of water. Highly recommended.

Superb Monkfish Katsu curry....very well cooked and tasty. Good menu if a little pricey.

Very good restaurant but quite high price, £15 for 3 oysters! The scallops were tasty.

Thoroughly enjoyed our meal here tonight. It was a fabulous experience and well worth travelling to. We shared dishes between the three of us but I am going to recommend most the scallop starter and the fisherman's platter. The staff were brilliant - do try.

The best fish dish we have ever had! Lovely service and superb food. We both had scallops, then the Cheese Crust Hake and the Monkfish Katsu Curry. Two crème brûlées and a bottle of wine. We can highly recommend this lovely place.

Wow! What a meal. The best meal we’ve had in a long time. The Hake is incredible. The staff were really lovely. We had a lovely time and a can’t wait to go back.

It was my wife's birthday and we decided to do something special and Captain s Galley didn't disappoint. We had an entree each and then the seafood platter. Everything was cooked perfectly. We had the window seat in the old cool room and the view of the harbour was nice. The staff were also nice. It's not cheap, but it's worth it.

We went to this restaurant last week and didn't like it. Table attached to the kitchen with the door that opened continuously, cold service and one waitress in particular was very rude, food pretentious and excessively expensive for what they offer.

The food was fresh and well prepared. However, we felt the prices were exaggerated. Unfortunately the staff was not very friendly, forgot our starter but put it on the bill. Also the interior of the restaurant is stylish, it feels like there is too much humidity in the room.

We had a lovely meal here. A really nice restaurant in Whitehills. Open for Lunch and Dinner.

We ate good fish and seafood (salmon with tagliatelle and seafood platter). The quality is right. The service was a complete disappointment. We waited about an hour for the main course, the dessert order was forgotten and another half hour had passed before we were “allowed” to pay. The employees rush around the room mindlessly, but don't look left or right. Not possible at these prices.

Was looking for a fish and chip takeaway on a Sunday afternoon. This came up on the search didn't do a takeaway so we sat in and had a superb 3 course meal. Perfect. Service was great menu imaginative everything done to perfection.What a find highly recommended and dog friendly too which we only found out after we left leaving our dog in the campervan whilst we ate.

The food was 6/5, friendly service and pleasant ambience. The culinary experience was hard to beat.

Another Thurso gem. Sat on the wee terrace with the dog . Only has room for 1 table and 2 chairs over looking harbour. Other outside tables available. Monkfish Katsu curry very good and really nice bottle of Pinot Definitely be back. So many good eateries up here at the furthest north town in Scotland. Keep an eye on the pop up places offerings on the Thurso Facebook sites.

What a great plaice to visit😉, it was our first time but we will most definitely be going again. Lovely staff and very helpful. It was a small menu but carefully selected so when it arrived we were not disappointed👏🏼 All our meals were enjoyed and were very tasty and beautifully presented👍🏼 Starters, main course and puddings all disappeared😋 Sea you again🌊

Me and my colleagues take every opportunity to come here to eat. The staff are extremely friendly, the restaurant is beautiful, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming and the food is always spectacular. Definitely recommend.

So disappointed. Based our entire NC500 itinerary around this well-reviewed restaurant, only to visit on a Sunday (they're closed Mondays and Tuesdays) to be accidentally told by our waitress that on Sundays there's no catch and the chef just cobbles things together. Bill confirmed this with the beef dish labelled as "open main". Only 3 seafood starters and 4 seafood mains for a seafood restaurant (inc the lobster), most of which obviously not fresh ie smoked salmon, mackerel pate, panko'd haddock etc. I get that seafood is what's on but there basically wasn't anything on. Much enjoyed seeing all the HGVs leaving the harbour going to other seafood restaurants. Same story for wine; 3 reds and 5 whites on the menu. Looking back it seems it changed hands a few months ago and I can't say they're doing a good job, sorry.

The food and service were perfect. The restaurant is beautiful inside. I started with some chicken liver and moved on to the turbot. Both dishes were well presented and very tasty indeed. I have deducted a star because the Captain wasn't there and as it was his galley, I was very disappointed not to meet him. So, delicious food, lovely place BUT with an absentee Captain, very sadly!

After reading the rave reviews I was a bit disappointed with my meal and restaurant. The entree of lightly battered sliced eggplant layered was excellent but the fish and chips with a handful of rocket leaves was average. The piece of battered fish was dry inside. I was initially seated at a table outside the kitchen door with staff walking past constantly and asked to be moved which they did to another room which I appreciate. At least 4 wait staff served or asked about my meal and I was only there an hour from 615 which I thought odd when the restaurant was not full. I've had much better meals in 3 weeks holiday in Scotland.

First off, the staff were brilliant. After a long day of hold ups, traffic and idioticaly slow drivers, the staff squeezed us in with 5-10 minutes (if that), and we're very helpful and friendly. Absolutely stunning food! Some of the best fish I've had. Hake and Halibut are definitely what we're coming back for. The scallops starter was beautiful. A great relaxing atmosphere with the woodburner on and some great beer and wines to choose from too We're coming back soon and can't wait for it. It's been a very special night on our honeymoon and had been a highlight of our trip.

HIDDEN GEM! Delicious food, gorgeous setting so glad we found the best restaurant in Thurso. Stumbled upon this place after a rainy day on the north coast, log fire was burning, seafood was absolutely delicious, had the seafood platter which was just divine!! Service was great, drinks were yum - thank you Captains Galley!

An exceptional hidden gem, we couldn’t have found it if we looked! Incredible food, service, and atmosphere. Easily one of the best meals I’ve had in a while.

