Good food, excellent value, good choice of food, excellent service, friendly folk very popular with locals and visitors

I have been visiting captains cabin for over 30 years, in that time I’m sure it’s had many owners and changes. Once again I had a fantastic meal. Food freshly cooked and hot, the scampi is the best on the island, the homemade quiche and salad was amazing. No complaints with the food what so ever. It’s dog friendly with bowls of water for them. Great views of colwell bay. The staff are so friendly. I would recommend a visit here when in the west of the island.

Really lovely people offering consistently good service. Food great and honest. The views are to die for, unbelievable! Make sure you pop in here for a snack or drink.

Visited Colwell bay with family and friends was very excited to visit again after a long winter we had lunch in the cafe and the food was awful half of it coming out cold and very bland. The prices were extortionate for the quality of food! We then decided to pop to the beach shop for an ice cream which we do allot and noticed it had all changed including management. Sizes were smaller and prices had gone up! The staff wasn’t very helpful seemed like they didn’t want to talk at all. Such a shame as this has been a family favourite for years. Very disappointed.

Really fast, friendly service. It was packed and a coffee machine stopped working but this didn’t delay service or spirits! Highly recommend for cheap and cheerful breakfast by the sea!

Great location for this little seaside cafe. Staff very friendly. Dog friendly, which is always a bonus. We had a couple of coffees, sausage roll & a slice of coffee cake. Coffee was warm (not hot) Sausage roll soggy & not very tasty Coffee cake, bizarrely really cold & wrapped in cling film. Not that flavourful. Such a shame as had great expectations when we walked in.

Stopped in on our way home from The Needles. Weather was appalling which was disappointing but we stepped inside and were made to feel really welcome. Had a lovely family dinner. Service was fast but food all tasted great and was all freshly made. My children didn’t want to eat (just tired from a long day) but the staff were really friendly and made it fun for my little boy who ended up loving his sausage bap. Burger was fab and was a pleasant surprise to be able to order alcohol here too so I even got to have a glass of wine with dinner. Which was just a nice touch. Perfect end to a great day. Highly recommend!

Great views - very average breakfast! We arrived off an early ferry absolutely starving and I ordered the veggie breakfast which comprised of hash browns, fried eggs, beans, tomato and mushrooms. Bit unusual that no veggie sausage is offered but the strangest thing was the very very small mushrooms that were served up and no more than 4 on the plate! It was hardly worth serving them up! Why so mean with the mushrooms?? The eggs were over cooked, the beans were cold and the hash browns didn’t taste like any hash brown I’d ever tasted. Beautiful view but Colwell Bay is a tired, scruffy place and we were glad it was a flying visit and not where we were staying!

Fantastic value for money, service was prompt and the food excellent all made the better by the fantastic views.

We go here every time we visit the island. Just a lovely spot, with plenty of outside seating. Meals are always very good, well presented and lovely staff. Just a joy to visit. Well done to all the staff and Thankyou.

I was quite disappointed when I went, I asked for cold quiche and was told after that it was frozen so it had to be warm so I changed it to cold sausage roll when it came it was also warm and was told it also was frozen. We were sat outside and asked if there were any umbrellas and was told no, I would have expected umbrellas to be available in that heat. I have always enjoyed going here but think I will leave it for a while now

Captains Cabin serve really good food, very fast for a very reasonable price. They are just so impressively efficient in their service. I've never had a bad meal or a bad experience. Today I had quiche, salad and chips. It was delicious. I've had their quiche before and it's always lovely. 11/10 😁

Found this gem by chance. Staff very friendly, food is freshly prepared and good portion sizes. We had the ploughman's lunch and it was delicious. Good choices on menu at affordable prices. Lovely clean setting to relax and enjoy the scenery. We will definitely be back on our next visit to the island.

I ordered cod goujons expecting them to be small pieces of fish, there were 4 and they were the size of a jumbo fish finger, Great value for money but I only managed to eat 2.. enough chips for 2 aswell ( maybe I should chose child's portion another time 😀). There was a queue out the door at nine in the morning! But got served very quickly by the ever smiling ladies. My food came very quickly and was tasty. Excellent spot at any time of the day. Spotless clean . Main area has wheelchair access. Toilet and carpark within a few yards. Highly recommended.

Unnecessary attitude from a female staff member... Stayed at the Away Resort, The Bay, Colwell. Walked through an unlocked gate to the beach with my wife and beach accessories. On the way back the gate was locked. So I had to walk all the way around through a nasty footpath covered in nettles. Got my car to help my wife, reversed up a small section of grass only to be confronted by the said staff member telling me that no cars were allowed even though there are no signs displayed stating that... Very unwelcoming... Others had difficulty too including a woman and small child. The staff are more concerned about a crap piece of land than helping in the hot weather... Wish I hadn't given them our custom...

Friendly staff. Can’t do enough for you. Amazing food. Especially full English (every morning for me). Well, I was on holiday 😋. Location right on the sea front. Ideal if you just want to chill with a coffee and piece of cake( I know, more food). Can get busy , which tells you all you need to know.

The cover photo on trip adviser is not the real place. Food was mediocre to say the least. My son was convinced his chicken nuggets was fish and my husbands cheese and tomato sandwich had about ten tomatoes on. This place really is quite something.......

With time to fill on a day visit to Isle of Wight we popped in here for lunch. I wanted crab sandwiches which they had and the most delicious cake. What made the difference to us was the kind and attentive service of the ladies in the cafe. Pleasant service and good food is so hard to find these days, and the view of the beach from our table was a bonus too.