Our seafood tasters were quite simply breathtaking in quality; cooked simply, seasoned to perfection in a parsley cream sauce to die for.

Unbelievable meal at the Captains Galley. Couldn’t fault it, apart from the fact they had run out of oysters! Recommend the monkfish ‘wings’ and the seafood platter. Will be returning asap!

Table of three for lunch today. Presentation was perfection on a plate, every mouthful was beyond delicious and the interior design comfortable and creative. Highly recommend the Crab Starter, The Hake Main Course and the Ice Cream Crumble. Young man serving us was absolutely lovely; smart, welcoming and attentive. Only reason I won’t be going regularly is the six hour drive from Edinburgh. Well done Captains Galley.

Couldn’t fault our experience here. Fantastic food and service, lovely setting and nice atmosphere. This will be a must on our trips back to Caithness.

I feel sad to leave this review.. apparently the restaurant has recently changed hands - which may be why the food, service and atmosphere are ALL dreadful, and especially for the price.. I suppose the cost and quality of other options here; should be considered.. DO NOT waste your time and money coming here if you read the positive reviews as I did.. this is DEFINITELY NOT the best restaurant you will find on the NC500!!

Sadly due to a booking issue the kitchen was left understaffed and we waited 2 hours to get our food. It was disappointing that the staff did not take control of the situation. We were left sitting without drinks, menus or any communication until we asked. We didn't really feel looked after and if we had been told of the 2 hour wait we would have chosen to go elsewhere. Hope we will have a better experience next time we visit which I am sure we will.

This place was special. From the outside it seems like a real harbour restaurant with not much to offer. The moment you walk in you realise that this is not the case. The attention to detail in the main room is exceptional. We sat down for lunch and was helped by a very friendly waiter. The waiter helped us with the menu as well as drinks and told us more about the history of the interesting building. For Starters we shared the scallops, which were incredibly flavourful and well cooked. Perfect texture. The main course was a fish and chips and the crumbed hake with leeks and bacon. The food was fresh, tasty and well presented. It was also very well priced for the quality of service and the room. The chef came out to speak to us for a bit, which was a nice touch as we got to learn more about him, his past and ambitions behind the restaurant. We will definitely be back.

This was one of the most memorable dinners on our NC500 trip. If you like seafood, this is must. We got 2 seafood platters and a couple sides. The chef created such a personal experience for our group and the staff was extremely friendly. The main dining room is unique and has a ton of history, ask the staff about it! 10/10 experience.

Absolutely fabulous! I had the Seafood Sampler, suggested by the server and it was incredible. After dinner, I met the new owner, Jody. He's working hard to create a new legacy of excellence, and it's so evident. Way to go, Jody!

In the icehouse, spacious and clean and interesting ! The choices were great and the food quality was excellent ! Especially enjoyed the oysters as they were prepared exactly how they should be ! 牡蠣とLemon sole とsignature seafood plateを注文しました。めちゃくちゃ美味しいかった。でもテーブルはキッチンの入り口そばにあるのでとてもうるさかった油臭いが全身と服にもいっぱいつけました。

Sehr gute Küche: frische Zutaten werden hier von Köchen verarbeitet, die ihr Handwerk verstehen. Der Service ist bemüht, aber leider teilweise überhaupt nicht existent. Die Gäste waren zeitweise über 20 Minuten komplett sich selbst überlassen. Sehr Schade, aber das ist nicht professionell. ------------- Hallo Jody, vielen Dank für deine Antwort und ich möchte gern auf deine Frage antworten: Aus unserer Sicht, war an dem Abend nicht die Küche das Problem, sondern der Service. Tische von Gästen, die dein Lokal verlassen, wurden nicht abgeräumt, benutztes Geschirr am Gast wurde nicht abgeholt, Besteck wurde prinzipiell erst ausgehändigt, nachdem das Essen vor uns stand, die Servicemitarbeiter mussten mehrfach direkt angesprochen werden, wenn man einen Wunsch äußern wollte, die Rechnung mussten wir ebenfalls mehrfach anfragen und wurden anschließend über 15 Minuten komplett ignoriert. Beim Hinausgehen stellten wir dann fest, dass dein (wahrscheinlich) Oberkellner am Eingang saß und sich währenddessen angeregt mit seinen Kollegen unterhielt. Und wie bereits geschrieben, über 20 Minuten war kein Service für deine Gäste erreichbar. Noch ein kleiner Hinweis: Die Karte vor deinem Restaurant ist veraltet: die dort genannten Preise sind teilweise nicht identisch mit denen im Restaurant. Ich wünsche dir viel Erfolg für dein Restaurant und komme gern wieder: die Qualität deines Essens überzeugt auf jeden Fall. Herzliche Grüße Carsten

Scrabster might not be on your bucket list of places to visit, but if you are in the area, then Captains Gallery should be. Superb food in a fantastic location with lots of atmosphere. The seafood platter was amazing, as indeed were all courses. 100% recommend it and if you are on the NC500 make this one of your stops.

This is an absolute gem. We walked in for lunch today and met the owner and chef, who was very friendly and welcoming. Our server as well was great. The food was fantastic, we had the mussels, calamari and monkfish. Don't miss this place!

4 of us ate midweek so certain things were unavailable or sold out. However what was there was outstanding. Gorgeous fresh fish from the sea across the road. Great service, fair price. Highly recommended.

Very tasty food, but the waiting time was pretty long. We had a starter and a main each and left the Restaurant after 2.5h. If you are not in a rush, the food is worth it.