So, after the worst staff ever at the hut, we walked past this place. So glad we stopped. The views are amazing, staff just lovely!! Food is good, it’s not a la cart but it’s fine.

This cafe offers all you would expect from a seaside cafe with the advantage of also being licensed. Delicious cakes, well cooked 'comfort food' meals and a wide range of refreshments -- with traditional cooked breakfasts to die for! The friendly staff serve with smile and hygiene standards are high. All in all, one of my favourite seaside watering holes.

This is our local breakfast place and its truly great for breakfast overlooking the solent.The menu has all the old favourites but my favourite is the fact they do a full English or if you can't manage that they do a half which is enough for me.The view is just great and the staff very friendly.

We have been visiting the Captains Cabin for 4 years now during our holidays and we have always enjoyed fantastic food and a friendly welcome. Vinny cooks the most amazing full English breakfast thats literally keeps us going all day! Cooked fresh to order and served piping hot, bacon, egg, mushroom, hash brown, tomatoe baked beans and the added option of fried bread. Best fried bread we have tasted in years. Selina and all the other waitresses are so friendly and helpful, we look forward to every visit. Very quick service and the views over the bay cannot be beaten. Would highly recommend.

We wandered down to captains as we were early for check in at Colwell bay. Lunch didn’t disappoint- fresh crab sandwich with chips. Plenty of outdoor tables to watch the paddle boarders and boats bobbing about. Really lovely

What better than to go for proper breakfast when it is a rainy morning. And what a fabulous breakfast we had here. Here with my elderly parents who enjoyed it too. Chip shop. Usual British mediocre sad food but even chips were rubbish . Don’t ‘do’ ice with drinks. Don’t ‘do’ salad dressing on the sad iceberg excuse for a salad.

Husband treated me to a crab sandwich from the Captains cabin while we spent the day on the beach. Have to say it was one of the best I have had, loads of filling and it tasted amazing. Will definitely try to call here again.

Modern, clean, variety of hot and cold drinks. Good views. 4 stars given because no baby changing facility! Was told the disabled toilet was big if I wanted to change him in there. Thanks but no way am I laying him on the floor. Plus if it's big enough - then where is the pull down changing table?!

We weren't looking for anywhere in particular when we found this place. It was raining so needed somewhere to shelter. I'm so glad we went in. I had a crab sandwich which was very tasty, and with so much salad it was like a meal rather than a snack. I thoroughly recommend a visit if you are in the area.

We had the scampi, cod with chips and a crab meat sandwich. All of the seafood was so fresh, juicy and oozing with flavour. The little one stuck to his usual chicken nuggets which I’m afraid tasted like the reconstituted crap you’d find in most local chippys. Stick to the seafood. It’s worth it.

This really is a gem of a place. One of the best views around and just a few feet from the beach. Recently modernised and extended there is an attractive modern deck outside with glass panels to provide shelter from any wind. There is also a shaded area giving outside seating under the overhang of the roof, plus a few tables inside.

Visited twice for breakfast across a few days. Its down a small road and sits right on the beach. Parking is across the road at a small charge and there is plenty of seating out on the deck overlooking the sea or inside.

Lovely visit to the Captains cabin on a sunny day. Staff were all really friendly and accommodating, a young girl in glasses came out to give my dog a treat which was lovely. The manager (Selena) came out and had a nice chat with us. Only stayed for some cheesy chips but the portion was generous for the price and was definitely needed! Will be back

Went here for lunch with my family, meals were good except one that we were not happy with, requested to get a refund on the one meal, which resulted with a lady coming to our table who was in fact the owner, who ended up being very offensive and rude to us telling us to ‘sod of’ we then proceeded to wait for our refund after 10 minutes we went to find her to get the refund for this meal and she was very rude to us and finally gave us the refund but proceeded to tell us to sod of and don’t come back. Real shame to the company as the rest of the staff were very friendly and polite however the owner was neither of these and very very rude.

Colwell Beach has come a long way in the last couple of years - and The Captain';s Cabin is one of the reasons. Friendly service, good cheap food, and a great view over the beach and The Solent complete a visit well worthwhile.

I have never been at a caffe by the sea without any seafood available....this was quite shocking to us. They had an awesome crab salad last summer (probably the only good thing on their menu), and now? Just feeling disappointed :(

We stopped off for a quick lunch on a dog walk along the beach and enjoyed a very good ham salad and a ham and tomato baguette with tea. The location is beautiful with stunning views over the Solent, the food simple but of good quality (the ham was especially flavourful, not supermarket bland). We would definitely recommend.

Captains Cabin offers great choices of meals with good service and at reasonable prices for families.

Well, nice spot. Friendly except when really busy. Lovely cakes, lovely ice cream. Food hit and miss. This time 3 breakfasts (different combos) on a really quiet morning all resulted in hard overcooked fried egg even though freshly cooked (like those on a servery in a canteen). Great shame. Sometimes the bacon or sausage rolls are great - other times they are under or over cooked. Too inconsistent for us. We have decided not to eat here again except cake/coffee/ice cream. OK value but could be better.

I took my parents and my son to Captain’s Cabin for breakfast. The selection of different breakfasts was good, and they have a good vegetarian breakfast too. The set breakfast did not suit myself or my Mum, and the staff were very quick to offer substitutes, which I thought was great service. Lovely tea, and beautiful views to go with a great breakfast. We will be visiting again soon.

Reasonable coffee, good service and a brilliant view over the Solent. One of our favourite spots - shame it closes for the winter months.
